CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Daniel (Tom Atkins) desperately pleads with TV stations to take the Silver Shamrock commercial off the air before it kills all the children watching it.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A week before Halloween, an older man named Harry Grimbridge (Al Berry) is wounded by a mysteriously dispassionate group of assailants in an industrial parking lot. After receiving treatment at a local hospital from Dr. Dan Challis (Tom Atkins) -- a hard-drinking divorced father of two -- Grimbridge is killed by an assassin who later sets himself on fire. Blowing off his own kids, Challis teams up with Grimbridge's daughter, Ellie (Stacey Nelkin), to find out why the middle-aged toy salesman was murdered. The duo's search soon leads them to a Halloween-mask factory run by inventor and practical joker Conal Cochran (Dan O'Herlihy). In between bouts of passionate lovemaking, Ellie and Challis begin to realize that the sinister old businessman has something other than treats in mind for America's kids -

I was impressed he was able to convince two of the stations to stop airing the commercial. With the plethora of cable channels, satellites and internet, you wouldn't even be able to slow it down today.
IKR? I'm sure in this day and age he would have a much more troublesome job shutting down all the platforms! I can imagine the last word in the remake being 'TWITTER!!!'
@Keystone79 But would anyone know about that just an hour later?
Absolutely.....the commercial fodder has exceeded the actual programming.
@@andrewbrown2888 I don't quite get what you're saying.
I tore it out.
That ending, that final "stop it!!!!!" always gives me chills. You can feel his despair. It gets me every single time.
IG?
Buy silver shamrock stock.
He has to be thinking of his kids in this scene. He tried to warn his ex wife to throw away their masks, who just dismissed his claims as the ramblings of a drunkard.
Same.
I love this film. It's really underrated.
That one kid who chose to go as Darth Vader: *well don't you all look stupid now!?*
Tom Atkins performance in this scene is so underrated.
Great actor, he was great as the mayor in oz also
He frightens you, because he looks and sounds frightened. Terrific actor
What made this movie so realistic and disturbing is that he wasn't anything like the hero's of that time, just a regular guy most can relate to who stumbled onto something nefarious. The 80's was filled with the "I'm tougher than you" muscle guys like Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme, Segal, Chuck Norris...etc. One of the most disturbing ending of all time.
@@D33Lux Now I'm imagining a version of the film where Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks Cochran and saves the day. Damn you.
He looks like Josh Brolin / Llewelyn Moss in No Country For Old Men
I love this movie because it breaks the rules of cinema. The hero loses and children die, nobody sees that coming when they watch this for the first time.
To be fair the viewers don't know if the commercial was ever turned off the air. So the scary part is you don't know...
Tom Atkins says it turns off lol
@@trayweathersby7490 Exactly. We’re led to believe that many children watching the last station were killed, but the film never confirms or denies it. It’s the ultimate cliffhanger. Films are always ten times better when they actually activate your imagination…instead of dulling it by showing you EVERYTHING.
And, that last, bone-chilling scream of “STOP IIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!”, staring straight into the camera, knowing that his kids at home and thousands of others were seconds away from dying a horrible death…man, that’s horrifying. A fine bit of acting from Tom Atkins, too.
@@mystical9054 Exactly 💯
@@mystical9054 I can not believe it bombed when it came out in theaters. I guess everybody was so butt hurt there was no Michael Myers but this is actually my favorite Halloween movie.
I absolutely adore this ending. That Silver Shamrock theme is not only a great example of how music can serve a story, but how public domain sometimes works in favor of the creator. John Carpenter was on a deadline and couldn't make a jingle on time. Worried about paying for rights or being sued, he simply just took London Bridges and sped it up, and the end result just works so well.
1:11 This bit in particular, I love how the theme just builds and builds tension until it just explodes.
Actually... I hear "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
i’m actually disappointed at the reception of this movie when it first came out. yeah people wanted michael myers and were probably disappointed. but as a stand-alone movie, it’s really freaking good.
But wouldn’t it have made one strange sequel to H2? The trailer for H3 confused the hell out of me…
@@SYSD723 The ending was so anticlimactic.
It's just that every kid who watches this obviously dies while all over the United States.
@@Kaijufan360 agreed
@@SYSD723 is this even in the same universe as Halloween or it was never even canon to begin with
@@Kaijufan360 lmao you finally watched the movie after everyone here told you off, little girl...
Originally in the credits there was suppose to be endless screams of many children. Imagine if they actually went with it. Truly a horror movie experience. I will watch Halloween3 over every other sequel in the Halloween Film series. Happy Halloween Silver Shamrocks 🎃.
damn, they shouldve gone with it
That way scarier
millions and it would have the highest kill count on deadmeat
@@alexh8503 Sallee Young (of Demented) or Stefanie Powers (of Hart to Hart) wanted to play a news anchor and reporter in Tales from the Crypt's unused/rejected episode with a similar plot to this film; in the ending, she went to the gas station and calling a phone to the television networks to turn off the dangerous company's commercial on each channel, yelling with "Stop it!".
@@Dracovenatrix the novelization did referred to about the screaming, starting from the town, to the state, and then spreading nationwide.
This movie was wayyy ahead of its time; this could have been a Black Mirror episode today!
Tharonhianente Barnes finally i have found someone mentioning black mirror on this video
Good call!!!
Agreed. The whole anthology angle that Carpenter and Co. were going for with this film is still a great idea IMO.
Mirrors current society quite well. I wonder if this film was meant to be a prediction.
YES
His children had masks too.
I remember the ending used to show them dying as well... but I can't find that anywhere.
No way
No way what?
was it his kids or like a alternative ending
The ending I know is, the channel that's still on is the channel his children are watching, that's why he was so desperate to get it off. The other ending I never saw.
I hope I'm not the only one who enjoyed this movie.
Tyler Clement i like it but its not better than michael myers
It's unarguably better than 5, 6, resurrection, the remake, and its sequel. So Michael Myers clearly isn't the key to making a good movie. A solid script and competent directing tend to be more important
Tyler Clement I enjoyed it too I don't know why
Tyler Clement better than the rob zombies Halloween 2 however imo this is the second worst movie in the franchise
sOcs Razor I disagree the second worse to me is Halloween: Resurrection
I'm glad that people now tend to look back on this movie much more fondly. I think the Halloween anthology idea had a fair bit of promise, which this movie demonstrated. This ending, in particular, is perfect for the film: the joy of an apparent success, only to be quickly foiled by a cliffhanger that promises despair
What I love about this ending is it’s left to your imagination after that final “STOP IIIIIIIIIIIIT”!!! Did millions of children die around the world? Or did he manage to save them all? Your choice. Maybe a bit of both happened, but that’s what makes this ending still stick with you.
most likely the children died since the flashing pumpkin stayed for a while.
Just met the man himself, pure class act! Awesome guy Tom Atkins.
Always wanted to meet the guy, prob one of the best actors of the 80’s
He looks like Josh Brolin in No Country for Old Men
@@WizardOfHumor1989 I believe Jane Fonda or Stefanie Powers or the obscure Sallee Young going to play news reporter in Tales from the Crypt's rejected episode, and in the ending, she yells "Stop it!" to the television networks on the phone at the gas station in attempt to turn off the evil company's commercial.
One of the most memorable twist endings in horror movie history.
I wish that was my scream
Not really a twist, just a dark ending
@@tony_dogs What happened to that guy screaming from the phone?
@@tony_dogs Like why is he angry?
Emerson Barahona
Long story short, if that commercial airs, millions of TV viewers will die, and he's pleading with the person on the phone to take the commercial off the air
Halloween wasn't originally supposed to be just about Micheal Myers. Each Halloween movie was supposed to have it's own unique storyline different from the following prequel. Everyone loved Micheal Myers so much they they included him in the sequels which is sad because it took away what John Carpenter really wante the Halloween movies to be about.
Yes Carpenter wanted Michael dead after 2 and had the idea for the franchise to be like Tales from the Crypt
That is 100% true. I wonder what they would have done next after this instead of "The Return Of Michael Myers".
No, Carpenter wanted it all to end after Halloween 1 but he said he continued with 2 because of the money. The idea for the anthology series wasn’t considered until Carpenter finished his role in the movies with 2 by essentially killing off Myers
Yeah it's disappointing it didn't happen
Johnlindsey289 it’s funny because Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street did exactly this with F13th: the Series and Freddy’s Nightmares. Who remembers that?
As much as you try to slow down mass consumerism, there's always going to be one last commercial. Brilliant ending.
Goddamn, it's like something out of a Stephen King novel.
Very interesting analogy. I can definitely see the resemblance.
YES!!! EXACTLY!! I thought the same.
Aaron pfund Hmmm... good one
The name of the novel please
I thought the exact same thing. Reminded me of a Stephen King story, likely a short story
It came so close to being a resolved happy ending, albeit with him looking to people like he's a crazy guy. But it ended up being the dark ending it was. Good horror movie.
Perfect ending. What horror is all about.
It was a very good movie. Can you imagine how terrible if it had been like Friday the Thirteenth? Michael Myers was never supposed to be invincible. In fact Halloween was supposed to be a stand alone film. There wasn't supposed to be a series of Michael Myers movies.
@@christopherfoote4643 I can't believe that just after two Friday the 13th movies, people expected or even wanted the Halloween franchise to be exactly the same. Michael clearly died in the second movie. Now let's move on to something different and unique. A lot of strange interesting things could happen on Halloween, aside from a guy wearing mask and killing people. Instead we're gonna have two competing franchises that are way too similar and repetetive.
People, especially horror fans are so narrow-minded it's just sad.
@@Billy_Lenz Halloween III was a departure from Michael Myers. It was a new idea that apparently wasn't popular. I liked it, mostly. It was a strange twist but it made for a better movie than watching Michael Myers run roughshod. You're right. It's sad. It's incredibly sad. They dehumanized a person. Does anyone really like the idea of a murderer going around and killing innocent people without cause?
@@Billy_Lenz I quit watching the Friday the Thirteenth after the first two installments. Tye first one was about the mom. The second was about Jason. Neither were especially interesting. Neither really captivates me. Mostly they were just exhibitionist movies. It takes a talented director to make a compelling horror movie bit there are some that fit the bill. Not all are horrible. Wes Craven wasn't terrible even though I mostly defeated Freddy Krueger. It was an interesting riff on a familiar theme. Actually he was probably parodying it. Freddy Krueger was supposed to be sort of a straight man of sorts. So you have to weigh that into consideration. Wes Craven was pretty smart. Most of his movies were compelling. He was unique.
One of the most underrated movies of all time.
Yurick Hunt ikr
With out a doubt!
Most definitely!
Amen
Just like Maximum Overdrive. I've never seen this movie BTW.
Such a scary cliffhanger (or ending, i suppose) who agrees?
LeamTRAP the humantronic I agree, but can you say that the ending is ambiguous and scary?
LeamTRAP the humantronic it ended that way because john carpenter never got to do the sequel he originally wanted halloween to have a variety of stories but the prudocers said no stick with micheal myers
LeamTRAP the humantronic that movie was so goddamn stupid
I agree, definitely. We can only imagine what happens next!
From what I heard instead of music during the credits it would of been the endless screams of dying children. Making it clear he did in fact fail to stop it
He played a great character for this movie. Great acting! 👏🏻
Absolutely!
I don't give a balls what anyone says about this movie, it's a great watch on Halloween night, and that's one hell of an ending
I find it hilarious. Honestly I enjoyed the movie now compared to when I first watched it knowing why the movie was made.
When I first saw this movie as a teenager, it traumatized me, imagining the aftermath. I couldn't get the horror out of my head, and I was days getting over it. It's like the ending of Night of the Living Dead or The Mist.
When I first saw it me and my friend kept yelling “STOP IT!!!” Jokingly
Or Mirror, Mirror 1990
The ending of The Mist was truly heartbreaking
better said, the ending was like invasion of the body snatchers. when he shouts, especially at the camera, it reminds me of the movie invasion of the body snatchers when the main characters shouts at the viewer "theyre already here!! youre next!!".
@@anchorpoint3631 Ever heard of Creepshow where the dad who slaps his kid with the titular comic book?
Tom Adkins thinks the film has a happy ending, while the director thinks it was unhappy. Are the children of America saved or doomed? YOU make the call!!
I think it’s up to personal preference on how you like a movie to end personally I like happy endings so I’m trusting Tom but that’s the morbid beauty of this ending it’s up to you
I think it's obvious. People die.
@@christopherfoote4643 Yeah but i don't think it was that many.
There Saved.
It was running too long and that was just channel 3, it was more than likely still running on other channels too. I think people definitely died 😟 Also Tom's acting was fantastic in this movie
What is scary is that something similar obviously without snakes and stuff, is technically possible, a micro circuit which responds to an encoded sound and maybe releases a poison or something. It was probably not even beyond the capabilities of electronics engineers in the 80s so it certainly is now.
Good point. This movie is so scary because it’s totally plausible
If only it wasn't called Halloween 3 this would've been an instant classic.
Agree, and it's super low rating on IMDB is an absolute travesty.
This movie was produced by Hill and Carpenter and the Story actually had Halloween as the main Focus. They had every right to call the movie "Halloween 3".
@@hellraiser_9261 yeah the Halloween series was originally gonna be about Halloween monsters like mummies
They should have called it like this
The shape: a Halloween story
The shape II: a Halloween story
Season of the witch: a Halloween story
I think if they went with that title it would have been way better and people would have got the hint. They just did a bad job advertising it.
@@taylorpack7705 yeah it would have been better that way. Like how Ryan Murphy does every season of American Horror Story with a different story
Right when he looked at the camera and yelled stop it it gave me shivers such amazing spine chilling ending ..but this is me when a annoying song plays it won’t stop
EPIC ENDING!!!
😜
What a great performance, especially in this ending scene. You can really feel the desperation coming off him.
Gotta respect the dude for at least being able to stop 2 channels from airing. However there’s no way to stop the 3rd channel.
Because the third station was owned by Silver Shamrock company
@@everardoluna9776 I thought the company was destroyed when the factory went up
This film was very dark and gruesome. Too bad they didn't just call it Season of the Witch. We could have been treated to a new scary movie every Halloween, instead of the endless stream of Michael Myers sequels. Granted, those weren't all terrible, but this film was original.
Imagine a whole franchise for SotW.
Season of the Witch 5: Witches be Trippin'.
I agree. This movie should have been called; "Season Of The Witch", instead of Halloween 3, but they were going to make the series in to an anthology, which I think would have been interesting. However due to the fans screaming that they wanted Michael Myers back they just went back to basics.
Phil Anderson it was going to be originally scary movies like the werewolf
4-6 and resurrection are complete trash
The only good halloween films were the first two, the rest were uninspired garbage
Tom Atkins told fans at a convention he was able to stop the third channel. He told them he knew it was left at ambiguous state but he stopped it.
I thought Michael Myers was on the set and stopped it
+Courtney Gibson Jr omg, Michael just pops up and kills anyone anyways after stopping the commercial.
I guess it’s nice that there’s some closure but I think knowing whatever happens takes away from the impact that this ending gives.
Courtney Gibson Jr or maybe the marathon of Michael Myers would interrupt the commercial at the end. So Michael Myers would actually save everyone at the end lol.
i prefer the darker ending. not everything gets a happy ending. i will respectfully disagree with Tom.
The way the gas station clerk just smiling while the kids getting candy 😂
Tom should have yanked the kid away from the tv to scold him / stop him from channel surfing.
it was the 80s. quirkiness in every horror movie of that decade
@@anchorpoint3631 Murder, She Wrote should open with Sallee Young yelling "Jessica!" on the phone at the gas station rather than being a performer in a nightgown we got.

Yet another reason I am sad that I'm not a billionaire. I would absolutely pay to have the Silver Shamrock commercial aired on prime time just to freak people out. :)
No one’s gonna talk about the kid driving the car at 0:24?
Just noticed the kid driveing the car after all the years
Easily one of the most iconic parts of this movie is him yelling stop it
I'm one of those fans who discarded this movie because it didn't feature Michael Myers but when I watch it now, nearly 30 years later, the music, that ending, the campiness, I've grown to enjoy it a lot.
That climbing music, and those screams. Does anyone feels it's got to be one the most scary ending ever?
In my opinion, this ending was very sad, and horrifying.
In the end of the novelization all the kids wearing those silver shamrock masks are screaming in dying agony
At least he stopped the factory from continuing this in the future and probably significantly reduced the death count with some of the channels stopping the broadcast, so it wasn’t entirely a failure on his part; still pretty distressing though.
This is a great film on its own and is far better than the far fetched films which came afterwards..this is so much more plausible..
Trying to stop Halloween Resurrection from being made be like
If it was me who had directing the ending, I've would have done something like this.
Daniel: The 3rd channel, the commercial is still playing on channel 3, stop them. stop it, for God's sake stop it.
???: (On the line)... We can't.
Daniel: WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CAN'T?! THERE'S NO MORE TIME! STOP IT! STOP IT!!
???: We can't.
Daniel: WHY NOT?!?
???: Because you're too late to stop us.
Daniel: ! (Realizes that the guy on the phone works for the Silver Shamrock company)
???: Take your drink and have a goodnight, Doctor Daniel. *Hangs out*
Daniel: (See's the commercial intesifying) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

actually youre not wrong. its like a warning of mind control, especially going on today. indeed. when he shouts, especially at the camera, it reminds me of the movie invasion of the body snatchers when the main character shouts at the viewer "theyre already here!! youre next!!". same with this character as if he's warning everyone about a sect trying to harm children or mind control
Its theme on consumerism
I like “bad endings” sometimes because it’s rare to have the villain win. very interesting.:) I like it a lot.
I wish the rest of the Halloween series stuck to this anthology style
Tom Atkins' performance is the best part of this movie
This movie deserves a remake or something in the future
Sequel
Another big plot hole : would the people from a TV station would interrupt a commercial on the air simply because somebody calls to ask to stop it like Tom Atkin's character does? I like the movie anyway. :D
One of the most disturbing ending scenes i have ever seen, truly creepy
Tom Atkins looked so great in that 🍿
This movie gets a lot of unnecessary hate because it has nothing to do with Michael Myers
movieclips haven't done the original Halloween yet just the remaks
And the sequels.
Honestly Halloween 3 is a great movie, for a sequel that completely dropped everything from the previous entires, it’s a well and competently made movie, the cast is fine and the effects are like the music fantastic and the story is terrific, people just hate it because it doesn’t have Michael Myers
So sad there wasn't a sequel to this. I would of loved what happened next? The movie was just getting so damn good. But I guess if they did make a sequel. There wouldn't be much point. Because our hero just stopped the bad guy and everything he's worked on.
The world I would of imagine became a complete disaster when they couldn't stop the thing on TV so many children of died including people's parents.
The world is filled with horrible killing dangerous insects now. 😨 or did he stop it?
Steven Morris In guessing that the commercial went on.
Joseph Shmo cool thanks
What do you think of the anthology idea for the franchise?
Johnlindsey289 it would be a lot better
I heard that one of the people that made the film said that in the end the third channel stoped the comercial,
The most unbelievable thing is that two of the stations actually stopped the broadcast due to a random caller's frantic ravings.
It could be because they received reports that the SS factory had been destroyed. That or they received reports that people in the other time zones (East Coast, Central and Mountain) had died during the broadcast.
Imagine a sequel that takes place years later and the world is in post apocalypse because of what Cochran did. Dr Challis is still alive and the world is overrun with Silver Shamrock cult members that still want to finish Cochran's work.
My conclusion was that once the factory was destroyed, it made the devices in the masks not activate. But it was a good ending since the Doc didn't know. I didn't really like this movie for years, but I appreciate it now.
Well maybe most of the kids turned the TV off after the We Are Having Technical Difficulties screen went up.
I'm sure many many did but many did not.
The movie is ambigous, the ending of the book is not:
"Then there was only the sound of the rain outside in the endless blackness of the long night and, presently, the rising tones of a pitiful wail within and without, spreading across the station, the town, and the land without end."
This movie was so good I’ve seen it 8 times , the hero of the movie thinks he wins by trying to save everyone but in the end the villain wins even though he was killed
