    I feel these are great little add ons for a club or gaming group that plays regularly, keeps games fresh and slightly less predictable

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  27 днів тому +1

      Maybe, especially if everyone seems to play the same team each week and on the same terrain. I can see that.

    There's probably an element of them taking inspiration from the Warcry twist cards and trying to tap into that fun 'anything goes' playstyle where you don't take the game as seriously because you've got to make the best of what you get. As others have mentioned, it also adds something different for players who are using the same teams.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      Agree, I think that "Twist Deck" type mechanic is something we are seeing more and more of from GW.

    I do play Kill Team semi-competitively, but I *also* play the dafter and more chaotic narrative missions (not always with the same people). It's fun to have some extra ideas for adding flavour, but it's also not a massive value-add. 🙂

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      Not massive at all, just a couple of pages. I think it's a decent enough idea for what it is, although like I said I am a little unconvinced by the actual rules effects on the cards .

  • @Raptor0256
    @Raptor0256 27 днів тому +2

    if they wanted to disrupt competitive play they would add jump tests back to bheta decima. but i like the fun of adding a couple of these to our games. enjoyed the jungle ones
    i had the idea of doing ww1 style trench warfare map. with artillary shelling using the old scatter dice and explosion templates, to try and keep people moving around the board

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      That would be pretty cool, although it would require a terrain set, and I suspect the competitive minded folks would not be into it, just like they are not into Bheta Decima.

    Obviously this is for narrative play where winning is less important than having an experience. I’m not sure these particular cards are up my street but I like the idea of adding flavour to games and in particular the odd campaign game. It’s to make things a bit more cinematic and add drama. Yes it sometimes unbalances the game but like I said it’s more about an experience than strict winning and losing.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      I agree that the game is usually more about the experience, this is why I am quite happy to continue to play Kill Team, despite not being very good at it! However I'm not actually sure these cards succeed in adding to the experience.

    6:00 do you think that they don't realise that competative minded players simply ignore this sort of thing and play the 'real' game?

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  27 днів тому +1

      I have no idea what they realize. I remember when sentries was launched it went out of it's way to claim in the text that it was a new mode of play for Matched Play...

    I love this kind of thing. It's exactly why I play Warcry. With that being said, this is exactly why I play Warcry, not why I play Kill Team. I play Kill Team when I want to compete, and Warcry when I want "beer and pretzels".
    To me Kill Team is Chess to Warcry's Checkers. They both scratch different gaming itches for me.
    With that being said I still think they are neat, and I can totally see how someone who cares less about tactics and strategy might want to chuck these in the mix from time to time. I still bust out a narrative mission on occasion but, again, if I want to play a game that feels less "serious" I'd rather just go with a game that is designed from the ground up to be less serious.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      This is a great point. I do think the homogenization of games is a problem, games should be different from each other, not just all contain the same mechanics. Because if they do, what's the point in playing different games.

  • @jonrollason5709
    @jonrollason5709 27 днів тому +3

    I do wish the competition scene was more willing to accept randomness and unpredictability in-game though. The whining about jump tests in Bheta Decima until the mechanic was nuked (and several teams indirectly nerfed as a result) was really telling. Competition players don't want to lose because of randomness. They want to win because they're better trained and more knowledgeable than their opponent. 🙂

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому

      It's a really interesting thing. At the end of the day we are all playing a dice game that has randomness at its core. A great player can still look a game to bad dice. But Jump Tests where a bridge too far apparently.

    You should try Spec op narrative campaign. It is the best way tp play imho. It has a sense of progression between games and a goal instead of just one and done. Can be competitive in narritive. If you keep losing you will get injuries you dont want but can be fun.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому +1

      Spec Ops is interesting and I might try it out. At the moment I am actually struggling a bit to get regular games in though.

    • @robertchmielecki2580
      @robertchmielecki2580 23 дні тому +2

      My KT group tried playing Spec Ops, but it was such a dull, mechanical experience. Zero extra excitement wasn't worth additional bookkeeping and imbalance.
      GW "campaign systems" are hardly playtested at all, I believe. There are tons of options to gain, loads of tables full of bonuses. Playtesting them all in all plausible scenarios and combinations would take ages even for a large team.
      I think it's just one guy who gets 2 or 3 weeks to write everything down, because other important deadlines (production of physical product related) need to be met, so he works overtime producing whatever strikes his fancy, just to meet the word quota. Honestly, I believe it's better to make up your own campaign.

    • @Ulfhednir9
      @Ulfhednir9 22 дні тому

      @@robertchmielecki2580 that is not the experience we had at my local hobby store. 16 players all had a good time. Didnt take long at all. Basically we had created an exp tracker (that took me about 20mins to make) and give out to the players to keep track of what the operatives did in each game. Afterwards we would take our time to add the exp and choose the upgrades or injuries and if they wanted too write a narrative story about the battle. we all had a great time and when the campaign finished we all wanted to start a new one.
      Sorry your group didnt have the same fun as ours did.

    I guess if you’re playing fairly often, using the same teams, and maybe only have one of the terrain sets and books, then this would be a way to add some variation to the games.

  • @CrimsonTemplar2

    In days gone by, these sorts of rules would’ve been published in The Citadel Journal.
    I have to agree that these would fail as a balancing mechanic for games with varying skill levels & no regard for who is playing what team. Rather than randomizing I think you’d need to purposefully select the debuff for the more skilled player.
    Overall, this feels like filler content to keep the KT player-base under the impression that their game is still being actively supported before they officially announce the new edition.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  27 днів тому +3

      I remember the Citadel Journal. I agree. I do think a little "Hey we still care about KT" article in White Dwarf is worth it from the perspective of creating the impression the game is still actively supported, it's all good stuff from that point of view.

      Yeah, I need to get my physical health sorted out. At the moment I am trying to diet because people say you can't exercise your way out of bad diet. Like I appreciate you taking the time to try and bully me into improving myself. I get it, but honestly wouldent know where to start. Plus, I have a disability, which obviously isn't aided by being stupidly overweight but I worry about hurting myself with some exercises since I have surgical pins and other nonsense in one my ankles. But hopefully one day, God willing, I will get in shape for the sake of my daughter, so thanks again for the virtual kick up the backside.

    • @TabletopImpulse
      @TabletopImpulse  26 днів тому +1

      Well... perhaps, like I said I don't think the rules are particularly evocative of the things they are trying to evoke. I think they probably spent more time writing up the background text for the cards then the rules text.
