    True story ... when I was 20, I found out my older brother was illiterate. He was several years older and had moved out of home quite early on, so for some reason, this fact about his inability to read or write had totally passed me by. He worked for several years as a skilled sign writer. He was very artistic and would simply match up the shapes of the letters and words he was given, with his boss spell checking them for him before he created the signs.

    In answer to your question, the term "first world war" was first used in September 1914 by German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel, who claimed that "there is no doubt that the course and character of the feared 'European War' ... will become the first world war in the full sense of the word".

    • @markjones127
      @markjones127 Місяць тому +5

      I just posted the answer given on the show which was 1918, it would be great to see David Mitchell go back on the show and tell them they were wrong! 🤣

    • @mrab4222
      @mrab4222 Місяць тому +6

      Exactly. It's the difference between _First_ (rather than Second) World War and First _World_ (rather than local) War.

    • @chardywork
      @chardywork Місяць тому +10

      I'm going to be pedantic and point out that *describing* it as 'the first world war [...]' isn't the same as *naming* it The First World War.

    • @markjones127
      @markjones127 Місяць тому +1

      @@chardywork Interesting point, food for thought.... ok so now I think the show was right! Would make for a great argument on the show too!!! 🤣

    • @JBW27
      @JBW27 Місяць тому +2

      @@chardywork I'll be pedantic in return then 😉😂 The question at hand is "When was the First World War named as such". Oxford Languages, the world’s leading dictionary publisher, gives multiple definitions of "named", including the following:
      'give a particular title or epithet to'.
      Given this, I would argue that Ernst, in saying the war "will become the first world war in the full sense of the word", is bestowing that title upon the Great War, as it then was. As such, it can therefore be said that it was first named as such in September 1914. Of course, the answer on the show was 1918, I believe, but in any event it didn't become popularised in any sense of the word until 1939.
      In a similarly pedantic manner, I would also argue that describing and naming are, within a certain context, exactly the same thing. By naming something, you are describing it, but with one or more commonly understood and agreed upon words. For example, if one says 'Water' and 'Ice', these two words simultaneously name two things, and describe, to at least some extent, their condition of being by the use of a single word, so that everyone who encounters the word knows precisely what the other person or people are talking about. It's like a shorthand description.

    I was lucky enough to be in the studio for the recording of the episode where they were asked how many brains the man with two brains had.
    We laughed so hard throughout the whole recording- it was 2 hours start to finish with only a 30 second break partway through while they did something technical. Heaven knows how they ever cut it down to even the 45 minute QiXL broadcast, let alone the main broadcast which is 30 minutes long!

    The answer given in the show was 1918, a British officer called Lieutenant Colonel Charles à Court Repington met with a Major Johnson from Harvard University to decide what the official name of the war should be, he gives a full account of the different names they suggested and why in his diary, and they both finally agreed on calling it The First World War

    Okay, if you are curious enough to watch a full episode, Boomer, Quite Interesting is a show where the questions are so obscure, with the answers so unlikely, that the only way to get points is to either be right or to be quite interesting about the subject.
    There’s two notable features: the klaxon goes off when they give the wrong, usually accepted, answer where they then lose points, and the teacher/student comedy class difference between the educated Stephen Fry and the ill-informed Alan Davies.
    It’s fun and educational. Even if you see one episode you’ll go away more clever than when you started. 😊

    We had a Cafe in my home town many years ago where the owner was rude to customers, first time I walked in he said "What do you want you wanker" ?
    Some old woman sat nearby asked for a cuppa and he shouts out to the kitchen staff "Cup of tea for the virgin on the top table".

    Gotta love his rants - you may enjoy more of his 'soapbox' series of short ones. (Note that as mammals, we're expected to drink milk and bread has been the staple food of western civilisation for thousands of years so clearly its fine. The reason why its 'suddenly' bad is that over the past few decades more dubious additives, perservatives, flavourings and other dubious chemicals have been introduced to that make it less healthy - hence why people who can obtain the real deal, like in much of the European mainland, tend to be perfectly healthy eating loads. US bread actually has material from yoga mats in it which is banned in most countries, similarly chemicals added to your milk over there tend to be outlawed everywhere else.)

    Mitchell does give good rant. :D
    I've had to use sign writers many times, over the years. What David saying, in jest, is actually true. You get two options. 1) They use the exact version of what they're given. If they corrected the spelling and it wasn't how they wanted it, then they'd have to redo it for free. 2) You pay extra for proofreading. They make the spelling and the grammar correct and if it's wrong, then they would have to make good on their errors.

    A bit of context for the last one there. The way the game works is that you think there's an obvious answer to the question, but it's normally a common fallacy. Like Q. Who discovered America A. Christopher Columbus which is wrong but is a common misconception. (I was taught in school that is was, but we now know Leif Erikson A Norse explorer was there 500 years before)
    So when the question of the two brains came up Alan was very hesitant to say 2 & as David perfectly put it, feels like bully tactics
    The aim is to avoid the claxon (Big writing on the screen & alarm) as that takes away lots of points. If you answer the questions or contribute something "Quite Interesting" then you'll get a point or two. If you get 0 or above you've played well! Though most scores are well in the negative figures xD

    I think if you come to the UK, just don't expect American customer service!

    Can't remember the answer to the first world war question but it was something to do with the fact that the first 'world war' was considered to be the Napoleonic wars, so it was sometime closer to when WWI occurred. Someone in the comments of the video says 1920 is when it was probably first used.
    Oh an it goes without saying, one of the best QI clips is the question "What do they say about the necropolis...?". You might find it under 'Poking Fun at Stephen'.

    I remember this episode and can’t fully remember the answer to when WWI was called WWI but I believe it started off being called the Great War and was generally known as that by the general public until close to 1939. However military historians, soon after 1918, started calling it the First World War because it was the first war fought on so many fronts. Apparently there were book titles including “first world war” published in the 1920s and 30s. Although there is an argument to be made that the First World War was that fought between Britain and France in the 1750s. Named the Seven Years War, it was fought in North America, Caribbean, Europe, Africa and the Far East.

    Didn’t see the show but I’m guessing it was not named because it was the first of 2 World Wars but because it was the first ever World War as oppose to wars between 2 nations

    If you wanna get the same kinda vibe as QI without the intimidating presence of Stephen Fry, I'd recommend "Lateral With Tom Scott", which is strictly speaking a podcast, but they post video clips of individual questions on UA-cam.
    Basically Tom and each guest bring along some obscure lateral-thinking problems and the others work together to try and solve it.
    It's quite like QI in terms of the kinds of questions and atmosphere and fun trivia to be learned, with the twist of host Tom not having a monopoly on looking like the smart guy with all the answers (looking unbelievably clever is much easier if, like Stephen, you're the one asking all the questions).
    And Tom's guests are usually other youtubers and podcasters, so you could probably be on it yourself if you asked Tom nicely :P

    My nickname at college was “peep show” because my voice sounds like David and I’m extremely pedantic. I had never seen peep show before I got the name, needless to say I had to call it fair game
