    My Dad had 2 of these back in the day, both 3500 V8, one was gold the other light blue with gold BBS style spoked wheels.
    We lived in Milton Keynes was a lot of fun going sideways through the roundabouts 🤣🤣
    I live in Lincolnshire now and there a light blue one sat on someones driveway just round the corner.
    I'm now tempted to knock and ask if they want to sell it!

    The SD1 is one of my favourite British cars. When I think of the SD1, I inavaribly picture in my mind a late 1970s 3500 in Pendelican White or a Vitesse in Moonraker Blue :)

    Glad I found your channel I do absolutely love an SD1 I hope some day I get the chance to own one currently have a 75. In my experience with Rover V8 they are quite rubust we had 4.6 p38 in family for 20 years and its got over 200k miles it did need headgaskets once but that due to a dead fan viscus coupling. Also I do agree that EFi V8s are vastly superior albeit I may not have sampled the best carbed ones one being in a disco 1 and the other a defender but in terms of smoothness and responsiveness I found the EFi ones to be lesgues ahead .

    Super cool video, I'm just getting back into these sd1's after loving growing up with my dad's 3500se in moonraker blue, I always wanted it but he sold it after the torque converter lost oil to a guy who had just restored his sd1 for it only to be written off on its way home from a mot! Not sure if he rebuilt his car or my dad's.
    Anyways I live in London and seeing as owning something 40 years old is good I want to get a sd1 next year as my next daily, something safe and drivable but needs tidying up so I can love it and show it off at shows. Its name will be big joff after my dads nick name, i lost him 6 years ago, he was only 59 and cars were our bonding so big joff will be to remember him, I do eventually want to build a ls powered sd1 restomod car with modern ecu and brakes etc as a real nice fast cruiser.
    Il be waiting for more content, thank you

    So glad I’ve found your channel looking forward to seeing more of your Rover projects especially the SD1’s, I grew up with my Dad driving P6’s, SD1’s and classic Range Rovers so the SD1’s are close to my heart all my Dad’s cars were V8’s I’ve been wanting a SD1 for years and finally got one last year a 1984 vandenplas 2600 auto I really wanted a V8, I got the car back on the road and the 2600 engine has been a joy the only thing that drives me to put a V8 in it is that a lot of parts for the 2600 engine are getting hard to get, It’s always good to hear someone like yourself giving good feedback about the 2600 engine as they get quite a negative review from a lot of people, Looking forward to your next video cheers Chris 👍

      The 2600 is a hidden gem, yes the parts availability is pretty bad for the 2.3/2.6 engines, however I imagine your a member of the club and there’s people that do have NOS parts kicking about for them and people with knowledge on parts interchangeability from other engines (off memory the tensioner can be adapted from a pinto) obviously she’s your car and I wouldn’t wanna step in your way of dropping a V8 into her, but they truly are a good engine, I’d just recommend getting the cylinder head oil port upgrade (loads of info in the club about it) aside that they never really go, done 200,000 in 2600’s before effortlessly

Have see a few posts on the quality of cylinder gaskets as new parts and such items are getting rare as well.

    I never understood why they did not market the SD1 as Jaguar XJ-U type instead of the strange XJS, the Rover V8 was much more reliable and easier to maintain compared to the V12 that tended to drop valve seats....

    • @thatroverguy1937
      @thatroverguy1937  2 місяці тому +2

      To my understanding they designed the XJS in a way (narrow inner wings or something to that nature) to prevent the RV8 from being fitted, I’ve had XJS V12’s and aside the incredibly poor economy of them they’ve never really let me down, the last one I had was a 5.9 EFi 1990 ish, the starter went on it, and I kid you not what a job, everything about them is a nightmare to work on, I bought my first XJS as a half finished engine swap, the lad had put a HE engine into an injected car and became overwhelmed by the electrics, I wouldn’t say they’re an underrated car (XJS) in fact I’d say they’re vastly overhyped, poor economy, not overly fast and above all they rot terribly, far far far worse than any Rover

    • @Schlipperschlopper
      @Schlipperschlopper 2 місяці тому +3

      @@thatroverguy1937Well in USA they easily swap a Chevy Small Block in the XJS so any Buick V8 should also fit! In Germany during the 1980s some even fitted Mercedes 5.6, 6,0, and even 6,9 litre V8 engines from crashed 450SEL 6,3/6.9 In Germany the v12 did not last very long on the Autobahn they mostly dropped valve seats after long fast trips.

      @@Schlipperschlopper very interesting, I know the V12 is highly detuned, aren’t they something like 280hp at the highest (aside the lister) I’ve never swapped anything in an XJ and to be frank I probably never will, or well now I’m giving it thought maybe would, they do have a timeless look, but my experience’s with them has always been somewhat tragic, the only “good” one I had was a 5.9 I daily drove for 4-5 months, but 7-8mpg got tiresome, that along with the seating position isn’t comfortable and somehow the auto box feels really arcane

      Could there be a day coming of people taking V8’s out of converted 2600/2300’s and going back to the big 6! Ironically the engines are getting nigh impossible to find now, but I’ve pretty much always been a big believer in them, very underrated engines, I think they were in one heck of a shadow being pitted against the V8’s, and by god the Honda 2.7 is in my opinion one of the better V6’s you can get, not rare to find high mileage 2.7’s, they rattle a bit after 100,000 but doesn’t affect the performance, I was proper blown away after driving my first 827, 100% Granada/XJ8 killers, criminally underrated cars, I’ll defo do a deeper dive into 800’s

    Lovely bit of history there, a "de specc'd" VDP, was it ever a Police car, unmarked maybe?. I know that the Int Corps (DET) used these in Northern Ireland as well for "getting about". Nice for the shout out to Tom, I follow him as well and he's a great fella. i'm learning loads watching his channel along with yours, and I really hope your channels take off.
    A single japspeed Turbo would be awesome, although maybe forged pistons might be needed,drop the compression a bit and maybe strengthen some of the internals.
    Do the V8's run better on Carbs then - How do they get on with maybe a Holley conversion?. I don't know a thing about the Rover V8 other than the general info off wiki and the net.
    Thanks for the upload, so pleased I found your channel. It's interesting and you're not boring mate. People like me, fellow petrolheads who remember these old girls, although I'm not a Rover guy I like to learn about stuff from people with a genuine passion. I had no idea Rover were so far ahead with these cars back in the day. Who knows what might have happened if things turned out different with BL and the Unions etc.
    I also think the 800 series were very underrated, old bill used them back in the day and they were always Traffic and pretty rapid.

    • @thatroverguy1937
      @thatroverguy1937  3 місяці тому +1

      This particular car actually has some pretty amazing history attached to her, some people in the club do know its history and I think throughout the videos of completing this engine swap I’ll reveal a bit more about her history but she wasn’t an ex police car, though it would make more sense it being such low spec,
      So it is a little more complicated than the fact of running with carbs on vs EFi, the EFi engines run a different CR so they have different pistons in them, and earlier V8’s also had smaller valves, so there’s actually a fair bit of difference between the carb and EFi engines, the Lucas intake was fairly pioneering for its time, there was numerous gremlins with it, 1 being fuel vaporisation, and in fact Rover did do a dealership quick fix with a stainless plate to cover the fuel lines, I think to be fair it depends on how the engine has been treated over its life, if it’s overheated and disturbed the liner at any point (even if it hasn’t cracked) it’s likely to move over and over again until it cracks or disturbs the seal
      Yes you need to run a different set of piston for a turbo build, along with a different sump headers and obviously the turbo/turbos, a common fault with the Japspeed turbos are the manifolds crack, finding original ones that haven’t cracked is very hard nowadays as they weren’t an over common thing to see back in the day
      I was SD crazy and my friend had bought a J reg 827 Vitesse and said I should take her for a spin, I gave it a go and we’ll go be honest I was blown away at how much more modern they feel, they truly are unsung heroes

      Yes you can do, they literally just interchange, but obviously you lose a degree of power when you run a set of twin carbs, a more comparable intake would be quad hollies or eidlebrocks or even IBT’s, there’s arguments for both fuel systems, in all fairness it’s very arcane the standard intake on the EFi SD1’s, and the over heating issue is to a degree sorted by the introduction of the 3.9 engines, for personal reasons in terms of intakes I am not a fan of distributors and get rid of them where and when I can lol
