JUDY GARLAND:'THAT'S ALL.' RARE. GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK.

  • Performed by Judy, taped October 11, 1963 for 'The Judy Garland Show'. Another rare performance, sung by Judy just this once. Perhaps there are other recordings that I don't know about. Judy had such a vast career it's almost impossible to know everything, and there is new material surfacing. ... She is an endless ocean of talent, having created music in almost every possible venue.
Words by Alan Brandt, music by Bob Haymes, 1952.
It has been covered by many jazz and blues artists, introduced by Nat King Cole. The song is part of the Great American Songbook.
I can only give you love that lasts forever
And a promise to be near each time you call,
And the only heart I own
    For you and you alone,
    That's all, that's all.
I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall,
And a love whose burning light
    Will warm the winter night,
    That's all, that's all.
There are those, I am sure, that have told you
They would give you the world for a toy.
All I have are these arms to enfold you
And a love time can never destroy
If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear,
You'll be glad to know that my requests are small.
Say it's me that you'll adore
    For now and ever more,
    That's all, that's all.

I've played this countless times to my son when he was just a baby. He is now 10. Today I have written him a small letter, has he becomes a teen, and stops listening to his old man, it's important for him to know that my love for him is forever. There is nothing, other than this song, that would express my feeling better.

Judy Garland can sing any song... she has such a tremendous talent. She can sing a newspaper article and it can land in a Broadway musical. There are times she narrates the lyrics but they still have a melody. She is a fantastic dancer her feet can execute any dance number like a breeze. Dancing seems a natural body movement to her. And boy she is naturally and contagiously funny, her punchlines are perfect. JUDY GARLAND IS THE BEST AND GREATEST PERFOMER OF ALL TIMES!!!

Thank you The Universe for the marvelous genius in every aspect of her fabulous life ! Hats off and down to my knees !

Judy was a great artist. Her ending was swift and tragic after the completion of her TV series. Within five short years, Judy ended up homeless in New York City. She was ill, broke, drug and alcohol addicted. She went from being one of the top show business personalities in the early 1960s to an unemployable pariah by the end of the decade. Her musical arrangements had been swiped and held for blackmail. She was unable to pay to get them back. David Begelman, her manager, did not end up homeless. Judy made over ten million dollars in the early 1960s and never saw a penny of it. David Begelman stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from Judy. Sid Luft, her former husband, did not end up homeless. Sid Luft gambled away hundreds of thousands of dollars and did not pay the IRS. Judy ended up in severe debt to the IRS and every dollar she earned later in life was confiscated by the government. Judy was ill with cirrhosis of the liver in 1968 when she jetted off to London to play The Talk of the Town. She was also ill with influenza and had to perform. She did her best in London and later in Scandinavia. The only good thing was that the IRS could not touch her earnings or hound her in England. Judy paid her own way to the very bitter end. Her last "husband" Mickey Deans was a delusional gay user. He was Judy's keeper, more than a husband. She was so ill at that time she could barely function. Judy had a strange life. She worked like a dog and supported her mother, father, sisters, and later her husband(s), her children, and her agents and managers. None of these people ever supported her or helped her. They just helped themselves till there was nothing left.

You know, PBS would be doing the public a great service if they repeated this series on Saturday evenings (like Mr. Welk). My parents were riveted to the sofa whenever Miss Garland was on TV, especially this '63-'64 series. Sid Luft had the tapes carefully stored and remastered...they're ready to dub to digital and air! I still tear up whenever I hear most versions of the song-the lyrics get to me each and every time.

It is interesting what Judy does with the lyrics in the final verse; She sings "If you're asking in return what I would want, dear, You'll be glad to know that my requests are small.", instead of "If you're WONDERING WHAT I'M asking in return, dear, You'll be glad to know that my REQUESTS are small" . I wonder if these are special lyrics that music arranger, Mel Torme, came up with for her, or if she just slipped and made a remarkable recovery.

One of the very best standards out there and Nat King Cole did it well, Sarah Vaughan did it really well, Frank Sinatra did it exceptionally well. My two favorite versions though are by Mel Tormé and Judy Garland. Though this is just outstanding, and Judy is hundreds of times the singer Mel is (she’s the greatest there ever was), I have to admit I slightly prefer Mel’s smooth, sweet version the most. Still, I love every note of this, damn near makes me cry. There’s only one Judy and they broke the mold when she was created. Nobody like her.

Of course one cannot fault this, but only enjoy n' respect it. There is no best, except of course we what each decide for ourselves what we enjoy the most. Sarah Vaughan's treatment of this tune on her early 70s recording "Live In Japan" is just extraordinary, albeit a different take. Sarah had sung this as a ballad much as well, but her up tempo approach is also stunning. Better than Ms.Garland or Mr. Cole? No. = but different. I'd leave a link but did not find it on youTube.

This was a nice episode because it reunited Judy with Ray Bolger. I amnot a Ray Bolger fan but it was great when they sang some of the songs from The Wizard of Oz.. Too bad they didnt get Jack Haley & Bert Lahr to join her. I read that in 1963 the woman who played Auntie Em commited suicide by placing a bag over her head and suffocated herself. She supposedly had terminal Cancer she was in her 80's. She looked old in the film.

@delux2222 It reall doesn't matter. It's very appropriate. Many singers change a few lyrics somewhat. It personalizes the song to the singer. Streisand incorporated a whole new verse into her version of "Send in the Clowns" that no one else sings. :) It's all about part of styling and originality. :)
