    View the Yamaha EAD-10 over at PMT Online today: goo.gl/qVukER
    Yamaha drum specialist, Simon Edgoose, gives PMTVUK an in-depth overview of the revolutionary new EAD-10 system. EAD stands for Electronic Acoustic Drums, and has been designed to capture and modify the sound of your acoustic drum kit, offering endless tonal options and making recording a kit much simpler.
    The EAD-10 comes in two parts, the sensor, which clamps onto the bass drum rim, and a separate module which does all the clever DSP processing. The Sensor has microphones inside, as well as a trigger and it is designed to pick up the sound of the whole drum kit from one central location to give a really great sound. The Sensor takes the sound of the kit and sends it to the EAD module. Here you can add studio effects and/or samples onto the sound.
    This has been made possible by using Yamaha's extensive knowledge of DSP (Digital Signal Processing), effects and sampling and combining it into one product for drummers. You can store these into 200 locations or 'Scenes' as they are called in the EAD. A Scene is a complete setting of effects, samples and settings. The EAD module also allows for 90 seconds internal recording (or up to 30 minutes on a USB stick), importing of up to 100 of your own samples, and you can also connect triggers and pads to further expand your kit.
    There's also a Yamaha EAD companion app, Rec 'n' Share, available from the Apple app store, which allows you to jam along to your favourite songs, add a click track, speed up/slow down and loop a track. You can also film videos onto your iPhone using the EAD-10 audio and upload direct to UA-cam, all from inside the app.
    Take a look and listen with PMTVUK, and check one out at your local Professional Music Technology when they hit stores in the near future...

    This is a game changer. I haven't bought anything by way of electronic drums since my uber expensive Simmons SDS7 back in the mid 80s, but this EAD-10 will be my next drum purchase. My plans are to blend this in with my acoustic drums and mics.

    Sweet - Just received mine and it's amazing! was playing around with it all afternoon and even used it to jam with a few friends. Hard to fully realize it's potential in my basement without sound isolating the drums themselves, but I can't wait to try it through the PA system at our next gig (small to medium sized bars/clubs should be fantastic). I have a small kit and it seemed to pick everything up beautifully. Was using the Sabian Sound Kit but this is much more convenient and much more capable in terms of sound effects. I've been considering trying it with my L80 practice cymbals and Silent Strokes, but then I'd have to get additional triggers to get the most out of it. Wondering where you guys get drumless versions of your favorite songs to practice to with the Rec'n'share app.

      How does this cope on stage in a loud full band scenario with high stage volume?
      Would it be better to have the triggers connected, rather than rely on the stereo mic? I am guessing if you have a loud drum monitor or a loud bassist at your side then the mics would pick those up too and cause double/multiple triggers and feedback?

    Can the mic and trigger be fed to a different engine such a DTX M12? Or just a regular mixer and be used as a general mic too as a replacement for overheads? Or does it have to be routed via the engine that comes with it?

    doesn't seem to get much cymbal volume when it records. I wouldn't use it as the only mic for recording, but this will make it way easier. you'd just need a couple overhead mics or a condenser sitting a few feet from the kit

    Two questions ... 1) Before I upload a recorded video drum cover, where I used a click track while playing, I can pull the clicking sound out of the final audio, correct? 2) When recording a drum cover via Rec'N'Share, listening through my headphones, can I also route the sound to a PA (assuming via a 1/4 TRS to XLR cable) so someone else can hear the cover while I'm playing?

  • @threethreethree3
    @threethreethree3 6 років тому +1

    This looks incredible, I want to use it on my next couple of tours. I will be playing in a large range of different rooms (big and small) and I am concerned that in smaller spaces that the microphone on the bass drum will pick up other instruments or SPD-SX samples from the onstage fold back speakers . I would love to be able to alter the sound of my kit depending on the song but I dont want to alter my guitarists tone or our samples in any way. I know he said it would be ok live but can this be guaranteed even in small settings with loud on stage fold back?

      Do you have a major problem with bleed with conventional mics? If not then it shouldn’t be an issue. It doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. You can always use conventional miking and use the EAD as an Fx processor/bus for your kit at the same time. As with everything fx based, just be sensible and all should be fine.

    Question
    Since it's not being individually miced, once in a DAW can you mix individual drums and cymbals??

    • @simonedgoose4873
      @simonedgoose4873 6 років тому +4

      No, you can’t separate out the audio, but the EAD also sends midi data from the kick and whatever else you have triggers on. What I’ve done recently is trigger a VSTi library for the drums and mix it with the audio data from the EAD so you get the dynamics from the drums and cymbals and the character from the plug in. Best of both worlds and can sound great with careful tweaking. The other thing is that the balance from the EAD is very natural anyway as it closer to your ear position than conventional mics so it’s sounds very ‘real’ as a stereo signal.

    Hi Simon, Tom from Icon Music here! I’ve stumbled across your vids before, I thought ‘this guy knows what he’s talking about’ now the penny has dropped! Haha. I’d sent you an email, but if you see this first, I’m really keen to figure out how to import samples. I can see you have done it! I’ve been into scene edit and selected a trigger, then went to assign from the wave files and they aren’t there (the usb is plugged in). Is there a size/length limit? They are in the root directory of the device. Do I need to format it first or anything??

      Hi, unfortunately not at the moment (although this may change with future updates). Currently it just allows you to record the audio from the EAD module, combining it with video from the phone. The app is really handy to have, even without owning an EAD, as it allows you to add click tracks to any song on your phone as well as adjusting speed and looping. Really great for practicing, definitely worth a download...on the app store under Rec 'N' Share. Thanks!

    Great review. My question is also along the idea of replacing microphones. In an isolated drum cage (e.g. ClearSonic type full enclosure) situation (house of worship, etc.), could this be your only drum source or perhaps the EAD plus one central overhead condenser mic? Sounds a lot simpler to mix!

    • @mojudas
      @mojudas 6 років тому +2

      David Leigh, you wouldn't even need an isolation cage to be honest! All the performance audio you hear from this video is just the EAD (other than the camera audio in the comparison clips!) There's no extra audio blended in and the room this was shot in is the storage room of our warehouse (quite large and with a high ceiling) simon literally gave us two jack leads from the module for the audio! He also assured me that with a live band you don't get much crosstalk from the other instruments because of the close mic technique and DSP in the module. Depending on the size of your kit tho (if it's a large setup) I think an overhead mic would give you a little more control over the cymbals in the mix should you needed to add more. The module has a built in trigger for the bass drum which really gives it a lot of punch as well.

    • @DavidLeighAlsace
      @DavidLeighAlsace 6 років тому +1

      Actually, I'm looking at the isolation cage from the other perspective - we need it to keep the live drum sound out of the rest of the room. We don't have it yet but we're going to do it and when we do, we need to cross the bridge of micing the drums. My question is, whether we could use the EAD INSTEAD of micing the drums and would the isolation cage have any kind of negative effect for the EAD? The kit is slightly above average with 3 ride toms and a floor tom, 2 crashes, a splash, a ride and hi-hat. I found the cymbals a bit missing in the video, which is why I asked about an extra overhead. My thought is that with decent mics for a set this size + all the mixing necessary, that the EAD might come in similar in price range, make a simpler mix AND then give you all the extra possibilities for sounds/styles. Am I barking up the wrong tree or not?

      The EAD10 works with noise reduced cymbals/heads, but you will need an audio signal for the microphone to pick up. If you use noiseless heads, you will can add e.g DT50S triggers for snare and toms. Bass Drum triger is included in the censor unit. All the best, Yamaha Drums

      An array of 2 mics is still an array. It's not technically wrong. I guess there should be at least 3 mics in there, one for the kick trigger and 2 for the stereo micing of the rest of the kit. Depends if you want to call the kick trigger a mic or not.

    Unless ya had a trigger for everything, if you used it live, it would be one horrible sounding kit. This was about the best vid i made with Rec n share ua-cam.com/video/XwfPJv5X3mo/v-deo.html. The problemS. The click doesn't work over 90% of the time for Rec. If you want to use anything other than a 5 piece kit, you won't hear other drums. If using big drums, forgetaboutit! It did get me playing again after spine surgery, and got me learning DAW, so it's worth the investment if you're not computer savvy. Tip, mount the trigger at 11 o'clock

    Over hyped and over priced. Extremely disappointing performance and, luckily, the retailer it was purchased from as agreed to allow me to return it after a frustrating week in my practice room with various sized kits, heads etc. It looks, feels and sounds like a toy. And that from a Yamaha fan.

    Would you need to add a wood hoop to a Manu Katche Drum kit? The bass drum has a tom hoop.
