Replacing Drum Brakes on a 07 GMC Sierra - 07-13 Silverado / Sierra

- In this video I show you how I replaced the drum brake shoes and drums on this 2007 GMC Sierra Z71. I replace the worn out old brake shoes and drums. I show you how to disconnect the emergency brake cable to help make the job go easier by not needing an extra set of hands. There are a few springs to deal with and an adjuster screw. Overall the repair wasn't too difficult. The drums are a bit pricey, but overall, doing the job myself saved money.

This drum brake set up wasn't too complex, which was nice. I tip my hat, GM.
You got yourself a torque wrench my man?
x0xCRUSHERx0x yep
Would’ve appreciated GM if they wouldve just made them disc brakes instead of drum.
GM claims its better for towing. We all know it's because GM is all about profit.
I just came in from doing my ‘08. Couldn’t have done it without this video. Biggest problem for me was that f’ing U-shaped spring
Thank you. My 07 drums finally started to grind after 200k. Guess I will finally do my first set of drum brakes with your help
This video boosted my confidence! I have to do the same job on my 08 sierra, and was daunted at the task because I didn't know what to expect. Seems straight forward. Thanks for the video!
I have the early 2007 4.8 crewcab 2 wheel drive, this is the best video I've seen so far. The last time I put on a set of drum brakes was probably 1980, this video is extremely helpful!
This was super helpful. Help me diagnose and fix the problem. And thanks for believing in your struggle to get the spring and back on, that kept me from giving up. Again thanks for a great video!
Thanks, didn't know the return spring had to be installed in the grove first. Makes the install much easier knowing that.
Overall a good video. Like how you had some trouble getting things back together, made me feel good to see someone else do the same thing I've done. Like the close up camera shots, very helpful. thank you.
Thank you for such an easy to follow vid. You were very thorough!
Cheers
Glad the video helped 👍
Thank you! Great video . Best part was adding in the emergency cable release from under the truck. Helped out alot.
The best how to on replacing drum brakes. Great job
Best video Angle I have seen thank you for being very detailed.
Very well explained and to the point video. Thanks!!
Great video
One thing …..
Disc brakes have no return spring which keeps the pads slightly in contact with the rotor at all times
Drum brakes utilize springs to pull the shoes completely away from the drum when no braking is applied
Adjusting the shoes so they are in contact with the drum even a slight amount causes premature wear and heat from the friction
Adjust the shoes so that there is no contact install the wheel and back up a few times applying the brakes this allows the self adjuster to do it’s job 👍
Bucks are outfitted with a do dat to keep the disc pads off, sorry it's been thirty years since I worked for my brother at the shop, but there is a fitting for that
Sir I thank you for being direct and very helpful and understanding plus slow enough to teach me and that's a miracle. De.pres
Best video I have seen on rear brakes!
Thanks for this How To Video It came in Handy for my 08 GMC.
VERY inormative and to the point. Thanks!
Thanks man this was very helpful
The worst feeling is watching this video 10 times to get an understanding grabbing everything I need for the repair just to realize the shop I dropped the truck off at 1 year ago took my fucking key for the lugs…yay
Excellent close up camera work.
Thank you it is very helpful!
Great job. Keep showing videos
Wow great job on explaining this
Excellent video. You hit the key points that no one else did.
I think we all owe you a six! Thank you sir.
Thanks for making this!
Excellent video
Great video thank you
Best video out there
Great Video very detailed! I will be bringing all my drums to you to beat on..... I think the drums on this newer truck are a lot simpler thank the old ones.... but I haven't looked in a while, I jut remember the spring flying past my face 😂
No need to apologize for having a smart cat.
3 Wheels & A Block we are proud of kitty utilizing her instincts, however we are mostly just feeding the birds. 😂
Sweet lots of help
Love the Jeremiah Johnson clip haha
Great video
Hopefully mine has this style.🤞🏻
Thanks! For 25 bucks replace the actuator and less chance of future issues...
You make that look easy, I'll let someone else do it.
Very Good
Thank you, I found this video very helpful. I just did the brakes one my wife's 2002 Chevy Silverado, 4 wheel disc brakes!!! Now I want to do my 2011 GMC Sierra, I sure wish it had discs on the rear too, but I have to follow what you just did. Thank you for the tip about the emergency brake cable, & about leaving the rotors off both sides until the shoes are adjusted. I wouldn't have thought of that! Great job!
Thank you
Did mine but it sounds like a bus stopping , loud horn type noise. Not a screetch . Any ideas.
Ford has included the seals replacement and discs arguing they were too thin. The seals because they always need to be replaced.
My van has only 103,000 km. Is this always the case?
I'm looking for a part number and what supply store you got it from, for the park brake lever. I see you had a new one. Can you help out? Thanks
Im planning on checking my drum brakes, because my peddle is getting low and hard to stop. My question is if I dont adjust the drum brake tight enough would it self adjust to the proper width?
Doing it now. I F ing hate drum brakes. 2 hours to get the drum off. Now this menagerie of springs.😮 0:27
Left wheel adjusts Clockwise, Right wheel adjusts counter clockwise when looking at the back of the truck
Thanks for the hands on video on this. I have changed my front pads many times but have been hesitant to do the rear drums; mainly because of fear of problems with that E brake cable and spring. You mention to make it easier to disconnect E cable from drivers side. Would that be done after you have disconnected the bullet tip at the shoes? And forgive me, but is there an e cable on both sides that would need to be disconnected under drivers side? Thanks again for straightforward instructional video.
Do you open brake fluid reservoir when doing the shoes?
Is it the same with the 99-06?
I noticed you didn't show the replacement of the parking brake lever.
My adjuster is as short as it could possibly be and the drum still does not fit. Help!
What kind of pliers are those?
did you put the jack under the rear dif? I've never done that always put it on the fame close to the back and the jack stand one side at a time just curious if that's a safe and good method to use gonna do it if so since you lift the whole rear at one time thanks?
Yes it’s perfectly safe to do that way. Just make sure you don’t get the jack cocked on the cover. I have seen a couple guys rip the cover that way beforex
Might be a stupid question, but do you need to put the truck on jacks or can you jack up one wheel at a time?
Best to have the rear end off the ground so you can spin the wheels to adjust the brake pads.
Nice. One of the few if any other vids who show how to get the ebrake cable out of the spring. Plus, he shows the few grease spots before installing the shoes. Can't believe the parts sellers who have vids show none of that. Thanks!
I've never seen any shoes with a big spring like that on. But then again, I've never seen inside a drum on a big old truck before.
Those birds sound like camera shutters
Chemical Spore paparazzi, baby!
What size bolt did you use to separate the drum
m10
3/8-16 works
Smart cat
Please tell me where did you bUy the drums ?
Please tell me
You can get them at 1a auto
What thread size on the bolt to break loose the drum?
Ever find out the answer?
3/8in with 16TPI worked for me, an inch and a half long bolt
M10 x1.5
3/8-16 works.
Did you get a new truck Daninator?
Jeremy Conder No. I wish though. It’s a nice truck. It belongs to my brother-in-law.
The tabs on your jack stands aren't bent in....
that has to be the easiest drum brake job i have ever seen.
James Hall and a GM no less! 😂
Dumb brakes? On a modern truck? 🤦♂️
Chemical Spore I know, right? A Z71 even.
Chemical Spore seriously though, as far as drum brakes go, these are pretty simple in design. I’ve seen much more complicated.
@@TheDaninator lol I know right the worst is the early 90's gm rears on the heavy half tons with 15 springs and cables everywhere 😅 I'm used to heavy trucks with air breaks so anything more than 3 springs I question why
