Wow, she's 38 yo here and so beautiful and singing beautifully too. She must have been a sight to see and hear in the nightclubs she performed in. Absolutely gorgeous!!!
I cannot take my eyes off her!!!! It's hard to imagine that a beauty such as Ms.Dandridge walked this earth, she was a stunning and rare beauty, that literally takes your breath away. No wonder she transcended boundaries, because her talent had none!!! Turning down the roll in The King and I, would have made her one of the biggest stars ever. Richard Zanuck in a two year process was going to have Dorothy Dandridge one of the greatest names to ever cross the silver screen. But in the words of Diahaan Carroll, she was the wrong color at the wrong time. Her legacy lives on through her majestic royal beauty. In my book, she will never be surpassed! Thank you ❤️ Ms.Dandridge for showing me what Black is , true excellence.
Probably one of my favorite performances. Her grace and warmth transcends and her ability to illustrate the song with her entire face and body. Not to mention, her beautiful voice. I see hints of what inspired the great Whitney.
*Wow... She was so beautiful here... Great voice. A bit of a "whisky" tone, which could have been from drinking? A real orchestra, too! None of that canned garbage... I was still a baby RIP*
Such a stunning woman. Loved her biopic when I was younger. I’ll never forget her tragic life story. There’s a lot of misery hiding behind that talent. 🫶🏾
A song introduced by Nat Cole to the great American Song Book collaborated by Bryant & Haymes and impeccably sung by Ms. Dorothy D! What more can you ask?
Dorothy Daniel and Marilyn Monroe both went thur hell in Hollywood attempting to express their craft Actors I loved both of these Beautiful Alluring Women I salute both of them
I know Soo Many would Love to see her performing on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1952. I think she performed a song called Get You Some Love or it could be called LOVE. I'm not sure. I just remembered watching a small clip from her biography on the Biography Channel in 1999. I wanted to see the whole performance in its entirety. Hopefully they will release it. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I’d love to see that one. Let’s hope it’s in the CBS archives as well. Dorothy Dandridge was in a different place personally and professionally when she made her debut on this show. Between that performance and this one she became a big movie star and experienced many ups and downs.
She’s a really capable singer . Reminds me a lot of Lena Horne in her singing it’s not revolutionary but really nice and controlled and I’d love to hear her over drinks . She was really beautiful also . Wish she had made more movies tho but that was how it was in those days
I’m amazed at how good a singer she was and with the right coaching, they could probably have used her own voice for both ‘’Carmen Jones” and “Porgy and Bess”.However, in those days, they dubbed everyone ; singer or not.Not that I’m complaining and there were some actors that I wish had been dubbed, e.g. Marlon Brando and Vanessa Redgrave, to name two.Thank you.
She died five years after this. It's sad that the performance can't simply be enjoyed without everybody timing how long she lived after this. It's an enjoyable performance for anyone who can watch it without focusing on her circumstances and death.
@@monilaninetynine3811I can do both thanks. Yes 🙌🏼 it was a beautiful performance but you can see the strain in her face from all she was going through. Life and self medicating was taking its toll
I was very curious about her. I looked her up and this is what I found. Dorothy Jean Dandridge was an American actress, singer, and dancer. She is the first African-American film star to be nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Actrss, which was for her performance in Carmen Jones. Dandridge performed as a vocalist in venues such as Cotton Club and Apollo Theater. In the 1960's Dandridge's life and career was wracked by divorce, personal bankruptcy, and the absence of offers of work. At age 42 she was found dead in her Hollywood apartment, either a suicide or a accidental drug overdose. She was also good friends with Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. There is a Dorothy Dandridge documentary found on her page about 45 minutes long, if you're interested. I just saw the beginning, but I'll watch it later.
Halle Berry played her in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge which won Emmys. Definitely worth checking out. And I definitely recommend Carmen Jones too. She was amazing in the film and her Oscar nomination was well deserved!
@@Lokicool382 Thank you, I will most definitely check both of them out. I Love Halle Berry! She is so Beautiful! I didn't enjoy typing the second half of her Dorothy's story. It made me so incredibly sad that this talented and beautiful woman's life ended so tragically. Thank you for sharing! 💖
@Robert...All right. But to me peoples of obvious mixtures are definitely another ethnic group and for that reason should form a census and send a rep to congress to voice their interests. So, no, I do not see her solely a "black woman."
She was so beautiful and such a great singer and dancer too. She had such a tragic life, with abuse from her husband, Harold Nicholas, the dancer. Most believe she died by suicide.
R.I.P. Sidney Poitier 😢 . He starred with her in the 1959 version of "Porgy and Bess" . That movie is somehow unavailable streaming, DVD etc. It's even unknown if a good copy exists. Very strange!
@@candy9986 You can find DVDs of it, but from what I understand, they are not complete and there is no official release. So it's "Buyer beware" for those bootlegs.
@@lavoniamullins1541 I think the original ran about 2hrs 20mins vs the 1:55 on YT. It's an MGM film. Amazon bought that library of films. Maybe Jeff Bezos can search the archives for us 😁. BTW, Poiter's vocal was dubbed in by Bobby Mcferrin's father.
Not really a 1st-rate production of the work by MGM, especially when compared to its other major music projects...the inferiority of the copies is merely a consistent reflection of this fact. Poitier did not want to do the movie and he frequently sited it as his least favorite; he did it though because it allowed him to do "The Defiant Ones."
I have since learned that the Lincoln Center in New York screened a copy of the film in 2019 as part of a new production of the opera. So a good complete copy does exist. The rumor has always been that Ira Gershwin hated the film and that he and later the estate suppressed any further releases of it. Sam Goldwyn also refused any requests for copies from MGM. He considered it a complete failure and just wanted it to be forgotten.
It's in a trio called The Dandridge Sisters that it was said she wasn't quite cordial to a member of that trio. But I enjoyed their singing "Undecided." nonetheless.
