It wouldn't be something much people would appreciate, since i see a lot of people fail to see what is the actual meaning deep within the music, they just notice whats on the surface if you know what i mean
@@victors.6255 Daniel Liljekvist? He kicked some serious ass in Subdive. Check out their song "Gasoline". It's not like Katatonia, but pretty groovy. If I'm remembering correctly I think both of the Norrman's are in that band too. I don't think they ever made it very big.
The thing that really jumps out about this, with this drummer who has since left the group, is how deep his grooves are and how unique his fills are, unlike anyone else's I have heard. The devil is in the details on this drummer's deep grooves and his fills...simply amazing!
Such an underrated band. Not that they are small time, but they are so unique, and make such amazing artistic choices in their writing. They really deserve to be way bigger than they are.
I feel the same way as you, I've followed Katatonia since the beginning, seen all the changes and they always nail it with the changes they make, I don't know many bands that can do that and still sound great, I still go back to their old stuff depending on my mood
This is a really interesting band: They started by being an extreme metal band playing Death Doom metal (A version of Death metal that has a strong emphasis on very slow tempos and repetition to create a lot of atmosphere while still having very aggressive distorted sound and vocals) but their career took a turn for a more moderate style of metal driven by clean vocals and diving deeper into the atmospheric elements with a very tasteful use of electronics and production. Very unlike most other metal bands but not quite like most Rock or Prog acts either.
I love Katatonia, and this track is up there for fav Katatonia songs. Doom metal sort of predates death metal, so I would describe death-doom as doom metal with harsh vocals. Death-doom is excellent and has many awesome bands. Another band that followed a similar progression to Katatonia, in terms of genre shifting is Anathema.
I've been listening to one or two of their newer albums for years, so when I went back and listened to the rest of their work chronologically, I was absolutely shocked at where they started. I haven't heard many bands with an evolution like that.
Jonas Renkse is an absolute genius. A drummer that became a lead singer/screamer (who also plays bass in the heaviest band on the planet - Bloodbath) who then came into singing clean vocals so as to not completely lose his voice. He also writes almost all of Katatonia's music currently and plays most of the instruments in the studio for demos (keyboards, guitar, drums, bass). He may have the most deeply emotive voice in rock/metal at this point. When he sings you feel an intense ache of sadness to the marrow. Don't even get me started on his lyrics... Only through deep humility and hard life work can anyone arrive at art on this level.
A reactor that did the RIGHT starter song for a change...This is where you begin with Katatonia, the rest is all up to you. Greatest band on earth (in my opinion)
Agreed. Probably my (current) favorite Katatonia song, though Inheritance would have also been a great choice. They have such a wide range of songs, even within an album, that I have trouble picking favorites.
Haha, I came to the comments to say that while Agalloch probably haven't got any requests on the channel, he'd probably enjoy it as a composer, as they have an interesting "style", and should check it out sometime, in his own time or whatever... I'm pleasantly surprised. Take my upvote, maybe he actually checks it out sometime, I didn't expect him to do Katatonia either.
@@maurobilotti I think music is emotion, katatonia are masters of it, but I think music is not a competition between who is more complex or who has it longer...that's why I say it's time to listen to Soen...
Katatonia have some of the best musical economy in the business. Renske and Nystrom just have this knack for never letting a phrasing overstay it's welcome, nor depart too soon. The manner in which they shift accents and timing around comes off as effortless, and even after 2 decades of listening to them avidly, I still find myself catching little nuances I missed before. They always manage to trick your expectations, and ear, in the most delightful of ways, often resolving melodies in unanticipated fashion, from one album to the next, one song to the next, one note to the next. Much like my sentiments for Opeth, I find myself honored to bear witness and feel like a part of their continual evolution. Katatonia is musical integrity/sincerety of the highest order. Your really breaking down some great songs from somene great bands man, and doing so in very interesting detail, so hats off to you man. If anyone out there is doing it better than you, I haven't seen em yet.
holy shit, ive watched a ton of your videos over the whole covid lockdown thing and i never expected to see katatonia on here. insanely underrated band.
I recently discovered the band Katatonia and I can't stop listening to them. They definitely have their own sound. The tasteful playing, interesting melodies, great vocals and harmonies, and surprising rhythms that keep you on your toes. Great stuff!
Katatonia In The White and My twin are best. All The great Cold Distance is great. You can also listen to some Paradise Lost and Hanging Garden songs. They may have similar traits
Absolutely one of my favorite bands and perhaps one of the best of all time in my opinion. Night is the New Day is one of my top 3 favorite albums and i enjoy every one of their albums so much.
Im so glad you picked up on the vocals coming in at an unusual time. Katatonia does that a lot! The vocals are layed over the songs so dynamically. They're incredible.
I very rarely comment on videos but here it is - love your channel so far and LOVE Katatonia. Please give them another spin soon. Cheers and keep rolling!
I can listen to Katatonia in every mood. They may be very melancholic but they fill me up with a sense of hope, lyrically it is so positive, musically it is packed in melancholy. Anathema too, since "We're here because we're here" they are positive lyrically too. But I understand your opinions about melancholy lets make you feel sad.
Katatonia has a really diverse catalogue and their current sound stands out quite nicely. It's also interesting how their sound has evolved and "matured" over the years. And appreciate how you spoke about the vocals. Jonas has some of the best vocal phrasings I've ever heard.
Fucking great video mate, never usually comment on stuff but first time watching your channel, that first 5 mins brought me to tears genuine! Emotional wreck at the moment and somehow Katatonia push those buttons! That bass and kick….. ooofff! Keep up the good work, will watch more
This was Awesome!!! I've only learned about Katatonia in the last 3yrs, from My Twin sister... @ 10m35s Absolutely Loved you're "I know most of you just went into labor" comment.... having yelled at the screen often, for that very thing, it was Soooo much fun being with You this time as a "first-time listener" for this song, didn't hurt my feelings at all, and understood your stop. Love You're stuff Sooo Much!!! Sorry had to edit, Soil's Song, My Twin, In The White, Deliberation... well "Great Cold Distance" is so far my favorite album....
Man, so glad u found Katatonia. They have a huge treasure chest packed with gems of songs. You should also check out the swedish band LETTERS FROM THE COLONY!!
YESSS! Katatonia rules!I kinda love how the signature sound of the band came about more or less by accident. They started out as more of a death metal band, and singer Jonas Renkse used to do death growls, but he started to have problems with his vocal cords and the story goes that a doctor basically told him that if he kept singing that way, he would eventually lose his voice completely. So he switched to doing clean vocals, which in turn changed the band's sound - and thank heavens for that.
I have heard that story before and wondered if it was true. I appreciate every iteration of this band. I dig the clean vocals. Glad they were able to continue and the change it brought to their music. Everything happens for a reason I guess.
One of my favorite band along with Antimatter, still do not accept that the ignorant market has kept them so underrated ... Jonas Renkse is a legit poet! His lyrics goes through your brain straight to your heart... Let me put it this way, his music is made with sutil and high vibration that only awake beings can hear because is our inner self who does it...majority, sad to say it but still is sleeping...😢 I dare to say that 99% of their music the last 20 years has been pure poetry with underline messages... Now is the time to wake up ❤
OLD COMPOSER, love your reactions, it seems to me so sincere, i think you can enjoy metal as well, i'm happy when people find the beauty in xtreme music 🤘 stay safe my friend
If I had to HIGHLY recommend a band to react/listen to, it would be FAIR TO MIDLAND. They're unfortunately busted up, but are THE most unique and awesome band that I've ever listened to.
I think it's cool that you key in on what all these great bass players do for the music you're listening to. It's nice to give them some recognition because they really do tie it all together. Thanks for your work to make these videos happen. Much appreciated!
One of my all time favorite bands, especially the period until the full lenght album "The Great Cold Distance" (2006). "My twin" - ah, such are good memories... :)
The video I found your channel by, think you're due for some more Katatonia ;) They did an acoustic version of this entire album where they took the original stems for the vocals and synths, and then replaced the drums, electric bass, and distorted guitars with acoustic guitars and bass, piano, and some more strings. Imo that version of the album is even better, the atmosphere it carries is just phenomenal. I'd love to see you react to the "acoustic" version from Dethroned and Uncrowned ", and see you compare the two tracks and the changes. Awwwright
Fun Fact: Jonas Renkse (Katatonia's singer) and Anders Nyström (guitar and main songwriter) are members of a death metal supergroup called Bloodbath along with Martin Axenrot, Opeth's current drummer. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth's singer and songwriter) was a member of the band as well, but left several years ago.
Eleven albums in, and they always evolve without losing the sound makes them unique, and sets them apart. True art. Musically, I would hate to follow them onstage. Best of luck suckers!!!
As a Swede, I'm blown away that you did a reaction to this underappreciated band. You do NOT bla bla bla too much. I love your input on details I haven't thought about, even though I've heard the songs hundreds of times. ;) Would love if you did Soen soon. Either Lotus if you're in a bluesy mode, or Dissident from their latest album.
Oh nice... great to see Katatonia getting some love. I just love the odd-metal-ambient-harmonies from these guys. If you like what you hear, be sure to check out their 'acoustic' album called Sanctitude. Just amazing 'unplugged' arrangements of many of their coolest songs.
This is such a great band. I loved watching your face as you react to the different parts. I imagine it's how I look when I'm listening to them and get lost in the music!
They were very old when they made this album , they had so many changes through their career ..you should try something from "the great cold distance" album , maybe "July" would be cool .
Nice pick bro. Katatonia is criminally underrated. Great band. Spot on with your assessment. His vocals are deceptively tricky with the phrasing and melodies/ harmonies. Great rhythm section and guitarwork. So smart and creative... those two elements are not always married seamlessly together but they seem to be naturals at it. It all just feels right and flows smoothly.
Favorite band of all time. And their sound has really evolved over the years. If you are open to experiencing a different side of them, definitely recommend checking out 'Brave' - it has Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt on the vocals and it's brutal and heart-wrenchingly beautiful at the same time. I know that you don't look at the lyrics when reacting (understandable), but with Katatonia, that's the major takeaways for anyone who loves this band to death, besides Jonas's vocals i.e. A natural progression from here would be Anathema, Riverside, Lunatic Soul, or Pineapple Thief. I'd recommend the following tracks: Anathema - Are you there? (The story behind the song is truly heartbreaking) or One last goodbye (for the amazing guitar solo) Riverside - Second life syndrome Lunatic Soul - Lunatic Soul Pineapple thief - The final thing on my mind. Thanks again. Solid reaction!
Still here! And so glad you got around to Katatonia. One of my favorites for sure. Another super interesting track from them to check would be Old Heart Falls.
Katatonia is my favorite band of all time. Their older stuff focused on atmosphere and simplicity while their newer stuff is more prog driven. Great reaction, this song gets me untied, especially at the very end.
I love watching your videos, it gives me the feeling of listening to something for the first time again! Katatonia is certainly one of my all time favorites and I even have Lethean's chorus tattooed on my arm. Thank you so much for giving me a second first listening on it!
A band I feel is very underrated, don't see many people reacting to them.

Anathema - Are you there? (The story behind the song is truly heartbreaking) or One last goodbye (for the amazing guitar solo)
Riverside - Second life syndrome
Lunatic Soul - Lunatic Soul
Pineapple thief - The final thing on my mind.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaan you need to do more Katatonia!
I really enjoy your work brother. Great job!
This video alone deserves a subscribe to your channel.
I love watching your videos, it gives me the feeling of listening to something for the first time again!
Katatonia is certainly one of my all time favorites and I even have Lethean's chorus tattooed on my arm. Thank you so much for giving me a second first listening on it!
In my top 5. I love their music.
