I am still in awe how a single piece of music, adapted from a science fiction TV show, could be arranged into such a beautiful orchestral piece. This piece was truly written by an extremely talented musician, and the composer arranging this is an absolute genius. What I particularly enjoy about this piece is that fact that it not only retains all that raw emotion of both happiness and sadness, just like in the particular episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but seems to add an extra element of beauty that is rarely captured by any remake. This tune "Inner Light" by Jay Chattaway is a recomposed excerpt from Max Bruch's Scottish Fantasy Op.46. Bruch wrote in in 1880, it runs for about 30 minutes, & is based around four Scottish folk tunes. The first tune I think sounds similar to this Chattaway piece - "Through the Wood Laddie". It's the first movement & also at the end of the second and fourth movements. This melody line reminds me of other Scottish folk tunes, such as The Skye Boat Song" & other lovely, haunting Scottish airs, like "Lonely Scapa Flow"
Thanks for the info. I had wondered if this lovely tune was based to some extent on an already existing melody. I am not surprised to find that it has old Scottish roots. I am fond of medieval and renaissance music from different countries, so I noticed how much this melody resembled those old tunes.🎷🎹🎻
I was thinking the Inner Light flute piece was somehow Scottish in origin or influence when I noticed the theme used for “Outlander” (Skye Boat Song) was very similar.
I've always thought it was inspired by 'El noi de la mare' - also, which part of the Scottish Fantasy do you think it sounds like? Information on this song has been an interest of mine for going on decades...
This piece and the associated episodes 'The Inner Light" and "Duet" are absolutely beautiful, charged with so much emotion, every time it makes my hair rise and my eyes fill with tears, and I keep coming back to it.

While Star Trek is hardly the most "sciencey" science fiction show out there, it's certainly the most high-minded one. What gave it such enduring powers was not just adventures in space and new gadgets, both of which were done better by later shows, but its dedication to uncompromising humanism, an aspect missed entirely by nearly all Star Trek films. In addition to forcing the writers, most of the time, to come up with unusual conflicts and resolutions, this has also made it one of the few optimistic settings in a generally bleak genre. Just love playing this, its almost like a sea shanty. I sit at the beach watching dolphins at play under the stars and whistle this melody. I would love it played at my funeral for its beauty and simplicity....
It was and still is my favorite TNG episode and the music was a big part of the reason for that. To live a whole other life in minutes, like dreaming… The writers should have won an award for that. And I would think what made that special for Sir Patrick was to have his own son portray his son in the episode.
This reminds me of my father and the time we shared watching Star Trek, and me growing up with him teaching me so many things, how to build things, repair plumbing, we read the same books. He is forever in my heart.

this is a masterpiece, done with small budget, when you realize it was done for a one episode in a series, it is even more amazing :)
Just love playing this, its almost like a sea shanty. I sit at the beach watching dolphins at play under the stars and whistle this melody. I would love it played at my funeral for its beauty and simplicity....
The most beautiful piece of Star Trek music ever ! Thank you (believe it was Macarthy) . It kills me as well .
Nice music... but it cannot possibly have the same depth of meaning to anyone who never saw "The Inner Light" episode of TNG.
Nor should it. But I don't know if that's even a bad this, or relevant. This is a beautiful piece on its own with weight.
True, but maybe this exposure on the Tube will lead others to watch the episode. I will certainly do so, if I come across a full copy of it anywhere.
@@marklammas2465It’s on Netflix
It was and still is my favorite TNG episode and the music was a big part of the reason for that.
To live a whole other life in minutes, like dreaming… The writers should have won an award for that. And I would think what made that special for Sir Patrick was to have his own son portray his son in the episode.
This reminds me of my father and the time we shared watching Star Trek, and me growing up with him teaching me so many things, how to build things, repair plumbing, we read the same books. He is forever in my heart.
Danke.
EPIC!!! For the Trekkie & the non!!! All the hairs are standing up on my arms & neck!!!
Absolutely the best Star Trek episode. Season 5 episode 25. 25 years later it’s onre of my sons favorite now. Half a life time for my journey, as he starts his own. Kamin thanks for sharing yours
Einfach " nur " schön !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ganz ganz toll.
Toll gemacht!!!!!
beautiful presentation... vielen dank
The best episode of TNG series ... and it spanned 7 seasons.
Beautiful and makes me emotional every time I hear this wonderful piece of music.
Sublime. My favorite Trek episode, and favorite music piece
I saw that episode of Star Trek when it was first aired, and it melted my heart when I saw it. And every time I hear that music, it brings back those feelings and memories all over again. Absolutely beautiful! It makes one think that maybe, just maybe, there is some hope for the human species. Thank you!
i've heard many people play this on various instuments over the years, but i dont think i've heard anything as beautiful as this, i hope to learn to play this some day,
@AnthonyMills Go get yourself a whistle! The Clarke original whistle, or a Dave Shaw, looks closest to the Ressikan flute which Picard played in the story (and elsewhere!).
how could people dislike this
People who dislike this music and performance...miss the entire point.
UA-cam bots... the ones people pay for likes, randomly go out to videos and up and down vote things to make them look more human in their actions to trick detection.
Romulans disliked this....They are cold and have no emotions
what an amazing piece
You are SO right. That will ALWAYS be my Favorite episode.
Amazing Beautiful, TRULY. Worlds... No words.
Beautiful. What an amazing story. This is the best television can be.
A Ressikan flute. lol. wonderful rendition.
Vielen lieben Dank. Das ist so schön arrangiert. Ihr habt mich zu Tränen gerührt.
Season 5 episode 25, my favorite Next Gen episode. I have requested my so to have this played at my funeral. A full life lived. In a galactic blink of the eye. This episode and this song ladies and gentlemen represents humanity to me. I tear up every time I listen to it. Thank you so much for sharing this.
The episode ALWAYS makes me cry. It's so emotional.
So beautiful song .
This is very well orchestrated. The Saxophones blend perfectly.
Magnífica. Hermosa.
Beautiful and congratulations from Mexico.
Thank you.
Just utterly magical. Reminds me of Outlander's "Over the Sea to Skye".
My favourite episode. It's shows a deep way at growing as been for Picard story, and how a sublime way to show the deepness of a 'common' life, the value of the untouchable.
It so nice to watch once again Inner light ..😭 this orchestra is amazing
