It was probably a year before Judy died, when she came into the Penthouse Club called The Top Of The Town in the Shelton Towers Hotel, in New York City, where I was performing at the piano. Judy got up and sang with me for 2 hours. She stood right next to me and kept her small hand on my shoulder the entire time. I can still see it as clear as day... even the Mickey Mouse watch she was wearing. It was an unforgettable moment in my life...performing with the greatest of the Great. Wow!

Judy didn't have little hands, she had big hands. Slim hands, long slender fingers. I work with hands everyday, plus you can see how long her fingers are when she sings.

Terry H., you THINK it was a year before she died. How on earth do you not remember the date of what had to be the most thrilling experience of your life. I'm awful at remembering dates. But, that date would have been burned into my brain for eternity. I would have gotten her autograph and dated it. With all due respect, I question your story. Although, I hope it's true, what a great memory that has to be.

The only comparison is Liza is loud, but, often off key. I realize that a lot of Judy's fans want Liza to be another Judy, sorry folks Liza is another performer who is not ln Judy's class. No one is. Judy is one in forever, there will never be another one quite like her. She's been gone for 50 and 1/2 years and she continue's to get new fan's every year. She is pure magic.

"I played the State, the Capital, but people said -don't stop, until you've played the Palace you haven't played the top. For years I had it preached to me and drummed into my head -unless you played the Palace, you might as well be dead. A team of hoofers was the headline at the Majestic down in Dallas, but they cancelled the day their agent called to say, you can open a bill at the Palace. So it became the Hall Of Fame, the Mecca of the trade- when you had played the Palace, you knew that you were made. So I hope you'll understand my wondrous thrill, -cause Vaudeville's back at the Palace and I'm on the bill" -I love it!

I love your passionate response. Like you, I have often thought the studio audiences were staid and lukewarm in their reactions to Judy. Perhaps this was partly because back then people were a bit inhibited by the presence of cameras, tv monitors, lights etc, being in a tv studio was still quite a new experience. But I also think a lot of the studio audiences for her TV series were made up of TV industry types, CBS executives etc who were just a bit constipated. But, check out the medley "Be Clown/Once In a Lifetime" finale to another show in the series. At the end, Judy takes her curtain calls and comes right out to shake hands with the audience. It comes closer in emotion to how her live concert appearances actually were.
I agree with everything else you so eloquently say too btw!

end by coyle steve sanders. though this happened 56 years ago and i never knew her or her or her family. it was terrible to read today that some guy AT CBS that some dude named hank stromberg jr on her 20TH /last show sent a card saying you were great you re through , I read that and went WTF /ALSO THAT GUY / JAMES AUBREY CALLED HER THESE NAMES, WHO STOOD UP FOR HER / ALL THESE PEOPLE MAKING MONEY/ (according to the book ) her management was not there . just two dudes mort lindsey and some guy named bill tried to help her that day/ they probably dont even know that happened. ( bless them ) her hurt feelings/ I 'd be so hurt / She never wrote her book and so never discussed it/ show business is rough/ Im glad someone else wrote the BOOK// It does not look like she ever told anyone what happened. / her fans would have f___ED CBS UP I THiNK , woman often internalize that crap/, her agents people promised her all of this money most people did not give a damn about her at all. / how cruel /she was being sued by her husband / citing her suicide attempts. making that public/and Mel tome. was suing. her how can one person that that crap. I guess because I am one of those recovering people, i just feel if she had spoken to one or two recovering people/ women, may be it would have made a difference in her taking more control/ BUT tHIS WAS THE 60;S/ her talent and generosity did not deserve that type of treatment, it looks like these 2 guys at CBS tried to destroy her mentally and professionally, where was everybody else when that day happened/ she was a strong woman . how do you survive that/ can you hear that sheer sublime genius in this clip / . its like people were so jealous they tried to destroy her / Jackie Chicago/ and still listening in 2019. because she was alway be one of the GOATS/ REST IN PEACE Ms., GARLAND. wish some of these business people had treated you better/ or you could have cracked some heads!!!!!

How could cbs fire her, she had a contract? For 26 episodes, at 26 million. That is what I read. CBS wouldn't let Judy be Judy. All DUMB CBS HAD TO DO WAS MOVE HER SHOW TO A DIFFERENT TIME SLOT, THE STUPID IDIOTS.

    I played the state,
    The capital,
    And people said
    Don't stop,
    Until you play the Palace,
    you haven't played the top.
For years I had it preached to me,
    And drummed into my head,
    Until you play the Palace,
You might as well be dead.
A team of hoofers was the headline,
At the Majestic, down in Dallas.
    But they canceled the day,
    Their agent called to say,
You can open the bill at the palace.
So, it became the Hall of Fame,
    The Mecca of the trade.
When you had played the Palace,
You knew that you were made.
So, I hope you understand my wondrous thrill,
'cause Vaudevilles back as the Palace,
    And I'm on the bill.
    Shine on
    Shine on
    Harvest moon
    Up in the sky
    I aint had no lovin
    Since January
    Febuary
    June or July
    Some of these days
    Your gonna miss me honey
    Some of these days
    Your gonna feel so lonely
    You miss my hugging
    You miss my kissing
    You'll miss me honey
    When I'm far away
    Oh my man
    I love him so
    He'll never know
All my life is just despaire
    But i dont care
When he takes me in his arms
    The world is bright alright
    I dont care
    I dont care
    If people frown
    On me
    I'm happy go lucky
    They say that I'm plucky
    Contented and carefree,
    I dont care
    I dont care
If he's a clerk or just a millionare,
    If im not successful
    It wont be degressful
    'cause I dont care.
    And all around me
    I hear voices that I can't ignore.
    The voices of the stars
Who played the Palace long before.
    The stars who entertained you,
    Until the rafters rang.
    You dont need there names
For the whole world acclaims them
For the wonderful songs they sang.
    Theres Eddie Canter,
    Georgie Jessle,
    Louie Holts,
    Johnson and olson.
    Cowerson boys,
    Howerdson boys
Aand that singing fool Al Jolson.
    And so with deep humility,
I stand in front of you
I'm proud to play the palace,
It's like a dream come true,
Which is why I'd like to shout it up and down.
    Just to tell Broadway
That the two a day is back in town.

What happened to the days of women dressing really feminine, heels skirts dresses as opposed to trousers? What really happened to those days and those elegant women that showed showed off their feminine qualities as a if it were a breath of air.

There's no one who comes close to Judy Garland. Except Lana del Rey. TBH I think its "safer" for Lana to play Priscilla Presley or 1960s French Vogue model Beatrice Dautresme (her literal dead-ringer physically and stylistically). Because vocally and emotionally I find them so very similar as song-writers. Difficult relationships with mothers, an out-of-place striking beauty that doesn't necessarily match their era's standards, an inherently vulnerable kindness and openness and progressive attitude. Both passionate vocalists who sing from the heart. I see so many parallels between Lana and Judy but I think Lana is marginally healthier, more comfortable in her own skin and her curvy body, more accepted and loved at least by her siblings if not her own mother. They are both gay icons, interestingly.
