He was dead sober. He is highly intelligent and massivly well-educated with a first-class memory. No drunk could handle random choices from the audience like that. He is also a top-class comic.

Well, he was wrong about the creation of Belgium. After Waterloo there was a conference in Vienna in 1815 concerning the post-Napoleon future of Europe. The bufferzone idea indeed is true, they didn't want either France or Germany to control Europe but they didn't do that by magically creating Belgium. It was the opposite, they gave back former Belgian and Luxembourg territory back to the Netherlands, so that it could indeed be that buffer.
The Belgians indeed did not like that much and revolted in 1830 and then became an independent state, but not because the UK wanted it; the UK and others saw to it in 1815 that Belgian wasn't founded and gave the land to the Dutch. Belgian became a country 15 years later exactly as a result opposed to that decision. Sorry Al.
Another fib. Burkina Faso, former Opper Volta, was never either German or Britisch, it was French until its independence.
Uganda was British but not because of some former German occupation, given to the Brits through the Versailles treaty. In 1885 already it was given to the Brits at a colonial conference in Berlin.

I was a pub chef for years and had a landlord like that with the "never ending pint". When the evening rush started to die about 8pm he would pull himself a real ale. And just repeatedly top it up whenever he got down to about a quarter. So he only dirtied one glass but by 11pm the geezer was always about 15 pints deep. And we'd walk out after a 12 hour shift doing nearly 500 covers and he'd make us pay full whack for our beers lmao. What a cunt 😂

And no he's not a drunk. It may even be no-alcohol beer... do you think anyone would take the chance of ruining a show because he'd have 'one too many'? It could be a shandy (half beer, half lemonade) anyway as he always does(on purpose) he spills quite a lot.
He's being what is thought to be a typical old-fashioned know it all pub Landlord... they always stood around with a drink whilst chatting with customers... not like the corporate-run 'pubs' now, with managers who are ambassadors for the company. They did have a charm and were characters in their own right. Not so now, very few and far between.
In reality he isn't a loud-mouthed know it all. He is an extremely intelligent, well educated (Oxford University graduate) well versed in British culture, politics, World history and current events... oh, and a know-it-all ha ha ha.
He ( as part joke and to prove a point) ran for Gov't/ to be an MP. as his character The Pub Landlord... The Guvnor as he's known too. He got 318 votes.

The drink is part of the act - thats why his alter ego is 'the pub landlord'. He is insanely quick witted and intelligent, but I have seen him a little drunk in his local in chiswick 🤣

The person you see on stage is a character called the Pub landlord. That's why he has a bar on the stage, he serves himself during the show. He playes on being a little drunk as it goes on behaves a little dirty when he see's an attractive woman, but always in courage joining in but he controls the crowd well. X great comedian 👌

I remember seeing him as a warm up guest comedian before he was famous. The guy is absolutely amazing at sound fx. It was a spot on sketch prob from 90s.

It's hard to fake a head on a pint. In other videos of live performances he's also drinking brown beers i.e. bitter. Which is traditional, proper British beer, as seen in war movies during WW2 with RAF pilots drinking in the pub from tankards - dark, not clear.

That’s the best description of him I’ve seen. I think he’s very good but I don’t think he is fully understood even here in the uk sometimes. I’ve see him live a few times all brilliant.

Al Murray is a very clever guy his specialism is History. Here in his persona of the pub landlord he is usually drinking while delivering his excellent comedy. Look out his other stuff I am sure you will like it.
He doesn't drink anything. Its alcohol free , how can he perform if he is pissed. This is an educated man and a total professional, you see the actor before you. Slash from Guns and Roses was always drinking his Jack Daniels on stage he laughingly admitted it just cold black tea, he said how do you think I can play with two bottles of bourbon inside me?

What a lot of people DON'T realise about Al Murray is that he is IN FACT a fully-qualified Pub Landlord, with an Advanced Certificate in Landlording Studies from Watney University - and is only PLAYING the part of an Oxford History graduate doing a stand-up routine.............as a pub landlord. Hence, for example, his ability to pull a pint whilst pretending to deliver a history lesson. Brilliance such as this is rare (and non-existent, of course, in the USA).

Although, like everyone said, Al Murray is a genuinely smart guy, he did make one glaring mistake: Burkina Faso was never a German colony. It was a French colony.
You might enjoy "Yes Minister" & "Yes Prime Minister". Very sharp, very intelligent comedy about the nature of governments. Not right or left, it is what "The West Wing" and "Veep" could only aspire to dreaming of being.

He studied Modern History at an Oxford University. He does a superb WW2 podcast with historian James Holland called ‘We Have Ways of Making You Talk’ - I have learned a great deal about WW2 since listening to that.
You do realise Al Murray graduated University of Oxford, where he read modern history, a lot of the famous British comedians graduated prestigious universities. John Cleese is a Cambridge graduate with a law degree. So many English comedians are highly educated people.

You should watch his programme entitled 'Why does everyone hate the British.'. Take a look at Micky Flanagan especially the 'out out tour'. Particularly the part where he talks about his time in New York lol. Catherine Tate is an excellent comedian to watch. Very very funny.

The greatest thing about Al Murray is not his knowledge of history, its his knowledge of the future. He identified the coming of western nationalism (aka Brexiteering or Trumpism) 20 years before it happened and created a fictional character around it called The Pub Landlord. The beer he drinks is non alcohol but he drinks it to create the illusion of a low educated, working class, right winger who screams patriotic rhetoric but lacks the intelligence to comprehend what he’s saying. Not saying all Brexit/Trump supporters are like this but the character is a perfect representation of the stereotype
