    Very sad. My old German teacher Frau Freunmeyer from Degerlock, Stuttgart studied in Munich, was a member of the white rose and knew Sophie and the group. She also acted as a courier. I only know this because when I lived in Stuttgart in 1979 (and had my lessons) I would try to get a break from the grammar by asking her about the war. She never, ever volunteered information. But told snippets, since I questioned her incessantly. Her husband (a physicist) managed to escape to Switzerland, but she could not get out of Germany. Many were simply Evangelical Christians, as she was. I never refer to Germans as Nazis but rather Nazis as German.

    I admire the White Rose Resistance so much! The fact that they went above and beyond the rest of the country to educate people about what was REALLY going on in the war, says so much about their character and actual love for Germany. It is inspirational that they were willing to risk, and eventually give up their life, to expose the NAZIS rather than just blending into the rest of the Germans.

      Well, at least some of you guys understand where you could end up if you continue without reflecting on history.
      Let me tell you, as a German, tho born way after the war, I'm still thankful to America, as an entity and a people. You guys managed to help end the madness that gripped my country by the balls for a 12 years. Not trying to shit-talk over here but believe me, if SHTF in the States in a way similar to what went down in my country after the Machtergreifung (love that expression), quite a lot of us would be willing to return the favor.
      If America becomes *any* type of dictatorship, it would de facto destroy our beloved Free World. I'm pretty sure a lot of other Europeans share this sentiment.

    3:31 "... Besides they didn't have any experience with democracy, anyway." ... Not true! When Hitler was appointed chancellor on Jan 30, 1933, Germany was a democracy and had fair elections. There were numerous political parties for whom you could vote. To pass a law, a bill had to go through the processes of discussion, arguments etc. within the Reichstag
    Hitler himself had even promised a general and fair election for March 1933. However, ...
    However, one week before the election was to take place, a major terrorist attack occurred. The Reichstag building burned down. Hitler immediately declared the terrorists were the great nemesis of German society: German Communist party. It was an attempt, Hitler declared, to take over of the nation.
    Because of the "communist takeover," President Hindenburg to granted Hitler emergency powers. Hindenburg agreed to pass a "Law for the Protection of the People and the State." This law gave Hitler the power he wanted. Among the first things Hitler did was ban the Communists and Socialists taking part in elections. He arrested the leaders from both parties and shutdown their newspaper offices. Meanwhile, to "keep the peace" and maintain law and order, the Hitler's SA (the "Brown Shirts") roamed the streets beating up those who openly opposed Hitler.

    • @SagesseNoir
      @SagesseNoir 3 роки тому

      An exaggeration. But it is true that Germany had precious LITTLE experience of democracy. At least compared to England, the USA or even France, all three which had more than two generations of experience with democracy. Since the Weimar Republican was formed around about 1918 (at earliest), the Weimar Republic was not even one full generation old when Hitler came to power in 1932. Establishing a democratic republic is one thing. Developing deeply rooted democratic habits, values, ways of thinking and political traditions may be something else. Even in the USA, there were fascistic movements and even a plot to oust FDR and topple the republic. How much resistance would the American people have offered if that had happened? We can probably never know even though one hopes more resistance than happened in Germany.

    This is a great video account it's more informative than many on UA-cam. It is of interest to me here in the UK where little is known about the white rose as the media haven't shown much material about them. All of the nazis crimes are dealt with in their leaflets. That their Christianity led them to this conflict with the regime is affirming and inspirational as well as a great testimony to the world

      My pleasure, its a good film. My only problem with it was that they deleted an early scene which was supposed to take place just in-between when Hans said he'd take the leaflets into university and when Sophie said she'd go with him. Alexander dabs some black ink under his nose and does an imitation of Hitler announcing his defeat at the hands of the 6th Leaflet of the White Rose. We see them under stressful circumstances through the whole film, it's just nice to see them goofing off and having a laugh for a change, even though it does make it a little sad when you remember how young they all are. @@kennizhou6333

      Gernan here. They were still brainwashed and yes many people absolutely admired the nazis and hitler. Lets not rewrite history. In order to do better one has to acknowledge what happened. Noone forced the ppl to stand by the road and celebrate Hitler like a Rockstar. Of course there were people critical but all in all the regime only lasted a decade and the support in the behinning was massive. Im sure if the third reich lasted longer more resistance would have popped up but during this period people were absolutely brainwashed.

    This clip is great but has a lot of things wrong. First of all the White Rose was created as a means to give conscience to the academic comunity since these students have been actually in the Eastern Front and witnessed nazi atrocities first hand, as future medics it was a part of their activities to assist in the war effort. Hans Scholl and Alexander Schmorell where the founders, professor Hubert only appear afterwards. Sophie was the last of the elements to join,she was Hans sister and joined the same University in 1942 when her brother was already in it for 4 years and had activitiy in the White Rose. It was Sophie that threw the leaflef papers in the University and called the attention of the janitor, resulting in their arrest. It was an impulsive act from her part that had terrible consequences. The White Rose elements where already under Gestapo´s radar before this happened.
