I like how wonder work in 6 and the additon of districs i like too i do dislike how you cant build roads any longer, trades are there for that. Including all the DLC, you can have weather changes. fixes one of the biggest issues where random civs would settle one little city in some stupid place in the middle of my country by adding loyalty, no more quick settling just for one resource, the grievence mechanic i like lot, now i can justify war if you someone was a real dick to me a lot and i no longer get seen as the devil himself when i recapture my city or defend my city state. I like the non-stacking combat better, tho i am sure thats bcz i never gave the whole stacking thing a go with civ 4. I will comeback to 4 for sure bcz of the mods it has but honestly as a long time civ fan i like civ 6 the best, i always found civ 4 hard to get into tho that might be bcz i was really young back when i played it lol, here is hoping the next civ game can be better, would not mind going back to stacking units if it means the AI wont be brain dead any longer
Civ IV Rise and Fall of Civilization is the best game I've played in my whole life and I still play it every once in a while. It will always be the closest I've felt to revive history, and it gave me such a deep understanding of who we are as the human species. Everybody should play it!
Realism Invictus is incredible. They're only just finishing up production now. Go try it, and try not to be overwhelmed. It all feels so natural and balanced once you get into it

I Know it is late, IMO You should try Dune Wars, The map is reworked so that the Oceans is Sand and Due to the dessert setting food is replaced by water, there is also patches of "Ocean" occupied by a Harvestable called Spice, I think the Passion of that project was on par with HoI4 Equestria at War mod.
My favorite is their official Colonization mod. I like it more than the core game. Almost no relation to civ iv itself due to entirely different mechanics and management ststems.
i started playing civ with the very first civ game (yeah, im revealing my age) and went through 2 and 3 as well as call to power, etc. i made it to 4 and im stopping here. the game stopped being the civ i love(d) in 5 and that continued on in 6 - yeah the graphics are better but now its a sim city/panzer general tactical level grand strategy game. which is fine but isnt why i was playing the game. so civ lost me and they can do whatever they want but i wont move past 4 until they go back to what i want in a game.

But also poor diplomacy, poor UI (in civ 4 information what trade deals you have are fast accessible in the diplomacy view and the whole game is more intuitive), mobile style graphics in civ 6 is really weak too. Played them all from 1 to 6 and still think civ 4 is the best. I would love to see some features from 5 and 6 in 4 but overall 4 is the best.

I asked my friend wich one is the best as well.. he sayd 4.. so i played it.. then i played 6... and saw all the things wich civ6 (after few expansions) have changed/fixed compared to 4... and i must say people who say 4 is better than 6 are literally on a nostalgia overdose... civ6 actually has more depth and meaningful decisions to make.. while civ4 becomes doomstacking quiet quickly and micro-management of workers... civ4 has a lot of illusionary depth, meaningless actions and passive promotions, wich fangays mistake for depth... i like civ4 atmosphere and music more tho and the modding tools are really good - fall from heaven II and caveman2cosmos are high quality mods. Only things i didn't like about civ6 is the district system and that you can only have 1 unit per tile. (but positioning makes more sense now, since you can position different units in a certain way for tactics...) Should have given the chance to merge armies/units for a bigger singlestack instead... I think that bastard civ2 child even had armies mechanics (who tried to compete with civ2 and had some legal issues with firaxis etc..) I for example are nostalgia-nerd for civ2.. i just like that isometric token like graphics of the end of 90s (guess that's why i still play homm3 too haha...) replayed that one too, civ2 hasn't actually aged that well, so many balance issues and bugs etc... If u wanna play w mods i'd say play civ4.. if u wanna play good "vanilla" experience, play civ6.. (if u get past those graphics, u get used to them rather quickly) well the main argument is that civ6 is dumbed down compared to 4, but it actually is not, they have fixed and re-worked all the weak mechanics they have had over the years and streamlined things a bit. For multiplayer, it might be actually a way better game. i like tha map,terrain and stuff... Units look a bit too cartoony for my taste haha. My ultimate civgame would be literally Civ2-like isometric pixel graphics with either civ4+6 best features. Surprised community hasnt banded up to kickstart fundrising and make a Caveman 2 Cosmos game : ) that's how you send a message to game companies if they make a bad sequel game...
Ashes of Erebus is the current modmod version of Fall From Heaven II, and Dawn of Civilization is the current modmod version of Rhye's and Fall of Civilization.
can someone explain what is modmod.. i mean should i play ashes of erebus or ffh2 then? isnt erebus like entire fork from ffh2.. and then continued the development of the mod? @@Microphunktv-jb3kj They should be taken as what the word "modmod" says: They're mods of a mod. They aren't continuations of FFH2's development, they're different spins on it. I played a lot of them back in the day and while there's a few changes here and there that I think really are straightforward improvements on FFH2 (Master of Mana's hero mechanic is *so* good), they mostly add stuff that's cool but not really worth its weight. And even the mods that just do a few interesting things tend to later get extended by modmodmods that follow the add-more-stuff philosophy.
I would say that Ashes of Erebus deviates A LOT from Fall from Heaven 2 base. The most up-to-date version of the original mod is the mod "More Naval AI", which fixes countless bugs and improves the vanilla FfH2 mod by a great deal without changing or adding any content.
One update guys: Try history rewritten. Its like mini Realism Invictus, but more towards bts gameplay with lot of diversity, lore and an excellent religion system. If you get a chance, try it.
CIV 4 was my fav strategy game and still is. It have much better engine with no crashes and fast game load compare to CIV 5 and it have much much more hardcore gameplay. Mods can provide more diverse resources, civs or even game rules vanilla lack. Still i wonder why you not included VIP mod. This mod gives opportunity for more realistic hardcore game style i love
Civ 4 does run into issues with larger maps because of it's 32bit engine but then again that's also a problem Civ 5 has. I included mods I felt changed the game in a fairly significant way, I could probably do a follow up video on the best quality of life mods for Civ 4.
I have a little bit old computer (with windows 7 aka the best windows) and my top 3 favorite strategies are Victoria 2, heroes 3 and civ 4. It probably won't be if RI won't exist. I live this mod. Obviously it is better than these new civs (especially that civ gone like paradox with dlcs: they add to dlcs what should've been in vanilla. Good that at least Vicky is not that bad with dlcs, but it could be better)
Fall Further, Ashes of Erebus menu music. So iconic. Immmediate flashback, giant Demon smiles at me. Loved playing the Amurites or Vampiric Nation and surviving the apocalypse.
CIV 7 should be an evolution of CIV 4 with only graphics upgrade and More important a better AI Engine. With today s AI , you can build an engine that will beat any humain player by playing billions of team against himself with self learning.
Only a tiny minority of players cares about that (and a majority would be repelled), so that's not viable for a commercial project. Also, the reason that Civ4 mods stand out is the open modding of parts of the game engine itself in a popular language (C++), backed up by an easy scripting language for amateur programmers (Python).
I'm sorry but I can't consider that content. You just have to build more stuff. They added hundreds of techs, so the game slows down a lot and you keep building and building with no end in sights, just for the sake of building.
I'll just mention another HUGE and sadly hard to find these days mod for Civ IV - Civilization IV Gold (look for it on civfanatics topic), adding NINETY NEW CIVILIZATIONS and 20 leaders for EXISTING ONES. Each civ have their own and not too over the top mechanics, giving the game a great variety. They even get more or less well done ingame animated leaders with the graphical style of original Civ. Recommend checking it out, someone put a lot effort into making this mod.
Awesome list! Thank you for making it, I believe I will be trying some new mods to The Best Game Ever Made soon :) When talking about RFC you could've mentioned the modmod (or whatever you'd call it) - Rise and Fall: Europe. The concept remains the same, but the action takes place solely in Europe (and North Africa). The educational value is even greater, since the mod includes numerous civilizations, that would have never made it to the game otherwise, like Lithuanians, Hungarians or Bulgarians.
I would add thest mods to the lest: Planetfall and his modmod Conflict on Chiron (basicaly Alpha Centari on the engine of CivIV), Dune Wars, Rhye's and Fall of Civilization, PIe's Ancient Europe. All of these mods add cool new features to the game. Worth checking even in 2024.
@@gauravkumawat7962 It took me weeks while being a warlord razing cities left to right nearly a month in that game.. it is not slow.. it is just these rebellions are so stubborn to listen and not break my whole country into pieces back and back again. Still fun tho, but it's bad for me for not sleeping correctly.
FFH2 = one mod to rule them all. I thought a mage of your pedigree would know that Merlin. The highmen are dead, the council failed. Yourself have been banished into the Cosmos. Now, Erebus stands alone, and Ragnarok is near.
I love other educational RFC mods - RFCEurope, RFC Classic World, RFCAsia and Sword of Islam The made me learn a lot about those regions and gave interest in reding books about them. Lord of the rings is also a nice mod
It is wonderful for what it is, but yea it doesn't really introduce new content, just improves AI and wait times really. I would think of it as more of an unofficial patch than a mod
so....some instructions for those of us that are computer challenged would help. how do you download and install any or all of these mods? after it finishes downloading I get asked what to open it with. I'm lost.
RazingHel actually, Rise of Mankind was very much inspired by Rhyse and Fall, and is much better, as well as eventually helping to inspire Caveman2Cosmos. You should give it a serious try some time if you haven't yet...
I played Cavemen to Cosmos for a while, but it was to hefty and made the game crash too much, so I find I like Rocks to Rockets better. Its a trimmed down version of Cavemen to Cosmos but still had loads of extra stuff in comparison to the base game.
That must have been a long time ago, Rocks to Rockets hasn't been updated for like half a decade now - to the point that C2C has *better* performance (but might still suffer from the issue of too much stuff, especially buildings ?)
Good video but maybe you should have mentioned that a fall from heaven 2 prequel shipped with the expantion? Fall from heaven was amazing in my opinion. I didn't care for the story but it's the best forex fanatasy game I've played.

Honestly the best mod for civ 4 has to be BASE. It stays extremely close to the original game but adds on many more mechanics that could have been in the base game. new traits, civilizations, leaders, units, wonders, all while keeping the AI intact and even improving it over the base game. The mods in your video all are conversions of the base game while BASE IS civ4
TechGuyFromPoland They might work, you'll have to find the Civ 4 mods folder on OSx and stuff the mod you want to play in there. I don't have a mac so I can't help much, maybe check out civ fanatics forum.

I've only ever seen it in FFH2, I think it was made special for that mod. I'm sure though that someone on the FFH2 subforum on CivFanatics could tell you more though.
FFH2 is really playing in another league than anything else. But Magister modmod (close to vanilla, very stable), and Master of Mana (which annihilate the competition, but less stable than Magister) are what makes FFH2 best 4x ever. Better than MoOII, A.C. and MM.
Spliffa Bongsson-McBlunt Dawn of Civ and Rise of Mankind ended up being far superior successors to Rhyse and Fall that inherited some of its concepts and ended up leading to Caveman2Cosmos- though they continued to develop independently after C2C was born...
Roberto Araújo Wrong it evolved . Only sad part is it being less mod friendly . I am having a feeling that CiVI will be the more modable than CiV after they update the Mod tools 3 or 4 times . Am pretty sure "Proper World builder" is coming with the next update .
Something being mainstream doesnt mean it is good. Theres a lot of people buying and playing games that are absolute crap. IMHO, Civ4 is WAY better than its predecesors. It has a lot of depth to it, you have a lot more tactical choices in the short, mid, and long therm in the game and many diferent ways to plan a strategy. Civ5 and 6 bored me to death because you just pass turns and theres nothing to do.

Yea, I got it all set up yesterday :) - I already had the game but on disc and it failed to play on Win10 b4 a patch and id only played it briefly in the past and never bothered with mods. Ive played loads of Civ5 and like the look of 6 but is 4 still ur fave? Also, on the Rhyse & fall mod Multi player mod, it wont let me play as certain civs... Do you know why that might be? Sanazabaaar 4 is my favorite but it's the first Civ I played so I might be biased, I've never played RFC multiplayer so unfortunately I can't really advise there, have you checked the forums at civfanatics?

RazingHel some historical victories are nearly impossible on RFC on anything but the lowest difficulty. Rome's historical victory, for instance (you just can't produce enough hammers to build all the necessary cities and military units to defend them- unless you get very, very lucky in unit combats...) It's more a system designed to get the player and AI's to develop their civs in specific ways that mimic how history played out (completely ignoring that history could have played out VERY, VERY differently- for instance if Atilla The Hun had decided to take his hordes East instead of West, or if the Battle of Teutonberg Forest had never happened or been a Roman victory...) and remove all opportunity to change it than an actual way to win. A few cubs can get a Golden Age and Triumphal Arch by meeting 2/3 of their historical goals, but almost none can actually WIN that way- and the goals tend to lead to very poor decisions about what to do with one's civilization in pursuit of them... Real cubs set tgeir own goals- they did not pursue some arbitrary goals set in stone 1000 years before they were ever birn...
Beyond the Sword. I think you don't even need vanilla version, just Beyond the Sword. But if memory serves me right that are sold together. Try Falls From Heaven 2 with Magister modmod asap.

Haven´t played Civ IV, not even VI(I only seen lot of gameplays), just Civ V(which I enjoy and don´t understand any dissappointment) , but maybe one day, I will travel back in time. We´ll see.

BetterBatAI mod is a great combination of two mods that improve the AI and UI. It's my go to mod for standard Civ IV games.

Pie's Ancient Europe is my favorite mod. Realism and Rise of Mankind are tied for my second choice because they're both so good.

There's no point. The A.I. is completely broken and retarded. Winning a game of C2C is as easy as taking candy from a baby.

That mod was so big, it takes like a minute to load a turn.
Iv'e played ffh 2, final frontier, and rhy's and fall. Fall from Heaven II is my favorite by farrrrrrrrrr.
CIV 4 was my fav strategy game and still is. It have much better engine with no crashes and fast game load compare to CIV 5 and it have much much more hardcore gameplay. Mods can provide more diverse resources, civs or even game rules vanilla lack. Still i wonder why you not included VIP mod. This mod gives opportunity for more realistic hardcore game style i love
Civ 4 does run into issues with larger maps because of it's 32bit engine but then again that's also a problem Civ 5 has. I included mods I felt changed the game in a fairly significant way, I could probably do a follow up video on the best quality of life mods for Civ 4.

I have a little bit old computer (with windows 7 aka the best windows) and my top 3 favorite strategies are Victoria 2, heroes 3 and civ 4. It probably won't be if RI won't exist. I live this mod. Obviously it is better than these new civs (especially that civ gone like paradox with dlcs: they add to dlcs what should've been in vanilla. Good that at least Vicky is not that bad with dlcs, but it could be better)
Fall Further, Ashes of Erebus menu music. So iconic. Immmediate flashback, giant Demon smiles at me. Loved playing the Amurites or Vampiric Nation and surviving the apocalypse.
CIV 7 should be an evolution of CIV 4 with only graphics upgrade and More important a better AI Engine. With today s AI , you can build an engine that will beat any humain player by playing billions of team against himself with self learning.
Only a tiny minority of players cares about that (and a majority would be repelled), so that's not viable for a commercial project. Also, the reason that Civ4 mods stand out is the open modding of parts of the game engine itself in a popular language (C++), backed up by an easy scripting language for amateur programmers (Python).
IMHO, by content, Caveman 2 Cosmos has to be the best mod ever. Still, the amount of content does overwhelm the civ 4 engine at times...
It's certainly the biggest but having more of something doesn't necessarily make for a better experience.
I'm sorry but I can't consider that content. You just have to build more stuff. They added hundreds of techs, so the game slows down a lot and you keep building and building with no end in sights, just for the sake of building.

Oh yes, the amount of content is amazing. True, the game is very long. And computer opponents are not able to fully use the capabilities of the mod
I'll just mention another HUGE and sadly hard to find these days mod for Civ IV - Civilization IV Gold (look for it on civfanatics topic), adding NINETY NEW CIVILIZATIONS and 20 leaders for EXISTING ONES. Each civ have their own and not too over the top mechanics, giving the game a great variety. They even get more or less well done ingame animated leaders with the graphical style of original Civ. Recommend checking it out, someone put a lot effort into making this mod.

Thank you for making it, I believe I will be trying some new mods to The Best Game Ever Made soon :) When talking about RFC you could've mentioned the modmod (or whatever you'd call it) - Rise and Fall: Europe. The concept remains the same, but the action takes place solely in Europe (and North Africa). The educational value is even greater, since the mod includes numerous civilizations, that would have never made it to the game otherwise, like Lithuanians, Hungarians or Bulgarians.
I would add thest mods to the lest: Planetfall and his modmod Conflict on Chiron (basicaly Alpha Centari on the engine of CivIV), Dune Wars, Rhye's and Fall of Civilization, PIe's Ancient Europe. All of these mods add cool new features to the game. Worth checking even in 2024.
In Cave to Cosmos you have to wait for ever for a single turn. Dawn and Invictus are the best ones!

I play Realism invictus, it is nice, but when you play a large map, you wait really long for new turn.
you can deactive the "see enemy/friendly moves" so when you end your moves it will start another turn
+jitsuzuko ofc he disabled that option, but game still takes too much time to process turns in late eras because of its old engine.
@@gauravkumawat7962 It took me weeks while being a warlord razing cities left to right nearly a month in that game.. it is not slow.. it is just these rebellions are so stubborn to listen and not break my whole country into pieces back and back again. Still fun tho, but it's bad for me for not sleeping correctly.

FFH2 = one mod to rule them all. I thought a mage of your pedigree would know that Merlin. The highmen are dead, the council failed. Yourself have been banished into the Cosmos. Now, Erebus stands alone, and Ragnarok is near.

K-Mod is the best civ4 mod hands down, but maybe since more than a mod it is an "enhanced vanilla", you can't really compare it to other mods.
It is wonderful for what it is, but yea it doesn't really introduce new content, just improves AI and wait times really. I would think of it as more of an unofficial patch than a mod

so....some instructions for those of us that are computer challenged would help. how do you download and install any or all of these mods? after it finishes downloading I get asked what to open it with. I'm lost.

RazingHel actually, Rise of Mankind was very much inspired by Rhyse and Fall, and is much better, as well as eventually helping to inspire Caveman2Cosmos. You should give it a serious try some time if you haven't yet...

I played Cavemen to Cosmos for a while, but it was to hefty and made the game crash too much, so I find I like Rocks to Rockets better. Its a trimmed down version of Cavemen to Cosmos but still had loads of extra stuff in comparison to the base game.
That must have been a long time ago, Rocks to Rockets hasn't been updated for like half a decade now - to the point that C2C has *better* performance (but might still suffer from the issue of too much stuff, especially buildings ?)

Honestly the best mod for civ 4 has to be BASE. It stays extremely close to the original game but adds on many more mechanics that could have been in the base game. new traits, civilizations, leaders, units, wonders, all while keeping the AI intact and even improving it over the base game. The mods in your video all are conversions of the base game while BASE IS civ4

I've only ever seen it in FFH2, I think it was made special for that mod. I'm sure though that someone on the FFH2 subforum on CivFanatics could tell you more though.
FFH2 is really playing in another league than anything else. But Magister modmod (close to vanilla, very stable), and Master of Mana (which annihilate the competition, but less stable than Magister) are what makes FFH2 best 4x ever. Better than MoOII, A.C. and MM.
Oh and, archers have range 1 in both modmod I mentioned. They have attack and defense strength and range strength.

The last update is from 2012. I think Civ 5 RFC development stopped a while ago.

Spliffa Bongsson-McBlunt Dawn of Civ and Rise of Mankind ended up being far superior successors to Rhyse and Fall that inherited some of its concepts and ended up leading to Caveman2Cosmos- though they continued to develop independently after C2C was born...

The Steam stats would disagree with you on that, Civ has never been more mainstream than at the moment. Civ 4 will always be bae though.
Roberto Araújo Wrong it evolved . Only sad part is it being less mod friendly . I am having a feeling that CiVI will be the more modable than CiV after they update the Mod tools 3 or 4 times .

Something being mainstream doesnt mean it is good. Theres a lot of people buying and playing games that are absolute crap.
IMHO, Civ4 is WAY better than its predecesors. It has a lot of depth to it, you have a lot more tactical choices in the short, mid, and long therm in the game and many diferent ways to plan a strategy. Civ5 and 6 bored me to death because you just pass turns and theres nothing to do.
When civ4 came out steam was in its infancy. Civ4 came out in 2005. I'm sure if civ4 came out in when civ5 did it would have better steam stats.

Yea, I got it all set up yesterday :) - I already had the game but on disc and it failed to play on Win10 b4 a patch and id only played it briefly in the past and never bothered with mods. Ive played loads of Civ5 and like the look of 6 but is 4 still ur fave? Also, on the Rhyse & fall mod Multi player mod, it wont let me play as certain civs... Do you know why that might be? Sanazabaaar 4 is my favorite but it's the first Civ I played so I might be biased, I've never played RFC multiplayer so unfortunately I can't really advise there, have you checked the forums at civfanatics?

RazingHel some historical victories are nearly impossible on RFC on anything but the lowest difficulty. Rome's historical victory, for instance (you just can't produce enough hammers to build all the necessary cities and military units to defend them- unless you get very, very lucky in unit combats...) It's more a system designed to get the player and AI's to develop their civs in specific ways that mimic how history played out (completely ignoring that history could have played out VERY, VERY differently- for instance if Atilla The Hun had decided to take his hordes East instead of West, or if the Battle of Teutonberg Forest had never happened or been a Roman victory...) and remove all opportunity to change it than an actual way to win. A few cubs can get a Golden Age and Triumphal Arch by meeting 2/3 of their historical goals, but almost none can actually WIN that way- and the goals tend to lead to very poor decisions about what to do with one's civilization in pursuit of them... Real cubs set tgeir own goals- they did not pursue some arbitrary goals set in stone 1000 years before they were ever birn...

Beyond the Sword. I think you don't even need vanilla version, just Beyond the Sword. But if memory serves me right that are sold together. Try Falls From Heaven 2 with Magister modmod asap.
C2C suffers from heavy featuritis and is nearly unplayable, totally boring and pointless, but the rest are my favourites, too.

For me it feels different, for example a sige of a city is total different to BtS.
Or if a city becomes unhappy or sick, tat can be real bad, in BtS it dosen''t care.

Haven´t played Civ IV, not even VI(I only seen lot of gameplays), just Civ V(which I enjoy and don´t understand any dissappointment) , but maybe one day, I will travel back in time. We´ll see.
