it was for sure the revamped dragon fight, that made it way too different for it to be in the same category as 1.8 and under. the new combat system also most likely influenced but it was probably only the cherry on top.
You are correct! It was mainly because the dragon fight changed to be slower and more complex, and the strongholds spawned SO much farther away from spawn than they used to. People only got interested in running post-1.9 as a separate category when villager trading got revamped and let post-1.9 become a viable rival to pre-1.9.

You really can't emphasize how antithetical Minecraft is to the traditional popular speedrun game, I remember like just 3 years ago seeing a comment from a speedrun fan who clearly didn't watch MC speedruns denouncing a WR video as boring because MC is so RNG heavy. In my view the rise of this game is significant in the grander scope of all of speedrunning, that being the idea of games being so "RNG heavy" that they can't ever sustain a speedrun scene, let alone a large one, is kind of a dead argument now.
Everytime I see what vanilla minecraft looks like nowadays I feel old. I was playing back when the game first came out and have always been kinda baffled by how much it blew up. Because of the fact that I have only been playing modded minecraft since the update that added running it feels like vanilla is a whole different game. Still kinda creepy that there is a minecraft channel on one of the roku streaming apps and that my buddies kids are growing up watching minecraft youtubers. I guess it's the same with things like pokemon but it still feels so weird. Hell it feels weird that my buddies kid was playing video games at 2 and gets told bedtime stories by an amazon Alexa. This next generation is growing up completely integrated with technology. When I was first posting videos to youtube I had to walk to the local library and wait an hour for a 10 minute video to upload, now I'm hearing elementary kids talk about building a gaming rig. It's cool but at the same time scary how fast time flies by, can't wait to have the soul crushing moments like my mom had when she realized it was 40 years since the 80's, I'm already having them just realizing it's been 13 years since a lot of my favorite shows aired.
Hear, hear. It's crazy to imagine that the **invention** of full-colour photographs you don't need to get developed is in living memory for some of us. It's got to be a nightmare timelining every advancement we've had in tech over just the last century, and that's before we even get to how ubiquitous it's become for many thanks to optimisation and miniaturisation. Seriously, that thing you used to need to lug around, setting up an entire mini-booth for the right conditions in order to get a colourless snapshot of reality now sits snugly within a notepad-sized device that can take it just like that, as well as record motion and accurate colour instead of just taking a snapshot, and that isn't even its MAIN FUNCTION! Absolutely mental!
@@CharlesChaldea real talk, what is kinda scary is thinking about just how much things will advance from now. In my lifetime we went from vhs to dvd to blu-ray to everything being digital. Things are advancing at an exponentially fast rate.
@@zoidsfan12 Right?! Guess all we can do is hold on tight on this wild ride.
I think that speedrunning random-seed Minecraft is the most shaky when it comes to legitimacy. Technically, anything that is randomly generated, even stuff that is common, can be hacked in, with whatever is being used to tamper with the game being basically impossible to detect. The only reason a certain speedrunner's run was called as fake was because he was stupid enough to think that people would not question the fact that the "random" elements of his run were astronomically unlikely. (Frankly, given he was that dumb, he kind of deserved all of that R34). My advice would be to take ALL random-seed runs with a grain of salt, don't just blindly believe it as legit.
Which is why speedrunners should be required to use a form of anti-cheat that ideally could log any such thing. People have argued that this could still be circumvented, but if developed in a way where it's closed, connects somewhere else to confirm the game is clean and is alerted by efforts to stop this connection, that you'd still be required to stream the runs, and also is updated a lot, it would dissuade a lot of people from cheating because of the effort required to do so. Literally every game can be modded or hacked to give great RNG for a lot of things, Minecraft isn't unique in this, the issue isn't possibility (which is always there, no matter how many rules and requirements) but how easy it is to do so. Unlike the majority of the top speedrun games, cheating in MC is just a question of changing a few very accessible values in like a config file which are very open due to how friendly MC is to modding, while something like SM64 is not friendly to modding at all and requires changing stuff in the RAM (IIRC) which is beyond the scope for most people really, and because MC is ran on a computer unlike a lot of games, you don't even need extra hardware like GameGenie or GameShark to do it. Dream being caught was really just him being extremely arrogant and stupid, and even with his 0 effort cheating it still took a huge effort to prove it with math etc. He could have just done normal runs and then activated the cheats on his 1 last run and nobody would really know that it wasn't legit, and making a mod that's basically "keypress to activate Dream RNG" would be extremely simple in MC, even for someone without any programming skills.
Random seed are also the most common runs, set seed basically has there perfect seed already, there's isn't really a audience for actively streaming it, unlike random seed because of how much can change

People only got interested in running post-1.9 as a separate category when villager trading got revamped and let post-1.9 become a viable rival to pre-1.9.

Karl: "Movement in minecraft is quite basic"
Goldeneye: * look at the floor the entire time while speedrunning*
Goldeneye movement is far more advanced since you have to navigate smoothly and hug corners tightly (like racing lines) while blind to reduce lag but also look up and kill guards or do objectives when needed...then go back to blind perfect strafing.
Minecraft is simple by comparison. You can sprint jump. With full vision. And 100% flawless movement isnt even a must to be top 100.. or even wr.
the fact you have to look at the floor makes it less basic.

That donation music as the credits roll after getting the world record is gold
