Patti Smith - 25th Floor (live) [flawed intro] + Interview + Because the Night (live) [1978]

  • [Mono] Two live performances taken from "The Old Grey Whistle Test", as broadcast on USTV, for "The Midnight Special". Includes a short interview by Lisa Robinson.
While the footage has some visual glitches, and the beginning of "25th Floor" is missing a few seconds, there did not seem to be any other version of this song on UA-cam, so here it is, for better or worse. "Because the Night" appears elsewhere in better quality, but is included, as the original broadcast intended.

She deserves the status of one of the most exciting rock performers on the planet. To me , she is up there with Jagger and Iggy in her ability to commit completely to the intensity of the moment and channel that energy....THAT is why the kids go crazy....they can FEEL it
Coming through her. Patti and I share the same birthday, maybe that's why I get her, Lol..
So glad the prophetess is still with us.

Some of us discover Patti later in life and then we have the pleasure of reaching back into her early work. In this same year Patti appeared on Tom Snyder's "Tomorrow" show. That is one of my favorite interviews. Patti is at times lovably awkward and then she launches into a philosophical monologue. "This woman has real dimensions!" In a world of talentless wannabes and ditzy personalities Patti Smith is courageously authentic. I can listen to "Dancing Barefoot" over and over and it always makes me happy to hear her.

    * We met in 1971 after my first poetry performance, Lenny accompanying me on electric guitar. Sandy Perlman was sitting cross legged on the floor , dressed in leather , Jim Morrison style.
After the performance , he told me I should front a rock n roll band but I just laughed and told him I already had a good job working in a book store."

Why didn't I heat about her till now? I like her more than Mick Jagger,. Well I never really cared for Mick's style. For musical poets, I preferred Leonard Cohen over Bob Dylan. She is a bit more like a cross between Mick Jagger and Bob Dylan. Her humanity is one of her greater assets, like Dylan, and Cohen. I'm pretty sure Jagger's a fairly kindly guy, but I just don't feel that part of him when he sings, say like I do with the Beatles. Rock and roll to me is more pre Beatles. There are more Rock and Roll songs inserted into the 6o's, 70's and early 80's than were actually produced by "bands". I know that was a naive sounding statement, but a lot of non-rock and songs were done by poets, balladeers, egomaniacs, creative geniuses musucally, or word-wise, but not all of it is rock and roll.
It looked to me, by Patti doing this song that her poetic ways were overtaken by REAL rock and roll.

She looks like the lost Ramone sister whose music was a combination of The Doors and The Pretenders.
I enjoy her music but she has the opposite problem Prince has. She is viewed as more than what she is where Prince was never fully appreciated for his wide talents until his death.
When you think of the 60's and 70's it seems like women in music today have gone backwards. Some are good but they are not unique or pushing the envelope. Of course you could say that broadly about music today. This is probably why you hear a lot of 60's through 80's music, with a sprinkling of 90's, being played everywhere still.

Little Lulu you never heard of Patti? Where were you? She exploded when she went a bit commercial with because the night. Bruce Springsteen wrote it for her as far as I know. Punk emerged with a bang in what 76/77. I guess it just depends what kind of environment you are living in. There are lots of things going on now I wouldn’t have a clue about because I amnt following the media chain to see them or mixing with people who will ever make me aware of them. Doesn’t change the fact they are here and happening. Just not for me but I couldn’t say it was wrong because I wasn’t aware
