- In this interview Patti Smith tells the wonderful story of her first encounters with Robert Mapplethorpe, who became her lover and friend, and who is celebrated in her memoir 'Just Kids'.
When Patti Smith shares the story of her first encounters with Robert Mapplethorpe, who was not a famous photographer back then, her feelings are visible to the audience at the Louisiana Literature festival. She also talks about the loss of Robert and calls ‘Just Kids’ a story of unconditional friendship.
Patti Smith (b.1946) is an award-winning American punk rock musician, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock scene with her debut album ‘Horses’ in 1975. Smith fuses rock and poetry in her work, and has been dubbed the ”punk poet laureate” as well as ”the godmother of punk.” In 2007 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2010 Rolling Stone magazine put her on the 47th place of their list of 100 Greatest Artists. Among her many albums are ’Horses’ (1975), ’Radio Ethiopia’ (1976), ’Easter’ (1978), ’Gone Again’ (1996) and ’Banga’ (2012). Smith is also the author of several books, including ’Woolgathering’ (1992), ’Just Kids’ (2010) - which won the National Book Award and describes her relationship to her lover and friend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe - and ’M Train’ (2015).
Patti Smith was interviewed by Christian Lund at the Louisiana Literature festival, at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark in August 2012.

I like how the interviewer never interrupted her telling a long story and just letting her be. We need interviewers who listen.
She's such a wonderful storyteller. I will never get tired of this story.
Their relationship is so touching. I love "Just Kids". I read it at least once a year, every summer, it's so filled with authenticity, graciousness, the interaction between Patti and Robert is just so beautiful. It always fills my mind with positive energy, and the love/friendship, whatever you wanna call it, it's so heartwarming. Bless you, Patti. Such a beautiful soul.
I love the way she speaks.. Wonderful storyteller.
Completely agree.
A layer at best
She tells this exact story in Just Kids which is such an amazing book, perhaps my favorite book I've read this year. Highly recommend!
There's truly something beautiful about Patti Smith. Her sincerity is integral in everything that she does. Her words, the way she carries herself, everything. There isn't a single thing about Patti that isn't beautiful and sincere. A real once in a generation kind of person.
I love the way Patti uses the English language.
I agree she is so eloquent.
johnny5057 : Articulate . 🙂
Indeed .....although you can hear she's from the U.S. ,she hasn't got that usual American woman drawl ......her English sounds universal. Which came with age , around '76 she still had that New Yoik accent, which suited her also (then) ....but wisely got rid off ....
She speaks of true, unconditional love, friendship and acceptance. Beautiful.
This is such a beautiful story. I am so taken by these two people and the era they were young in. Love.
As I am part way through Robert Mapplethorpe's biography, so this is particularly poignant..Patti's way of expressiing herself in this honest and clear way is an inspiration to us all...to just say it like it IS, for goodness sake...and just know that we are all special, a miracle ans so any attempt at pretense can only dilute who we really are. Thank you Patti..xx Timbo
she seems like the coolest, chillest person ever.
Great book "Just kids" Great woman, Patti Smith
Isn't she wondeful.
Wow she looks like such an amazing person and the way she tells her story is just wonderful. I have never seen anyone describe all the aspects of love like she did. God bless her.

Beautiful story. I've read Just Kids, and I've listened to the cd audiobook version. I laughed and I cried throughout the story. :)

Thanks Patty Smith, and whoever sent this video. I didn't realize she had an autobiography. I do have her 1st three albums on CD. They are usually with me on long drives. I have only 1 of her best of 2 CD set. I wore out the other CD. I always have read her magazine article s when I find them. Her music is alot of fun. I just think she is great.

Patti Smith and Joey Ramone are the same person and Soylent Green is people.
He maybe a very good friend to Pattie, but actually he had not the best character and intentions, also he could be very mean and parasitic to others.
I avoided peoples like him my whole life, the best decision i've ever made. 🤣

We're living in very strange times, where it seems to be "in" to be "diverse".
I belong to the older generation and have seen it all. We would have had a good laugh about the world today.
I'm glad and thankful that i was young in the 60th and 70th.
She's married with two daughters.
@@delilasloan8914 One daughter and a son.
