Rover SD1 V8-S Triton Green, Barn Find, First Start

- Well something happened, i ended up with another Rover SD1. This is an extremely rare V8-S in Triton Green with MANUAL gearbox. My dream SD1.
Its been sat behind (not in) a barn, so im calling it a barn find. It is pretty ripe, plenty of moss and rust etc etc and it hasnt run for a long time. So first job, check out what i actually have, and then try and bring it back to life.
Dont expect a rapid project, i nearly didnt bother uploading this. There are plenty more cars ahead of it in my list of projects, so be patient.
This is definitely a proper UA-cam channel, your presentation and knowledge is why we all watch and enjoy your videos
Thanks Simon
totally agree
Genuine Triton green V8-s........Phwoarrr!! 👍👍
Sunday night bliss, my god a genuine v8s think you could call her envy based on reg, cause I envy you the car and the skills to fix it. Thank goodness ‘you’ found it.
Good to see a rare V8-S being saved from the scrap heap. I look forward to seeing further videos on this
I bought one of these brand new from a Rover dealer and it looked more or less the same condition in the showroom. Started rotting before they left the factory those crappy old British cars
I had a 1980 3500 V8S, 5-speed, platinum color when I was living in Germany. Bought it from the local Rover dealer in 1981 as it was the owners personal car. It ran beautifully but the manual trans required a rebuild in the first year I owned it and the rear hatch ribbon wiring started smoking while I was driving it. Nothing like looking in the rear view mirror and seeing all that smoke. Still loved the car though but had to sell it when I left Germany. Once back in the US in 1985 I found another, 3500 V8 American Spec, and had my cousin in the UK send me the euro headlights and front and rear spoilers. This car was fuel injected and I found it sitting in the back of a car lot with running problems. They didn't want to sell it to me because of that but I insisted (guess I'll never learn). I ripped all the fuel injection off it and installed a John Wolfe Racing aluminum intake manifold, and Holley 600cfm carb and changed the fuel pump to less pressure. Also installed a Buick water pump w/provision for a engine fan which helped it stay cool. This one was an automatic transmission which I had to have rebuilt. Eventually got tired of throwing money at it and traded it for a Mercedes 450SEL. ;-) Still think it's a great looking car though.
I worked for Rover when these were new drove plenty of them and the V8S was a particularly nice model.Gen 1 cars were were real rot boxes and we had to repaint a few cars before they went out to customers due to poor paint,Happy days and will watch with interest.
This was exactly how I found my current SD1 been sat for 20 years, I went through exactly the same routine and got the car running
“Pray to the Rover Gods” was definitely the point!
Wow will be another incredible built James
James how could you get me all excited late on a Sunday night, this is sheer unadulterated CAR PORN 😂, won’t sleep a wink. Stunned, but full of anticipation for the years of restoration ahead 😁 what a find ❤️👍🏻.
Yeah imagine how excited i was when i got it! The Mrs was less impressed
@@nitrosilvia Well I’m very impressed James 😉
My first car on the road at 18 was a Rover SD1 V8 manual in Chocolate brown. I owned a little car valeting company and i bought it off the guy that worked next door in a body shop. I cannot tell you how much fun and 'Loving' went on in that car, especially when all my mates drove 1000cc Minis and the like.
Lovely chatty presentation which draws you in. My father had a 2600 SDi in Casise Red (I think that is the correct name for the burgundy red colour) which was my favourite car that he owned when we were kids. I loved driving that car, it was so smooth and easy to drive. He also owned a P6 which was a complete rust bucket and the smell of the leather seats made me feel sick. I will follow this rebuild with interest. Word of the day: Tripod.
Well that's me hooked again for the next 4yrs or so , came across your channel right at the begining of you starting to work on the diesel on the car park were you work and have been hooked ever since .
Yippee, very nice james, great find, beauty.
That was brave taking it to France in 2008! What a splendid project! Can’t wait
thought for a momment that Dotty had come back for a visit, but no. This one going to keep you busy, can;t wait.
Even the leaves look original
Mine was mustard yellow - got it off a mate for £50.00! Arches were rotten. Patched it up with P38 & Plastic Padding - then we painted it matt black with a few red accents. BIG Jag tires on the back and trundled around feeling like Mad Max. Used more oil than fuel, stunk of filler hardener and ATF. Got stopped by the police regularly. I was 19 so it was 1989.
Commuted into London with the back seats down and tools in the back like a pickup truck. Left an oil slick on the pavement outside Tower Records in Piccadilly.
Ran a huge Sharp tape deck off the cig' lighter that destroyed the alternator one night on the M4 in wales en route home from Ireland towing a trailer.
Happy daze!
Mad Max indeed! I was i was born earlier :(
I had to wipe away a little tear when that V8 burst into life 😀🇬🇧
Love the look of the SD1, that Triton Green is stunning. I appreciate it is rotten in places, but I think a couple more years and it would of been beyond saving. Will be great to see it on the road!
Knowing the old SD1 or cheese wedge as some people called them, the only surprise is that it hasn't rotted away completely 🤣
A new project canny wait.....Looking forward to it.
This is the best kinda UA-cam channel, rained off cold driveway nipping in and out when you should be doing other things. Taking risks to hear things run is how every driveway restoration really happens in the real world. I spent hours lying on damp driveways till I got my unit now I just spend hours lying in a cold damp unit 🙃
You've got to love a v8 sd1, I was working as a mechanic at a rover dealership in 1988/9 and I bought a vitesse that had been part exchanged for the rover sterling. I ran it for a few months then moved it on, I wish I still had it, it was a lovely car to drive being a manual.
Name it “The Hulk”
Wow! My all-time favourite model, spec and colour of SD1 - hope you are able to save her!
nice work, loved these back in the day
I remember these being launched and the one in my local BL dealer. What a machine! Triton was the best colour by miles.
Thats a very rare colour for an SD1,I can't recall seeing another,I stand firmly in the camp of ' Oily Rag ' restorations a car loses its originality when you completely respray it ,other than the bonnet the body looks like it could easily be brought back with a machine cut/polish and sealed, any other areas I'd just do localised repairs, the interior though faded would clean up easily. This has the makings of a good daily driver car , I,d rather have a classic that you don't have to worry about leaving in supermarket car parks to get dinged or scratched .
As a kid I thought these were the utter dogs roundies! I was born in 71 and lived near the Longbridge plant in Birmingham. Our neighbour had a Princess and I thought he was so rich! Then he got one of these and it blew me away. The interior seemed so cool and futuristic compared to my dads Allegro. Lovely car and great video.
Cheers Retro Shed, my grandparents had one when I was a nipper and I thought they were super cool then!
It still breaks my heart when I remember my Dads 1980 Rover SD1 V8, this car was immaculate, not a rust spot anywhere, it developed the ignition distributor circuit board problem and he got ripped off by a couple of mail order scrap yards who sold him faulty parts, his mate told him he would get the best price in a local auction and he ended up selling it for £250 and it had less than 60k on the clock.
Thank you for the intro to what I think is one of the best cars ever, the Rover v8. We've had 2 v8s and one 2600s straight 6. I say we but they were my Dad's. Loved 'em! Looking forward to the series.
Well done .. a very rare Rover SD1 V8S back up and running. Looking forward to the finished car
The car is obviously now in safe hands. Paint colour is awesome 👌
always love when i find a new channel like this
The V8-S was the first SD1 I loved as a kid, especially the Triton green. I remember that poster ad it looked so cool👍 I still think that the original mk1 SD1 shape pre rounded bumper, is the best shaped exective saloon ever designed.
I’m impressed that you did most of that one handed well done
Love the colour I had its baby sister back in the early 90's a 2300 in silver that had suffered with the dreaded rust too as did many makes. Will keep my eyes open for the restoration ♥️
Loving that car. Please save it.
I remember them! Them big Rovers back in the early 80s when I was about 10 or 11 years old my neighbour five doors down came home from work one day in a beautiful white one Ken and his wifeAudrey had no children but are used to always go down to see them when I seen the car I ran as fast as I could to see Ken’s new Rover! First thing I noticed was the 3500 v8! Black interior leather seats I could’ve been wrong before I’m nearly sure. I could be wrong this is over in Ireland 🇮🇪 round 84-85! I was the only child in the housing estate that got a spin in kens Rover!I will never forget it fabulous car❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊
Never seen the sd1 in green before. I have had about 5 SD1s before, all v8 Vitesse. The last one I had was a 1984 auto, and I converted it to a manual. Brilliant car, very prone to breaking down, and gave up when rust started getting too bad. Great video and update. Please save as many sd1s as possible!
My friend's parents bought a new VP one in that colour. I can even remember the reg no...how sad is that?
About 5?!
Still remember my late dad telling me about this car before the launch, as he worked at Rover in Solihull, and got to spend time with the prelaunch cars. Despite Rover at the time being in decline, there was a certain pride/ excitement about the SD1. Good luck with the restoration.
It really was cutting edge, even the whole overall silhouette was new. And it set the trend for 5 door hatches like we have today. This was the first.
You could call it Lemmy, looking forward to this one being done. 👍
Just found your channel thanks to this video, glad i did! That's a sub from me. Love the old SD1's, I remember back in the 80's my mates dad had a V8 SD1, we kindly fitted it with a straight through exhaust for him, just a cheery bomb on each pipe. The sound it made was heavenly, but not sure the neighbours agreed. You could hear the burble of him coming down the road from half a mile away. Sadly never owned one myself, but did own an 827SI a few years later. Nice to see this SD1 getting some love and care.
Fantastic. Something to look forward to watching. I also highly rate the non-slick way these are filmed as it bets us closer to how you’re seeing it as it happens.
That's a great project and a stunning colour.
Great it's a manual.
Looking forward to this one.
I know, couldn't believe it was manual too
Well that was fantastic, seeing that run and idle after 9 years was awesome, great engines great cars
Fabulous! Can't wait to follow progress on this rusty yet still adorably beautiful SD1. Fantastic colour too.
Brilliant vid, I really watch far too many of these types of channels and there aren't many that I'd happily watch in one sitting for nearly an hour, while avoiding work, but yours is one - subscribed! Can't wait to watch more - thanks for posting.
I really enjoy watching you save these beautiful cars. You are an expert at it. Great colour. I can imagine the sound of that engine already once all sorted. I'll be patient and wait!
Cheers Stevie, i want it semi running so there should be another vid on this car in not too distance future
Just stumbled across this for the first time. Thoroughly enjoyed it as I used to own a manual V8-S in Triton green back in 1985 (XRV 222V). It was my first 'sensible family car' and I was 21 when I bought it. I sold it to my dad to replace his 2600S and he loved it. Mine had air con and cruise control which both worked. I fitted a stronger MGB V8 oil pressure relief valve spring, uprated cam (piper 270), cam gears and needles from Rimmer Brothers giving it about 180hp. Dad chopped it in for part exchange in '92 and I never saw it again. Maybe invest in a camera tripod so you can film and use both hands while you work?
Congratulations on your purchase James hope this s is a keeper when you’ve restored it
i believe those matts are rare, my sd1 vitesse came with them too which are original from 1984
James this is what I love about your channel, your passion for the SD1’s and your knowledge on them is truly amazing you aren’t phased by anything on these cars you just get on with it, The sound of a rover sd1 cranking into life takes me back to my younger years in the 80’s helping my dad with his Rovers, This is truly a special SD1 can’t wait to see more of this car on your channel thanks again for sharing your SD1 projects 👍
My friend's dad had a V8S like this in Triton Green. Got it new in 1979. It might have been this one. Except that I think it had a pale brown leather interior - I remember the leather smell when he opened the door and I slid across the sun warmed bench seat in the back. I remember how beautiful the green metallic flake paint was and how big the car seemed.
Yeah leather was an option. Ive not actually seen one. All the ones ive seen had cloth, but the leather ones are out there
Nice to hear it running 😁
You did well to grab it. almost all gone. ive a 86 twin plenum. Rotten as a pear but have a parts car complete.
The TP can only go up in value. I have a couple in storage
Can't wait to see work on this beauty begin James 👌
Definitely worth restoring👍👍
Don't worry about a proper UA-cam channel, your doing a proper job and what you are doing is very watchable 😊 very enjoyable and keep up the good work and best of luck with your totally original V8-S.......
Thanks Governor
Ha, ha, this brings back memories!!..I owned one of these years ago and blew a head gasket chasing a Ferrari Dino on the A14 from Stowmarket to Bury St. Edmunds. Looking in the rear view mirror I had steam pouring out of the exhaust and the speed just dropped and it finished up running like a bucket of sh*t. After limping home, I had to pull the heads off, get them skimmed with new gaskets and she was back on the road within a week. I loved that car at the time.
This is going to be fun! You just can't resist James, can you?
I am not even a big Rover enthusiast but just love watching your resto videos. Always an interesting watch.
Best of luck with this one.😄
Thank Doktor
I too had one as a company car for a while in ‘79. It blew its exhaust baffle box on the M6 near Manchester. Sounded rather awesome.
Thanks for sharing.
The plastic bag in the car is biodegradable, sadly most plastic bags don’t crumble. :(
Really looking forward to more films on this! Engine out job? Lots of therapeutic welding videos I hope!😀
I used to have that actual model in that colour V8-S but with body kit, wide arches and Revolution wheels, 225 50 tyres all round. Cosworth spoiler on the rear. Loved it, wish I still had it
I am RIDICULOUSLY excited!!! This has surely got to be a keeper when it’s done James? Can I visit it? I have biscuits… 😂 stunning!!!
Even in this state, what a beautiful car!
Oh wow love the colour .. would love to see this back on the road
Great video loved it, in the late 80s early 90s had 3.0 capris last one totally rebuilt it was beautiful, next thing was to put a rover v8 in, but someone followed me home one day and made me a offer my wife couldn't refuse in my 60s I miss her, my car not wife i mean, any way back to you can't wait for next video
Jesus James u love a challenge wow great to see u keeping them on the road good luck put the kettle on
Used to walk past a V8-S everyday in the mid 80's always thought it was one of the coolest cars you could ever find 😍
Great video. What a lovely colour.
I had a toy model of this car when I was a kid freakin loved it
I did too! It was blue and had a slider sunroof!
I've been following the diesel from the start. Also Dotty from start to finish. Then I started thinking he's done now. Then you produce another poor old SD1. Great more rover goodness. You have an addiction lol.
Mate thats not the half of it. I think i have 9 sd1's now :(
I had one of these!!! I put a replacement V8 in it. The V8-S was awesome . Mine was in Triton Green too
Most of that rust on these cars like most others is easily avoidable but people just drive their cars and wash them etc but don't bother with getting underneath and scraping off the old underseal and rustproofing the car and painting over that even with Hammerite or similar to protect the car and then re-undersealing the car and then waxing all of the inside of the sills and cavities etc. That is what I used to do with my cars and I never had problems with rust including my 1978 Marina 1.8 HL/TC and 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe - never owned an SD1 even though I really like these cars but when I moved here in 1998 there was a guy along at the end of my street who drove a silver D Reg SD1 Vitesse as his every day car right up till about 4 years ago when he had to give up driving because of health issues and I could see that car start to go with rust round the wheel arches and especially at the front of the back arches and sills and I always thought the same as I said above that that was all avoidable and if it had been my car that would not have happened. The good thing is the car has gone to one of his relatives who owns a garage who is restoring it I have been told so hopefully another one that will be back on the road again soon.
Really though you shouldnt have to go to those crazy lengths if they are built properly
@@jonathaneastwood2927 What a dumb comment - EVERY car back then rusted including BMW, Mercedes and even Rolls Royce. It is only now that they have had the technology and rustproofing materials that last that stops cars etc from rusting although they eventually still will if not looked after re rust coming through from the wheel arches and underneath. It was only the early SD1s that had problems with build quality and I never had any problems with the build quality of my Marina and Allegro. Allegros were actually one of the first mass produced cars to be rustproofed with wax etc and were well protected against rust by 70's standards but the rustproofing had to be kept up after the warranty ran out and most people never bothered doing that and the same went for every other car as well by all manufacturers. Cars are being scrapped these days with bodies that are in excellent shape because of the much better rustproofing. That SD1 in my street still managed to survive all that time no problem even though it was used every single day and was parked in the street all that time and there is a Gold 78 Reg Mk2 1500 Allegro parked in one of the streets off mine that is mint so cars from back then can last this long if they are looked after.
@@williamwoods8022 fair enough points but dont be calling me dumb William.
Never seen an SD1 in that colour before, it's superb. My mate had an absolutely mint terracotta manual SD1, but it wasn't a V8 and was a more poverty spec one. It was absolutely immaculate though.
Awesome, looking forward to a few years of welding uploads 😆
Thought for a minute it was the vanden plas off project Nigel 🤣
I love the bayleaf green interior in that project nigel car. Hope someone saves it
@@nitrosilvia think it's sat waiting for you to finish the S. Have you don't one with a body kit?
You should call it the Hulk because it's a big green beast.
Had a couple manual v8’s one was a v8-s too, but was so rotten around screens rear arches it had to get scrapped. Way back in 1990’s. So funny seeing all the things wrong with yours that were wrong with mine I remember vacuuming the boot and all the carpet was inside the vacuum! It was a seriously quick car in straight lines, but around corners is was poor, I should have beefed it up more, but I found a seven series bmw, and couldn’t believe how good it handled compared. Also remember it used to stall every few miles, which turned out to be a dodgy dizzy. Handy little light on the bonnet to help you in the dark, and pulling out my gear position blank on the dash for the later coin holder. Back in the day it was hard to find good steel bumpers without dents, and also my camshaft was so worn on the other one, it could tick over at a pathetically slow tick over. When I put a new one in, and chain gears it was like a different car. Also, Not too much Black Death in your engine, your lucky!
one look a the thumb nail got me very fizzy. beautiful. i miss my rovers especially my 620. which incidentally died out side the rover entrance in longbridge on 2006 christmas eve . sad times.
I think the best colour for me with the gold wheels, smart combination, nearly brought one year's ago in the same colour scheme. Lovely car's especially the V8.
OMG! Mine was called Kermit: FOJ687V. Had the Borg Warner 65 3 speed auto box with a 25mph per 1000 rpm top gear ratio. Went to the French Alps in her in 1988 and left the full exhaust system on the deck of the ferry when coming back! Sounded nice up the M1! good times!
Awesome. Gonna be a lot of work. My favourite Rovers. I had an 800 fastback.
I had SEVEN of these over the years ending up with the Vitesse! AWESOME CARS! The Green one with gold wheels were ULTRA RARE. I had one of the Persian Blue ones! One was an ex cop tuned up V8 went like a rocket. Im an aircraft engineer by trade but I can rebuild these V8 engines wth my eyes shut. Sadly I had to scrap one and I kept the engine which I sold to a guy making a Cobra replica! That was bored out to 4 litres! The sills are pretty easy to get hold of, I used to borrow an indusrial spot welder from work to tack it then I waxoiled them inside before seam welding them, they NEVER rot again! Thats in pretty good nick steel wise you are lucky. It wasnt until some months after I had bought one a mate backed into it in the staff car park and a HUGE lump of 'wing and arch' dropped into the road. Basically it turned out to be loads of 'cereal boxes' and the 'ECONOMY FAMILY ' sized tub of plastic padding!! it LOOKED pukka but it turned out most of the car was FILLER AND CARDBOARD! So many months of rebuilding her with new wings floor pans etc. But I got there. Truly eat drink and breath SD1's! Good Luck! The engine design was nicked from BUICK in America - they are BOMBPROOF as long as you change their oil and service them. It is the SOUND of these engines that made me fall in love with them. I bought one I had to drive back from Wales - taxed and MOT'd but the guy warned me 'if you see cops back off the throttle as it only has a STRAIGHT THRU scaffold pipe exhaust I had to make as I was skint!" 😂😂. BUT.....it sounded like a Sherman tank on speed! Great fun along the M4 when I got to a deserted bit I gave it the beans and it ROARED! bloody marvellous. Had to put a proper system on though for next years MOT 🙁
I've always loved how the Rover SD1 looked.
Great video. Looking forward to the next one. Love an SD1 and especially a V8s. Don't change your style, I'm in a similar position with an old Saab and I'm learning from your experience and knowledge
I bed the saab is harder to get panels for. SD1 a fair bit is still available so im lucky
@@nitrosilvia luckily a few repair panels are available, but only for a few areas. Otherwise, I'm fabricating/cutting bits out of donor cars. That's next.
I've just learned a lot about Bosch K jetronic fuel injection, as like you, I needed the car to move under its own power to get onto my garage. It's all part of the fun
I had 2 v8s and 2 x 2.6s back in the day, loved those days, so much more simple days. I remember taking one of the 2600 top end apart and somehow got the tappet shims mixed up, didn't own a micrometer and non of my mates had one, took days to sort it in the end.
The shims on a 2.6 scare me! Glad most of mine have been v8's! They make sense to me
You're back. Great. Another SD1 and lots of fun. Cheers matey.
I remember these from when they were new, and IIRC that colour was used in the Rover advertisements. My dream car at one point...... never did get to buy one, settled for a used 820 some years later (which wasn't all bad, but definitely wasn't the best car I've ever owned)
Damn i really like that green, couldnt have been many made in that colour
i did lots of work on these cars back in the 90s, and i loved them.
This was the first car I got run over by. Long time ago. Beautiful motor.
The first? How many times have you been run over! Go on, there must be a story here... And were you ok?
Needs a lot of work but worth it. Hydraulic camshafts spin the tappets which pick up the oil. I like cleaning plugs with a gas torch plus it warms them up.
Good work James.
A proper UA-cam channel would have had 50mins of Timelapse so long live your GoPro in the mouth channel. Nice car. Can’t see you being able to leave that alone for more than about an hour. Predict many adhoc uploads hopefully
I'm 55now back in the day I owned 3sdi s a 2.3,and2,3.5 . A genuin underestamated car . I'm sure you will do this car justice. Just subscribed👍
Had one of these at the beginning of the 80s, lovely to drive and converted me to automatics, it rusted like mad but the v8 was unstoppable I managed to bend a piston rod once and fixed it myself at the side of the road outside my house without even taking the engine out, currently have a landrover stage 1v8 with the same engine in it,
It's 40 years old, and the battery is barely getting the starter solenoid to click in, but it still bursts into life after a couple of seconds
Fantastic! I miss the SD1. I've owned six over the years. Last being a 3500SE and before that a 3500S, this was a black LHD model "X" reg but an earlier model and import. It also had air con too.
Nice. Love a black sd1. I think that colour really suits them. My mate has a black sd1 diesel
@@nitrosilvia . I believe the diesels are quite rare? I also had a dreadful 2000cc one. Appallingly bad.
Brilliant as always James. I love the revolving door of basketcase projects. Good to see your subscriber number creeping up steadily!
