This made me think of an idea for the front iron sight if you lose the rear, paint the outside square a different color, such as red for example, so that you should only see a red square with a white circle, no black, which would mean your front sight is aligned to your eye. It's not perfect because of having two eyes, but it should help in being able to use the front sight only. Try shooting with the rear sight off and see how it goes. You'll probably instinctively still have decent aim even without a rear sight since the front is still part of the slide.
I'd absolutely love to try that, but issue (with this particular red dot) it sits so high up that when looking through, you dint see the front iron sight. Now, if I get a thinner plate, then I'd love to try that
