Love these solutions. I read a forum where people had written to Mazda (and others) to change the stop/start system so that you can opt in, as opposed to having to opt out each time you drive it. They said "no". Apparently this is driven by Euro Greenie policies, where in some countries it's mandatory. This looks like a good solution. I just hope this doesn't change anything else such as airbags working ect as the car thinks its in a service mode state 😕
I highly doubt it would affect anything like that. Airbags are a critical safety function that can't rely on so many little things like a bonnet switch functioning. If that little switch was faulty or somebody didn't latch their bonnet fully the airbags must still function. Also somebody in the comments said they called mazda to confirm nothing else is affected.
@@calvinlester3070 yeah that's true my common sense did think that. I guess I was thinking down the line of the airbag being disabled for the service being provided so the mechanic is not at risk. Or, specifically the bonnet pedestrian feature not working as designed? Istop is not on cars sold in the USA apparently, so would be interested to know if the switch is there for those cars as this might help determine if its ONLY there as part of the Istop system
⚠️ Disabling the start/stop function by bypassing the open hood sensor disables other functions as well. When the sensors signal that the hood is open, the car goes into a kind of safe mode to allow the mechanic to do his work and also to prevent injuries. So in addition to disabling start/stop, the turn signals will not flash when locking the doors and the hood will not jump up in case of a pedestrian accident, and maybe some other functions will be disabled.
So far the 3 different Mazdas I've done this to (2013 M6, 2019 CX3, 2017 CX5) have all seen no other noticeable effects. I check carefully with each one. Eg alarms, signals blinking on lock/unlock etc. I've checked them all and they all remain functional. I'd love to know about the bonnet jumping up in event of an accident, but I struggle to see why an important safety function could be disabled by accidentally not shutting the bonnet properly.
Will this work on my 2010 mazda3 that has the 2 batteries? Had them replaced about 4 years ago which they are not cheap and now istop doesn't work and istop light keeps flashing orange. And will it stop istop from flashing? Thanks
I'm not 100% sure as the earliest car I've done this to is a 2013. I've seen a lot of verification comments up to about 2022. If your car has iStop it's worth seeing if the switch is there and then you can try it if you like. It's easily reversible as you can see from the video.
Mine is 2016 and the screw is so tiny and won’t turn it’s a nightmare but because I can’t get the screw out I’ll never know . Hope it works for you warren Mine is skyactive fastback
I've heard a lot of people do go for smaller regular batteries after disabling iStop. I'm personally not ready to start recommending batteries as it can be different based on engine size, temperatures in your country etc. However if I needed to change my battery I'd happily go for something smaller and cheaper.
Seems to work fine on my Mazda 6 GtSp my 2023, but I’m going to reconnect the switch because I’m concerned it might interfere with the active bonnet function. The owners handbook warns the bonnet must be closed for the system to work, so maybe the switch informs it.
Then again, it might be a good thing if it does deactivate the active bonnet feature. It sounds like another pointless bit of tech nobody ever asked for.
Greetings, I have a MaDa Demio 2014, the i stop worked normally and out of nowhere one day it stopped working and in the millero I get the i stop indicator blinking orange and when I turn off the car a warning comes out saying i stop 0% and more below it says x49 help please
Thank you Calvin You made a great video. I’ve just disabled the I stop on my Mazda 3 2014 and it’s the best thing ever. Can anyone tell me if this will affect the airbag operation ???
Thank you for sharing your simple solution. My question would be this: Currently, my i-stop is flashing and it is annoying. Along with it is the triangluar warning light...Will doing this solution remove the errors? please share the forum links... thanks
Hello. Is it possible to disable/disconnect the ieloop technology altogether? My mazda 6 is the 2014 model and recently, the car gave a warning that says "ieloop inspection required". I brought it to my agent and they say that i need to replace the capacitor which cost more than USD1,000 including servicing. As i rarely use the technology, is it possible to just disable/disconnect it? and will the car run normally after that?
Not as far as I know. I've never played around with the iEloop system. I don't know if removing and not replacing the capacitor will clear the error, but I'd also be cautious fiddling with capacitors as they can hold very dangerous amounts of electrical charge. Hopefully you can get an answer somewhere. That's a lot of money to replace something that saves minimal amounts of fuel.
Someone suggested if you put something on the off button in the dash to hold it permanently in then each time you start the car it will default to off instead of on.
With my 2012/2013 CX-5 you don't need an offset screwdriver, just a straight one from behind, may be on the slightest angle but easy to get good strong bite on the screw. Thank God no more retched faulty amber I-Stop function warning symbol carry on 😅😅
I did all this two days ago which appeared to work as all the orange lights went off. However, this morning they came back on again then disappeared again. Maybe it’s a fault on the dashboard? Weird how the sensors been completely disconnected yet still allows the amber istop lights to illuminate. Anyone got any suggestions?
On my 2013 Mazda 6 it works, my car no longer shuts off and I don't have an i-stop indicator on the dash, however I have noticed that when I lock the car, my car lock light does not respond even though it does. When unlocking the car all 4 lights work, has anyone had this problem and how did they fix it thanks!
I disable istop when I start the car, and will enable when I anticipate longer wait time (usually more than 10 seconds) at the red stop. I am the 2nd owner of my Mazda 6 GT. It has a total of 110hours of Istop time. So I think I might have saved money.
This is definitely not a fix for everybody. I personally don't tend to drive in enough traffic for iStop to be worth it. I, and many people like me, just want it disabled once and for all without the need to disable it every time.
@@fallout1116 the real reason manufacturers install this auto/start stop is to pass emission rating standard. Nothing much on saving the customers money. Infact theres. More. Money to be made in spare parts, batteries, starters, engine mounting etc.
The Istop in Diesel cars stops the engine from getting warm enough in short drives, my wife did 15 minute drives every working day, this killed the engine, luckily it was replaced by Mazda free of charge, I don’t want this to happen again, so hopefully this will help. My daughter has the car now and she doesn’t drive it like an old lady but still I don’t trust Mazda CX-5 anymore. If anyone has any suggestions on the cx5 Diesel engine issue a comment would be appreciated.
My car is only front wheel drive, but I don't see how this would affect awd. It's apparently something put there to prevent istop kicking in when mechanics are doing tests. So even if you close the bonnet, until you turn the car off again istop won't activate. If it affected the awd system that would be very bad and I can't imagine mazda would do something like that.
My wife has recently got a gen 3 2017 mazda 3 and the istop light is flashing orange on the dash. If i do this process will the light go away all together?
I'm not sure as I've personally never seen this issue. A quick google search suggests this could be a battery warning so iStop won't enable. I'd suggest you check to see if any other lights come on as well and try to find the source of the issue first.
If its a 17 it's probable on its original battery ( jap writing on it is a clue) they last 6 -7 years. If your istop is on all the time your stop start probably isn't working. Reset stop start ( UA-cam it piece of piss) or get a battery test done.
On my mazda 2 istop on mzd connect is ready with engine blue, battery blue, ac blue too, and on cluster flashing green icon, but when i hit red lights i try to hit the brake suddenly cluster not flashing green again (not flashing amber too) it just dissapear, and on mzd connect it say not ready but 3 icon of engine, battery and ac still in color blue but it says not ready... This will never go ready and flashing green again on cluster...but if i turn off engine and start again it will go ready again but not working like before (status ready but not stop when i on red light and it become not ready again with blue light on engine battery and ac) Anybody can help? I want to make sure my vehicle on normal state thanks buddy
That's strange as this has worked on so many makes, models and years. If the light is flashing that might indicate a different issue is present. Was the light already flashing before you tried this trick? A quick google search suggests it could be something else affecting iStop like your battery not charging properly. Maybe have a look at the battery or charging before you get stuck?
@@gobikrishnan9827 yeah unfortunately there is probably a battery issue present. Maybe have it looked at to see if it's the battery or alternator and go from there. Definitely don't want to get stuck with a dead battery.
Is this a newer model? Just bought a 2nd hand 2019 Mazda 3, it has the buttons for on/off but you gotta press it every time you get in the car. Would get a new Mazda for my wife but she hates the I-stop feature.
Does anyone know if the car will pass the "EU" annual test (road safety test?) after this? I have lived with pressing the button on a Subaru XV, but on the Mazda 3 it is located a little bit more behind the steering wheel and I need press it for much longer. Thank you so much for this video!
🤠Found the same video 1 year later. Putting it back on now for the testung from eu. I also found that for my XV the battery for the non auto stop costs half of the ato stop one. A giant waste of resources.
Each to their own. I personally don't want a piece of paper wedged in the button. It just looks tacky to me. Also then you're still left with the orange istop light permanently on your dash. Not an issue to some but I personally can't stand excess lights on the dash.
@@calvinlester3070 in my case (mazda 3 2019) I have only few blinks of i-start icon after engine start and then it disappear... i have there small black paper with thick maybe 1,5 mm...
Edit: Nevermind. It was the alternator belt that coincidentally snapped. It works 😁 I just did this on my Mazda 3 2014. After a while I got "Charging System Warning" and "pull over to a safe spot" 😕
As I refitted this switch I noticed the engine didnt stop. Pressed the istop button a long time, got some beeps and it started stopping again. So I opened the bonnet(with the switch fitted), started the engine and closed it. The stop function is off now and it survives restarts of the engine.🎉
Nope. Reset during the night. If it is similar to the Individual setting (eco, comfort, sport, sport+,individual) it resets after around 4 hours with the engine off.
The deep cycle battery is double the price of a normal battery. So, the extra $250 you pay on the cost of a battery every 3 years, is equal to or more than the cost of the fuel saving, depending on how much driving you do & the type of driving you do, city or country.
Why would you want to disengage the I-Stop? They are there for a reason, to shut the engine off when you are at the lights ect, to reduce polution and save fuel. And you think you are smart. But your not.

Hi , will the alarm work ?
Does this apply to 2012 Mazda demio skyactive?I can't seem to find the thing to pluck it off.
I assumed all SkyActiv models would be close enough. I may be wrong. The earliest I've done this on is my 2013.
Mine is 2016 and the screw is so tiny and won’t turn it’s a nightmare but because I can’t get the screw out I’ll never know . Hope it works for you warren
Mine is skyactive fastback
After disabling istop, can i use a cheaper regular NON q85 Battery? If yes which one do u guys recommend?
Thanks
I've heard a lot of people do go for smaller regular batteries after disabling iStop. I'm personally not ready to start recommending batteries as it can be different based on engine size, temperatures in your country etc.
However if I needed to change my battery I'd happily go for something smaller and cheaper.
hi mate, do you think it will work on a 2016 mazda 3 hatch? thanks for this!
I believe that it should. Have a read through some of the comments, a lot of people have stated which year and models they've done this on too.
Seems to work fine on my Mazda 6 GtSp my 2023, but I’m going to reconnect the switch because I’m concerned it might interfere with the active bonnet function. The owners handbook warns the bonnet must be closed for the system to work, so maybe the switch informs it.
Fair enough. I'd never heard of that function before, I just looked up what it does. Seems very new.
Then again, it might be a good thing if it does deactivate the active bonnet feature. It sounds like another pointless bit of tech nobody ever asked for.
Why my istop light still blinking amber after doing this? Pls help.. 2013 cx5
Thank you very much Calvin.
Greetings, I have a MaDa Demio 2014, the i stop worked normally and out of nowhere one day it stopped working and in the millero I get the i stop indicator blinking orange and when I turn off the car a warning comes out saying i stop 0% and more below it says x49 help please
Thank you Calvin
You made a great video. I’ve just disabled the I stop on my Mazda 3 2014 and it’s the best thing ever.
Can anyone tell me if this will affect the airbag operation ???
Hi, this will definitely not affect airbag operation.
In a previous comment somebody actually called Mazda and confirmed this has no other effects.
Thank you Calvin , you are a true legend…✅✅✅
Finally! Good job!
Hi.. how nowadays your car anything happened on i stop function or i eloop function?
Hi. Since uploading the video there have not been any issues from doing this on the two cars I've done it to.
HI Calvin ..2014 mazda 3 sp25 .. did all above in video but istop still flashing orange .. any idea's ..?
Works like a charm
Thank you for sharing your simple solution. My question would be this: Currently, my i-stop is flashing and it is annoying. Along with it is the triangluar warning light...Will doing this solution remove the errors?
please share the forum links... thanks
battery is dying. happened to me yesterday.
It fixed it for me 👍
Did it stop the istop light flashing for you please? I have the same problem...
I just did this to my mazda 3 and seems to work great,i hate the istop feature!
Nice and easy. Thank you.
Someone suggested if you put something on the off button in the dash to hold it permanently in then each time you start the car it will default to off instead of on.
😂
Hi Calvin.great video .thanks = ) . Did u try how to disable i-eloop as well ? = )
I haven't tried that as it's not a system I personally want to disable.
Mec, tu es un génie!!!
On my CX50 if you disconnect the switch or bypass it, an open bonnet icon shows on the dash and it dings at you.
That's a shame. This must be on the new cars as they've never had that before.
When unlocking the car all 4 lights work, has anyone had this problem and how did they fix it thanks!
thank you very much, good health to you
I disable istop when I start the car, and will enable when I anticipate longer wait time (usually more than 10 seconds) at the red stop.
A study by Popular Mechanics in 2015 found that stop-start technology made less than 3% difference in terms of overall fuel efficiency.
@@fallout1116 but delivers a massive cost in terms of starter wear and tear on the diesel
@@fallout1116 the real reason manufacturers install this auto/start stop is to pass emission rating standard. Nothing much on saving the customers money. Infact theres. More. Money to be made in spare parts, batteries, starters, engine mounting etc.
My screw is so tiny I can’t get a hold on it plus it’s pretty rusty, I can’t put heat on it 😢
The Istop in Diesel cars stops the engine from getting warm enough in short drives, my wife did 15 minute drives every working day, this killed the engine, luckily it was replaced by Mazda free of charge, I don’t want this to happen again, so hopefully this will help. My daughter has the car now and she doesn’t drive it like an old lady but still I don’t trust Mazda CX-5 anymore. If anyone has any suggestions on the cx5 Diesel engine issue a comment would be appreciated.
Let's all give thanks to the Euro-Greenies !!
Does it affect the awd?
Nah your battery's f ucked. Get it tested.
If its a 17 it's probable on its original battery ( jap writing on it is a clue) they last 6 -7 years. If your istop is on all the time your stop start probably isn't working. Reset stop start ( UA-cam it piece of piss) or get a battery test done.
The stop sells cars by stuffing them... stopping and starting all the time cracking spark plugs..etc etc
Can just isolate the plate with shrink tubing?
It's a microswitch mate so no you would have to stop the metal arm moving altogether.
How did you actually manage that
Tried this on my mazda 3 2014 diesel and i stop still flashing
On my mazda 2 istop on mzd connect is ready with engine blue, battery blue, ac blue too, and on cluster flashing green icon, but when i hit red lights i try to hit the brake suddenly cluster not flashing green again (not flashing amber too) it just dissapear, and on mzd connect it say not ready but 3 icon of engine, battery and ac still in color blue but it says not ready... This will never go ready and flashing green again on cluster...but if i turn off engine and start again it will go ready again but not working like before (status ready but not stop when i on red light and it become not ready again with blue light on engine battery and ac)
Anybody can help? I want to make sure my vehicle on normal state thanks buddy
Doe not work on 2024 cx-5 it shows the truck is oped in the cluster
Hi. It doesn’t work in my mazda 6 2014 🙁. Still that i stop light blinking. Any other ways to solve this issue. Tq
@@calvinlester3070 yes. Before i tried this the light already flashing.
@@gobikrishnan9827 yeah unfortunately there is probably a battery issue present. Maybe have it looked at to see if it's the battery or alternator and go from there. Definitely don't want to get stuck with a dead battery.
@@calvinlester3070 yes
What is the benefit of doing this?
It saves the starter from the frequent starts after the engine goes off in a jam
Thsnk you very much.
My model has a turn off/on switch and I can turn the iStop off whenever I feel like and no need to McGuyver things.
Tried it, and realized one small problem: Light dont flash after you lock the door, other else is fine.
Okay thanks. That's good feedback. What year and model? This isn't the case on mine.
@@calvinlester3070 2019 cx5 kf model
@@looilinchen Interesting. I don't think this is the case on the 2019 CX3 I did this to. Good to know though.
@@calvinlester3070 hmm.. I just did this small mod. Let me check with the lights tomorrow. 2020 KF CX5
Yep, Confirmed. Lights don't flash when locking. It inly double flash when unlocking. Small matter
Does not work on a 2018 Mazda 6
I did that, and I still get the error message on my dash.
This modification works but it also deactivates the alarm system.
Hallelujah! Good riddance cursed iStop.
it is better to use small piece of paper pushed between start/stop button and edge of the frame. Just like that... :)
@Maxrob pop fair enough. In my 2013 mazda 6 the light stays on orange if you turn off via the button.
Edit: Nevermind. It was the alternator belt that coincidentally snapped. It works 😁
I just did this on my Mazda 3 2014.
Or, you can wrap the metal connector in a non conductive material and remove nothing
The switch doesn't work using conduction, but rather the tab is physically pressed activating a switch.
This is why people have trouble resetting istop after changing their battery.
Istop not will not work with hood opened
I keep my battery charged even when no in use and I the I stop still flashes amber .
It disables the alarm system. Tried it.
I have done it, but i-stop is still flashing yelow :(. Mazda 5 (2015)

Didn’t work for me either 2014 mazda 3
Not working. Still blinking istop
Or you could just press the button on the dash to disable istop …..
still blinking amber for me
Just fixed the i eloop light by cleaning the battery terminals
My terminals looks fine. The car has been sitting for about two months. Could that be the cause of i-Eloop message?

Oh that's disappointing. What year is it?

why even include something like this lol most of the people i know that have mazdas with istop do this.....

This doesn't work

I think the istop is brilliant, why anyone would want to disable it is beyond me
The deep cycle battery is double the price of a normal battery. So, the extra $250 you pay on the cost of a battery every 3 years, is equal to or more than the cost of the fuel saving, depending on how much driving you do & the type of driving you do, city or country.
also fuks up ya starter and ring gear 10 times quicker which are big bucks.
And now your airbags will also be disabled.
That would not be the case. In a front impact that switch would get damaged so the system would not be designed to cancel airbag activation.
wrong, nothing to do with airbags, you are fake news. do you work for CNN?
U live in a f uckin aviary??
Great tutorial ❤❤❤❤ Thanks😊
Why would you want to disengage the I-Stop? They are there for a reason, to shut the engine off when you are at the lights ect, to reduce polution and save fuel. And you think you are smart. But your not.
🤣
