Painting the Farrier F25C trimaran with Alexseal TopCoat 501, rolling and no tipping!

  • We're big fans of Alexseal's "No Tip" additive which does the bubble-popping job for you. This is a big deal for the solo painter, as no one has to come right behind your roller to do the 'tipping' by brush. We used 4" high density foam rollers to paint this whole boat, taking three full coats of finish paint (primer job was done in the prior video), with 320 grit sanding in between the coats.

Skipper, super deluxe. Love the paint job. I think it is as good as any pro job I have ever seen. I painted a 28 foot by tip and roll about 4 years ago and was super happy with the results. Now the Alexseal rules the DIY projects. That additive is super secret weapon. Happy for you. So much hard work goes into the repairs and alterations. They say the prep work is 70 percent of the job ...the painting is the easy part. Do you agree?

Thanks! I’d go up to 80 or 90% prep. It’s so challenging to get a truly clean paintable surface. But you have to get there if you want real paint ;)

@@alansmith2203 next week! Going to install a new Raymarine instrument system and do some rigging upgrades. Spent 15 days working on her in November, including all new topsides paint and she looks great. Getting ready to launch and cruise in February.

I'm guessing you don't have much problems with insects. I'd of thought you'd have a good many insects stuck in your beautiful new paint job. But she looks incredible! ❤

Ah yes, the bugs! A bunch of them landed right after the 2nd coat, but got sanded off. Got pretty lucky the next day with very few in final coat. I’ll polish them out when we do the protective waxing job soon.

It wasnt reduced enough on the 1st coat, do a 2:1:1 mix and add 1% rolling additive and add a splash of reducer to the tray intermittently.
I only use West System 800 foam roller on a 230 (or 7") frame, removing nearly all the paint off it before rolling out...they give a killer gloss finish and coat very evenly. Ive tried all the small roller options and nothing comes close to West System for quality of finish.
The finish on my Roberts 45' is world class and given im not a painter is a testament to the Alexseal product.

Doc, are you talking their yellow epoxy rollers? They are so thin - interesting they rocked your paint too. Will try that maybe on the rudder & dagger paint I’ll do soon.

WOW! We spent months on our tri painting in 2-pack then sanding down and top polishing… this looks SO much better and quicker! Thanks for talking through the process as well. How does the Alexseal wear? Is it as tough as 2-pack?

Hi. I don’t know of “ two pack”. Alexseal is a two part, linear polyurethane. It’s a similar system to Awlgrip and Interlux Perfection. But those other two still require tipping. Alexseal lasts just like the other LPU paints, ie very well.

The beauty of using Alexseal is the clear is throughout the entire film thickness, so if any repairs are required they can be feathered in and polished properly.
I know of no other topside paint in the market that can be repaired like this if its required.
Ive not polished, cut, or put any other compound on Alexseal other that wax and still has that amazing "wet look" glossy shine

Wow, Greg! This looks amazing! Do you know how many total hours you spent on the prep and paint? Exclude the time fixing and updating carbon pieces, just the paint job? I wonder what a paint job like this would cost from a professional shop. Well done!

Hi Mike. Starting with sanding back the failed paint, I’d say there was about 50 hours in prep & primer work. The topcoat paint was about 30 hours including the two full sandings between coats. I think it was two solid weeks of labor that I spread over a month. Imagine it would have been $20k at a yard. But let’s take that ? To the Fboat forum… posting in a bit.

Your $20k is on the money, i was quoted $15k if i supplied the paint.
The marina i did mine at had a pro spray shop onsite and i ended up doing my gloss application over a long weekend applying paint just after sunrise (painting after 12 noon isnt advisable) each day.
On the Tuesday morning the proprietor of the spray shop called me as he could see the incredible finish. He said someone will probably complain about me "spraying" my boat in the open air. I told him its rolled and he didnt believe me as he said he had gone over to the boat and felt how even and eye popping glossy it was.
He said in 30 years of painting yachts he has never seen a finish like that.

Doc, any issues with debris/bugs in your final finish? That’s the bummer of doing this outdoors. I have some dead bugs and don’t k know the best way to polish out the Alexseal. Have you done it successfully, and how? Thx
