I've tried watching about five of these videos on rear drum brakes... this is the only one I could watch and actually enjoy. Great video format. This looks to be the easiest drum setup I've ever seen. Now I know what to look for. Thanks
@@backyardchevy328 You are absolutely correct about the parking brake cable! I followed your recommendation to disconnect the cables for both rear wheels at that point beneath the driver's door on the frame. It made it so easy to install both cables into the springs! I had struggled a LOT and got nowhere before that. I was lucky, and had plenty of threads available on that adjustment screw connection point at the frame. I counted 17 exposed threads, unscrewed/loosened it to the point I could get both cables disconnected and later connected again and adjusted back to 17 threads. From there, it was just testing and adjusting! Aside from that huge benefit, the rest of the video was also great. Very detailed, great camera work with great resolution, and great narration. And your cat at the beginning was a nice personal touch. A very fine video!!! Thanks so much!!
Sir- I would pay you for the help! The absolutely best repair video I’ve ever seen. No useless yaking, speeded up video for the slow stuff, and good detail on the hard stuff. The biggest problem I had was putting the emergency brake cables on, but everything else was excellent
@@backyardchevy328 Something that helped me was to hold the front end with some pliers and loosen the nut between the parking brake cables to take the tension off of it. It took a bit more time but made them much easier to deal with.
@@backyardchevy328Sir, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but this is the best instruction on these drum brakes I’ve seen! I have an 05 Z71 with 90k and need to replace the original rear brakes. Great video… clear instructions, no stupid music or useless talk, just the facts! Well done and thank you!

Excellent video my man!!!! The last time I did drum brakes was when I was in college years ago and owned an '84 Mustang. It was back in Michigan during a frigid cold winter and it took me 3 long days! Tonight I did it in a couple of hours on my '06 GMC Sierra in the balmy Las Vegas weather with your video streaming on my laptop......Damn! How times have changed! Thanx again my friend! D. Scott
Thank you🙂 thats awesome! Great job! Yea i cant even imagine having to do brakes in frigid cold weather..lowest temp we get to is probably around 24 degrees
Excellent no nonsense, understandable, detailed video!! Thanks for making this! Whoever did the brakes last did them wrong and this is the only video I found that was short and to the point rather than giving a lot of blah blah blah...
Well done. Going to change the shoes on the wife's S1500 and I wanted to see what the drums look like inside. Haven't done drums in a few years and I'm ready now. Thanks!
Had a terrible time trying to do this on my old Toyota. There seemed to be a lot more hardware involved and I hate brake springs. I’m a diesel mechanic, so I’m not used to tiny brake parts. This seems to be much easier and will hopefully involve less tool-throwing and cursing. 😂 Great video. Very easy to understand. Thanks a million. 🙂
This is the best how to for rear brake shoe replacement on GM trucks that use the horse shoe style brake spring hands down . Great camera work and audio along with step by step procedures with great explanation . You can work on my Colorado anytime . Thank You !
Wish I could give you Ten thumbs up! ALL your videos are concise, informative and easy to understand. Even better than A1-Auto and TRQ! I forgot to take pictures of where the brake retainer spring goes. Duh, kind of self explanatory. The E-brake cable goes behind it, and the retainer goes on that hook part of the back plate.
Thank You for this video. It saved me a lot of headaches trying to figure it out myself. Thanks for taking the time to help other people out. I hope you are rewarded ten times over!
Very thankful for all your Colorado videos ! Great details and torque specs ! All ways of doing it are proper , I wish you had a video for every single part of this truck lol ty
I hope you reply to this! I followed this video step by step and you made it so clear and easy for me. I am grateful! But, I think I increased my “travel” when I brake whilst driving. I’m not sure if this is just how it’s supposed to feel or what. The old shoes and drum were rusted and severely worn. I replaced all hardware pieces expect wheel cylinder. Any guesses why I might have more travel in braking? lol 😂

Thank you🙂 it could be the brakes if the horseshoe spring is damaged or even broken, it wont return the brake shoes to a driving position..but i guess it depends where the lock up feeling is coming from..if it feels like a wheel, rear end or the trans
Hi great video just got my Rear brakes and equalizer fixed very good and on point, the only thing that doesnt work is the E-break I activate it and it the pickup goes back😅 Before putting wheel I made sure E-break worked and held but once I took her for a spin and tried activating it on a hill to park it didn't hold and went backwards 😅any suggestions or opinions on what I might have done wrong?
Lol yea that one horseshoe spring is pretty unique..least it wasnt used for too long i prefer the original style drum brakes with springs retainers and pins
Doing this the 2nd time Sunday the 31st , the drums had formed a lip around the outer diameter and I could not turn the star adjuster to release the tension. Took hours in Texas heat prying them out. This time I removed that clip washer in the middle of the star adjuster and machined a bevel surface on the drum so there will be no ridge to hang up the shoes. I have beveled my older cars drums in the past and never fought them like I did this Canyon.
I have my Colorado jacked up it's a 4wd, and I can spin the right tire and it not in neutral. Is this normal? When I first spend the right tire, the left didn't move a little bit and then it didn't move anymore but in any case, I never saw the shaft spin.
As for the parking brake cable, instead of removing, measure the threads, spray the threads, loosen the nut way back, when finished adjust the cable back to the before measurement. Later on, adjust the nut more if needed. No damage! Solo!
The key to the drum parking brake spring is disconnecting it were the 2 rear cables meet, and then you can pull a mile of slack out, MUCH EASIER THEN HIS WAY.
