The Top 5 Poses Lotus Pose Mobility - Learn to Sit in Padmasana Full Lotus | Yoga With Tim

  • Learn to open your hips safely (without damaging your knees) and effectively to progress to full lotus pose while creating mobility and flexibility for seated poses.
This is the most desirable pose for pranayama and meditation due to the downward pressure of the feet against the thigh helps to upright the sacrum/low back to better upright and nourish the spine. Energetically this action is stimulating for the root and pelvic chakras and can be argued to awaken energy through the sushumna nadi (central channel).
Due to the lift and energy through the spine, the lungs can expand fully with less strain and prana is fully expressed through the body.

I am a male at 74 who had a sedentary job and got lotus rather quickly 4 years ago even though balance poses and straight leg forward folds are still problematic. My "trick" was to find a cross-legged pose where both knees were beginning to touch the floor. I didn't realize that most people can't cross their legs at all with knees very very low.
My journey I had gone to an intro class, and the instructor was sitting in half lotus when I arrived, and I said to my self I can do this and 4 seconds later I did it. After this I went home and found a UA-cam instruction that I could follow and 3 weeks later I could do left leg then right leg, and 5 weeks more I could do right leg then left leg. After I started a regular practice 20 months ago, my instructor said I had flexible hips, but stiff legs. The reason is that I race walk (33 years), and we practiced rotating our hips to get a longer stride length, which is useful if you want to win races. I can also do pigeon forward folding all the way down pretty easy.
Since sun salutations are awkward for me, having some small competency keeps me going to yoga class. I always do a lotus pose at the end of class even if no one else does. I find once in lotus, I do not want to come out, and it is better to try to get the pose tight as after a minute or two it will feel better.

I'm 81 but I still want to arrive (gently of course) at a more flexible situation. My instructor here in Rome said that with a body "così duro", it would be difficult to reach this goal. You inspire me think not in terms of pull, haul and jerk but ease hips etc. into flexibility.

I was pleased that you addressed yourself to problems I had brought up. There is an irony in my situation, no fault of yours - I'm waiting now for a surgical operation to replace my left hip joint, unable at the moment even to pick something off the ground. The culprit, in my case, was not dealing with scogliosis, keeping weight on my left side, and wearing down the hip joint. Post operative prognosis, even for this 83-year-old, however, is very good and, in the years left, I'll patiently try to gain mobility, following your advice. My own prognosis is good, in fact, because I have pursued teaching such as yours, improving my overall condition.

    • @yogawithtim

That's a sign that you're going a little too deep into the pose too soon. It might take time and patience. Try backing off on the stretch and relaxing more instead of forcing it into the joint. For yoga stretches, you want to experience the sensation in the "belly" of the muscles instead of at its connection.

The excellent therapist (provided by the Region (=State)) will certainly not let me attempt things like lotus positions. Furthermore, a person in my situation has to wait at least 6 months to consolidate healing, and dislocations that result from violation of the prescriptions, lead to lots of trouble. Fortunately, the therapist has practiced yoga.

@@yogawithtim I did... I've had knee issues for many years so I just can't get my legs in the right position without hurting my knees. I'll keep practicing, but I'm not very hopeful that I'll be able to do it. My offer still stands though 😄

Hello Dave. You can find yoga blocks at Amazon.com, Target, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and even Kohl's. Just Google 'yoga block' and see what comes up near you. :)
