Great reel! Been fishing the 2500 Spinfisher VI for a few weeks now inshore and offshore and it’s handled plenty of snook, and jacks with ease aswell as light tackle Bonita offshore. Extremely happy with it!
Also if you don’t like the handle the spinfisher VI comes with, the slammer 3 ball handles are a direct match for the 3500 size and up. I saw somebody that had them on all his spinfisher VI’s and said they screwed in perfectly. If you wanted to go that route.

My first UA-cam feedback, great intro and thanks for your help and testing time. Just retired and have some medical issues and hope to get back into fishing after this winter.

Adding Penn to the shopping list...great job once again, I recall the shade you threw on Penn over the years (for good reason), glad to see they got their act together and really shows you go wherever the evidence leads you when it comes to gear.
Thank you, Tackle Advisors! Not just for this video, but all of them. I know it must take forever to film every single one. I’ve used and had great appreciation for high quality tackle for years now, but I’ve never been one to get into the inside of a reel. You’ve helped give me more of an appreciation for gear I do use.
Thank You for the Great review. I have been using cheap spinning reels for some time. Last year, I started getting some better rods. I have been looking at Penn reels and never seen such an honest review as yours. I have only used spinning reels and am now looking at maybe going to bait caster. But I am 61, so I am trying to teach this old dog new tricks. I fish mostly freshwater, but I am buying a new kayak in the spring, that is made to go in shore and I am looking forward to salt water fishing. Thanks again.

Hey dude, I’m curious about how you think the Daiwa BG compares to the Spinfisher VI, specifically the 3000 and 3500 models. I need a pair of reels to use with 10lb mono for bobbers, bottom fishing rigs, and various live bait setups. All fresh water. They’ll be paired with a 7’ medium-light surf rod for shore fishing. Durability? Power? Longevity? Value? $120 vs $160? Thanks!

Thanks man! That'll be a perfect reel...The 4500 was a bit heavy in elias's opinion for what he was using it for. It's really cool how you saltwater yakkers can get away with lighte gear since you pull yourself to the fish as much as they pull you :)
I am not a Penn fan, but after this honest and very detailed review, I thing this reel it's gonna be my next Christmas present for myself. Thanks again Tackle Advisors! Pura vida!

Love the detailed info. And I understand when u get side tracked on another topic that you're passionate about. Always look at your reviews before I buy a reel.
Great video! I recently purchased the Spinfisher VI 8500LL and can’t wait to try it. I did notice, however, that the resistance using the live liner function is a bit restrictive, even on the setting of least resistance. Compared to the other baitrunners I’ve used, this doesn’t feel like it will let a sardine run freely enough to pull line off of the spool. Is there a way to reduce the resistance when using the live liner so the bait can run?
Great review as always. These are so relaxing. Kind of like the Bob Ross of reel reviews. And over here, we have a happy little drag next to a happy little seal. Great stuff!
Thanks for the information, enjoyed your style, as usual. I'm wondering if its worth upgrading from my Spinfisher V to the VI for the surf. That hydrophobic "seal" seems to be the only difference and that seems a bit of a gimic to me. The SSV does have the Slammer drag over the SSVI but that also is a bit of non-difference as you hinted. If you have time, please tell me what you think SSV to SSVI upgrade or not. Thanks.
Gearing upgrade is big. Seal at the main shaft is as well and the top only drag means lighter minimum drag setting which is nice for bait fishing when in a rod holder
Nice review. It was very thorough and in depth. I always check your channel first before I buy a reel. Penn reels have definitely improved over the past few years. May have to pick up this reel or the Slammer III.

Exceptional review! Very detailed..... Can you do a video comparing the new Spinfisher VI to the older Spinfisher V? Naming all the differences and upgrades made to the new Spinfisher VI.
Hello my name is Juan Enrique I live in los cabos, I have a question that I want to buy a PENN® SPINFISHER® VI LONG CAST SPINNING reel but I don't know which model to grab between, 5500, 6500, 7500, my question would be which is the fastest and smoothest and can be combined with a 13 foot rod, for jogging fishing
Excellent video. I don't launch from the beach, mostly inshore in Texas, and have had serious reel issues. I really didn't know much about reels at first, but I learned quickly as mine kept dying. One - bait casters in a saltwater bay on a yak is just asking for trouble, period. Fishing mostly paddle tails on 1/8th oz. jig heads for slot reds, there's nothing you can't do with a 2500 sized spinning reel. This is where I start to get worried about a reel like the Spinfisher VI. It weighs 72.5% more than the most comfortable reel I fish, a Tatula LT, and yes, I bought it before I found your videos (which I just can't stop watching). So, how did I go from breaking reels to using a basically freshwater spinner? I just learned how to take better care of my reels. I run a forward mounted rod holder so that I never have to put my rods on the floor of the yak where they would often get some non-incidental saltwater baths. I keep my spare rods behind me in rod holders on my milk crate rather than on my side mounted rod holders where they can get splashed. I have probably 15 to 20 trips and a few hundred pounds of redfish on the Tatula, and it shows no signs of being worse for the effort. So, for how Elias is fishing, the spin fisher seems like a good bet, but for constantly jigging and paddling, a light freshwater spinner that is well managed for inshore stuff where you aren't trolling for king mackerel or running live/dead bait for bull reds, will keep you fresh quite a bit longer. On the yak, and when seated, your arm position is quite a bit less ideal than from the river bank or on a boat. It's more like surf fishing waist deep. Your hands are right below chest height, and a light setup is very valuable. So, ya, there are varieties of kayak fishing, and I can totally see that this Spinfisher would be great for wet situations where you weren't doing a ton of jigging, but the way I fish, I want to stay light. Anyway, great channel, I've been watching while I have rebuilt roughly 30 reels while recovering from a back injury. Keep it up, I may do some of these myself. Taking my very early Calais 200 from stuck and corroded to working with Bantam1 to get some very rare parts and having it run so that it is noticeably more smooth than my new Curado DC is my best effort so far.
You bring up great points. And it's something I considered when sending him reels. He's been fishing a fuego lt and it died (i have it in a box unopened as of yet...and it lasted I belive 5 months which is pretty good...I sent him a smaller exceler to see if we could push the limits and it died in a week lmao. But it did catch some sweet fish. It's good to see the non sealed version of the ballistic is still going strong..one of the things I did to the exceler as part of an experiment was grease the snot out of all the entry points to see if it lasted longer than the fuego with mag seal......Too bad it couldn't hold up to the fish....I'm ccurious as to how it died. They have a bit more flex in the stem than the tatula and ballistic. But the frames seem to keep everything where it needs to be. Please do! UA-cam needs more people who know the gear inside and out talking about it. Good luck with the back.
This past December I walked into my local tackle store and sampled different models of the Penn Spinfisher VI and everyone of them was as smooth as the Daiwa BG 4000 & 4500 reels that I had purchased this past spring, so I decided to buy the Spinfisher 4500 VI Bailess model for my 8.5 foot Lamiglas stick I spooled it with 20 pound braid and the reel is surprisingly smooth and line lay is exceptional. I've had a lot of gear meshing problems in the pasted 7 years with Penn spinning reels that I had bought on line with ether CNC or Zink alloy main & Brass pinion gears where I had to open up the reels and re shim and replace the gears myself to make the reels run with a smooth retrieve, I guess I got burned a few times buying reels on line thinking I was saving a few dollars but I wound up with a few lemon's instead. { I don't know what Penn did with these new and improved CNC gears that they installed into the new improved Spinfisher VI series, but all I can tell you is that these reels are smooth, all I can say is I think Penn's finally put out a very well crafted spinning reel - NOW ALL I NEED IS TO CATCH SOME FISH !!!! } Winter - Winter Go Away - April & May Can't Get Here Any Faster !!!
After watching all of Elias V fishing's videos killing reds and your comprehensive break down I think I'm pretty much sold. I think the live line version would be perfect for someone like me who does a lot of shore based live bait fishing. Thank you for these very detailed reviews.
I was looking at a Shimano Baitrunner D and the Penn Sprinfisher VI LL, After watching this video I have a good idea what your answer is going to be but it would be nice if other people could chime in also. Obviously, the Penn has a hefty drag advantage and line capacity but I'm curious to hear; Which one would you buy and why if you have the time?
I just watched an hour qbout a reel i probally wont buy since i have no ocean or similar even near. Information is key so no harm done. Really do enjoy your videos, very informative and homest as far as i can tell. Cheers
Thanks Calli..I've battled shills and undisclosed pro staffers on forums for years.....It's shocking how nobody nowadays can tell the friggin truth about a mass produced widget in a cardboard box lol......
He went from the Denny Snook's Saltiga to the Gosa's drags locking up. There has been occasional fisherman claiming that their Gosa's drag has locked up but there's no way the 2020 Saltiga's drag would lock up. It was no doubt an older model.
Sooooo, should I buy this reel or the bg? The biggest I’ll catch on this bad boy is Spanish mackerel and MAYBE some tiny sharks or rays less than 10 kilos. Possibly some snapper, emperors and sweet lips. I’m aiming for a 3000 size bg or a 3500 spinfisher vi
Hey, in the normal non longcast Spinfisher Vi models: 5500 and below have ali gears, whereas the 6500 and above have brass main gears. Do you know if this is the same for the longcast models? i.e. does the 5500 LC have an ali main gear and the 6500/7500 LC have brass, also? I can't find any info about this on the LC models. Here in NZ, we get massive sharks and Kingfish off the beach/rocks, and I would rather have the brass gear. Any ideas mate? Ta muchly, Dave down under
Ok thanks ! Do you recommend d washing down the penn spin-fish 6 With fresh water after saltwater use? Is washing it within freshwater the best and simplest way to keep it clean Thank you!
Curious if the price of this reel doesn't change say it stays around 160 for the 3500/4500 does it fish that much better than a BG to justify the extra 60 bucks for this reel?
It's not that it will fish better than the BG out of the box. But it's like new performance will likely last if exposed to salt. The BG in this vid had a corroded pinion bearing as did a different reel in my maintenance vid. Salt and that area of the reel don't mix wheel in the BG. If you don't get a defective Penn reel it will likely out last the BG as good as the BG is. If it were my money I'd see the extra cost as worth while. After using the larger ballistic if you could swing that... Holy bajeezus is the weight savings huge
Great video.. I do trolling and deadbait fishing with a baitrunner.. would I be able to use the Penn spinfisher VI live line for a decent amount of trolling too? Thanks
Very nice, great for the money. Nice to see at least someone listened and then implemented changes. Nice giveaway as well, should be a great reel for the longterm.
I am considering Battle 3, Spinfisher VI and pairing it with St Croix Priemier 8 ft. MH musky rod, lure rated 1 oz. To 3oz. I prefer throwing inline spinners and bucktails. I would appreciate your feedback.
Can you replace the main gear with a brass gear from the Slammer? Reason why I ask is because I want the long cast spool of the spinfisher otherwise I would just buy a Slammer.
Hi, i fish in the beach i do spinning, with artificials mainly spoons and swimbaits. i use from 15 to 30 pound braid with a heavy leader (for snook and tarpoon) wich reel do you suggest for me, the Penn Spinfisher VI 4500 or the daiwa ballistic 5000? I was thinking to buy the ballsitic 6000 but i think its too slow on the retreive for my type of fishing so i change my preference for the 5000 what is your opinion ? thanks,... continue with youre great work...
I can not get my braided line equally divided on the spool of both of my new penn spinfisher liveliner 2500. Its sitting on it like a chrismas tree. What am i doing wrong? Someone a tip?
Did you adjust the line lay by shimming? If it's stacking too much at the bottom. You need to lower the spool by removing a washer... You should be able to. As I think there are two. You do not want the spool rubbing on bare metal
Well, did shimming the gear farther away from the left sideplate eliminate the geariness? When you pull the handle away, it seems like it carries the main gear with it just enough to pull the teeth away from the pinion to create added space between the teeth enmeshment surfaces, giving it the gear vibe. By screwing the bearings down tighter, it could only add more lateral slop to worsen the gear vibe. To me, it seems like the right balance of shimming between the left and right sides would eliminate the lateral play and brace the main gear by just barely snugging it up to the pinion. Yeah? So, so did Penn ever get back to you about it? Maybe the defect is why it was probably a display model at iCast. --Rich
Hey Tristan. There is flex under load at the the stem. But the internals stay in alignment and the main gear doesn't press away from pinion. I have Elias v fishing's fuego lt that he's been using since may that he killed. Still unopened received it Tuesday. If it lasts for 2 months with him it's considered good at the 99$ price range
@@TackleAdvisors Thanks for the reply man, was going to go for a stradic ci4+ but the daiwa lt series has always caught my attention, especially the freams lt and fuego lt, that being said, the flex in the stem shouldn't really be an issue right, since the main gear alignment isn't affected right?
Great review. I really appreciate your attention to detail. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the Daiwa BG on your Amazon store front. I have the 4500 already and am looking to get the 2500 soon. Thanks again!

can you reccomend a replacement handle/knob for the 6500 liveliner .. i dont like the elbow/link(folding rocker?) joint styled handles. they are only as stable/flush by how tight u have the handle. i see a few aftermarket ones but lots of them have that elbow/link joint. =( ...
Hit that noti bell ladies and gents! Spinfisher looking good, I actually moved away from Penn a couple years ago but might get one and see how I like it on the yak again.
Hi, I see the long cast version has a switch for anti-reverse? I just bought the 8500LL version. Happy so far, but not used to the clicky freespool when in baitrunner mode and the fish is running. All my shimano baitrunners have a smoother spool spin when in br mode. Is this normal do you think? cheers
Will the CNC alloy gear from the VI fit in the older spin fisher V? Are the the same size?... I have a spin fisher V 4500 and want to upgrade to a CNC alloy main gear. Thank you
Can u do a review and disassembly on the penn pursuit 3? Maybe a comparison between the fierce 2? Also are you going to do a disassembly on the battle 2?

Just ordered one...Thank you for your hard work and honesty..
GIDDAY FROM DOWN UNDER MATE! Love your reviews and attention to detail reel breakdowns.
Great vid. Very informative. Is the Daiwa Caldia LT the foreign high speed version of the Ballistic LT? The Caldia has higher gear ratios.
As usual top review. Wish any supplier would supply Penn in Malta. Shimano and Daiwa rule the market here
This past December I walked into my local tackle store and sampled different models of the Penn Spinfisher VI and everyone of them was as smooth as the Daiwa BG 4000 & 4500 reels that I had purchased this past spring, so I decided to buy the Spinfisher 4500 VI Bailess model for my 8.5 foot Lamiglas stick I spooled it with 20 pound braid and the reel is surprisingly smooth and line lay is exceptional.
Yup, yup, and more yup. These reels are definitely different. Noticeably so in feel of retrieve
Happy they finally made a Spinfisher LC
After watching all of Elias V fishing's videos killing reds and your comprehensive break down I think I'm pretty much sold. I think the live line version would be perfect for someone like me who does a lot of shore based live bait fishing. Thank you for these very detailed reviews.
Cool man! He put a pounding on this reel and it took it very well. You're welcome
Great work as always! Don’t stop what you’re doing!
Do you review bait casters as well ? I just preordered a Penn Fathom II casting special its a shot in the dark but I suspect it will last a lifetime
Thanks a lot, your review really helped me make up my mind which one to get. Looking forward getting my first liveliner.
Keep up the great videos!
Awesome video. I changed to 4 new vi reels based on your reviews!
Love all the fresh water reel reviews, and if I ever go saltwater fishing, I know where to go to learn what gear will be the best bang for my buck
Would you recommend a Carbon Shield 6000 or a Spinfisher VI for surfcasting of the south shore LI? Love your videos
He went from the Denny Snook's Saltiga to the Gosa's drags locking up. There has been occasional fisherman claiming that their Gosa's drag has locked up but there's no way the 2020 Saltiga's drag would lock up. It was no doubt an older model.
That Penn took a beating in the beginning. Your videos always help me understand the make up of reels and how quality is determined.
Hey, in
the normal non longcast Spinfisher Vi models: 5500 and below have ali gears,
whereas the 6500 and above have brass main gears. Do you know if this is the
same for the longcast models? i.e. does the 5500 LC have an ali main gear and
the 6500/7500 LC have brass, also? I can't find any info about this on the LC
models. Here in NZ, we get massive sharks and Kingfish off the beach/rocks, and
I would rather have the brass gear. Any ideas mate? Ta muchly, Dave down under
Quality review! Now I need to see more about that Daiwa Ballistic LT!
Holy bajeezus is the weight savings huge
how frequently should a reel be opened and cleaned that's only used for saltwater? Used 3 to 4 times a month
Great video.. I do trolling and deadbait fishing with a baitrunner.. would I be able to use the Penn spinfisher VI live line for a decent amount of trolling too? Thanks
Would you prefer the Spheros SW over this one? Especially when it comes to how good it’s sealed?
Very nice, great for the money. Nice to see at least someone listened and then implemented changes. Nice giveaway as well, should be a great reel for the longterm.
Thanks brotha!
Hi, I have a 13 ft beach caster. What size Vi would you recommend for it? Thank you
I am considering Battle 3, Spinfisher VI and pairing it with St Croix Priemier 8 ft.
@@TackleAdvisors i did removed 2 rubber rings under the spool. It spools up fine now 😊👍
@@TackleAdvisorsi had to remove both of them in order to control the line evenly on the spool. One was not enough. Thanks for the tip 👍
I paid attention to this Review. You answered my question about spinfisher VI to slammer.
Thank you
Well, did shimming the gear farther away from the left sideplate eliminate the geariness? When you pull the handle away, it seems like it carries the main gear with it just enough to pull the teeth away from the pinion to create added space between the teeth enmeshment surfaces, giving it the gear vibe. By screwing the bearings down tighter, it could only add more lateral slop to worsen the gear vibe. To me, it seems like the right balance of shimming between the left and right sides would eliminate the lateral play and brace the main gear by just barely snugging it up to the pinion. Yeah? So, so did Penn ever get back to you about it? Maybe the defect is why it was probably a display model at iCast. --Rich
Great vid man, just wanted to know your opinion on the daiwa fuego lt? Any issues with flex, as I have heard some people saying so.
Hi do you have any idea way penn reels mixing the line every time ?
I have a spinfisher ssv 4500 and shes mixing line every time dosent matter what line i use. I heard olso ather people have same problem .General with penn reels. The reel is nice and strog but with mixing problem its not fun to use it
“Mixing line”? Do you mean wind 💨 knots?
Yes but o don't think it's happening because of wind every time 😀😀
@@cahit1234 Poor aka un-even line lay is the primary cause of most wind 💨 knots aka line mixing! What country do you reside?
Netherland
Fingers crossed for the win! I'm still torn between the SF and the Slammer. I think this will send me to the Slammer. Thanks a bunch.
Any chance you'll do Rod reviews too? I'm looking at buying a new surf rod but don't have any idea what I'm looking at
Tucker Peebles tiralejo’s, carnage 2 are amazing surf rods
can you reccomend a replacement handle/knob for the 6500 liveliner .. i dont like the elbow/link(folding rocker?) joint styled handles. they are only as stable/flush by how tight u have the handle.
i see a few aftermarket ones but lots of them have that elbow/link joint. =( ...
Im not aware of a Penn replacement is a 1 piece
Great Review! Always enjoy your videos. I even use your scobby rig, pocket change rig, and scrappy do rig.
Is that something that is on accident or by default when you pop the reel handle back "in" the reel?
Why reeling my Gosa feels uneven/unbalance n feel vibrating in the bail?
Some gosas had a defect with an unbalanced rotor..... Then there was the issue where some guide layouts didn't play well with the parallel reel foot.
@@TackleAdvisors Thanks! Is DIY fix possible?
Hit that noti bell ladies and gents! Spinfisher looking good, I actually moved away from Penn a couple years ago but might get one and see how I like it on the yak again.
Hi, I see the long cast version has a switch for anti-reverse? I just bought the 8500LL version. Happy so far, but not used to the clicky freespool when in baitrunner mode and the fish is running. All my shimano baitrunners have a smoother spool spin when in br mode. Is this normal do you think? cheers
Could you make a video best reels every $100 up to the van staal-zbass.....even if it's a short one I'd be interested in your choices.
Will the CNC alloy gear from the VI fit in the older spin fisher V? Are the the same size?... I have a spin fisher V 4500 and want to upgrade to a CNC alloy main gear. Thank you
Great review like always! Any chance of getting your hands on a V.Staal VR50 and review it????
Can u do a review and disassembly on the penn pursuit 3? Maybe a comparison between the fierce 2? Also are you going to do a disassembly on the battle 2?
I fuvkning love u and Elias. keep up these collabs, in the meantime ill be picking one of these reels
Which do you prefer the standard Spinfisher VI or Slammer 3 (4500s)? Is line lay as good on newer Slammer 3 as Spinfisher?
Sick review,
I’m new to tackle knowledge/fishing and always go to tackle advisors for info on different reels.
