I completely forgot that Moody got his eye after Voldemort fell. I always thought it was much earlier. Given how cautious Moody is, there's no way he would just use any old magical artifact, especially one of unknown origin to replace his eye. So at the very least he must have gotten it from Dumbledore (who else would he trust?) From that logic, Dumbledore making it isn't a huge leap as he wouldn't give Moody something he didn't 100% trust himself and the only way to do that would be to make it. Somewhat circular logic but it does make sense in context.

This would be so awesome but I think the eye would replace the cloak and the deluminator would replace the stone. SCB made a video before theorizing that Dumbledore made the deluminator as an attempt to recreate the powers of the stone (i.e. reaching your loved ones) and in this video they talk about the eye’s power to see through the cloak. The three objects are almost like anti-Hollows. The eye penetrates the cloak, the deluminator brings you to your loved ones, but only if they are alive unlike the stone which shows you your dead loved ones but can’t bring you to them, and Hagrid’s umbrella is a humble wand which people are led to believe is not even actually a wand, while the elder wand is famous and believed to be the most powerful wand of all. Anyway, a What If? video about this would be great!
Harry is already the bona fide master of the Cloak, there's no way Tom could get it without first killing Harry and then after that he'd have no reason to pursue the Wand or the Stone.

I am not sold on the idea that the eye was made by Dumbledore, thou he might have helped enchanting it. However I feel like the biggest misconception is with the, "ability to Invisibility Cloaks". I don't think the eye can see beneath an invisibility cloak, it can simply see a protection spell in effect. And that may have something to do with the color blue, and how that arbsorbs light from sources.
It’s confirmed the eye can see through Harry’s cloak, because in the same scene where he sees Harry under it, he sees Harry mouthing and pointing at the Marauders Map telling Moody that it belongs to him, so Snape won’t take it.
It is likely the eye sends out constant variations of the revelio charm. This would also be a great explanation as to why it can see through the cloak. Recall in chamber of secrets Dumbledore is able to use homenium revelio to reveal Harry beneath the cloak
What if Harry wasn't the true master of the cloak? If you think about it, the cloak stayed in the bloodline because it was handed down through the generations. Something that’s always bothered me a little is how Barry Crouch Jr is so adamant that he hated death eaters who went free, effectively denouncing their allegiance with Voldy, yet, during his hearing he displays determined denial of his own guilt. Belatrix, on the other hand, continues her bold support of Voldemort in the face of conviction. It just seems as though it’s a bit against character, given how he is later revealed to be.
Maybe he was the only one who had a chance to walk free because od his family connections. After all, that's what happened, his mother freed him from azkaban. He could have been pretending to foul her. Bellatrix probably didn't have any hope so she just used the situation to show her support to voldy.
His issue was with the fact that they'd abandoned the cause more than anything. Claiming innocence to go free and then work from the shadows isn't necessarily abandoning the cause, so it does line up with his principles in theory.
Since Barty Jr had both eyes, maybe Mad Eye didn't need to be without one. It looks like a monocle. It could have been used similar to his "Foe glass" or a Sneakoscope.
as the form factor of the films are faster so might be miss remembering it for the film version but when Barty could not take any more potion you hear and see him in pain as i takes it off i would think his normal eye was going back pushing against Moody's eye
This theory about Dumbledore creating the eye with the Elder Wand has been my personal theory for so long. I've actually commented about it on some of your videos. I'm super happy you've created a video about this theory because it makes so much sense :D
I think the cloak and the eye are ancient magic, that’s how dumbledore could see the cloak, or know it was there, he can sense ancient magic, like he did in the cave
I think it's much simpler than that. Dumbledore didn't see through the cloak. He simply deduced they were hiding there under it because of how Hagrid was acting. Especially with Hagrid just saying out loud, to no one in particular, "follow the spiders"
@blueberrycranberrycherry because Hagrid knew where they were and kept glancing there. Dumbledore saw where Hagrid kept looking and that's how he knew where they were
My head canon as to how the eye was made was the youngest brothers descendants made it at one point. Or by the youngest brother himself. Imagine your son having taken the cloak one day, and you can't find your kids, because they are perfectly invisible, so you invent an eye to see even those hidden by your ancestors cloak.
I don’t believe Dumbledore was necessarily seeing through Harry’s cloak, but more so detecting the magic similar to how he does in the cave when searching for the locket.
I really liked your previous theory that the eye was the one that belonged to the Three Fates, the all-seeing sisters who shared one eye. Now that you've connected it so convincingly to Dumbledore, I'm conflicted!
i was NOT aware of the podcast but i am REALLY happy tpo know now. i follow another youtuber who does the game of thrones series, id also love to hear your take on that too if u ever cover it although i can understand why if u dont. but yeah i will definitely be watching those videos.
Ok, I need you guys to break down another passage of the Deluminator. IIRC, it gives *snippets of conversation* before and after the user's name was said. Dumbledoor had it in his possession all through the first war and up to DH. Every time someone says his name. I'd like to see a video exploring the possibilities :)
Anyone considering better help for their therapy. Please look up the controversies around it. When in a mentally unwell state i wish upon no one to additionally deal with uncomfortable situations brought on by the site or the therapy itself. Take care everyone
I too have always interpreted it that Dumbledore can see Harry under the cloak when he goes to the mirror of Erised for the final time before it is moved.
I love your theories, they are always so good and even after 20+ years make me reread and think about things in the books. Have you ever consdered, doing a theory on Harry s soul part and how it affects his feelings towards people? The abilities (like being more resilient against the Imperio) it might help him achieve? I had a discussion specifically about Harry being able to resist "Moody s" Imperio and the little voice coming up in his head for it. is it Harry s subconsiousness or is it Voldemort, who does not want to be controlled? Also... Could the part of Voldemorts soul be the reason Harry has this HUGE dilke towards Snape (in the books) - because up until Goblet the soul piece might think Snape a traitor? The sould pievce is sort of my "look up point" for my current reread.
In Chamber of Secrets I assumed Dumbledore knew where Harry and Ron were in the hut due to him being a skilled Legilimens and just being able to read their minds
One thing I always thought was that Moody’s eye is similar to those Defense Against the Dark Arts Eye tower things. Always thought they were like the sneakascopes that would whirl when someone untrustworthy was nearby, but in this case that it would dart to stare at the offending wizard or item.
HEYY BROTHERRR!!! ❤️💙 I have a question that I thought you guys could ponder. If Harry was presented with a QILIN from Fantastic Beasts, would it bow to him because he has got a part of VOLDEMORTS SOUL in him as well??? Or is Harry too pure???
Not trying to say I’m anywhere near as good at answering this stuff as the carlin bros are, not even close, but in my opinion it definitely 100,000% would’ve bowed for Harry. It bowed for Dumbledore and Harry is a thousand times more pure than him. Honestly i think the one thing that makes Harry special is his purity and that’s saying something because there’s a lot that makes him special.
What if the reason that Dumbledore asked to borrow the cloak was so that he could test the powers of the eye that he was inventing on the most powerful secrecy object in existence?
23:21 In possession of the elder wand and the invisibility cloak at the time, if I'm not mistaken? It only makes since to test the eye against the most powerful invisibility cloak ever to make sure it is the best of the best
To add to this: Dumbledore was studying the cloak at the same time that Moody lost his eye! He could've easily tested the eye to see how effective it was before gifting it to Moody.
I was wondering this just a day or 2 ago, I have just started the video so before I watch it I'm guessing it was Dumbledore using the Elder Wand to make the eye and that's what gives it the power to even pass the power of Harry's Invisibility Cloak despite it being a Deathly Hallow.
I have a theory that Dumbledore's half-moon glasses showed him more than improved vision. I think they were a magical object that revealed possible futures.
Whilst it is possible and maybe even probable Dumbledore made they eye, I have a few issues with the theory (theories I guess). 1. Do we know the Elder Wand really could repair wands? We only see it in this one specific case where Harry is the owner of both wands, so we can't really say whether it can repair others. I always wondered what happened to Dumbledore's original wand and whether he just magicked that into an umbrella for Hagrid? It doesn't really matter either way, as if the EW could repair wands, Dumbledore would have done. 2. I don't think Dumbledore could see Harry under the coat at Hagrid's, I think he just used intuition. Hagrid was being rather obvious by looking at that corner and being all jittery. To anyone who knew Harry possessed the cloak, it would have been clear he was there. That or he just saw him walk there earlier from his office window or used non-verbal magic. That's sorta it, I do believe Dumblie created the eye, but the biggest question that remains: WHAT DOESE THE BOGGART LOOK LIKE TO MOODY (when he sees it through several floors)?! Sorry for shouting, but I've been asking myself that for years. Is it a shapeless mass or something he fears? Also that whole seeing through clothes thing is mega creepy considering he's at a school... How does it work? Does he have to focus on it to look through it? It seems a little head-fornicating otherwise.
I don't know if my 2 comments a few weeks ago had any impact on this video or theory regarding the comments on Dumbeldore's eye color and the possibilitiy that Dumbeldore both made the eye and had one of his own, but it is my head canon that someone saw the comments and worked off of them❤️ Great vide! Looking forward to your next podcast episodes. I love the longer ones where you guys go on tangents and talk about random things.
I think the evidence for it is much more sparse, but I liked better the theory that it's Grindelwalds eye that he has. Still perhaps given by Dumbledore, harkening back to their connection. Or even an invention of the two of them during their time together
Yes, maybe they invented it together and maybe they made two. I think I figured out how it works and I think it uses Thestral hair like the Hollows. Grindelwald said: "don't we all die a little." Wich means he can see everything that is dying / aging. Alastor also can see through walls.
0:00 Who made Moody's eye? Oh please, it was given to the 4th peverol brother by death! He asked to be all seeing, but that just helped him see death comming for him and we went insane. the other brotheres disavowed all relation to him and he was forgotten
You also overlooked that Dumbledore had the cloak in his possession at the time he would have made the eye after he borrowed it from James. Him having the cloak certainly adds more strength to the theory.
I don’t think we have enough to say that Dumbledore can see through Harry’s invisibility cloak. But in Halfblood Prince we see and hear Dumbledore talk about how magic always leaves traces. I think he discerned the traces. He did not see through the cloak.
i very much like this theory, i've always been a bit "meh" on you guys' idea that it was somehow grindewald's blue eye, just didn't seem to fit or make all that much sense, but i have no trouble accepting that dumbledore with the elder wand could make something on par in ability with a deathly hallow, really nicely put together this one!
I've always been under the impression that seeing as Dumbledore always seemed to know when Harry was around wile under the cloak and the Dumbledore had the cloak for years before giving it to Harry that he had put some kind of charm on it to let him know if it was near and that Moody's eye was able to see the spell that the headmaster had put on it
I was rewatching the first movie with my little sister who finally turned 8 and could start watching the movies (parents rule, not mine) and she asked a pretty interesting question. She saw the part where Harry stabs the book with the fang and I explained to her that the venom is what’s killing it. She asked me “does it have to be magical for that to work? Or could we throw the book in lava?” And that got me to go on a whole breakdown trying to think that through. Like magical items were used to destroy the hocrux’s but what if instead of using the sword or fang, we simply use muggle creations like a hydraulic press or acts of nature like a volcano? (Or something crazy implausible like throwing the ring into a black hole?). Would those things work?
At 9:14 you show a close up of the photo of the Order of the Phoenix, zoomed in on Frank and Alice Longbottom, with Moody in the background. Moody already has his magical eye in that image, so he couldn't have suffered that particular injury while capturing Bellatrix and Barty. He already had it.
Pretty sure Dumbledore is just good ad deduction and could tell that there was magical concealment going on and made the connection of Harry and Ron being in Hagrid’s hut.
I was always under the assumption that the eye was actually created by Grindelwald, as the keystone in his search for the Hallows. To see through all and detect the lingering traces of the Perveral's magic (or Death depending on where you land on who craeted them). Additionally, and I may be miss remembering something here but, isn't there a theory that Dumbledore put a charm or something on the cloak. The cloak being unfindable being disproved by the eye, or that he senses the mark he placed not the cloak giving him a rough sense that it is present.
Can we do a J vs Ben which is buzz in style - so quizmaster plays a clip from the audiobook and whoever can buzz in the fastest to say what book it is from and the context gets a point! I listen to Stephen Fry, and the brothers listen to Jim Dale so mixing up the narrators would also add some spice to the quiz
Hey! Love your Videos and particulary your theories! I had a question: Could it be possible that Voldemort also had a time turner in school? He is Always described as being a fantastic Student and even without muggle studies, he would have had 11 subjects (Hermione still had one after she quid Trelawnys class) And I think it could be argued that He had all Others considering that you would need a lot of subjects to be viewed as one of the best students Hogwarts ever had and be ready for a great future in the ministery. Edit: Especially in year 5 he could have used the extra time to search for the chamber of secrets and of course to keep a close eye in Hagrid (although maybe He entrusted his followers with the latter).
Hey there! I was wondering if I could make a suggestion. It would be amazing if you could create a video of Harry accepting Lupin's offer in the Deathly Hallows. I'm sure many fans, including myself, would love to see that iconic moment come to life. Thank you so much for considering it!
According to the lore, Dumbledore can't see hidden objects, or see through invisibility cloaks, but he tends to use spells like Homenum Revelio and the telepathy one whenever he goes somewhere. Since he is a master of nonverbal. He can cast them easily. It does raise a question to why he does it in every place he goes always
i think i remember you guys having a theory about this eye at some time. the scenario that moody got it from dumbledore was similar but the origin of the eye was different. the theory was that it was grindelwalds eye which dumbledore took after his victory. i always likes that theory and forgot it wasnt canon haha this new theory is also nice thought
i have had a look through the comments and haven't seen anyone mention this. i do know that the films can be very inaccurate and I have read each book multiple times myself. but just a simple question. the photo that is taken of the order has Moody in it with his eye, as well as having the Longbottoms in the photo unharmed. i think this theory is really well thought through and makes a lot of sense. i also watch almost all of your HP theory videos and love them and the series.
I don't really know if Dumbledore could see through Harry's invisibility cloak or not, but I kinda think that maybe more cause of Dumbledore being one of the best legilimens in the series. That could be described as being able to see through one clearly.
Love this theory! My headcannon has always been that he received the eye before he lost his own. Then he purposely disfigured himself to gain the power of the eye.
and let's also not forget; Dumbledore had the invisibility cloak for a time, to study. could have used the knowledge gained from that to make the eye, with the Elder wand

I've always thought the eye was created by the Peverells around the time they created the other objects. But this is an interesting theory.
I'm sure they also used to argue this! I remember this being a theory of theirs
Love love love y'all!!!!
This theory about Dumbledore creating the eye with the Elder Wand has been my personal theory for so long. I've actually commented about it on some of your videos. I'm super happy you've created a video about this theory because it makes so much sense :D
I did not in fact know about this podcast and now know what I will be listening to tonight while I prep my store for our inventory audit tomorrow.
@@camwyn256 he didn’t see them, he sensed the ancient magic, and knew the cloak was ancient magic
@@camwyn256 plus how would he know where to look even if he did just deduce it
This tracks like the player's ability in Legend of Hogwarts. Not a bad take.
@blueberrycranberrycherry because Hagrid knew where they were and kept glancing there. Dumbledore saw where Hagrid kept looking and that's how he knew where they were
Love your videos!🎉🎉🎉🎉
My head canon as to how the eye was made was the youngest brothers descendants made it at one point. Or by the youngest brother himself.
Imagine your son having taken the cloak one day, and you can't find your kids, because they are perfectly invisible, so you invent an eye to see even those hidden by your ancestors cloak.
I don’t believe Dumbledore was necessarily seeing through Harry’s cloak, but more so detecting the magic similar to how he does in the cave when searching for the locket.
I´ve been waiting for this one ever since you mentioned it in I think through the Griffin door. So curious to find out what your theories are!
I'd like to see a video exploring the possibilities :)
this + chocolate frogs card spynet
Anyone considering better help for their therapy. Please look up the controversies around it. When in a mentally unwell state i wish upon no one to additionally deal with uncomfortable situations brought on by the site or the therapy itself. Take care everyone
I too have always interpreted it that Dumbledore can see Harry under the cloak when he goes to the mirror of Erised for the final time before it is moved.
yeah, but i always believed it was because he performed a non-verbal Homonum Revelio but idk
Also, we know that later in the story, he doesn’t need a cloak to be invisible. So why would he have wanted to borrow the cloak if not to study it?
23:21 In possession of the elder wand and the invisibility cloak at the time, if I'm not mistaken? It only makes since to test the eye against the most powerful invisibility cloak ever to make sure it is the best of the best
Love the stick & shine pages!
Love your breakdowns, always so entertaining. Right or wrong, I have to agree this take of Mad Eye Moody’s eye makes sense to me
The fact I just about teared up when Ben started naming all the marauders plus lily, marlene and dorcas, probably indicates I have a problem.
That is a really good theory. Nicely done fellas
I think the evidence for it is much more sparse, but I liked better the theory that it's Grindelwalds eye that he has. Still perhaps given by Dumbledore, harkening back to their connection. Or even an invention of the two of them during their time together
It would make sense that they both made it together as they were both obsessed w/ the deathly hallows & would need a way to find the cloak
Yes, maybe they invented it together and maybe they made two. I think I figured out how it works and I think it uses Thestral hair like the Hollows.
Grindelwald said: "don't we all die a little." Wich means he can see everything that is dying / aging. Alastor also can see through walls.
hey, brother! So cool, been waiting for this one 🤙
Video idea- how did Umbridge bet moodys eye
0:00 Who made Moody's eye? Oh please, it was given to the 4th peverol brother by death! He asked to be all seeing, but that just helped him see death comming for him and we went insane. the other brotheres disavowed all relation to him and he was forgotten
There’s no proof at all to this.
You also overlooked that Dumbledore had the cloak in his possession at the time he would have made the eye after he borrowed it from James. Him having the cloak certainly adds more strength to the theory.
Also, we know how good Dumbledore is at detecting/analyzing obscure/powerful spells (see the cave with the locket in Half-Blood Prince).
A very Good Video 👌🏻👍🏻
I dig it.
I always thought Moody saw Harry's foot stuck in the trick stair, not through the cloak...
This also makes Moody something of a parallel to Wormtail
I don’t think we have enough to say that Dumbledore can see through Harry’s invisibility cloak. But in Halfblood Prince we see and hear Dumbledore talk about how magic always leaves traces. I think he discerned the traces. He did not see through the cloak.
i very much like this theory, i've always been a bit "meh" on you guys' idea that it was somehow grindewald's blue eye, just didn't seem to fit or make all that much sense, but i have no trouble accepting that dumbledore with the elder wand could make something on par in ability with a deathly hallow, really nicely put together this one!
Getting an ad right before the “Hey Brother!” in the SCB jingle might be the single worst moment of my life
I've always been under the impression that seeing as Dumbledore always seemed to know when Harry was around wile under the cloak and the Dumbledore had the cloak for years before giving it to Harry that he had put some kind of charm on it to let him know if it was near and that Moody's eye was able to see the spell that the headmaster had put on it
a new theory about an artifact in Harry Potter
- is this connected to the Peverell family ?
- it's connected to the Peverell family !
My theory: Moody's eye is a fourth Deathly Hallow
Maybe this also explains why Dumbledore borrowed the cloak from James - to understand it in order to give the eye the power to see through it… 🤔
I was rewatching the first movie with my little sister who finally turned 8 and could start watching the movies (parents rule, not mine) and she asked a pretty interesting question.
You guys are fantastic 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I mean the symbol of the Deathly Hallows does kinda look like an eye, so maybe Moody´s eye is another such crazy artifact
Pretty sure Dumbledore is just good ad deduction and could tell that there was magical concealment going on and made the connection of Harry and Ron being in Hagrid’s hut.
wsg i aint seen YOU in time
I was always under the assumption that the eye was actually created by Grindelwald, as the keystone in his search for the Hallows.
I dig this theory a lot. ty for the content.
Hey! Love your Videos and particulary your theories! I had a question: Could it be possible that Voldemort also had a time turner in school? He is Always described as being a fantastic Student and even without muggle studies, he would have had 11 subjects (Hermione still had one after she quid Trelawnys class)
And I think it could be argued that He had all Others considering that you would need a lot of subjects to be viewed as one of the best students Hogwarts ever had and be ready for a great future in the ministery.
Man I have been wondering that question for like a decade.
Chamber of THE Secrets? Lol love you guys
Nailed it 🪄🧙🦅
i think i remember you guys having a theory about this eye at some time. the scenario that moody got it from dumbledore was similar but the origin of the eye was different. the theory was that it was grindelwalds eye which dumbledore took after his victory. i always likes that theory and forgot it wasnt canon haha this new theory is also nice thought
Mad-Eye's eye has always reminded me of the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings.
i have had a look through the comments and haven't seen anyone mention this.
i do know that the films can be very inaccurate and I have read each book multiple times myself. but just a simple question. the photo that is taken of the order has Moody in it with his eye, as well as having the Longbottoms in the photo unharmed. i think this theory is really well thought through and makes a lot of sense. i also watch almost all of your HP theory videos and love them and the series.
This was a good one!
I don't really know if Dumbledore could see through Harry's invisibility cloak or not, but I kinda think that maybe more cause of Dumbledore being one of the best legilimens in the series. That could be described as being able to see through one clearly.
Love your videos
Love this theory! My headcannon has always been that he received the eye before he lost his own. Then he purposely disfigured himself to gain the power of the eye.
and let's also not forget; Dumbledore had the invisibility cloak for a time, to study. could have used the knowledge gained from that to make the eye, with the Elder wand
Following this logic, the eye feels like a countermeasure against the invisibility cloak in case it was ever stolen.
I love this!
I just realized that both you and sketch say “ Hey brother ☝🏻” that is all lol
