Hello there! Sorry for not uploading much the past few weeks. If you want to know what I've been up to, I've been working on a video game called Titan Shell. It's a 1-2 player roguelike where you use a mech to break out of prison and run away from the police. A corrupt leader within the church has created a mess of things, and it's up to you to set thing straight! We have a Steam page and everything! But I also didn't want to put out a video if I didn't have a passion for what I was talking about. And with the HK content drought, that's where I found myself at the start of 2024. It was easier to dive into working on my game than making videos. But working on this project reminded me how much I enjoy making videos and sharing them with you all. I'd like to be more active in 2025. Since we're still in a HK content drought, I MIGHT move into other topics for videos, like general indie gaming stuff, or explore the lore for other games, or maybe something else entirely. Love seeing Mossbag enjoying Haiku. I reached out to him via Twitter while Haiku was still in Kickstarter, for him to check out the demo and hopefully tweet about it to help the campaign. Thankfully he did, the game was released and I even got to make the official art of its limited physical run (and an illustrated map of its world)
Honestly, the artwork on Haiku’s physical release is the best there is. It is truly top notch, and I totally snoozed on the release. Will definitely pick it up at some point. Nice work!
I recently played Nine Sols and I can confirm that it is GOOD, and if you go into it blind like I did with nothing but the game's cover you will be caught off guard within the first 15 minutes.
I really liked the opening, but the story started to drag with dialogue going on too long and too often for my taste, and im not connecting with the story anymore. Very solid game play though, definitely gonna finish it out.
(SPOILERS) dude when i fought the second boss and blew her legs off my jaw DROPPED. Then proceeded to use her own device to make her a slave to herself ig? Holy shit like the beginning of the story was a bit of a shock but it was kinda censored in a way? (Lights blocking the actual gore) but that genuinely shocked me
Nine Sols is a 10/10 game. I *highly* recommend you read the prequel comic, too. It won't directly tie to the begin of the story, but it WILL pay off by the end of the game if you're trying to 100% it. I'm currently doing my second playthrough and showing a friend the game. It is VERY difficult for a first playthrough, and anticipate having to truly master parrying, dodging, and countering by the end. The story is soul crushing, the art is gorgeous, the music is great, and the world is so cool. Absolutely worth a play. There's also a Story Mode if you don't want to check into the difficulty. I recently finished Laika: Aged Through Blood, and that was pretty great when its combat is going.
As an Ohioan i remember when they recorded here for voidwrought. It was an exciting time and really boosted the economy. Very cool to have an authentic representation of our state
Nine Sols is my GoTY and probably right behind Hollow Knight for my fav Metroidvania game. It is absolutely amazing and I encourage everyone here to play it

29:31 based mossbag. So many people dislike this game for its story and dialogue, and i say, that's one of its biggest charms. Yi is very refreshing for a metroidvania character because he has opinions of his own, and he undergoes a lot pf character growth throughout the game. I kinda loved that.
Nine sols combat is peak. If you like parrying this game is 100% for you. Just dont hesitate to try different jades when you are stuck on some bosses. Each room is more like a platforming puzzle and you'd want to explore every available corner as they are not very big or challenging. The story and lore are good if you are up for slight reading. It adds a lot to the vibe and connects you to the characters (including bosses). Tao punk style turned out to be unexpectedly interesting mashup. For me its one of the best games this year. Highly recommend

So true! I played a few parry centered games before (Unsighted, Katana Zero, Vernal Edge) but I feel like Nine Sols is the first game that made me feel badass while executing parries, and made me want to master that combat system instead of resorting to the dash and avoid that I always knew. That style of combat forces you to wait and study your enemies attacks to turn their force against them. I feel like it's very neat that the gameplay mechanic itself embodies the Taoist philosophy of action through inaction, and serves as a passive storytelling device.
Ender Lilies is the first game that made the setting really feel sad. Like everything in there is sad. In Hollow Knight you have some funny moments, some hopeful moments, but Ender Lilies was only getting more sad. And the music there plays probably the biggest role in creating this atmosphere. Overall loved the game for it.
playing nine sols feels a lot more souls-like than metroidvania. I was rather surprised. people say hollow night is souls inspired but this game is literally sekiro inspired. it's like a perfect 50/50 blend
Nine Sols is SUPER good, everyone should play it. But don't expect a metroidvania it's more of a 2D sekiro with AMAZING bosses, and an OST that's in my top 3 oat

SO HAPPY SOMEONE IS FINALLY TALKING ABOUT BO. I played Bo and Nine sols back to back and while Nine Sols was better in my eyes, Bo was also so good. One of my favorite games I've played.
I think the two things that keep it from reaching the same heights in my personal (and that's the operative word) pantheon is 1. linearity and 2. samey areas, in contrast to distinct biomes that actually feel lived-in.

Nine sols is one of the best one for me, its basically hollow knight and sekiro combined. If youre waiting for silksong play this game. This also the first game where I dive into a game without looking any content about it, so if you havent seen anything about nine sols I suggest you play it rn it takes so many interesting turns.
I love Ender Lilies, but man, the atmosphere is so sad and depressing. The lore is sad, the OST is sad, and the ending(s) is sad, just thinking about it makes me sad. 9/10 game, would cry again, especially with the sequel releasing soon.
I would say Nine Sols is on the same level as Hollow Knight. The combat in hollow knight won't feel as advanced after playing Nine Sols. The combat and story is awesome
Nine Sols is honestly harder than Hollow Knight is, atleast in terms of the base game bosses. It was a blast though, even as someone who doesn't play many souls-likes
I was very happy to see haiku included in this and talked about fondly. The creator of haiku also made a unique farming game that sits at the bottom of your screen and takes the characters from haiku! But genuinely the creator Mr.Morris is super cool and often asks for opinions from his fans on updates or visual changes! Also reached out to him and was very very kind and appreciative. If there is one game I could recommend from this it’s absolutely haiku!
"There needs to be more lizard themed metroidvanias," huh? Well, buddy, have I got the perfect game for you! You should play Rain World. Well, it's not exactly a Metroidvania, as it doesn't have that style of combat and upgrade-based progression typical of one, but you should give it a try. I can't exactly explain why even though these games play out quite differently, something about these two games feels very related. I can tell I'm not the only one who thinks that way as almost every Hollow Knight content creator I've seen has also played Rain World. There is quite a substantial overlap between the Rain World and Hollow Knight communities, I feel you'd be as surprised as I was. I found it to be the perfect game to Anyway, cool vid, Love you're content, have a good one
I absolutely love rain world, but its not even close to hk, and suggesting it somebody who wants to experience something close to hk will probably lead to ealry drop
I thought, "He should play Rain World" when he mentioned how he loves rodents in these games, lol. Rain World is awesome, but I definitely think it doesn't qualify as a metroidvania. No boss fights or upgrades, and technically the intended progression is linear. ...that being said... I watched this video hoping for inspiration to make a mod that turns Rain World into a metroidvania. The mod should be easy; I'm just questioning its scope...
@TheLazyCowboy1 Oh man, the scope of that sounds pretty insane. I'm currently in development of a Hollow Knight inspired metroidvania myself, making hand drawn enemies, bosses, items and whatnot. But to make all those procedurally animated? Now that's a challenge! Say, what would you change to make it a metroidvania?
I just finished Nine Sols and it’s amazing! Definitely gonna get the other ones on the list to quench my metroidvania thirst. I love the parry mechanic too. Tip: it’s available on gamepass on PC and Xbox

Not enough praise for my Nine Sols story :( Downgraded to “Ow Edge”. I love the attempt at narrative through the eyes of Yi, where he already knows the full story and we only learn it as an audience through his interactions with other characters and events. 10/10 game… shooting for Steam awards GOTY for me. Stay Hollow Knights ;)

Nine sols took me by surprise, I first looked it as a copycat, then the chinese themes kinda hit hard and I bought in- then absolutely fell in love. What an awesome game.

there's a Chinese game that has Hollow Knight reference/easter egg in it, sadly it's hidden in an area that kind of late into the game(i warn you the game map is *HUGE* ), the item name is "Hollow Vessel" a Mask basically. game name's "Afterimage"
did you ever tried these games: The Messenger, Iconoclasts, Environmental Station Alpha. this 3 games are up to this day the 3 best level design metroidvanias
I finished Nine Sols recently, and i must say i adore it now shares the crown with Hollos Knight in my eyes. The story is great. The art style is nice. The fighting mechanics are the best in the genre in my opinion. Just as in Sekiro when you get good at it, battles with bosses start to look like art, where you block every attack and move like the wind. I finished two of the bosses realising that i didn't use healing at all, that felt like nothing else. One small tip: jump parry is the best.
Pronty is also an amazing metroidvania! It captures the same thrill of exploration that Hollow Knight does, but feels super original since the whole game takes place underwater and has a really unique combat system

I know rain world isnt a metroidvania, but still a little sad to see it not included. So many rain world fans I know found the game because they loved hollow knight!
While there does seem to be a lot of player overlap I feel like it'd be weird to include it in a "games like hollow knight" video considering it's almost nothing like hollow knight. I love RW though, I'm definitely included in that overlapping group.
@DoomerSlice it’s definitely a different genre of game, but I wouldn’t say they are nothing alike! Both are exploration focused with a lot of in depth lore, both take place in dead/ancient remnants of civilisations and have amazing world building surrounding that, both have challenging platforming and combat encounters, both are 2d games with stunning art and music design, both are indie games with great communities…I’m sure there’s more. Rain world is a lot more survival focused, and hollow knight a lot more combat/platforming focused, but there’s definitely similarities. The player overlap wouldn’t be so strong if there wasn’t!

Of all these games I played only Nine sols but man oh man, I hope it becomes a cult classic because I think it's pretty incredible.

Nine Sols is soooooo good. Definitely scratched both itches I apparently had after HK and Sekiro each. Absolutely the GOTY for me
Nine Sols is the best MV since Hollow Knight and in many ways surpasses it.
I think the two things that keep it from reaching the same heights in my personal (and that's the operative word) pantheon is 1. linearity and 2. samey areas, in contrast to distinct biomes that actually feel lived-in.
Nine Sols got so snubbed this year. Adjust your expectations for a more linear, story-driven game and it's the best metroidvania I've played since HK.

Nine sols is one of the best one for me, its basically hollow knight and sekiro combined. If youre waiting for silksong play this game. This also the first game where I dive into a game without looking any content about it, so if you havent seen anything about nine sols I suggest you play it rn it takes so many interesting turns.
I loved the story in Nine Sols, actually enjoyed the whole game more than Hollow Knight.

I love Ender Lilies, but man, the atmosphere is so sad and depressing. The lore is sad, the OST is sad, and the ending(s) is sad, just thinking about it makes me sad.
9/10 game, would cry again, especially with the sequel releasing soon.

I would say Nine Sols is on the same level as Hollow Knight.
The combat in hollow knight won't feel as advanced after playing Nine Sols. The combat and story is awesome
Nine Sols is honestly harder than Hollow Knight is, atleast in terms of the base game bosses. It was a blast though, even as someone who doesn't play many souls-likes
I was very happy to see haiku included in this and talked about fondly. The creator of haiku also made a unique farming game that sits at the bottom of your screen and takes the characters from haiku! But genuinely the creator Mr.Morris is super cool and often asks for opinions from his fans on updates or visual changes! Also reached out to him and was very very kind and appreciative. If there is one game I could recommend from this it’s absolutely haiku!

Well, it's not exactly a Metroidvania, as it doesn't have that style of combat and upgrade-based progression typical of one, but you should give it a try. I can tell I'm not the only one who thinks that way as almost every Hollow Knight content creator I've seen has also played Rain World. Rain World is awesome, but I definitely think it doesn't qualify as a metroidvania. No boss fights or upgrades, and technically the intended progression is linear.
...that being said... I watched this video hoping for inspiration to make a mod that turns Rain World into a metroidvania. The mod should be easy; I'm just questioning its scope...

@TheLazyCowboy1 Oh man, the scope of that sounds pretty insane. I'm currently in development of a Hollow Knight inspired metroidvania myself, making hand drawn enemies, bosses, items and whatnot. But to make all those procedurally animated? Now that's a challenge! Say, what would you change to make it a metroidvania?

I just finished Nine Sols and it’s amazing! Definitely gonna get the other ones on the list to quench my metroidvania thirst. I love the parry mechanic too. Tip: it’s available on gamepass on PC and Xbox

Downgraded to “Ow Edge”. I love the attempt at narrative through the eyes of Yi, where he already knows the full story and we only learn it as an audience through his interactions with other characters and events. 10/10 game… shooting for Steam awards GOTY for me. Stay Hollow Knights ;)

Nine sols took me by surprise, I first looked it as a copycat, then the chinese themes kinda hit hard and I bought in- then absolutely fell in love. What an awesome game.

there's a Chinese game that has Hollow Knight reference/easter egg in it, sadly it's hidden in an area that kind of late into the game(i warn you the game map is *HUGE* ), the item name is "Hollow Vessel" a Mask basically. game name's "Afterimage"

I finished Nine Sols recently, and i must say i adore it now shares the crown with Hollos Knight in my eyes.
The story is great.
The art style is nice.
The fighting mechanics are the best in the genre in my opinion.
Just as in Sekiro when you get good at it, battles with bosses start to look like art, where you block every attack and move like the wind. I finished two of the bosses realising that i didn't use healing at all, that felt like nothing else.
One small tip: jump parry is the best.
I really hope you cover The Suite Life of Zack and Cody Circle of Spies, it’s a classic :D

I was really hoping nine sols was in here, its a fantastic game.
Pronty is also an amazing metroidvania! It captures the same thrill of exploration that Hollow Knight does, but feels super original since the whole game takes place underwater and has a really unique combat system

While there does seem to be a lot of player overlap I feel like it'd be weird to include it in a "games like hollow knight" video considering it's almost nothing like hollow knight. I love RW though, I'm definitely included in that overlapping group.
@DoomerSlice it’s definitely a different genre of game, but I wouldn’t say they are nothing alike! Both are exploration focused with a lot of in depth lore, both take place in dead/ancient remnants of civilisations and have amazing world building surrounding that, both have challenging platforming and combat encounters, both are 2d games with stunning art and music design, both are indie games with great communities…I’m sure there’s more. Rain world is a lot more survival focused, and hollow knight a lot more combat/platforming focused, but there’s definitely similarities. The player overlap wouldn’t be so strong if there wasn’t!
