Sophie Scholl Interrogation

- A scene from the film, "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days". If you haven't seen the movie yet, I highly recommend it. Sophie Scholl, alongside her brother Hans, is a German student at the University of Munich who stands up against the Nazi regime.
She is caught for distributing Anti-Nazi leaflets and this clip is just one of the many interrogations throughout the film. - Розваги
She is a real hero and must be honored for her faith and refusal to compromise, she knew what was right in her heart.
"Why do you risk so much for false ideas?
Because of my conscience"
She died without negotiating her moral values, decency , and higher standard of conviction and restless conscience. I will remember her name for the rest of my life. What shame she was only 21 years old. Don't forget her brother Hans Scholl and friend Christoph Probst and the other four who were executed.
This is an absolutely riveting scene.
She's martyr God Bless her and the whole white rose society
We live in a similar time right now. Sophie rests among the blessed.
We sure do, unfortunately.
Don't worry, the orange cult leader will go to prison, he will lose, just like hitler did, democracy will prevail, no white supremacist will turn America into an autocracy.
Her name will live forever! What a brave and wonderful girl she was. May the world never forget Sophie Scholl!
Rare for one so young to have her thoughts so crystallized--and, by the way, accurate. The ideology of The White Rose is correct on every level--political, spiritual (metaphysical as the 4th leaflet brilliantly extrapolates), and personal--inspiration sprung from her father and brother
There's a very important part missing there: The interrogator, once he goes out of the scene, heads for a tap that was just 1 or 2 metres away, and washes his hands.
It can be a symbolic meaning of "I wash my hands as I tried to save you but you didn't accept my help", just like that Roman emperor did with Jesus.
+pix046
I guess... yeah.
The thing is, he didn't wash his hands for her brother or the other one.
that's exactly what it means
such a brave girl, reminds me of another german called John Rabe.mahatma gandhi said the weak can never forgive, forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
The transformation of Robert Mohr throughout the movie was interesting. In the beginning a Gestapo hardliner loyal to the core keen on upholding the stability and laws of The Third Reich. Yet as time progress, he slowly starts to doubt the system and it's values.
Most memorably is towards the ending, the exchange between Sophia and Robert.
"I just said goodbye to my parents, even you must understand that" - Robert not saying a word, only a slight nodding while trying to avoid eye contact, filled with shame. He knew he couldn't save his son from the carnage being the eastern front, but he tried to save Sophie from the execution squads.
I can't help feeling sorrow for Robert Mohr.
If you noticed he never answered her question regarding Germany winning. He talks about his son, but never answers. He understood her arguments and probably agreed with some of them.
Such obviousness might be why it didn't win an Academy Award. Also that she spun Mohr's head around is so cliche -- as if he didn't have his own mind, and hadn't heard all the arguments before already. Could have been lots of subtlety, like the woman who gains her confidence could have been police herself. Or Mohr could have got her to confess by saying her brother confessed and then revealing by his questions that he didn't confess. Typical police work!
But if records or minutes of the interrogations or trial exist, I would hope they would be followed exactly. Reality is always so much better than what screenwriters can think up.
The real Mohr was less compationnate
Philip Schmidt
He was a nazi loyal to the freak hitler
One of the interrogators actually smuggled their leaflets out of Germany.
I read that the executioner said Sophie was the bravest person he's ever met in his life.
Think of this everytime someone says "But its the law"
@Avy Anonymous: Hmm... Brainwave, heartbeat, human DNA = living human in a courtroom. DNA is not the same as the mother or father, thus a separate person.
Your contrary science is... ?
It's so amazing that people even when faced with life and death are strong enough to stand for what they believe in. WWII was a very dark period in modern history, and it saddens me to know the depths of evil that people can perpetuate, and convince themselves it is right.
It is interesting to note that William Shirer, while acknowledging the incredible bravery of these students, thought that it was one of a number of examples that displayed indirectly how naive and insulated many of the German upper middle class were from the severe brutality of a regime they thought they understood the limits of. A number of upper class Germans , acting in small groups or salons gathered together often somewhat brazenly, to discuss the war, the regime and what might be done to exert political resistance. This sort of activity picked up significantly in 1943 after Stalingrad. Most were quickly infiltrated by the gestapo and their members either executed or sent to concentration camps.
The freedom she advocates is the same freedom Jesus did--advocating for the dignity of every human being
@Jay Blair true..since jesus wasn't real.
Smokey Robinson you need to turn back to god before its to late
@daFattylover It's not because she's a woman, it's because of her attitude during these interrogations and her process. She was the last who confessed of the arrested and tried to take all the guilt to herself to protect her brother, the others and Christoph Probst, who was a father. It's right, Sophie made lowest effort in the white rose, but she didn't even try to pretend to be innocent or not involved when she was arrested, but was willing to die. I admire her. Btw: I'm german.
thank you for this!
you can tell in 7:30 that robert mohr was trying to save her from the guillotine knowing how gifted and smart she was
The Nazi interrogator gave her more time to state her position than the cacklers on "The View" would give anyone who doesn't spout the party line.
@WehrmachtFeldwebel Sadly the real lame hippies hide behind a computer screen. Many of us, knowing the consequences, wouldn't have the guts to do what Miss Scholl, her Brother and assistants did. May they R.I.P.
No way. They threaten me with a freaking guillotine I'll never put a toe out of line.
You're wrong when you say "many" of us wouldn't have had the guts to do what she did, Tricia. What you should have said is that very, very few of us would've had the guts to do it, and very possibly none of us.
"Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon." - Walter Joseph Kovacs
Doing what you believe is right regardless of personal circumstances is what it means to be human.
Ich bin sehr traurig darüber, dass ich das Glück habe, jetzt geboren zu sein, weil meine Schwester und mein Bruder nicht weggebracht wurden, um zu sterben
The interrogation scene is based off of the transcripts kept by the gestapo. We can never actually know what went on inside the interrogation room, but we can guess.
The Gestapo man reminds me of Jim Kerr from Simple Minds! Fantastic film. Has stayed with me ever since I saw it.
Also--anyone who would attempt to reduce Sophie and Hans actions to some sort of secular moral fortitude must needs be ignoring the 4th leaflet which explains most poignantly the spiritual struggle that existed--Hitler was truly a soldier of the Evil One and The White Rose recognized that without the power of the "True God" that all would be defenseless--thus their struggle was through and through a spiritual one and they died because they refused to give up their position as creatures from God and of God-- the movie does an excellent job showing the strength and conviction of Sophie's faith--religion was most important to her and drove her political spirit
Of couse, it makes sense, but only if you're Christian
I think a lot of atheists would share Sophie's views about conscience, decency and freedom.
pix046 That is for sure
They would, but of course also have no immutable and absolute basis for those views.
OUTSTANDING movie !
AMAZING scene!
It is interesting to note that William Shirer, while acknowledging the incredible bravery of this handful of students, did use it as an example of how insulated from reality
'So, did she get the part?
Every life is precious.
Brave girl indeed, she would not fare well in a modern day collage, with her"period" mind frame. She would be on the spot again, fighting another mob of goons.
@AngelBiLove I'm sorry, please explain your comment. To me it would appear that you're implying that "creationists" originated in America? That can't possibly be what you mean...
And the other 12 students who were sentenced to one year of forced labor.
Such an amzing movie and the actor who plays Sophie, is so good. The is a "must see" movie!
How can you change the world? With my Heart and Soul,
let Liberty Ring throught the world!
She has to be the best woman ever in Germany.
@anebt wow. great quote. thanks for sharing.
Hm that's definitely an interesting observation. Translation is obviously a difficult thing, especially since transliterating each individual word would sound very awkward in English. I think growth certainly results in wisdom, so the translation makes sense to me. But you're right, they don't fully express the original German emphasizing a sense of silent growth.
The new film will be based not just on Anne Frank's famous diary but on extensive historical documentation from the family. It aims to tell Frank's whole story, both before and after her time in hiding.
+Shah Anwar Proof?
Sophie and Anne were the most tragic story I read in WWII
I think in this movie he genuinely cared about her and wanted her to give up on her ideas in order to save herself.
best scene in the movie!
@CaRZndHipP0z glad to hear it helped!
I haven't seen the full film and this is a very riveting and powerful scene. Was she caught in the act of handing out flyers? I am surprised the interrogation got philosophical. I assume they would have just interrogated (tortured) her to get more information about other "conspirators." Her execution is a foregone conclusion and they don't want to hear her rationale. People in Nazi Germany were killed almost on the spot for doing less. She can't say anything that will prevent her death. Maybe they would have liked her to admit what she did was wrong but then still execute her?
Je ne vois pas comment les condamnateurs ont pu vivre ou aurait pu vivre convenablement en se souvenant de cela… Ca doit être horrible, c'est pourquoi :" ne faite jamais rien contre votre conscience même si l'état vous le demande."
I'd rather not say how I know this but after watching this film, I was deeply disturbed to recall that the way this woman was interrogated in the film was terribly similar to the way American cops now treat anyone and everyone they bring in for even the most minor violation. It would seem that in a totalitarian country, everyone is guilty. There is no innocence to prove.
I fact because the Nazis/Germans were such meticulous record keepers that we know so much about things like this because of them. A classic example is the "Wannsee Conference". In this case the interrogator was a Gestapo officer named Robert Mohr and as noted copious notes were taken of the interrogation.
I seriously wonder whether this interrogator, long after the war, still saw the courageous face of Sophie Scholl and has a struggle with his conscience over his actions. Not so with Fritz Kreisel, the inhuman Nazi judge who condemned hundreds of innocent young people to death. (including Sophie Scholl). I only wish Kreisel had been brought to justice for his actions, but unfortunately he escaped the law, dying from a bomb fragment during the war. This interrogator had a son about Sophie's age, and I would have thought he would have acted like a father, but like so many Nazis, was heavily indoctrinated in the belief that she had seriously broken the law, and it was his duty to condemn her to death.
This is a great movie. Impressive and excellently played and directed. However, I do not think that the nazis wasted the time to talk to her or leat her speak up her ideas. I think that all behaved like the judge who convicted all of them without letting them say anything.
What a girl genius! at this tender age, she had foreseen the fate and disgrace of the German nation!
What he's said is kinda true..
@grEEnTEar sure thing! hope it was helpful.
@gfks11 People think that this kind of "bureaucratic" supidities are not happening anymore!!!???!!! Unfortunately when you stand up for your ideas or when you are witness of grave injustice...they can make your life miserable and it can take a very long time to repair the damages!!! I know it by experience!!! Corrupted Power is Hell on earth!!! Kiss!!! Johanne (please excuse my english..i am french)
She’s so cute how can anyone condemn her
wow inspirierend mutig!
an awesome film
She is my hero !
@xxKateryna bitte :) und danke für deine Worte
@MrSKINFLICK You are ridiculously confused, my friend.
i need to find this movie
It should be noted that all the Allied powers - nothing needs be said of the horrendous, mass murdering Soviets - had similar laws against sedition and also tried and arrested people who agitated against the state and their war.
I suppose if Germany had won we'd see films honouring the likes of Lindbergh.
+LyovMyshkin You are wide of the mark. The Allies could be nasty if need be but the Nazis made a fine art of it. You are nearer in your description of the Soviets except that they were not racial in their hatred, only political.
awesome woman
Wow!
One of my heroines. God give me your bravado.
blueguitarblue God give me even 100th of your bravado.
4:13
7:09 When she says God I can see a demon inside him.
You can’t cause it’s an actor
I love this woman
i love this woman
Sadly, it was her brother and Alexander Schmorell that wrote most of the material, and put in most of the work; but it's Sophie that is remembered more. I don't think being a woman is enough to be granted more credit than she deserves, but that's how our society works I guess.
@anebt "Have you become my enemy for being a tool?" Me
Treason against tyranny is obedience to God
Sophie Scholl, I want 2 nominate u as next in the running up for Rebulician, also the Demos are filling us up with whatever they wish, hating both Christian and Jew, if I were to give 5 rounds I'll just pull my hair out over it.
I'm a great-granddaugther on my mom's mom side of the family who was a Jew. I still am a Jew.
And am waiting while Election stuff makes up its mind. I'm in the Southwest for safety reasons.
I watched the movie about 4 years ago... SO moving, touching and sad!!!
I cried at the end, when she was executed. It was really heart breaking.
I still ask myself how come the German people, majority of them followed a monster like Hitler and supported the nazis. It's unbelievable.
She threw her life and the lives of many others away needlessly, it's all very well being a martyr to the cause but it achieved nothing. Brave she may well have been, but bravery to a lost cause serves no purpose.
I agree. She threw herself for nothing. she was brave for nothing.
for nothing?! her achievements were incalculable; she rescued the honour of Germany from the sewer, she inspired the generations that came after her. Young Germans, oppressed by the knowledge of the filth and horror of the Nazis, voted her the greatest German who ever lived. Few others in the 20th century did more to redeem their people from evil. The "1000 year Reich" collapsed in 12, but her name will live forever.
"A lost cause" ? Are you insane ? Resistance is not about bravery, it's fighting for freedom and honour, because your conscience tells you to do so. With people like we would still live under third Reich !
:-)
All should also see "For the Greater Glory". Obama could be the exact 'American" replica of Presidente Plutarco Calles, and we may very well experience here what Catholic Mexico experienced under Calles.

Lüge!
This is a Hollywood script, not part of the interrogation, how dare you people lie like hell. ???
Anti-Nazi and hero(ine) is a contradiction in terms. Anti-Nazi and traitor are synonyms.
