Fractal Cane Ideas in Polymer Clay

  • I have long been inspired by images of fractal art online. In this video I make polymer clay canes, purely based on my love of these images, (but ones which are neither mathematically or scientifically correct in terms of creating a fractal 😉 ). This is a long video, broken down into sections, detailed below, so you can skip to whichever part interests you the most. I hope you enjoy it, and it inspires you to have a go at some of the cane ideas I suggest. So, sit back, relax, and watch as I create my own interpretation of fractal art in polymer clay canes.
    Video Elements and timings:
    • Equipment Needed - 4.10 mins
    • Base Cane - 8.50 mins
    • Turning the Base Cane into a fractal cane - 25.40 mins
    • Creating a Pendant -33.45 mins
    • Using a Skinner Blend in a fractal cane -46.35 mins
    • Square reduction into a fractal cane - 50.50 mins
    • Turning any cane into a fractal cane -54.05 mins
    • Other options with the Base Cane - 59.15 mins

    Here is the link to creating Skinner Blends - • Basic Skinner Blend Tu...
    Here is the link to the Circuit Cane, the veneer is created at 38.40 mins - • Circuit Cane in Polyme...
    For reducing a large cane, look at the Victorian Tile video, and go to 30.30 mins - • Victorian Tile Jewelle...
    The Bail Templates are from PCUK Tools and they have a website here - www.pcuktools.... and an Etsy shop here - www.etsy.com/s...
    The small glass crystals, called Chatons, are available from jewellery making / bead shops and online. I get mine in the UK from Spellbound Beads - www.spellbound...
    An example of a stainless steel soap can be found here - www.amazon.co....

    You can buy the semi-sphere moulds in stores and on line, they are often found in cookware departments, and bath bomb moulds (not plastic ones) are often good to use too.
    Sculpey have a hollow bead maker which is available from many outlets - Sculpey® Hollow Bead Maker | Sculpey.com .
    If you cannot find or do not want to purchase these moulds, then you can use an old fashioned round topped spent lightbulb instead. Put a little scrap clay at the bottom to hold it upright and use the top of the spent lightbulb as your rounded mould. As an alternative, you can carefully cut off the bottom end of a used drinks can, and carefully masking the sharp, cut edges, use either the inside or the outside as a gently domed mould, (if there is printing on the bottom, sand it off first). Finally, if you have none of these, then a nice, rounded spoon can act as a good mould.
    If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-s... and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
    I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/u... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.t...

    It's so amazing how literally 1 design pushed and pulled in different ways makes so many beautiful patterns!! Absolutely stunning work! Thank you for doing so much hard work for all of us to enjoy!! I know I'm not the only one who could literally watch you all day!!! I am really looking forward to the bowl tutorial! 💜💜

      Awww bless you, that is so kind of you to say, and of course it is why I do them in the first place. I can't physically get to others, so this way I can still reach out to anyone anywhere - gotta love the internet :)

    Fiona, you say you aren't a scientist or mathematician but you really gave us some science here with this master class on cane manipulation. Thank you, Professor Abel-Smith for sharing these wonderful techniques and helping us expand our concepts of polymer clay design.

    That. Was. Stunning. As you are so good at, you broke down an extremely complex looking pattern into something that most of us are capable of doing, if we take the time. Thank you! I watched in awe as it unfolded into more and more beauty... then my jaw literally dropped when you showed your bowls. Thank you SO much for your generous sharing of tutorials!

    Golly! What a lot of work you did on this one for us!! Thank you! Some of those patterns are just amazingly unexpected based on how they started out! That last batch and the 2 pendants you made from it might just be my favorites! As always, relaxing and inspiring at the same time!!

    This is so exciting! Such amazing results for all the variations of the cane. I have often thought that you must have a very mathematical mind - I don't think you could come up with your patterns and figure out the amounts of clay to use without one. I would love to try this effect using stacked skinner blends for the swirl. then adding the dots around it. m Thank you once again for such a wonderful tutorial, The bowls are absolutely gorgeous!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much Caroline :) I did try it with a Skinner Blend, thinking that would be easier, but as I was trying to re-create the same design, trying to push the Skinner Blends into the spiral proved too difficult, and it was actually easier to do as the separate colours. As to mathematical, my Maths teacher would definitely disagree ;) but I do love patterns, and I now see patterns where probably others see Maths. Have fun with your experimenting :)

      @@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals Fiona - thank you for your reply. One other thing you say is that you are impatient. The fractal cane belies that statement. Designing it, mixing the colors, conditioning that huge amount of clay, putting it all together and then reducing it? Not for an impatient person, although I can see that getting to the end of a cane is exciting and the desire to slice it right off the bat is high. Fortunately, with Fimo, it is not such a big thing. But with Premo I end up putting the cane in the freezer. Thanks again.

    Wow that was an amazing process! So much clay! Do you sell your leftover canes and creations to help purchase more clay? Here where I live in Tennessee, we've been having an extreme shortage of premo clay in the hobby stores. I hate having to order it because I generally have to pay full price verses getting to buy it 30% off every other week at Hobby lobby.

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  3 роки тому +2

      I know, clay is getting short everywhere :( I do sell my works and that helps keep the pennies running in, just enough to keep me in more clay ;) I hope your stock situation improves soon :)
