  • Can we restore the fractured trust in science and steer public health back to its noble roots? Welcome to Heterodox Out Loud. Today, we are joined by Sandro Galea, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.P.H, who provides insights that challenge us to confront the post-pandemic skepticism clouding the scientific community.
In this episode, we will delve into a conversation that dissects how the clamor of political bias and social media frenzy has overshadowed the value of nuanced scientific discourse during COVID-19. Dr. Galea, through his book "Within Reason: A Liberal Public Health for an Illiberal Time," calls for a return to empirical rigor and liberal principles in public health, principles that are currently at odds with our polarized world.
As we unravel the tense interplay between public health mandates and individual liberties, Dr. Galea advocates for radical transparency that acknowledges the trade-offs and complexities inherent in our decisions. Today, we challenge you to reevaluate what it means to trust science and ask: how do we rebuild a foundation of credibility in the face of fear and division?
    IN THIS EPISODE:
    • Language and Ideology in Dialogue
    • Public Health's Role and Influence
    • Challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic
    • Liberalism and Public Health Philosophy
    • Crisis of Trust and Communication
    • Public Health Reformation

This is a terrific interview. I appreciate the sincere effort made to engage in this difficult topic. As a mental health professional with a community health background and retired professor, I do not think that public health authorities did a “fantastic” job. The lasting damage to the mental health of individuals and families is incalculable. Mere charts and graphs will never be able to capture the real, and probably generational, negative effects on mental health and human flourishing caused by the approach to the pandemic that we took in this country. Nevertheless, I admire the effort Dr. Galea has made to reflect thoughtfully on our behavior as a country in the hope of making incremental progress toward better public health decision-making in the future.

"Trust Science" is an oxymoron no self-respecting scientist would say. Science is the opposite of "Trust", and requires rigorous peer reviewed testing by others. Let's see the data.

Public health's "finest hour" is insultingly wrong.
The loss of trust was *richly deserved* and will not be recovered by pretending that Public health was actually amazing, and the public are wrong in their 'eyes & ears' assessment.
I would struggle to claim a "finest hour" since the "fat makes you fat" claim of my youth, which helped to push incredibly unhealthy, highly processed alternatives to actual food.
Friends of mine STILL drink semi-skimmed milk and buy margarine-style spreads, because they "try to eat healthy".
"Plant-based" alternatives are the new version of this.
One for the invisible 👎 meter.

In 2021, we were in Boracay Island and masks were mandated for all parts of the island BUT when your feet is on the water along the beach (not swimming but just walkin), you may remove the mask 😅

You do know some of your 'public health' colleagues have determined that it is 'ethical' to implement policy and procedures WITHOUT the consent or knowledge of the public in the name of 'the public good'?....You have read the arguments in Bioethicists Journals?...I am continually censored when I mention this or cite the journal articles...

The mildest of conversations on an outrageous failure. My sense here is of an effort to shore up the reputation of a profession and of institutions when accountability for malpractice and malfeasance is in order.

The creators of Ivermectin won the Nobel prize in 2015 for the millions of people it had saved from things like roundworms and malaria.
You are free to look these things up on the internet, and not just take the word of some talking head. It won't hurt you to research for yourself.

I don’t recall any US public official claiming certainty in dealing with Covid. I wish that the good doctor had provided an example of his claim.

"After a strict process, the FDA has reaffirmed its findings that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective, and the FDA has given its full and final approval." - President Joe Biden, 8/23/2021 from the White House in support of mandates.

How about Francis Collins' (then-director of the National Institutes of Health) response to the Great Barrington Declaration?
      From the WSJ:
“This proposal from the three fringe epidemiologists . . . seems to be getting a lot of attention - and even a co-signature from Nobel Prize winner Mike Leavitt at Stanford. There needs to be a quick and devastating published take down of its premises,” Dr. Collins wrote. “Is it underway?”
These researchers weren’t fringe and neither was their opposition to quarantining society. But in the panic over the virus, these two voices of science used their authority to stigmatize dissenters and crush debate. A week after his email, Dr. Collins spoke to the Washington Post about the Great Barrington Declaration. “This is a fringe component of epidemiology,” he said. “This is not mainstream science. It’s dangerous.” His message spread and the alternative strategy was dismissed in most precincts.

I’d say that’s at least half right, so thank you. I wonder what Biden would have said if asked whether his remarks are tantamount to certainty.

The ones that come to mind are the rather confident remarks that they didn't think it was airborne and that masking wasn't necessary. Which we later learned was something they told us to try and reduce the amount of panic buying of masks so they would be more available to medical staff early on.

You can't restore confidence - you broke it too hard. Doctors are no more clever than the rest of us. They just did a different degree. Get off your soap boxes, share the data, and we'll work it out for ourselves. These days I read the medical papers for myself and will continue so to do.

What sounds really funny to me are these comments undermining the knowledge, the expertise and the experience of those who are experts because they studied a subject during several years and practice a profession in line of their knoweldge. It is because of experts, of very capable people, that we are where we are in terms of humankind achievements and civilization.

    • @doubleandy
      @doubleandy Місяць тому

Experts are fallible. Yes, we are where we are today due to advancement of knowledge by experts, but we also find ourselves in a position where a large portion of people have lost trust in experts due to their mishandling of the pandemic. The experts brought it upon themselves
