The handshake at the end is a LOT colder than the big near-hug and embrace they tend to give one another today. The whole thing seemed a lot more tense and epic than today's game, at least between these two. I'm not saying it's better - just a different vibe.
I think Jimbo was particularly frustrated once Lendl figured out the code to beat Jimbo; just bunt the ball back to Jimmy's forehand and physically outlast him. I'm sure there were other tactics, etc but that seemed to be the obvious approach.
This was during an era of some "bad boy" (relative to traditional tennis in the past) American tennis players dominating the scene. It was competitiveness without any pretense of niceness or sportsmanship and it was popular and refreshing at that time (like how some other 1v1 sports drum up anticipation and excitement). However, it got so bad that eventually viewers and referees got sick of it and there was push back against it.
Lendl pretty well had Conners number most of his career. More than any other player did because Conners did the same to almost everyone else. Still not friends either.
Absolutely. If you've ever hit with a T2000, you know the sweet spot is the size of a dime, and anything outside of that goes nowhere. It's a testament to Connors' hand-eye coordination but more than that his footwork.
Whoever says that these guys didn’t hit the ball hard is dreaming.
This umpire is not willing to be a whipping boy
That umpire having a conversation with Jimmy. You should never do that.
4:33 "Fuck!" Love it. These cats could play, man. Really.
Jimmy is a legend!
Perhaps Hammond should have heeded Ivan’s request and changed the linesman- as had for Connors earlier on , needs to be fair to both players!
always nice to see conners loose
lose
Imagine how Hawkeye and the challenge system would have changed this match!
“I’m out here playing my butt off and you’re going to do that to me?” Sounds very similar to what he said to David Littlefield against Krickstein.
Hi Nick yes! I love Jimmy Connors! He was hilarious! 💘💘💘💘
"I'm out here playing my butt off at 39 years old and your doing this?" Kmsl that man was something else! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Amazing tennis player , funny .
Kudos to the empire for not putting up with their BS.
Frank Hammond was taken out of the 1979 US Open tournament during the McEnroe / Nastase match ..... never to be seen again!!
Stressful match! I love Lendl and I’m glad he won

Jimmy Connors was always so turned up! Lol 🎾🎾🎾
interesting to see Connors playing with the steel frame Wilson T200. I used to have one of them - awful racquet, very small head compared to today.

A very patient umpire to bear player tantrums!
Ye Gods the umpire 2:50 sounds like Richie Cunningham's dad in 'Happy Days'.
There was never a better chair umpire than Frank Hammond! As a Jimmy Connors fan, I am annoyed about his tantrum towards Frank Hammond.
Frank Hammond was the only umpire McEnroe liked. Jimmy trying to use the guilt trip.
Guilt trip...?
@@SMSJSC Guilt trip.
Frank Hammond was old-school and still the most famous chair umpire in tennis history.
In part because of Mac, Jimmy, Nasty.... ironically.
They weren't happy......
Jimmy -- sassy and bratty in this video, as per usual
The kind of biased umpiring Lendl had to put up is unbelievable. The Americans played as a team to ensure they gave Ivan a tough fight 😂
Thank you for your story. Thank you so much!
Absolutely pitiful line calling in this match...some of the worst I've ever seen.
I don’t understand why someone had just beat connors ass on the court for his behavior. The man is a complete disaster for the game of tennis.
Connors cant even stay in Lendl shoe..so superior and New modern way of playing by Lendl...Jimmy is def not near Lendl
What?
Connors past his prime; Lendl in his prime when this match was played.
📢HEY JIMMY CONNORS: Billy Idol tells you "you're such a human waste"; and "you're eyes without a face".
