    Haul Away, Joe - Lyrics
    1. Hey don't you see that black cloud arising? Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
    Hey don't you see that black cloud arising? Way, haul away, we'll haul away, Joe!
    2. When I was a little boy, and so my mother told me,
    That if I didn't kiss the girls my lips would grow all mouldy.
    3. I sailed the seas for years, I never knew what I was missing,
    But then I set my sails afore the gales and started kissing.
    4. I found myself a Yankee girl who wasn't very civil.
    She dragged me round her chambers, nearly sent me to the divil.
    5. Then I got a London girl who might have been called Daisy.
    I thought I wouldn't like her but she damned near drove me crazy.
    6. I've sailed across the seas, me boys, on ships both neat and handy.
    I've fought, I cursed, I've fainted, been restored with rum and brandy.
    7. Once I was in Ireland, digging turf and tatties.
    Now I'm on a Limejuice ship, hauling on the braces.
    8. Louis was the king of France, before the revolution.
    The people cut his head, and it spoiled his constitution.
    9. Saint Patrick was a gentleman, he came from decent people.
    Then we went to Dublin and he built a church and steeple.
    10. Then he drove the snakes away and drank up all the whisky.
    It made him dance and made him sing and made him free and frisky.
    11. You call yourself a second mate, but you cannot tie a bowline.
    You cannot even stand up straight when the packet gets a-rolling.

    It's crazy how much Sean Dagher has done to spread love for shanties. All my buddies and I can trace our love of them directly to AC4, and we get together every week to sing (2m apart in the forest these days...).
    If any of you get the chance to see him or one of his projects live I strongly recommend it. I saw La Nef in Vancouver last year and it was absolutely incredible.

    • @SeanDagher
      @SeanDagher  3 роки тому +13

      Hi Hugo. Nice to hear from someone who was at that show in Vancouver, which was the last one before the world shut down. It was really incredible for us to get to sing with the huge choir, too.
      I'm glad you've found a style of music that you like and especially one that gets you singing with friends. what a great result.
      I can't take the credit for that, though. I got hired to sing on a gig. The first one I sang on with the guys was AC3, where we were soldiers, sailors, and tavern musicians. The sailor songs proved so popular that Ubisoft made a central focus of Black Flag. I guess if we had done a shitty job on AC3 then they wouldn't have made BF that way, so maybe it is partly because of us. The singers on AC3 were me, Nils Brown, and John Wiens. John didn't do any more after that.
      Thanks for your message. Seán.

      Yeah, I almost left it out because I didn't know how I wanted to pronounce it, but in the end I couldn't bear the thought of not having it in there. And the "constitution" pun is irresistible.

    Other versions of this song i've hear throw in a "To Me" or "Tubby" after the "We'll haul away, Joe" Line, so Consti tu-ti-on may be the way one shanty man sang it, and as sailors from his ship went on to other vessels, and were given the Shanty Man role, and it just grew from there. it is important to note that the ammount of history we have written down is insignificant compared to the history that is oral. Oral history changes so often it becomes frustrating to follow.

    The pronounciation of "revolut-ion" could be a pigeon-english type of situation, between english and french? In the french you hear the pronounciation of "ion" more clearly. That was more common in older english anyway, which was more akin to french. If it was a mixed crew these kinds of bleedover effects must have been common.
    It could also just be a funny way to make the song sound more rustic and old, which is a common trope in these songs. Sentences like "them coconut fronds" and "A wealth of hair was on her head", must have been archaic already when they were written :-)

    Way haul away, we’ll haul away, Joe
    Then I married n Amish gurl
    She drove me dam near crazy;
    Way haul away, we’ll haul away Joe.
    My father was an Amish bishop, these are the words he taught me;
    And it is true, that my given name’s Joe.

      I'm not allowed. It's in my contract to never appear in public without it. I don't mind, really. It keeps me anonymous.
