RIP to my dad, 08/12/24, who used to calm me to sleep by playing the VHS recording of this song he took from the show. At two in ‘97, little me fought off sleep while the whole of this recording played, and bare in mind there was no fast forward, so I had to sit through the first minutes of Rosie doing her thing before we got to the actual song, which never failed to put me to sleep… love you D.
I sang Natalie’s version of this every single night to my daughter when she was a fresh baby until her pre-teen years when she preferred back rubs to singing. So much love for you Natalie!
This song captures the beauty and romance of the bygone era of airship travel. I think we all share a sense of nostalgia for a time that we never got to be a part of...
April 27th, 1997 is the day I started singing this song and 3 lovies later it was going strong!!! Cant wait for the opportunity to sing it again. Thank you Natalie!!!
I absolutely love this song and Natalie. My husband found a recording in which children do sing in the final verse. It’s so sweet. My 3 year ( at the time) old grandson loved singing this with me.
And a kind of muffled astronaut man singing too? That’s the version my dad and I danced to when I was a little girl & our dance at my wedding. He’s been gone almost 6 years and I sing this to my daughter every night too. This song is so special for us ❤
Natalie has always had class. She probably could’ve been a bigger star if she’d been willing to flaunt it. You didn’t see her in the tabloids but doing some songs for charity like this instead.

Me too. All four of my kids. The youngest two are six & seven. When they are tired or sick it’s “Sing the Airship song, Mama.”
My grandmother would sing it to my mom then to me and now I sing it to my daughter ❤

This was on the Pediatric Aids CD, this and Natalie Cole's "Both Sides Now" are my favorites from that Cd

I love this song!
Simply charming.
Sooooooo sweet!
I had good taste for a 15-year-old. Geez. I'm so glad this is what was influencing me in my formative years.

Who are the other musicians performing with Natalie Merchant and Jay Ungar?
Molly Mason on guitar.
Thank you Kathryn Webster.
Jay Ungar on fiddle?
...and in her own inimitable way, Natalie Merchant invents steampunk.
Lol
Building on John Hartford
I believe this song was written in 1904.
