This episode was so sad, yet so beautiful, so triumphant. "We live in you". Nothing was lost that wasn't already lost. This way, the people of Kataan took a second chance at life.It isn't sad, but it still makes me cry.
His life from the memories of Kataan is so beautiful .. his lovingly supportive wife, children.. and grandchild, its absolutly fantastic! They really could have made a whole movie about his life there.
Many much longer movies have less amount of meaningfull content than this episode. It is an exceptional way how those short scenes from Kamin's (Picard) life are stimulating viewer through subtle dialogues and inner consistency to fill the gaps by his own imagination and inducing feeling of a profound and complex story.
Certainly one of the the best episodes of Star Trek ever made. The cast and crew still talk about it and there are certainly many references and interview videos on UA-cam. That an orcestral suite was made from Picard's highly nostalgic and emotional tin whisle piece, is full testement to the importance and meaning of this episode. Fiction or not, this story may well have played out along similar lines in our universe over billions of years. Returning to the orchestral suite what a great honour & privilege ii is to be able to play a few minutes of this suite on solo violin - something unimaginable for me even a few years ago ! Thank you Captain Jean Luke Picard for passing on the message, it was and still is very special indeed.
Wonderfully written comment 👏👏👏 There are very few pieces of music or songs that can move me to tears, without fail, but this is top of the list by a mile! The episode itself is my fave, by a similar margin 😍😢
The episode was breath taking. When Jean Luc started to play the flute, an instrument he had never touched, it was magical. I cried like a baby. "25 minutes"
Proof that Jay Chattaway could do great music when he was given the chance. Rick Berman severely restricted him the rest of the time, but with "The Inner Light", Chattaway was allowed to really go to town, and he delivered.
I hope that someday we'll get another Star Trek that had as much depth and optimism as the next generation. The Inner Light is easily one of my favourite episodes as it gives us a little glimpse of why Picard was just such an amazing character. He literally had an entire lifetime worth of memories in him.
Hands down the best musical composition. I’m a trekky thanks to this show… captain Picard reminds me of my dad and I can’t not cry every time hearing this
Just hearing this 'old folk melody' makes me want to learn to play the tin whistle, simply to play this! Don't know how I'd ever manage though..... I get all teary after about 12 notes 😢 Such deep & haunting emotion, combined with serenity. Absolutely beautiful 😍
Best episode in the Series, and thats saying a lot for such an amazing show. I’ve shed a few tears for many of the episodes, but when I saw this episode I cried, both the melody and the message of being remembered, hit so hard, beautiful, simply beautiful❤️
A beautiful piece of music based off the" Skye Boat Song" in Celtic music traditions! Easily, one of the best ST:TNG episodes in the whole series, such a well written story. When Picard is with Nella Darren, playing his Resskian Flute, and Geordi saying "I thought I heard music, is one of my favorite episodes too. When Picard holds that flute and clutches it tightly, I wept. Such raw emotion without saying anything.
Was it sad though? Eline, Meribor, Batai, they were already dead. They had been for a thousand years. Through Picard, through his new memories, his new experiences, they existed again, not in history, but as friends, loved ones. They found new life. "The rest of us have been gone a thousand years. If you remember what we were - and how we lived, then we'll have found life again." Beautiful, emotional, yes. But no, not sad.
A long time ago, I thought it was similar to 'skye boat song' when I listened to this flute. Like John Boswell's piano and whitle, picard and crew play together. thank u so much. 감사합니다 ^^ 🛸 🎼 🚣♀️
This particular rendition came from "Lessons" episode. The flute only version is found in "The Inter Light" episode. "The Inter Light" episode is my favorite.
This seems to be in a lower key. The piano arrangement is also a bit different. Here's the clip of the duet from "Lessons". ua-cam.com/video/c4y_oWBiwAo/v-deo.html
I truly hope we will one day get a Star Trek series again that follows in the footsteps of the bittersweet, but hopeful science fiction that the franchise once was, rather than chasing the popularity of space fantasies like Star Wars.
One of the things that impressed me about TNG is the use of music in their episodes, both as part of the story line and the soundtrack. So many examples of beautiful music through out the series. Here's another piece that is beautifully sad but is also inspiring. ua-cam.com/video/y2tOduiRRKI/v-deo.html
Is there anyone else out there who thinks that WE need to set up some sort of memory device? - Something that any potential future intelligence, that happens along the remnants of our little suicidal species, can understand? There are so many of us who would really hate to see the good we have accomplished, be destroyed by the fools of our world. A human version of the Kataan probe.
They should find a way to put this in Picard Season 2 or 3. Imho this is "the Picard theme". Heck, they should make this the intro theme, it works well with the season one story too...
I was just researching this when I found this video because towards them end when his son is playing the flute there's a remarkably similar triad of notes from the "Picard" theme. I'm just making sure I wasn't hallucinating.
no they dont. next generation has its diamond stories for sure. and the new star trek is not remotely as good compareed to them. however not all episodes where this good, but this is definitly one of the best
The planet died 1000 years prior. Meribor: "You've taught me to pursue the truth, no matter how painful it is. It's too late to back off now. This planet is dying." Eline: "The rest of us have been gone a thousand years. If you remember what we were, and how we lived, then we'll have found life again. Now we live in you. Tell them of us... my darling."

"Seize the time, Meribor - live now! Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again." - Jean Luc Picard.
A man is not dead while his name is still spoken.
A planet is not dead while his flute is still played.
IM NOT CRYING IM NOT CRYING IM NOT CRYING IM NOT CRYING I SWEAR TO GOD.
Picard lived and touched more love and life than anyone could imagine would transpire in a lifetime.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made. Thank you for the post.
"I'm not crying. You're crying."
That's my reaction each time I rewatched this episode. Definitely one of the best Trek episode ever made.
This episode was so sad, yet so beautiful, so triumphant. "We live in you".

Hauntingly Beautiful.
Joyous and Sad at once.
I want this played at my funeral.
Same
@@Danol123 Me too!!
Same. And not because I want to be remembered. It'd for what lies ahead...
If they don't play it at mine, I ain't going 😉😢

He also was able to flex a bit for his score to “Tin Man”.
I just watched this episode for the first time. Wow! What a masterpiece!
Jay Chattaway is a magnificent musician

we got Picard and the last season was PHENOMENAL!
no. it wasn't. IN NO WAY!@@Josh-mv3qc
E01S01 of SNW was great (but not optimistic)
Hands down the best musical composition. I’m a trekky thanks to this show… captain Picard reminds me of my dad and I can’t not cry every time hearing this
This was from perhaps the best episode of the show and that is a difficult task to accomplish!
I agree
It won a Hugo award.
I believe it is the best Episode of any TV Series.
Science fiction or other..
Yes ...
Agreed
One of the best episodes ever made - to a large part due to its inclusion of a flute in its soundtrack! Gets me into tears every time...
Such a beautiful piece, I accidentally wrote "peace" at first but that works too. It kind of sounds like something from Lord of the Rings.
LOTR had a strong Celtic tone, and this piece is a Celtic tune. Also, they are both very mystical and spiritual.
Just hearing this 'old folk melody' makes me want to learn to play the tin whistle, simply to play this!
Don't know how I'd ever manage though..... I get all teary after about 12 notes 😢

Jay Chattaway - Unquestioned MASTER of Trek ballads! He did this AND Voyager..GENIUS! The final half of this suite is unbelievable :D
The piano accompaniment is lovely
The greatest piece of Star Trek music ever written
Every time I think about this episode I remember why I LOVE STAR TREK!
This is a brilliant piece of music that expressed the story narrative exceptionally well

One of the saddest episodes of STNG ever
just saw it again last night and I started to shed tears.
Coming in at a close second, for me anyway, is "Reunion" and especially the last scene when Alexander asks Worf if he's his father.
Was it sad though?

Andy B Very well said!
I’d call it moving and touching, not sad.
This was the best episode - it is like a movie - great - the music is also first class.
Haven’t seen this episode yet but I don’t think I’ll be able to hold it together as listening to the music I have tears in my eyes.
It might be sad,but its one of the best
Not only the best episode in the Star Trek Universe but the best hour of television ever.

It's crazy how my speakers become air-condition when playing this on my ROG 2. It gives an awesome effect that is even more chilling and relaxing.

Their sun went nova & destroyed the planet
Hard to believe this was for a TV show. Maybe GOT ost was the only modern one just as invested in.
Downton Abbey and Doctor Who also have some good music, Downton Abbey has a Scottish piece that is pretty.

This was Star Trek, much of what has come afterwards, not.
So what instrument was actually used to record this?
appalling how bad the new picard show is compared to the original.
