@@anonymous4711_ In my opinion, Lendl has the characteristics of the modern player, due to his style of play, which is what most resembles how it is played today and also due to his technique, I am not saying that he uses the refined mechanics that players have today thanks to technologies but he laid the foundations of the technique that we know today. We must also consider that with his style of play he achieved great achievements compared to the serve and volley style of those years.

Just look at his groundstrokes: topspin from both sides, forehand using wrist and compare to flat strokes of McEnroe typical for the era before. Lendl was also one of the first players to take care of physical condition including diet and took the training and preparation to the more professional level as we know it now.
Lendl was the reason I abandoned watching and playing tennis. This guy made me sleep in each time when he met another "prototype". They killed the artists, luckily, without being rotten out, and some start to emerge again. Players like Lendl hold a hammer in their hand, while players like McEnroe hold a drumstick. I remember this match, I am a McEnroe fan, I was fascinated by his serve and volley tennis, which was pure poetry; no man dare to play like him at Roland Garros like it was at Wimbledon, and, each time I see this final, I can't understand how he could play so divinely, and I can't accept he lost. Anyway, match like this and player like them, made kids like us to love tennis and making a tennis court in our church car park, and spend hours in playing that amazing sport, where it's not finished until it's finished.

Any comeback like Lendl's is amazing, but to do so on clay on a very hot June day is nearly impossible. Lendl later said the heat and intense level of play on the soft "Roland Garros" clay were so weakening that he had to quietly throw up on the sidelines. Lendl finally showed the world he could win and that underneath that tough exterior he had heart and grit. This French Open match did affect both players' careers. It was an exciting, pivotal moment for both. Wow.

People miss the equipment factor. This is graphite racquet with normal strings and small in size some 80-85 sq inch. Current raquets are much bigger in isize 15-20% bigger and poly strings that add more top spin. Lots of shots played with current raquets can never be played with old raquets. Instead calling players from previous ers as inferior,people should ask how current players can play with these old raquets and still be able to play those top spin and win consistently. Those raquets used by John and Lendl require pure skill to opeate. Birg used much heavier wooden raquets to win 6 FO.
Don't miss the training factor through their entire youth. Players today train much more explosiveness, feeding themselves with creatine and alike, when they train aerobic, they wear an oxygen limiting mask, when they workout, the block the blood flow in the upper arms. They gain more power and endurance with less training. HITT did not exist when McEnroe played. Their body has changed. Recovery has improved too, they take an ice bath after a game, to restrict blood vessels and recover faster from accumulated lactate and inflammation in the tissues. They can play at a high level alost a decade longer.

I just watched this now and remember a couple of the crucial moments in this match back from watching this in 1984, 12 years old. I remember wanting Lendl to win, and he did in the end. I was so happy for Ivan!

To this day, the greatest display of offensive tennis (serve&volley, to be more specific) on a clay court, in tennis history. It doesn't even matter he lost that match in the end, the tennis he played for the entire match, especially in the first two sets, is simply legendary
I am but a tennis amateur, but I am always surprised that the Serve/Volley tactic works so well in the pros. (Keeping in mind that the receiver is ALSO a pro, so you would think they would have perfected both lobs and passing shots to counter it). Even on a very good serve.
Ain't that the truth !! I used to think that modern or current eras in tennis - particularly the big 3 era - were unequal d in terms of skills & greatness. But not now. I challenge anyone who doesn't believe ; put any of the big three back in , say the 90 , s era - which was particularly strong , put them back up against the best of that period using the SAME equipment and resources - they would not could not reach 20 slams or more each - no way.

@@brunsbruns2377The courts are more consistent and standardized now...the higher bounce enables playing from behind the baseline...there was a reason players with two-handed backhands were rarely successful at Wimbledon for instance as the low ball was difficult to deal with and you would need to get down low to play...now the game is waist and shoulder height everywhere...modern players are like machines requiring consistent pace and bounce but they would find it tough to play on inconsistent surfaces where more reflexes oriented technique is required and they would have to change the way the play...
It was a Great Match in RG in 1984. I learned an important Lesson from the Champion Ivan Lendl. Never lose a grip and confidence till last second in a fight. This was a very high quality match. Both these guys were at the top of their forms in '84. This has been sighted before by others (incl Mc himself), but the critical point was in the 7th game of the 5th when McEnroe netted that down the line forehand. That was THE turning point imo. Both guys continued to play well, but Lendl's performance, which he had already cranked up considerably, was on fire after that. Thanks for posting !
McEnroe won 5 majors before 1984 and won His 2 at Wimbledon and New York that same year. 40 years already. Time flies. Lendl finally wins his 1 of 8 majors here, after losing major finals starting at the French Open in a 1981 5 set final against Bjorn Borg, the last major Borg ever won. In many ways Lendl picked up where Borg left off in retirement. A great baseliner who could pick apart wonderful serve volley players in huge moments.
I cannot recall this game but the 3rd set is the beginning of the end. Crucial moment is the net ball of McEnroe at 40-30 and 3-3 in the final set. If he would have made that crucial passing ball, he would have won the match I think. He remains my favorite of all times, even being enfant terrible but his subtle technique and style, let alone his service are special and unmatched.
I'm from city where Lendl was born and played as junior. His childhood was similar to chess players Polgars sisters. Only tennis. I will be number one. Trained hard and after ten years of such hard training he took big dividends.

While I believe that Djokovic is the greatest player of all time…he, Fed and Nadal were the only show in town for two decades. None of them would have won half the Slams they did if they played in the 70s and 80s…

@@rajusaha855 I grew up watching during that era and no data will prove to my own eyes that the quality of players was much deeper and better back then…the fact that a guy like Nadal who is literally a one-dimensional player could win as much as he has is a testament to that. Give that guy a standard size racket and he would have been an NPC during the 70s and 80s when players were forced to be all around players due to the rackets and strings…

Lendl is great but he was or (everybody) is step below big 3. Big 3 able to maximize in all three categories needed to be the GOAT i.e talent, longevity & consistency with versatility which past legend never did. Players like Borg, Mcenroe, Connors, Lendl, Sampras & Agassi didn't have excelled in all three categories. Of course I didn't count Laver, Rosewall & Gonzales as they were played majority of their tennis in pre open era with different tour structure.
What an incredible match. The level got higher and higher as the match progressed. Neither player gave an inch and both were willing to do whatever it takes. The contrast in styles made strategy and tactics very clear for each player, so all they had to worry about was execution. Very entertaining.
At this time, there was a great diversity of games. Some players were baseliners, other played volley (Edberg). Some played with touch (McEnroe or Messi), others with power (Lendl). Some played 2-handed-backhands (Connors), others one-handed (Vilas). Some were more aggressive, others more patient (Borg). Today, all players seem to have the same kind of game, based only on baseline power with 2-handed backhands.

I am sure there were folks like you watching this in 1984 saying 1944 was the heyday and how Mac and Lendl couldn't win if they had to use the same racquets as Bobby Riggs and Pancho Gonzalez et al. Serve and Volley in Clay 😀. McEnroe is very skillful to stretch and harass Ivan like that in Clay. Great Match. Great highlights. Credit to Ivan as well - to come so far from behind. He was clutch and steady when he had to stave off those break points. I remember another gem (Agassi v Muster) in QF in the 90s. That was a great game as well. People who don't know much of.the history of tennis are quick to say roger is the most talented player ever. No sorry Johnny Mac is by far the most talented player to ever pick up a racket.

What a show! The times when hitting the ball at 220 km/h didn't pay off, and serve-and-volley ruled! Not only McEnroe, also Edberg was a master at that.

I vaguely remember watching this match on television. I was young then and just starting to find interest in tennis. Seeing the highlights today, I can only say, McEnroe had this win on his strings. He let it get away from him. Today's tennis is really different from this.

McEnroe for sure one of the best hand-eye coordination of all time. I was a big fan, so were almost all my peers that picket up tennis around 1980. He showed us that tennis is creative, beautiful and emotional. And, of course, he cursed and threw raquets even more than we already did. Our moms hated his demeanor, our dads still turned on the tv when he played. I guess everyone has to find a valve for their emotions. Today i think, his behavior lost him some matches and was very disrespectful many times. But still like to watch his matches. Good old days. I grew up with him, as a teenage fan. And even played the dunlop 200g, which was way to heavy for a small junior, of course.
Tennis must come back to wooden rackets to gain back its charisma Lendl-McEnroe is still my ideal rivalry ...the 80s had a unique aura, and they were the symbols of those years. Opposite characters, opposite style of playing ....back when it was almost impossible to win all the year, in different superficies
En fait , il utilise une raquette très peu tendue, et prend la balle tôt, et se doit de jouer relacher. Je pense que d'autres joueurs pourraient s'inspirer de lui, mais pour des raisons inconnues, personne ne cherche à s'en inspirer. Ca vient aussi de l'école de tennis, très académique. Je pense que sa facon de jouer serait encore efficace aujourd'"hui. Ce qui est fou d'ailleurs c'est que personne n'essaye de s'inspirer de sa facon de servir. Pour l’anecdote, je m'étais mis au badminton, venant du tennis...je jouais au départ comme je joue au tennis, me prenant des roustes en permanence contre mon partenaire de jeu...Jusqu'au jour ou je me dis que je vais jouer au badminton, en mode mc enroe...reduction de la préparation des coups, me précipitant sur le volant etc...Résultat, dés la première fois, j'ai battu mon partenaire !
I was a huge Lendl fan and wore his Adidas shirts when I played tennis growing up. They should bring back some of the iconic ones like the argyle shirts he wore in this match. Having said that, the shirts I really wish they could bring back are Mad Mac’s equally iconic Sergio Tacchini shirts that he also wore in this match…so retro cool…
J'ai vu ce match un dimanche en famille, et tout le monde détestait Lendl. Moi j'étais adolescent , mon coup droit était celui de Lendl, mon revers celui de McEnroe, et mon service de Noah. Je voulais absolument que le vilain Mozart du tennis perde, moi. Que le grincheux, le caractériel doué, se prenne une raclée face au soi disant robot sans coeur qu'était Lendl. Je défendais Lendl comme Tim Burton défend le Pingouin. Le mal aimé hué par la foule. Je me souviens bien de ce repas de famille bourgeois où tout le monde applaudissait le sale gosse américain. Et c'est vrai qu'il a dominé le match de son talent extraordinaire fait de coups de pattes de chat. Et puis, tout doucement, mon héros des pays de l'Est à tronche de vampire anorexique s'est mis à remonter la pente et puis, progressivement, à renverser le match. Quel pied, sa balle de match concrétisée, enfin cette victoire à Roland Garros tant espérée! Merci pour ce résumé plein de souvenirs proustiens émouvants, à l'échelle de l'humble 15/1 que je fus au sommet de ma gloire. Aujourd'hui, en revoyant ce match, le talent des deux joueurs saute aux yeux. Le génie, la frustration, la volonté, les oppositions de genre, tous les éléments étaient réunis pour un match de légende. beh questo e' abbastanza soggettivo, io capisco che puo piacere un tennis giocato cosi perchè agli inizi era cosi, ma sinceramente io preferisco quello di adesso, il modo piu efficace per fare punto è quello di tirare piu forte possibile è per questo che il tennis oggi sia tutto cosi, ma comunque per me la bellezza di questo sport è sempre la stessa, sia con uno stile di gioco piu lento e tattico che uno di potenza.

Lendl started to play deeper shots in the third set therefore McEnroe couldnt volley so easy anymore and that turned the game.Though Lendl had a continental grip that made his one handed left shot weaker than nowadays, players now should noticed the way he bent down and the steadiness it gives.I still cant understand how Mcenroe could play that unorthodox style it was so agressive like a table tennis player. An epic match in History of tennis.
It's amazing that even on the slow clay of Paris that Mac was always looking for the opportunity to come in and volley. He came so close that day to winning but it was always going to be difficult to beat Lendl, a man who was brought up on European clay. A few weeks later Mac absolutely destroyed Jimmy Connors in the Wimbledon final, probably one of the shortest, most one sided men's finals in Wimbledon history.
The mid-80s were the last years that serve and volley was a winning strategy. With new racket technology and power hitting, only baseline players can succeed.

Definitely something special about sports back in the 70’s and 80’s . A purity about it and passion that just isn’t there anymore. I’m glad I saw it.

I remember this match, I am a McEnroe fan, I was fascinated by his serve and volley tennis, which was pure poetry; no man dare to play like him at Roland Garros like it was at Wimbledon, and, each time I see this final, I can't understand how he could play so divinely, and I can't accept he lost. Anyway, match like this and player like them, made kids like us to love tennis and making a tennis court in our church car park, and spend hours in playing that amazing sport, where it's not finished until it's finished.

This match. This match was, without any exaggeration, one of the biggest, epic comebacks in tennis history. Lendl had faced years of being called a "choker," accused of being too scared to win a Grand Slam title, and McEnroe knew that to cement his place in tennis history as a winner of all four majors he had to finally win the French Open.
This compilation is great, yet to understand its greatness, it needs to be watched in its entirety. It was a thrilling sporting event. That's why throughout this compilation you hear the excitement of the crowd, and the many "shhhh!!" moments throughout.
I watched this match when it first aired on U.S. television, and, as a huge Lendl fan, every point was agony to watch. I wrung my hands, hung my head down and willed myself to look, and spoke out loud, bemoaning Ivan's trials. He was losing to McEnroe on Johnny's worst surface! The hole Lendl had to crawl out of thanks to McEnroe's best game on clay was a HUGE ONE.
McEnroe tried to intimidate the umpire a bit, but he KNEW he couldn't have one of his tantrums. He knew he would lose the match if he did. He KNEW that even though Lendl was not French, he WAS European, and the French were mostly on Lendl's side. Most importantly, McEnroe KNEW clay was his worst playing surface, and it would be very unlikely for him to ever reach another French final. So he played amazing clay tennis.
Any comeback like Lendl's is amazing, but to do so on clay on a very hot June day is nearly impossible.
Lendl later said the heat and intense level of play on the soft "Roland Garros" clay were so weakening that he had to quietly throw up on the sidelines. Lendl finally showed the world he could win and that underneath that tough exterior he had heart and grit.
This French Open match did affect both players' careers. It was an exciting, pivotal moment for both. Wow.

People miss the equipment factor. This is graphite racquet with normal strings and small in size some 80-85 sq inch. Current raquets are much bigger in isize 15-20% bigger and poly strings that add more top spin. Lots of shots played with current raquets can never be played with old raquets. Instead calling players from previous ers as inferior,people should ask how current players can play with these old raquets and still be able to play those top spin and win consistently. Those raquets used by John and Lendl require pure skill to opeate. Birg used much heavier wooden raquets to win 6 FO.

Don't miss the training factor through their entire youth. Players today train much more explosiveness, feeding themselves with creatine and alike, when they train aerobic, they wear an oxygen limiting mask, when they workout, the block the blood flow in the upper arms. They gain more power and endurance with less training. HITT did not exist when McEnroe played. Their body has changed. Recovery has improved too, they take an ice bath after a game, to restrict blood vessels and recover faster from accumulated lactate and inflammation in the tissues. They can play at a high level alost a decade longer.

To this day, the greatest display of offensive tennis (serve&volley, to be more specific) on a clay court, in tennis history. It doesn't even matter he lost that match in the end, the tennis he played for the entire match, especially in the first two sets, is simply legendary

I am but a tennis amateur, but I am always surprised that the Serve/Volley tactic works so well in the pros. (Keeping in mind that the receiver is ALSO a pro, so you would think they would have perfected both lobs and passing shots to counter it). Even on a very good serve.

Ain't that the truth !! I used to think that modern or current eras in tennis - particularly the big 3 era - were unequal d in terms of skills & greatness. But not now. I challenge anyone who doesn't believe ; put any of the big three back in , say the 90 , s era - which was particularly strong , put them back up against the best of that period using the SAME equipment and resources - they would not could not reach 20 slams or more each - no way.
They wouldn't have a chance against Sinner, Djokovic, Alcaraz and others...

@@brunsbruns2377The courts are more consistent and standardized now...the higher bounce enables playing from behind the baseline...there was a reason players with two-handed backhands were rarely successful at Wimbledon for instance as the low ball was difficult to deal with and you would need to get down low to play...now the game is waist and shoulder height everywhere...modern players are like machines requiring consistent pace and bounce but they would find it tough to play on inconsistent surfaces where more reflexes oriented technique is required and they would have to change the way the play...

Je n’ai jamais vu un joueur faire le jeux service /volée pendant un match sur terre battue comme John mc Enroe. Aucun autre joueur avant ou après lui n’a pratiqué un tel tennis offensif et peu importe qu’il ait perdu cette finale, il reste un génie inégalé et probablement le plus grand tennisman de tous les temps. This was a very high quality match. Both these guys were at the top of their forms in '84. This has been sighted before by others (incl Mc himself), but the critical point was in the 7th game of the 5th when McEnroe netted that down the line forehand. That was THE turning point imo. Both guys continued to play well, but Lendl's performance, which he had already cranked up considerably, was on fire after that. Thanks for posting !
1984: Best McEnroe ever. Sharp groundstrokes forehand and backhand, great Serve and Volley. He never played like that again.

McEnroe won 5 majors before 1984 and won His 2 at Wimbledon and New York that same year. 40 years already. Time flies. Lendl finally wins his 1 of 8 majors here, after losing major finals starting at the French Open in a 1981 5 set final against Bjorn Borg, the last major Borg ever won. In many ways Lendl picked up where Borg left off in retirement. A great baseliner who could pick apart wonderful serve volley players in huge moments.

I cannot recall this game but the 3rd set is the beginning of the end. Crucial moment is the net ball of McEnroe at 40-30 and 3-3 in the final set. If he would have made that crucial passing ball, he would have won the match I think. He remains my favorite of all times, even being enfant terrible but his subtle technique and style, let alone his service are special and unmatched.

I'm from city where Lendl was born and played as junior. His childhood was similar to chess players Polgars sisters. Only tennis. I will be number one. Trained hard and after ten years of such hard training he took big dividends.

Lendl should have won more slam. His 8 slams doesn't tell the whole story of how great he was.
The story it tells is that in his era, there was a historical amount of great and legendary players which made it tough for anyone to even sniff 10 majors. While I believe that Djokovic is the greatest player of all time…he, Fed and Nadal were the only show in town for two decades. None of them would have won half the Slams they did if they played in the 70s and 80s…
@@guslevy3506 i completely disagree. Big 3 would have won double digit slams in 70's & in 80's also. Of course they wouldn't be playing that long as they are playing now but still they would win a lot.
@@rajusaha855 I grew up watching during that era and no data will prove to my own eyes that the quality of players was much deeper and better back then…the fact that a guy like Nadal who is literally a one-dimensional player could win as much as he has is a testament to that.
Give that guy a standard size racket and he would have been an NPC during the 70s and 80s when players were forced to be all around players due to the rackets and strings…

Lendl is great but he was or (everybody) is step below big 3. Big 3 able to maximize in all three categories needed to be the GOAT i.e talent, longevity & consistency with versatility which past legend never did. Players like Borg, Mcenroe, Connors, Lendl, Sampras & Agassi didn't have excelled in all three categories. Of course I didn't count Laver, Rosewall & Gonzales as they were played majority of their tennis in pre open era with different tour structure.

What an incredible match. The level got higher and higher as the match progressed. Neither player gave an inch and both were willing to do whatever it takes. The contrast in styles made strategy and tactics very clear for each player, so all they had to worry about was execution. Very entertaining.
At this time, there was a great diversity of games. Some players were baseliners, other played volley (Edberg). Some played with touch (McEnroe or Messi), others with power (Lendl). Some played 2-handed-backhands (Connors), others one-handed (Vilas). Some were more aggressive, others more patient (Borg). Today, all players seem to have the same kind of game, based only on baseline power with 2-handed backhands.
Blah, Blah, Blah. I am sure there were folks like you watching this in 1984 saying 1944 was the heyday and how Mac and Lendl couldn't win if they had to use the same racquets as Bobby Riggs and Pancho Gonzalez et al. It is really the laziest type of thinking to compare eras and that is why it is the most prevalent type of comment. Do better than the masses if you can.

Serve and Volley in Clay 😀. McEnroe is very skillful to stretch and harass Ivan like that in Clay. Great Match. Great highlights. Credit to Ivan as well - to come so far from behind. He was clutch and steady when he had to stave off those break points. I remember another gem (Agassi v Muster) in QF in the 90s. That was a great game as well. People who don't know much of.the history of tennis are quick to say roger is the most talented player ever. No sorry Johnny Mac is by far the most talented player to ever pick up a racket.

What a show! The times when hitting the ball at 220 km/h didn't pay off, and serve-and-volley ruled! Not only McEnroe, also Edberg was a master at that.

I vaguely remember watching this match on television. I was young then and just starting to find interest in tennis. Seeing the highlights today, I can only say, McEnroe had this win on his strings. He let it get away from him. Today's tennis is really different from this.

I was a big fan, so were almost all my peers that picket up tennis around 1980. He showed us that tennis is creative, beautiful and emotional. And, of course, he cursed and threw raquets even more than we already did. Our moms hated his demeanor, our dads still turned on the tv when he played.
I guess everyone has to find a valve for their emotions. Today i think, his behavior lost him some matches and was very disrespectful many times. But still like to watch his matches. Good old days. I grew up with him, as a teenage fan. And even played the dunlop 200g, which was way to heavy for a small junior, of course.

En fait , il utilise une raquette très peu tendue, et prend la balle tôt, et se doit de jouer relacher. Je pense que d'autres joueurs pourraient s'inspirer de lui, mais pour des raisons inconnues, personne ne cherche à s'en inspirer. Ca vient aussi de l'école de tennis, très académique. Je pense que sa facon de jouer serait encore efficace aujourd'"hui. Ce qui est fou d'ailleurs c'est que personne n'essaye de s'inspirer de sa facon de servir. Pour l’anecdote, je m'étais mis au badminton, venant du tennis...je jouais au départ comme je joue au tennis, me prenant des roustes en permanence contre mon partenaire de jeu...Jusqu'au jour ou je me dis que je vais jouer au badminton, en mode mc enroe...reduction de la préparation des coups, me précipitant sur le volant etc...Résultat, dés la première fois, j'ai battu mon partenaire !

They should bring back some of the iconic ones like the argyle shirts he wore in this match. Having said that, the shirts I really wish they could bring back are Mad Mac’s equally iconic Sergio Tacchini shirts that he also wore in this match…so retro cool…

J'ai vu ce match un dimanche en famille, et tout le monde détestait Lendl. Moi j'étais adolescent , mon coup droit était celui de Lendl, mon revers celui de McEnroe, et mon service de Noah. Je voulais absolument que le vilain Mozart du tennis perde, moi. Que le grincheux, le caractériel doué, se prenne une raclée face au soi disant robot sans coeur qu'était Lendl. Je défendais Lendl comme Tim Burton défend le Pingouin. Le mal aimé hué par la foule. Je me souviens bien de ce repas de famille bourgeois où tout le monde applaudissait le sale gosse américain. Et c'est vrai qu'il a dominé le match de son talent extraordinaire fait de coups de pattes de chat. Et puis, tout doucement, mon héros des pays de l'Est à tronche de vampire anorexique s'est mis à remonter la pente et puis, progressivement, à renverser le match. Quel pied, sa balle de match concrétisée, enfin cette victoire à Roland Garros tant espérée! Merci pour ce résumé plein de souvenirs proustiens émouvants, à l'échelle de l'humble 15/1 que je fus au sommet de ma gloire. Aujourd'hui, en revoyant ce match, le talent des deux joueurs saute aux yeux. Le génie, la frustration, la volonté, les oppositions de genre, tous les éléments étaient réunis pour un match de légende. Comme le tennis nous a tant offert à travers les époques (Wimbledon victoire de Nadal face à Federer) et encore aujourd'hui (AO Sinner / Medvedev).

beh questo e' abbastanza soggettivo, io capisco che puo piacere un tennis giocato cosi perchè agli inizi era cosi, ma sinceramente io preferisco quello di adesso, il modo piu efficace per fare punto è quello di tirare piu forte possibile è per questo che il tennis oggi sia tutto cosi, ma comunque per me la bellezza di questo sport è sempre la stessa, sia con uno stile di gioco piu lento e tattico che uno di potenza.

Lendl started to play deeper shots in the third set therefore McEnroe couldnt volley so easy anymore and that turned the game.Though Lendl had a continental grip that made his one handed left shot weaker than nowadays, players now should noticed the way he bent down and the steadiness it gives.I still cant understand how Mcenroe could play that unorthodox style it was so agressive like a table tennis player. Insane how Mac lost that. First two sets were absolutely god level insane. His movement and feel were on another level.
It's amazing that even on the slow clay of Paris that Mac was always looking for the opportunity to come in and volley. He came so close that day to winning but it was always going to be difficult to beat Lendl, a man who was brought up on European clay. A few weeks later Mac absolutely destroyed Jimmy Connors in the Wimbledon final, probably one of the shortest, most one sided men's finals in Wimbledon history.
The mid-80s were the last years that serve and volley was a winning strategy. With new racket technology and power hitting, only baseline players can succeed.

Quel dommage pour Mac, il aurait eu une grande satisfaction à gagner ce titre si cher à son cœur... Il a manqué d'endurance physique et a perdu confiance et s'est démotivé sur la fin... Et est tombé sur un Ivan Lendl rompu à l'exercice qui a su exploiter la faiblesse physique et mentale de Big Mac et qui a obtenu sa revanche de sa finale perdue contre Borg en 1981...
Bravo messieurs... Et bravo Yannick Noah, seul français de l'ère Open et joueur au type de jeu serve and volley à avoir gagné ce tournoi un an auparavant...
