- The official lyric video for "A Rose For Emily" by The Zombies off the album "Odessey and Oracle."
LYRICS:
Though summer’s here at last
The sky is overcast
And no-one brings a rose for Emily
She watches her flowers grow
While lovers come and go
To give each other roses from her tree
But not a rose for Emily
Emily, can’t you see
There’s nothing you can do?
There’s loving everywhere
But none for you…
Her roses are fading now
She keeps her pride somehow
That’s all she has protecting her from pain
And as the years go by
She will grow old and die
The roses in her garden fade away
Not one left for her grave
Not a rose for Emily
Emily, can’t you see
There’s nothing you can do?
There’s loving everywhere
But none for you…
Her roses are fading now
She keeps her pride somehow
That’s all she has protecting her from pain
And as the years go by
She will grow old and die
The roses in her garden fade away
Not one left for her grave
Not a rose for Emily

The zombies are criminally underrated.
Totally agree,This was a super group.Saw them live in Niagara Falls casino and was amazed at the musicianship in that band.
Absolutely loved S-town. Hearing this song at the end of every episode always brought me a lot of joy.
I was looking at old Zombie songs and clicked on this one because I didn't think I'd heard it. Bam, I was back in S-town, LOL. I never made the connection.
OMG, yes!! That's how I got introduced to this song!
Odessey And Oracle is a "must have" album.
If you can afford it 😂
This ones for you John B. 💙
This song is perfect for John I can’t get his story out of my head no matter how hard I try
Who’s John?
@@dannyhernandez265 he is from a podcast s town you should give it a listen
Emily must be a relative of Eleanor Rigby, another hard-luck dame with a sublime melody
i love the beatles
Recorded in the same studio (Abbey Road, London), using the same engineer (Geoff Emerick?), 4-track recorder, board, microphones, etc.

I know Colin well. He told me they nicked a load of random unusual instruments off the Beatles that they left in Abbey Road, that ended up on Odessey.
It's a short story by William Faulkner

Even if it was the worst trip I've ever been on, it was still a great sloop.

Me too! Absolutely loving this story. Was told by the person who treated me to it that all the people are real.. even John's maze is real. How cool is that?
Such a talented band. I saw them locally at an intimate venue 300 people. 15 years ago, they did a meet and greet after the gig. Top Stuff great memories of the CLASS ACT THE ZOMBIES!
Been a fan since the early Sixties by the way.
The 2019 Rock n Roll Hall of Fame brought me here. Congratulations guys!
Totally thought this was a Beatles song before I looked it up. Nicely done.
....for John B....
Rest in peace John B.
Still my favorite 60’s album, even beats The Beatles for me
My word these divine guys are so utter joyful with harmonies to match ,,
Here for John B. ❤️
I was listening to psychedelic radio station, and this one popped after Eleonor Rigby, Oh my God, Being 17 I simply believe 60s and 70s music will never be matched
I agree!
A British rock group singing about one of America's greatest short stories. Wow.
The title for this song is so apt. The song itself sounds as a flower would
I feel you emily :(
I thought to myself "why don't I look up songs with my name in it?" I hoped to feel loved for a moment.
This... Ouch... hahaha
Good song though!
Based off the short story a rose for Emily
The influence from pet sounds its really clear
The loneliness lyricism and the rhythm probably influenced by Eleanor Rigby.
Ha, it clicked as soon as I read this! Cleared up a mental block on my end :)
perfect‼︎
its a wonderful song. I just read "A Rose For Emily" and thought it the song would reflect the story....the story is WAY more morbid!
Yooo, I just had to read it in my high school English class...
I went on this because an author wrote that this song distills Faulkner's story into 2'18". It doesn't. Yes, wonderful melody and keyboard part, but no hint of the grotesque necrophilia that ends the story.

Bizarre.
The sweet melancholy of the song is utterly divorced from Faulkner's nasty story.
same
Wish I could give her one 😢
Same.
Phrasing!
Mahalo for sharing. :-)
a clusterfuck of sorrow
This might seem strange but I find this Song is like a sequel song to Pink Floyds See Emily Play but by a different band ...In one song its about the Happy Life of Emily and A rose for Emily is kind of a Sad ending for her
I kinda get a Beatles vibe in this song you know?
Hello, I think I have a strong theory of the meaning of this beautiful song. I think Emily, in the song, is the daughter of an extremely cruel and abusive family, parents and relatives, all crazy and abusive. She's both experienced and witnessed abuse all her life, and as a result, she's completely ashamed, embarrassed and humiliated at being part of her family, and therefore cannot bring herself to think of herself as lovable or capable of finding a love of her own. So she stays at home and stays away from all others, refusing to be social in any way, for fear that others would be hurt as she's been.
Notice the repeated lyrics:
"no one brings a rose for Emily",
"She watches her flowers grow
While lovers come and go
To give each other roses from her tree
But not a rose for Emily"
"Emily, can't you see
There's nothing you can do?
There's loving everywhere
But none for you"
etc.
This is such a beautiful, and sad song, and Emily knows she'll grow old and die, knowing if she ever tries to escape, she risks spreading the abuse and shame, and the pain, of herself and fer family, to others, something she never, ever wants to do! And trust me, Emily truly and hoesty feels that she is probably the cause of it all, even when she knows it's been going on since before she was ever born, so she feels that it's her responsibility to 'be responsible' and stay away from others, so as not to hurt anyone.
I know this because this is how I myself feel, because of myself and my own family. I am, however, a male, but I can still absolutely relate.
I am sorry if I seem nuts or crazy or stupid, assuming anyone ever even reads this
I believe it is mostly influenced by the story named, "A Rose for Emily" where she did have an overbearing father who basically shooed away any possible suitor.
It is a reference to William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily," in which Emily Grierson is the last of her once great aristocratic family that has fallen in this post civil war county. She secluded herself in her home after the death of her father, only being seen once every couple years. Her father had caused many of her mental issues. He denied any suitor that came her way. Through all of her pain caused by the town's pity and disgust toward her, the death of her only lover, suicide attempt with rat poison, etc. she keeps her pride as a Grierson because that's all she has left. "She keeps her pride somehow, that's all she has protecting her from pain"
She was looked upon by the town's people as some mystery because she was so secluded, but they also kept it that way. They sort of avoided confrontation with her as well because she was a standing monument of the old south, something southerners at that time wanted to maintain. Despite the fact that she was changing and going mad even, the townspeople shaped her image into what they wanted it to be.
However, Emily did get one lover, and she found a way to keep him forever. At the time of her fathers death, she kept the body for as long as she could. We can assume this is because she wanted control that he never let her have. Now that he's dead, she has his body and can do as she pleases. Later in the story, we see that she learned from this experience. It can be interpreted that she doesn't buy the poison for herself, but rather for her new lover. There are clues that give us insight into their relationship, telling us that that it might not have been so great. Husbands, too, at that time weren't exactly the type to let their wives have freedom or control. Given these pieces of evidence, we can see that Emily learned that through death she can keep control, so she bought the poison as both control over her own life and that of her lover.
After her death much later, the townspeople enter her home out of morbid curiosity toward the town hermit. They found upstairs, in a room that had not been seen in at least forty years, the dead rotted body of her lover, and beside him an impression in the bedding along with a single grey hair resting on the pillow. This implies the presence of necrophilia. She used the control that she had obtained. She would now forever have a lover that listened, that stayed.
They admitted that they were inspired by William Faulkner's masterpiece A Rose For Emily

The strangest part of this song is that roses don't even grow on trees
Sounds better than saying "roses from her bush" though doesn't it? :D
@@tcaudiobooks737 yeah but bush is more appropriate... "Roses from her bush, but not a rose for Emilush" (does sound wrong, you've a good point)

My Emily, my Gram ! I remember her garden filled with roses. I was there when her flower club honored her with First Place. She had 2 marriages to “quiet men” and no real joy, but for her roses.
I hope she knew what difference the memory of her loving ways helped me in the troubled years of my young adult life. We all have our Emily, somewhere. Thanks Gram ❤️.
Oh, her name was “Emily”.
Rose bush is more appropriate than tree (both biologically & metaphorically), but "...roses from her bush, but not a rose for Emilush..." just doesn't sound right... too bad, they really could have slipped in a good, raunchy reference there.

Eleanor Rigby*
Sorry but no.William Faulkner.
I read the news today oh boy, about an unoriginal band who copied the beatles.
In your humble opinion, dude. Good luck finding people who share it.
@@terenceoneill3075 Many People don't even know the beatles, therefore it's a mission impossible. I think it should be much easier to find someone who thinks that space time is doomed, then to find someone who knows the zombies.
@@NobbisLover That's why there's something called undiscovered treasures, like that song or Time of the Season. You say there are many people who have never heard of the Beatles. OK, brilliant. Thre are many people who have never heard of Beethoven, Jesus Christ, or RIchard NIxon. So? Don't pick on stuff out of spite, OK? Be more chill!
Wow! That's a very limited, and narrow world view! While I agree that the two songs have a similar vibe, they are different, and equally interesting. Eleanor Rigby is one of my favorite songs. A Rose For Emily compliments it in a very flattering way!
I expected a lot of this, heard it praised to the skies - and all I hear is a banal tune, and mindlessly callous lyrics presumably penned by callow youths. Its rubbish.
