- WOW! This makes me feel like I have a front row seat at Carnegie Hall! I can't imagine that this performance of 'Come Rain Or Come Shine' is any less magnetic, ... reverberating with Judy elements, like a storm rolling across our souls, ... than the nights she sang it at Carnegie Hall. She shook the earth, rocked it on it's axis & blasted the skies with her thunder. The sound waves are still traveling through the universe! It's the same arrangement ... Mort Lindsey directing the orchestra ... & Judy exploding like a Super Nova. It is a moment to see, to imagine, to experience.
Judy has never been 'just a voice' ... & this performance really emphasizes that fact. Watch her body ... every part of her is reaching for & holding onto the energy ... not just for a single note ... but throughout the song. No wonder she felt such exhaustion afterwards, crashing back down to earth. Her STAR burned brightly, then & now.
She starts the song softly & builds to a crescendo, hands flexed, arms outstretched, sometimes grabbing herself as if to hold back when she needs to ...& then letting herself explode. All of her is so fully expressed here, the gestures we know as Judy ... in a single song ... including finger snapping, the 'hair thing'- I don't know what else to call it - & her hand gesture ... thumb & index finger together. There's even a little hop - like she wants to jump out of herself! Look at the intensity of her face at 3:04. Also, if you can ... tell me what she says at the end of the song. I can't make it out.
This is quintessential Judy ... in all her wondrous beauty.

The song was written for the musical St. Louis Woman, and was published in 1946.

Judy is the foundation that most singers are built upon but NO ONE CAN OR WILL SURPASS HER. EVER !
These shows were as "real" as it gets. My father was the arranger, composer, and conductor for these shows as well as the Carnegie Hall concert. My mother was Judy's stand in for rehearsing the orchestra. As big a star as Judy was, I still recall how down to earth she was with people. Backstage she would babysit me, and even took the time to teach me how to speak french.

Trevor thanks for sharing your experience with two tremendous talents, your father did wonders showcasing what I have always considered the greatest singer ever, you must have stories about being on the set of the brilliant "The Judy Garland Show" where much of the finest singing ever is contained within those incredible shows, love the concert episodes and what a great arrangement Mort did here, nobody ever came close to their "Come Rain Or Come Shine"!

You should have seen/heard Edith Piaf as well. An extra thrill when a voice like this comes out of someone barely five feet tall.
What I love about Judy as a singer is that she was very much aware of her vocal power, but she never overused it. She was a true artist and storyteller, never a show-off.
You're so right. She’s often referred to (sometimes by herself) as a ‘belter’ but she sang medleys with restraint and subtlety.

Carnegie was some of the greatest evenings of my life…what a party. Most of the Official Judy Garland Fan Club was there and boy did we celebrate!
There are some terrific talents out there - past & present. But Judy stands alone. This is one take, no gimmicks, in front of a live audience - on television. She breezes through a very complicated arrangement & equals the miracle she created at Carnegie Hall. Judy & her ilk are the reason I am not impressed with so many super-stars who take forever to film a video of one song & years to release a single album. We were lucky to have Judy Garland - & her like.
Just imagine if the Carnegie Hall concert was recorded full-out on videotape like this. And this arrangement of "Come Rain.." is, at the very least, ambitious: a much faster tempo, aggressive brass and bongos, etc. And Judy doesn't just rise to the occasion, she attacks. By the 3rd minute of the song she's in full bloom: using the arms, stabbing the air for emphasis on certain notes, and on the last "shiiiiine," she surprises even herself. A stunning performance.

Just look at the shear determination in her face at 3:05 She was channeling something deep, very deep to be able to finish the song as she did. I absolutely love the look of shock in her face as she says "oh my goodness" as if she were watching it, in awe, along with us. Never has there been anyone better and there never will.

She's so in command, and at home there. And her camera technique is phenomenal. Plus, she's so open to her surroundings, and so completely present, that as a viewer I get that thrilling feeling that anything could happen up there.

But you’re correct completely about her technique, of course. (And not everyone can even make a camera love them 😄). She knew how her body and gestures worked toward both camera (MGM training) and the general eye of an audience-think of how many solo singers perform big shows with BIG crowds and are able to “reach” an entire audience. In my lifetime, only Tina Turner could do it, on a stage with no “dancers” or effects. Make you feel she was sweating *just* for you.
In Garland’s day, she could play to crowds of 15,000-20,000 and leave that same huge impression on an audience regularly. It’s why people paid to see her. Strange wonder, huh?

I saw Judy in S.F.'s Civic Auditorium when she went on tour right after Carnegie Hall...and yes, she was absolute magic on stage. I'm 77 now, have seen many great performers, but Judy's concert was the most exciting thing I have ever seen. I can still remember it...total and complete magic.

This is a person, an artist, being a genius. Painful, difficult to watch, brilliant, far ahead of her time, enjoyable, inexplicable, jarring, beautiful. None of it makes sense, but all of it makes sense.
Thank God for these shows so generations can see how great she was. No performer compares to her. No one.

This was someone who was 100% on top of her game...and then for this song notched it up to 300%.....I really don't think she thought she would be this good. She nailed that last note....one of those rare occurences where you're already "that good," but your voice just catches that wave and rides to a crescendo that staggers....

NOBODY can sing like this woman ! I read that Johnny Mercer composed the lyrics to this song thinking of Judy Garland and that he was obsessed with her. This version is even better than Carnegie Hall in my opinion, particularly the last 8 bars of this song....absolutely spellbinding !

Somewhere between Naomi slaying the lipsync and the performance in Judy...what a song.
She knows this song very well, and can use the template she has worked out before to improvise upon. The major difference throughout the 60s is the diminishing of her air supply (damn those cigarettes) which she substitutes for with a controlled phrasing ideal for the intimacy of TV -- and then the "Irish witch" as she often called herself, comes to the fore and she somehow simply summons up a voice from years before---listen to the Metropolitan opera tapes, only 4 years before, but a surprisingly "young" voice, and amazingly, the tribute to Harold Arlen in 1968, a time when she was talking songs in her concerts, but for him she pulls out a voice of massive range and power.

Amazing to watch the mechanics of how she produces every note and word. Not one note is just stand up and sing because you've got a great, god-giver voice. Most stunning and entertaining version of this song! I've spent the last 30 min or so looking at/ listening to the other artists on UA-cam. While they're still great, this tiny little lady with a voice out of this world, once again went over and beyond. The ending.....100% FABULOUS! ! ! ! ! ** really really hope the Carnegie Doc. makes it to theaters next year**

I'm so happy I grew up when I did , we still had access to appreciate the tail end of work from legends of Hollywood with actual talent, and even as a child of the 70's, the greats like Judy, Sammy, Frank, Rosemary, and countless others were embedded in our pop culture consciousness. I miss those days, sigh.
