Car Bomb Gratitude Reaction & Breakdown | Decomposer Point of View
Elliot Hoffman is the man. Underrated drummer. This is both a satisfying and unexpected review! Much appreciated
Yeah. I feel like anyone who knows who he is rates him, it's just that few people know of Car Bomb/Elliot Hoffman.
I feel like if you're listening to carbomb you're already pretty deep in this space. You're going to recognize that he's a stand out drummer.
Yeah had the chance to talk to him 2019 after a show this guy is so grounded and skilled.
He is one of the best in my book, especially for metal. I've yet to see other drummers in the metal scene reach the same scope of technicality. The polyrhythms he plays are way beyond the comprehension of other musicians, especially outside of jazz, djent and mathcore. Imagine Dave Lombardo trying to play this song. He would give up instantly.
He's the absolute legend, indeed! Particularly in the ability to apply his mind-boggling technical excellence for MUSICAL purposes, let alone in the Car Bomb's purely innovative way! I'm sure with more exposure through some collabs with other bands, Elliott will get the recognition he deserves.
I remmeber listening to car bomb on a train and someone tapped me on the shoulder asking what it was cause he was a drummer and couldnt figure out the rhythm and when i gave him my headphones it was a real treat watching him react
The heaviest fact about this band is they play this stuff perfect live without in ear :-O
Without click tracks, yes. Elliot has in-ear monitors just to hear the others better (perhaps the others do too), but no click.
Nothing really wrong with a click depending on the music you're playing, but yeah, impressive
@@insederecnobody said it was. They simply said he does it. Don’t be defensive for absolutely no reason at all.
@@sealife12 I'm sorry for speaking daddy I'll never do it again
@@sealife12 why are the devisive comments ALWAYS deleted before I can read them!!?
These guys do stuff with tempo and timefeel I've never heard anyone else do. Easily one of the most forward thinking bands working today imo
Most definitely. I love how the way they utilize those somewhat forces you to reflect on what they're playing and saying with the phrasing of the music in a way I've never really heard. I'm quite sure they don't just pick a time signature for the hell of it because it sounds cool. There seems to be a deeper intentionality behind the construction of the songs. It's like they know what you think they're saying, and right when you think you understand they bring up a new point that you need to wrap your head around. You're definitely not going to be able to just turn this stuff on for the first time and straight rock out to it.
Guys check out C.B Murdoc if you haven't 🤟 "everything's going to be alright" is the most obvious example to give, but they're all killer really! Car Bomb is awesome and i cannot take away from that, but theyre not the only ones doing tricky shet ;)
Check out Hella if you haven't. Zach Hill from Death Grips on drums. Crazy frenetic and you can never tell what tempo it is beat to beat or even where the down beat is
They have such an amazing and original sound. Elliot Hoffman is a math-a-magician playing drums.
This is like the second best 😜
Never fails seeing a Car Bomb reaction and coming in and seeing fellow Dillinger fans in here lol
@@gnarxy I'm dying for a Dillinger review
We need some btbam- white walls
YEAH. Dillingers 43% burnt would be a fantastic reaction. Love that album
Elliot is an absolute SAVAGE!..
Carbomb are on the frontline of bands pushing heavy music forward. Great to see you giving the lesser-known bands some love. Best music breakdowns on the webs...
Never stop...
Fun fact : Tomas Haake regards Elliott as way better than him. Saying he runs circles around Tomas
*is
and really? I never wondered about who is better, but I can totally see, that Elliot might be superior technically, and its Not like that makes Haake a Bad player all of a sudden. It just means that Tomas is the legend of His generation, while Elliot is a legend of the following one.
btw, where did you dig that up? I would love to check it out, if its an interview, or whatever.
@@19RaxR91 honestly it's a case of my friend met him and talked about elliot with Tomas and that's what he said. So nothing written down.
@@eddief60 Eh... well, either way sounds like something Haake would admit to - the guy is really humble.
@@19RaxR91 yeah tomas is exceedingly humble
@@deathonion404 I think that all the greats probably are...
Listening to Car Bomb is like going to an art exhibit and the album is the piece of art that is to be critically examined. At least it makes me feel that way listening to it.
This is definitely their most dynamic track imo, fantastic band
I love Nonagon off that album aswell
@@vanillasky9699 imo it's a perfect album, albeit kind of fatiguing
Hahaha car bomb is unlike any other band. Welcome to some crazy stuff. Their drummer is a beast.
greg from car bomb uses LOADS of effects and pedals to accomplish his guitar sounds. the traditional stuff like distortion, reverb, delay, and what not and then some really left field stuff like ring modulation and harmonizers and pitch shifters and flangers and phasers just anything you can imagine, greg has probably used it to make a sound.
Pew Pew Pew
Phasers set to STUN
Greg also creates the album artwork and many of the arrangements of the songs. Hes a certified genius passing himself off as a normal dude
NIIIICE! Car bomb are amazing! Lights out, vague skies, naked fuse, xoxoy! All their song are amazing
Xoxoy is awesome
Naked Fuse has one of my favorite sections of ANY Car Bomb song. The short part preceding the solo, then the solo itself. Can’t describe what that part does to my soul, but it’s like I’m connecting with something I’ve been searching eons for.
When Mordial was released I bought their whole discog on CD from their bandcamp page. I knew this was a band I needed to support directly.
Welcome to the Car Bomb Cult!!!!❤🤘😜🤘❤
First song heard, as a Gojira fan : Third Revelation. Then The Oppressor.
Oh my God, I love these song, let's check another one!!!!
I listened to Cellophane Stiletto, then Sets.
And I fell in love and became a huge fan. I love them so much !!
The Dillinger Escape Plan would be really cool.

dude! Car Bomb!! I love this band. I got to meet the band at one of their shows a few years back and they're all really chill guys with programming jobs lol. Their drummer Elliott Hoffman is insanely good.
Legit they have programming jobs? That’s pretty cool I like programming
@@taranloses Greg, their guitarist, is a freelance programmer and graphic designer. He’s the only one I know for sure is a programmer.
Never heard of these guys....looking forward to this video
They are insanely good. You'll not regret !
they remind me of dillinger escape plan drunk on meshuggah
I saw Car Bomb support AAL. I had seen AAL 5-6 times before. After Car Bomb finished and before AAL came on stage, I just left. I was so taken back that I spent the rest of my night listening to everything they had on spotify.
I saw them live in 2019, it was mind blowing. I didn't know them before, but immediately became a fan. It was the best way to get introduced to them.
Oh man. Yeah, that must've been intense. I'm jelly.
I first discovered Car Bomb on the Dillinger Escape Plan tour for Dissociation and what a surprise they were. Been a fan ever since.
Well that was cool! I had suggested Car Bomb on one of your vids a month or so ago and after posting I thought maybe this band didn't fit with your channel.. I'm glad I was wrong!
You should also listen to TEXTURES, their catalogue is immense, but i would recommend starting with Denying gravity, Awake, Singularity or Consonant hemispheres!
New Horizons has one of my favorite intros of all time. Such an incredible build.
Hell yes, such an underrated band. Also the bassist from Jinjer said he was heavily inspired by Textures.
Textures - great band, i'd recommend to pick some song from Phenotype album, it has alot of good stuff
@gisselle Right on! I love this band, their entire back catalogue is nothing but epic.
Silhouttes is such an underrated album! Great band recommendation
Honestly this track is like the most straight-forward and simple track of the album lmao, you should react to at least another song from this album !!
Awesome to see you review Car Bomb. They really don't have a bad track out of the 4 albums they made. This song is off Meta, which was produced by Gojira's singer. Cellophane Stiletto and Cielo Drive are a couple my favorites if you want to check more out. Also check out Archspire.
Cellophane Stiletto is an absolute banger !
YOOO he did it! So excited for this
Edit after viewing: So glad you enjoyed the song. Car Bomb has been my fave metal band since this album came out in 2016 and this song in particular is very melodic for them. If you want to hear them really crush you with heaviness try Secrets Within, Nonagon or Black Blood

at least we got car bomb here now! love it.
one of my favorite bands. they have a clear progression with each album you can hear in the production value and improving there style and sound. yes they are so underrated without any reason and i really hope they get some more attention in the next years.
If you like this, you will LOVE The Dillinger Escape Plan. Look up the song Prancer or Understanding Decay
Crazy how much good music and amazing musician we have right now. How can people even dare to ask what is my favourite! Music just keeps on surprising.
Great song choice! You gotta do Ion Dissonance and Rings of Saturn!
Nice carbomb rules
Two words, “Russian Circles”.

@@BirdNoise77 arguably, not a single album has a song worth skipping. Same with, “If these trees could talk”. Just amazing all around...
@@A.Steppe +1
@@A.Steppe ...uhm... ...just... No...
Dude, Yes 309, and one other track (maybe) was great, but overall "Empros" is a dud, to be polite.
It has a Fucking "4 chord" song for fucks sake...
Also, while I Still intend on getting ''Station'' on vinyl one of these days, the title song most definitely is something I might skip, because I find it to be so Annoyingly, not Pleasantly bland when it comes to melodic motifs, which is a problem I have with the particular band in General. That said, I cant speak on Anything past "Memorial", which I overall found decent and re-listenable for a dozen times, maybe.
Anyway, couple all of that with my opinions about the debut and "Geneva", with both overall being either hits or misses, then No - I Do Not agree with your opinion!
Jeez! I feel like my 🧠is being moshed!!! Love it!
CARRRRRRR BOOOOMMMMMMB
Also yeah they use a lot of pitch shifting in their riffs, just the one guitarist, I think he uses an axe-fx live but I don't know about the studio. Also, fun fact, they don't play to a click track live! According to the drummer at least
All axefx at least on this record and their most recent. Don't know about their first record or the waveform record.
@@drumkidstu yeah might just be pedals or studio magic on the first two, not sure if axefx existed back in 2003
who needs click tracks when you got big vibes anyways
I'd love to see you check out "Ants of the Sky" by Between the Buried and Me
Gotta check out SELKIES

I’m great full for this review, what a frigging lyric “If this ends your life be greatful”
You mentioned an Opeth video coming this week, right? Also, I think you might enjoy checking out Beyond Creation - Earthborn Evolution.
not Omnipresent Perception?
as a non-fan that song stands out as the most memorable
@@dodgrblu I actually prefer EE overall.
@@Phalse13 I just watched the music video, I had no idea the bassist got replaced, he was such a distinctive part of their sound, what happened?
I would say EE has a more refined composition and production quality, but it just lacks that something extra special about it which I'd say Omnipresent Perception has.
When I listened to that album when it came out, that was my general feeling about it all, solid, more refined, but lacking that special something, which makes the difference for someone not super into technical death metal.
I'd say it'd be good to do both chronologically especially since OP was their breakout song, but there are so many other songs to do I wouldn't want him to lol
Have you tried a band called Piah Mater? Some say it's better Opeth than Opeth...
@@dodgrblu Hugo Doyon-Karout is KILLING it on bass for BC and Equipoise
I've heard of Car Bomb but not checked them out yet. Sounds like Deftones on crack. I can get behind that.
If you like the "Deftones on crack" sound, check out Loathe.
Car bomb is...... tha bomb
Your face is like every musicians face their first time hearing car bomb. Trying to count it, comprehend it, accepting it. It’s an amazing experience.
Man, I love this song...and loved the commentary. It’s always cool when people appreciate what they’re doing, since the experimental elements can throw a lot of people off. Some fun ones to react to would be Constant Sleep from the same album, or one of Xoxoy or Hela from their newest album.
Very surprising to see you react to Car Bomb. Very amazing band, and tragically underrated...
The way they layer their individual tracks and insert numerous other sounds and tones, to create a powerful wall
of sound is mesmerizing! The offbeat, odd time signatures mixed with ethereal harmonies and melodies, in a more traditional signature, is a fantastic recipe! Pure ear candy for musicians for sure! Elliot Hoffman is the drummer, and has inspired my playing immensely!!!
amazing band from NY, used to be called Neck. Waaaaay ahead of their time!
No mention of Spooge ? Lol Elliot's band before Carbomb
Super stoked you got some Car Bomb into the mix!! When you hit 100k, the epic Ants of the Sky by Between the Buried and Me would be quite fitting for such a milestone!!
Car Bomb has been one of m favorite bands when I heard the demos before Centralia Came out and when I came out and then know coming from My home City/State it even got me more stoked. then dived deeper into their earlier projects (Spooge,Neck) being a drummer I had to know who was their drummer was. Elliot Hoffman has to be one of the GOATS in drumming, then finding out they don't play with a click track. Which I played with no click with my bands because we liked the feel more than trying to keep time. Especially when playing amazing mind fugg music like CB. This was like if Dillinger and Meshuggah had a baby and that's what made me want to learn every album to get my drumming more like Elliot's style which I was already playing Chris Pennie and Thomas Haake parts. Same feeling when I heard Between the buried and Me and AAL for the first time. The 90s & early 2000s is where all this amazing music came from I'm glad to not only witness it but to be apart of it as well!
Other songs of GREAT note by Car Bomb:
Secrets Within
Nonagon (both songs are right before Gratitude on the album Meta)
Spirit of Poison
HeLa
...thanks for deconstructing these AMAZING guys!!!
Love Nonagon, great track
@@vanillasky9699 I just now edited in Secrets Within lol
Dissect Yourself with the video is a short but sweet mindblower !!!
Scattered sprites by car bomb is also phenomenal so I’d love you to check that song out aswell, it’s off of their latest album Mordial. Gratitude is off of their 2016 release meta, they released 2 more albums before that called 'w^w^^w^w' and centralia. Super cool band unlike many other matches bands like the Dillinger escape plan or The number 12 looks like you, but still close to their feel. Definitely check more of their stuff out. Also check out The Dillinger escape plan „Farewell, Mona Lisa“ and the number twelve looks like you „Ruin the smile“
Fleshgod Apocalypse has quite a few songs worth checking out. "And the Vulture Beholds" is a personal favorite, but any of their singles would be cool to see in here 😁
Thank you for doing this one; these guys are one of the best bands going right now! They are extremely dynamic in their songwriting; if you do another one I would steer you toward Vague Skies or HeLa off the Mordial album (their most recent one). Also, if you search for “Greg Kubacki Namm 2020” you will find some videos of him doing a play through at the Fortin Amps booth last year and it will highlight his ridiculous setup and how he makes all the strange noises he does. He’s the only guitarist in the band, btw; they’re a 4-piece.
Useless context, but the album this song is from (Meta) was released in 2016, the third in their discography. It's preceded by w^w^^w^w or "waveform" (2012) and Centralia (2007), followed by Mordial (2019)
There's actually four people in this band!
The band do not call it Waveform.
They only acknowledge that other people do.
They call it w click w click click w click w.
@@Thefractalillusion Hence why I included it in quotes as an unofficial name...
If I was to refer to the album verbally, should I be expected to say that every time, or would it be easier to just say "waveform" after establishing that it refers to that album?

as a long time carbomb fan who has listened to their latest 2 albums religiously for years at this point its always nice to see peoples first reaction to this fantastic band. theyre absolutely unique and their songs are insanely well thought through. i had the pleasure to watch and film Elliot at Euroblast 2018 from the backstage (you can find that video here on youtube). Truely one of the most mindboggeling display of talent ive ever seen.
dissect yourself is another great one from them
Hey, man! I think you could totally appreciate reacting to even more of this band. My suggestion is one of their singles from their latest album - "Dissect Yourself". That song is a doozey :D
Greg is a crazy guitar player! He uses axe fx for most of his tone. He has built a couple homemade expression pedals that he uses to "hack" the axefx to create just incredible effects. He uses a tons of pitch shifting and ringmod to achieve most of his tone. In interviews I've heard him talk about using the axefx an actual instrument so it's practically an extension of his guitar.
Their drummer Co-Owns Silver Cord Studio, and Joe Duplantier produced this album.
Also, most people don't notice the pitch shifting that Car Bomb does, props to you.
Threshold of Transformation By ISIS and Cygnus by Cult of Luna&Julie Christmas ,,,dying to see you react to those
Yeah any cult of luna tbf. Would love something off ADTFf, maybe lights on the hill
Yeah, love both these bands, only just recently lisented to the Julie Christmas collaboration and love the whole thing
YES! You reacted to Car Bomb! I suggested another song called Secrets Within on a couple of videos, but am happy to see you do Gratitude! I'm glad you got to experience this band and explore heavy technical music that showcases serious musicianship and has bizarre compositions. Thank you for reacting to Car Bomb! \m/,

i can recommend anything from "haken" but you can start with: "celestial elixir" / "Pareidolia" / "Cockroach King" / "The Point of No Return" / "Nil by mouth" and all the other songs! ^^
Haken is definitely at the top of the Prog rock scene, IMO. I would love to see him react to "Cockroach King, so much cool stuff going on.
I cannot believe he hasn't done Haken yet! He's got SO many good bands covered here, but man Haken is an absolutely MASSIVE band in this scene...
I honestly think Atlas Stone is an excellent intro to their total sound. Off the newer stuff, I'd love to hear him break down Carousel.
Celestial Elixer would be a dream. I'd pay money to see him do that one!
haken is my all time favorite prog band, i love the transition from (Enter the 5th Dimension) / Aquarius to Virus, every Album is like another genre but you hear always that the sound is the haken formular.
I seriously recommend "the seconds" by this band. It's a lot less accessible but it's super cool. Tons of rhythmic originality. Nice video man! 🤘
Best way to cure a hangover is listening to some metal with Geebz! Been waiting for this one for a long time, too. I also gotta recommend Constant Sleep and Scattered Sprites by these guys, but just about all of their discography is mind-blowing.
Meta is one of the greatest albums of the 2010s and Elliot Hoffman is the best drummer in metal right now. Unbelievable band
Oh man! I am suuuper stoked you did a reaction to Car Bomb! These guys are new to me, but im completely hooked. It was really fun to watch you try and figure out what was really going on. I hope you consider listening to more of them, plus maybe, just maybe doing a reaction to after the burial. Have a great day brother, can't wait to listen to you talk story again.
I heard in an interview with Elliot Hoffman (Drummer) that the band don´t play with a click-track. makes the band even more impressive. Blackend Battery, Vaque Skies and the whole Album namend w^w^^w^w are so full of weird time signatures... 25/16, 19/16, 9/8.... etc. they modulade it to sound like its going slower and faster, messing with my head. Bad Grammar and tense are there on purpose!
this is one of their tamest songs
i love your fucking videos man you really get into the heavier weirder stuff and your reactions are great
Don't know if you are aware. But the web site metal Injection shared one of your tool reactions.
There it is! I'm glad we got car bomb. I hate to be that guy who just throws out suggestions like an entitled jukebox user, but I just remembered a band/song and I'm surprised I haven't commented this yet; Hopesfall - End Of An Era. That song is one of the most beautiful, heavy, emotional, powerful, inspirational songs I've ever heard and has been a great influence on my own guitar compositions. Not to mention the lyrics are moving as well.
I really appreciate this reaction/breakdown. 👍
Just politely recommending CHEVELLE. New release "Self Destructor" from their soon-to-be released album. Great band of brothers that's been around for over 20 years and in interviews are about the nicest guys around. Just good solid smart rock! I believe you'll be pleased at the art they put together.

Car Bomb is a very interesting band, one of the best representant of the Mathcore scene along with The Dillinger Escape Plan (another band that you should definitely check out).
I don't know why but this song gives me a Deftones vibe and that was something I would not expect from them.

Not only is this a great band. But this is one of my favorite songs by them. Good choice
They're like if The Mercury Tree had a lot of hardcore influence. It's addictive.
These guys are amazing. From what I have read they all have tech jobs that allow them to fund their music without alot of label support. They build their own microphones and such from scratch. Great video!

I think the first time I ever listened to Car bomb, I probably said "wow, this is sick" too.
Geebz, you're the man! Very full of gratitude (tee hee) for this reaction. Mahalo!
A year late but very cool to hear your insights into this song! Gratitude may be my favorite song by them, so it's a fantastic first listen!
While I'd say it is a bit less accessible overall, their album w^w^^w^w (the name is a transliteration of the opening riff of the first song) is an absolute masterclass in rhythmic motif work, and really rewards close/repeated listenings. Also builds up to some very intense proggy moments like you get in Gratitude. If you haven't given it a shot yet, I highly recommend it!
:OOO
car bomb is one of my favorite bands ever! this is a very interesting breakdown, its great to see people of all generations can enjoy talent like this! On an unrelated note, I'd really like to see a breakdown of a daughters song, maybe Satan in the Wait, or Long Road No Turns; they have an extremely interesting and very unique style of instrumentation that is a little hard for me to understand... in general, i think you'd very much enjoy their album "You Won't Get What You Want"
Daughters is amazing! Glad to see another fan here. I love their newer music, but my personal favorite of theirs is still Hell Songs.
They play live without a click! If you’re interested in their early days there’s a good documentary on UA-cam shot by the dudes themselves “why you do this”. Gratitude will have an entire different level of meaning after watching it. Bless up!

Hey, mom. Hey, dad!
Don't forget Elliot's band "Spooge" before Carbomb. Very Bunglei-ish
I wasn't expecting you to get to Car Bomb this soon haha. This is from their 2nd newest album if I remember correctly. So kind of from the middle of the discography, but that not necessarily a bad thing, because this is their best album IMO.
For next song, I'd recommend "Sets". That one really messes with time right from the start.
If you'd like to check out another band with a similar sound, then Frontierer is what you need.
Still here! Another great review, and still hoping for some Faith No More reactions.
Car Bomb are the shit. Watch the documentary called "why you do this". It's here on UA-cam. I found it super interesting hearing about the struggles they had compared to similar bands big and small. Also how compelled they are to still make music even though it's so niche and financially straining.
Also it's worth noting they don't use any click tracks at all, live or in studio!
