This era of SNL was the greatest and Gilda - to me - was the greatest of that group. Everything that she did was hilarious from this song to Rosanna Rosanadanna. So sad that we lost her so young.
I remember watching this during the original broadcast with a bunch of friends. We were indulging in the herb (pot) and then this came on. Needless to say, we ALL laughed so hard and continued laughing all night. Gilda was just the greatest! That underarm hair was a nice touch!
True confessions... I was a wee lad when Gilda did her Candy Slice on SNL. Her parody of Patti Smith is what actually turned me on to Patti Smith! I eventually heard the Horses album which reminded me so much of Candy Slice. And then a little light bulb appeared over my pointed head... "Oh... wait a minute!" Sigh... I miss you Gilda.
I saw Patti Smith at the beginning of her career. This is a great parody. Yeah, she was all about Mick. AND Mick. AND Brian. AND Charlie. I was in the front row at a small college bar in San Diego. Patti was spitting on the audience, and the guys were in adoration. I'm proud to say I ducked! I don't remember her as having a reputation as a druggy or drunk, though.. She was very tight. Her band were kind of zombied-out, though. Totally quaalude. I figured that was for show. Gilda forever!!
Ha, that's great. I remember hearing stories about Patti's earlier performances. I wasn't a fan until years later. I just saw Patti live last month. Wish I had seen her early on.Love her now and Mick and Brian 😃. I remembered this SNL. Thanks for sharing your story!
She was indeed very tight at the very beginning. The two years before she quit for a while in 1979 she was often VERY fucked up on stage. She probably saved her life by leaving the business at that point. She had had a serious accident in 1977 and that surely didn't help--self-medicating and all. Glad she made it.
@@joefelice5062 Yeah, I was surprised that "How about a little tootski" made it past the censors. Not the words so much, but the action that accompanied them. 😮😉

Gilda was a star whose brightness still shines to this very day! Wonderful comedian and a very sincere person. Thank you for sharing your art with the world. 💕
Those female rockers were gaining a reputation like Gilda elbowing Dolly's titties, and Olivia Quarles there were plenty of spray haired blondes like Olivia Newton John etc,... a great parody.
Was that Tom? I wondered, but didn't go back and look. Speaking of which, I saw something on youtube the other day from the 80s which I never even knew existed. Al Franken doing a pretty good Mick Jagger impression, with Tom Davis on guitar not even attempting to look like Keith. Check it out.
I've always loved Gilda and have seen the "Gimme Mick" more than a few times. This, however, is the first time I ever knew that Rick Nelson was on that show. (I was on a submarine when it aired.) I always liked him and I miss his talents.
I actually saw Gilda do that number live, when she had her show "Gilda Live" on Broadway. Revealing my age here, but Im grateful for the chance to have seen her live.
John Belushi doing Elvis Presley while looking like the singer from the last three years of his life. That fits so much it punches right in the stomach...
According to Patti's autobiography, she was never into drugs and actually quite religious! But that aside, Gilda was amazing and I actually loved the song!
Correct. And as much as I loved Gilda, who IS a legend, Patti was not a drug user or drinker. This performance while funny isn't completely an accurate portrayal of Patti Smith.
Its funny that Patti was the first SNL musical guest and they thought she was a joke. But Patti does live for the Stones. She also loves The Dead and Dylan
I'm reading Patti Smith's autobiography "Just Kids". She writes very well and gives a clear description of her early life in NYC living with Robert Mapplethorpe. A well-read and articulate writer. I havent reached her stage as a singer. Her version of Because the Night is great.
Probably one of the top ten SNL performances in SNL history, this skit was great on all levels, the cast's performances, the writing, wow they all got down that time. They references to coke use by ms Olivia Quarles, the Elvii, Bob Marley obsessed with Dolly's hooters exceptional performances

It does come across as funny especially as a golfing event, but the idea of "Rockers against Drugs" in itself isn't a bad one. In fact something like that already DID exist - it was called the "Straight Edge" punk rock movement.
