- Polymer Clay truly is a magical medium, just little changes in how you put a cane together give a whole different look. In this full tutorial I talk you through the whole process step by step through two designs using the same initial cane parts, with tips and techniques throughout, so you really can make your own. So, sit back, relax, and watch the process unfold.
The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny available from the UA-cam Free Audio Library.

Stainless Steel Bowls can be bought from Ikea, sometimes Lidl, or online. Heave a search for what’s available near you.
The Slump moulds (pottery forms) I mention are available in the USA - grpotteryforms... search their site for pottery forms, and the UK - www.potclays.c... again, search under pottery forms. Do check they are oven safe before you use them.
Polymer Clay is oven baked, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the brand of clay you are using. I always tent the polymer clay in aluminium foil, to protect the clay should the oven temperature spike during the baking process.
The amounts and colours of clay I use are listed within the video itself, I used FIMO Soft, but all recognised brands of polymer clay will work well for this project.
I used a Pasta Machine dedicated to Polymer Clay use to create blends/thin sheets and condition the clay. My Pasta Machine is an Atlas 180, and it has setting 0 as its thickest and 9 as its thinnest. There is a standard way of calculating the thickness of clay required, by using stacked playing cards. On my machine the thickness are as follows: Setting 0 = 8 playing cards, setting 1 = 7, setting 2 = 6, setting 3 = 5, setting 4 = 4, setting 5 = 3, setting 6 and 7 = 2, setting 8 and 9 = 1 card.

Oh, Fiona!! What a great idea! Thanks so much. You made it look simple.
I am so glad you like it, and if you follow thorugh slowly, step by step it is relatively simple, thank you 🙂
Oh my goodness I think I have never seen such detail and such precise amazing work such as yours! You must be a Maths teacher and love geometry.. This is the first video for you to me to watch but I tell you got me hooked on this beauty. 😍😍
Oh fantastic, and no, I wasn't a great maths fan, but I love shapes and patterns, if they did that solely as a subject I would have been very happy in school 😉😂🤣Thanks so much 🙂
Fiona, I really enjoyed this one. The patterns are really beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. I can't wait until the next one!
I am so glad you enjoyed it, thanks so much 🙂
Bless you Fiona! ❤ What a lot of work we made for you when we asked for both versions of this lovely trinket bowl! Thank you! I know what I'll be doing when I've sorted out my workroom! XxxX
Fantastic, I hope it's going well Liz and you get a chance to play soon 🙂
Thank you again. Terrific & prolific artist who is also a great teacher. I am fortunate to have such talented teachers on the UA-cam with my entire experience coming from UA-cam. I did make a panel today from a cane & worked on Japanese apple blossoms.
Thank you so much, and wow, that sounds amazing and like you are having huge fun with your Polymer Clay 🙂
I love this tutorial. I have struggled with getting the shapes right. This will much improve my work.
Wonderful, thanks so much Kris 🙂
You are so good to us; to give us both versions of this cane! And all with your wonderful instruction and commentary! Thank you, a million times thank you!
You are very welcome, thanks so much Wendy 🙂
Your generously is boundless! This is gorgeous and your instructions are detailed but make it seem very doable. I will say you must have the strongest hands ever! Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
🤣😂 Yes they are quite strong I think with all the clay work, but I also do have arthritus which I think the constant use helps with a bit, I hope so anyway 😉 Thank you very much for your lovely comment 🙂
Fiona, I love all your videos! I was wondering since some of your older videos have clay colors that the clay companies don't make anymore, can you make a new video on peacock petal cane? I'm just starting and it would be lovely to get ideas of colors to use than make a boo boo and waste a lot of clay.
Thank you, I am so glad you are enjoying them. Yes, It is frustrating when FIMO switch around their colours so often, and no, sadly I don't have time to redo video's, I have enough problems at the moment finding time to do new ones 😂🤣But here's a link to a handy mixing chart that FIMO do, which should make finding the colour you want to use easier - I hope it helps, thanks so much and have fun with your clay - buyfimo.net/how-to-mix-fimo/ 🙂
Fiona - this was an absolutely beautiful video - so thorough and incredible to watch - stunning dish :) xxx
aww, thank you very much Claire, that is so sweet of you 🙂
Wow! These are so beautiful! You are so talented at picking colors to go together. I knit and am always looking for inspiration because choosing colors isn't my strong suit. The tray with the greens with the peach, gold and bronze has to be my favorite! Definitely a color palette I will keep in mind ❣️
Wonderful, yes I like that one too, so will be using it in other pieces,😉 thanks so much 🙂
This is absolutely brilliant! It's very beautiful and simple all in one! Thank you so very much❤ I'm making this! 😊
Wonderful, have fun, thanks so much 🙂
Fiona, these are absolutely beautiful! You are the Queen of Kaleidoscopes! ❤😊

Love the blue shades
Wonderful, thanks so much 🙂
Absolutely loved this tutorial! Thank you for sharing all these tips!
I am so happy to hear that, thanks so much Briana 🙂
Excellent video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to explain and give all your tips. 👏👏 👍🇦🇺 the only thing I missed was if I will put the dish in a conventional oven? And at what temperature and for how long. Please let me know
Thanks so much, and yes, I do cover the baking process within the video, I recommend tenting your bowl/tile it sits on, in foil, to protect your piece should the oven spike in temperature, and baking/curing it according to the manufacturer's instructions for the brand of clay you are using (as brands can differ slightly). It is a conventional oven. 🙂
This is so beautiful!!! ❤
Question: is polymer clay safe for food ? Maybe for a little salad bowl ?
Thanks so much. Once it is baked it is an inert substance, however, it is quite easy to mark, carve into or cut into polymer clay even after it is baked, so I wouldn't recommend any food use, as you don't want little bits of the clay being caught up in food at all. 😉🙃🙂
Beautiful! Fascinating to watch you clay!
I am so happy you enjoyed it, thank you very much 🙂
I can’t wait to try this!
Wonderful, thanks so much 🙂
So beautiful!
Thank you very much 🙂
Such a great idea and such a great artist. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome, thank you so much 🙂
Amazing!
Thank you so much Carolyn 🙂
Beautiful!! Where do you get a burnishing stone from?
Thanks so much, it is a Stainless Steel Soap, and is widely available from Supermarkets/online shops - they are used to take away garlic smells from your hands if you have been cooking with garlic 😉🙂
Wow awesome. Magic
Great, thanks so much 🙂
This is a wonderful tutorial! What is the size of the slump mound that you used?
Thank you so much, it is approx 5 inches / 12.5 cm across 🙂
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals thank you so much for your quick response!
@@myartfulgifts You're welcome 🙂
❤❤❤
Thanks so much 🙂
I did my own pattern using your general rules & some canes i had made earlier. I did make up 3 patterns to see. I will either cut more slices or do entirely different one from remaining unreduced cane making 120 slices & finish this one as a practice. ua-cam.com/video/yzKXqsXxnb4/v-deo.htmlsi=3So5ggy0oCOBLbVh (my kaleidoscope attempt before finishing up)
Looking great, thanks for the link 🙂
