Box corners. Brilliant
You didn’t count raccoon time.
Raccoon Time is free. Raccoons just give it to you, at random, when you least expect it.
I 100% honestly had a raccoon visitor while i watched this in my garage😂😂😂
😂
Honestly miss the easy deploy down and dirty terrain of the 90s 2000s that isn't trying to mimic 40k terrain but is more abstract
When a pile of rocks was perfectly satisfactory
I liked the sort of more general sci fi aesthetic things had back then too. Of course you had your gothic elements, but a lot of it wouldn't have looked out of place in Star Wars or 2000AD.
That friggin raccoon sidequest was ridiculous and I loved it!
One of the few channels I consistently watch regardless of topic. Eric your passion and love for the hobby always comes across so genuine and always inspires me on my own projects
Agreed, Eric captures the regular guy crafting vibe, but with succinct editing and quality tips!
A quick technique to cover the cardboard ends is to put on an old pair of gloves and spread hot glue across the surface prior to painting. Fast and super effective. Thank you Eric for all your inspiration.
With optional extra grout for texture, and bits like bent metal wire etc.
What are your thoughts on something like spackle for that?
@@JeffBilkins You can stick a drinking straw and paint it metalic also, so it looks like exposed water pipes.
@@skilledwarman I think spackle could be too wet. Cheap caulk could work. It would take longer to dry than hot glue.
@@trikepilot101 Oh im using hot glue for the structural bits like you showed for sure. Im just thinking of using spackle along the edges to try and make it look a bit less like cardboard. Maybe throw some paperclips in to look like rebar. Figured spackle, the rebar clips, and a flocking of a sand mix i use for bases before the painting step could look good without adding too much time to the build
Solid set of starter terrain for sure. It might be interesting to see another video upgrading them. Another hour to fill those open cardboard edges, add some greebles, give the paint job a bit of a boost etc
Posters, rust on the pipes , there's a lot that can be done from this basic state. They are a great base to progress from
To take each building up a level, fill the hollows in the corrugated cardboard with putty/wood filler/plaster/hot glue and then stick in bent bits of paper clips to look like torn rebar.
Is this your first time here?
i was thinking about something like that myself. Good idea!
The best thing about a project like this isn't just that it's quick, but that you can continuously improve the end result.
You can set aside 60-90 mins to build a few buildings and call it good, then at a later time you can spent maybe half an hour to add details like windowsills and exterior trim, later you could add rubble, broken furniture and signage. over the course of weeks, months or even years you could go from a simple ruin like this to some genuinely impressive terrain, but at each step you still have perfectly usable terrain.
Absolutely one of my eventual goals is to have enough terrain for a home board and that was the path I was heading down before I had to move. You start with something very basic but it ends up being beautiful
While I wouldn't limit yourself to one hour...I have done something similar to this many moons ago. Shortly after college we decided to randomly play Mordheim - and no one had any of the terrain on hand. I cut and built a crazy 3'x3' Mordheim table out of cardboard, hot glue and popsicle sticks...dusted everything in 4-5 different grey/brown spray paints and we played a small campaign over the next few days. In the end it went straight into the trash. Not ideal, but it gave use the vertical/crazy/twisted Mordheim vibe we were looking for.
For texture on simple buildings you can also try that chunky "rock finish" spray paint that some hobby shops carry. Easy, even if the cans gum up really quick.
Sounds like a good time! Sometimes you gotta make something quick to avoid playing on planet bowling ball
My country doesn't have raccoons, can I still do this project?
I was waiting for the spider jump scare lol Great back to basics vid Eric.
Love the idea of just cutting the corner of a box and not having to measure or glue. Amazing job!
Fast, simple, effective. That’s right up our alley! Great work Eric.
Two minutes in my guy has a whole building set and ready to go, this is what genius looks like people!

man i love when people try to make wargaming more accessible. Its a fun challenge to try and get an army together with just old toys and simple crafting. The real challenge is to be a wargamer and not let it take over your life lol.
Hey Eric, as a jumpy person i appreciate that you didn't put in a Jumpscare and thanks for being honest about it :)
Man the grout did so much, even on my fancy stuff i might start doing that
one of the best makers on youtube. Great intro into scratch building.
This is fantastic for the time put in! Such a good start to a game board in a ridiculously fast time.
Tile grout smearing worked so well I thought
Would you consider a part 2 of this video? "Upgrading a full table of 40k terrain in X hours"
I'm thinking out loud here:
1.) Some way of covering up the corrugated cardboard edges, I see another commenter has mentioned hot glue, but also I guess there is spackle or maybe modelling compound or some kind of plaster?
2.) Window frames and some tiled floors to break up plain surfaces using chipboard
3.) Rebar and other construction things sticking out of the upper floor edges
4.) Scratch built details using various bits such as power boxes
5.) A little more rubble on the floor, similar to your excellent ruined skyscraper build where it was pink foam and that cracked effect of the bent foamcore board I think it was
I haven't tried it myself, but would baking soda/powder (not sure which is better) would be a better substitute then the tile grout and less hazardous. Love the vid for first time terrain builders.
Thanks for not jump scaring me, brother
Instantly subscribed. I have a lot of leftover cardoard boxes, limited budget for terrain and little time to paint. You've just showed me the solution to all my problems :D
Paper straws, terrible for drinks, and unhealthy for you, but EXCELLENT for crafting pipes!
using the existing corner of the box to make the building, that is clever , a real 'DOH!' moment :) Thank you Sir.
Made 4 buildings like this and am glad I’m seeing the same method being used by a respected builder!
If a raccoon crawls through all your ruined city terrain, would that make it Racoon City?
One of my favorite cheap and easy terrains is taking old sprues and twisting them up a bit to resemble tank traps.
The raccoon interlude made me completely forget that i was watching a hobby video lmao. The terrain looked fantastic by the end as well
Love this. They look great on their own but there is so much potential for more details. Makes me wanna build these and add on some of my old gw terrain. Awesome stuff as always, dude c:
You havent given us the best game table...youve given us the good enough game table. Thats what matters. Something to play on now versus 6 months from now. And cheap. just wish I had as much luck in using a hot glue gun as you. Mine is more like a hot "sticky" gun.
Dollar Tree used to sell miniature milk crates (about 6" or so). They made great building frames to cut up. Sadly they dont sell them anymore.
This guy gets in! Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good!
I see some of those newer Cadians mixed with your Blood Angels and it all looks badass!
I literally vocalize every time I see EHW post! Love your work bro!
Odd
This is great and I would love to see some follow up vids where you go back and upgrade the terrain, adding on more detail etc. My local gaming group are really hyped to have a mass build-a-thon using these ideas in a couple of weeks time.
Great video. Nothing like some down and dirty terrain building. That tile grout really added to the buildings.
Everybody talk about the jumpscare but what about the racoon dude? Great job on this building!
This is a great tutorial for people just getting into this hobby.
Amazing work in such a short time ! You could also add how to improve it later, like adding poster ?
I've said this before, using Caslon Antique font is pro tier stuff, I love it. keep doing great work man!
Great video! Good starting point to get something on the table, from there anyone can add embellishments, or I was thinking fillin the edges to hide the fact it's cardboard. I appreciate the lack of jump scares as I'm in the office "working" at the moment.
I am tired of playing on unpainted plastic terrain at my LGS, so I want to bring my own, but I don't have time to paint terrain instead of models! I have a problem with overthinking details, so making some cardboard ruins and chemical vats would be great. Thanks for the tips.
I really like this, I really want some terrain but all my money goes towards models. This will be great.
Also, I love the new shirt art
I did not expect analog horror in my fast and cheap terrain video
Yeah, loved this video. Don't be afraid to push yourself and try to make the most money you can out of youtube. You obviously love the hobby and crafting and you always seem so grounded and... well, just normal. I think viewers will really relate to you and will keep supporting you. You deserve to make money out of this! Your content is AMAZING!
Keep up the good work dude.
Thank you, I appreciate this message a lot. Really nice to feel like others want you to succeed
@@EricsHobbyWorkshop No problem dude, take care and best wishes for you and the family 🙂
Thank you for reminding me why I love this hobby so much. I am promising myself to watch your videos more again to paint more often.
The other interesting thing about this is that the "back to basics" terrain makes sure that the miniatures really stand out.
The results have no business being as good as they are for just an hour of work. Great job!
Huzzah,, you are the Gold Standard.
The details provides when covering priming the cardboard was really useful. I didn't realise how much primer you'd have to use to stop the cardboard from warping.
Solid beginner terrain and super accessible, great vid Eric :)
This speaks to my soul and ye olden days when we just smashed together whatever vague approximation of terrain we could using stuff out of the recycling bin and some dollar store paint and glue. Simpler times.
I made 6 ruins tonight, I added a step and painted them in Durhams Water putty for some texture. they look great and im going to use them for my next game, great video, thank you!
Hell yeah dude, glad to hear it. Enjoy your game!
Spend 12 minutes watching this video. Now I only have 48 to build the terrain. Dammit Eric i'm not made of time!
You just spent an extra 35s on this comment! Get going! 😂
Great video. I’ll definitely be making my own ruins out of cardboard to upgrade my home table 👍
This is a great craft for wargaming. Thanks for the ideas.
Agreed that once you start seeing crafting stuff, you can’t unsee it.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure
This is one of my favorite channels hands down.
Hands down the number one best terrain videos on the tube and they always get my mind racing with new ideas!
Leave a radio running in your garage, that will help keep out raccoons, skunks and other varmints. I have had one running 24/7 for years and no longer have little critters running around.
Damn thats a great tip
Did not expect spooky RacoonHammer today
I love these kind of quick and dirty solutions so we can focus on what´s important while keeping immersion.
Brings me back to playing 40k as a kid and playing on pool or ping pong tables with cardboard terrain
I have almost a full board of “spruruins” where I use old plastic sprues plastic glued together and then super glued on top of cardboard for the base, but this looks so much better! Definitely will give it a try!
The tile grout hack was amazing!
We need an update on your Sons of Horus.
Definitely know some folks that this would be perfect for!
Perfect starting project!
Im french and your vidéo is really cool, I need that on my table.
Great stuff. Those ruins look like they came straight out of the 3rd ed rulebook
Great video and definitely something I might emulate for my next year leading a school war gaming club. I would have loved a jump scare too. So used to Nuke top ten.
3:51 and a sharp blade reduces the risk of injuries because you need to use less force and therefore have more control :) great vid!
Thank you for not doing a jump scare!
I figured the racoon was going to be the set-up for a Skaven puppet or something to be honest!
You sure it's not Uncle Adam from Snarling Badger sneeking into your place.
"At this moment, something unsettling happened."
Yeah, I was hit with a midroll ad
Perfect hobby video 🫶🤘
Thanks for not doing the jumpscare, I was holding my breath lol
"Like an angry prison guard delousing prisoners". Great analogy...lol. I seriously love these videos, Eric. They're one of the only ones my wife actually watches with me! Haha
Wish this video existed when I was starting out!
Call the racoon a Heretic and attack it with your power sword. Scream "For the Emperor" loudly! Use raccoon fur as crafting material.
This is a great video and I love making scenery, my only complaint is that I run the local municipal kids playground and wondered where our sand keeps disappearing to, now I know!
It's fine for now, but, when you're done with the scenery if you could return the sand it would be much appreciated, thanks.
I really love your content , thanks to videos like this I’ve started working my way through the original how to make wargames terrain book , and you’re 100% right suddenly everyday items have suddenly become some part that I can add to a war zone. Keep up the great videos !
Raccoon to himself after you told him how to get to the attic, "write that down, write that down!"
Man after that little segment in the editing room I sat anxious if you would trick me and jumpscare me anyway 😂
Normal hobby UA-camr: 24 hour challenge!
EHW: Hold my beer, eh
I love this channel. Seriously every video is so good and really inspires me to embrace every aspect of the hobby. Thanks Eric
Best Hobby video ever! loved the racoon invasion!!!
also thanks for not putting the jump scare in! I'm super tense right now and watch your stuff to chill out!
hell yeah, the grout worked so well!
Oh man I miss Wegmans. Great video!
Love when new videos come out, always excited to watch and support. Favorites are the build videos.
Wish the shirts won't so expensive.
The price is a result of the fact i am using very high quality cotton shirts and fancy printing and the price of everything has gone up unfortunately. I wish i could do em cheaper too but the numbers just don’t work for the quality i want
I nowadays build more elaborate terrain but really do see the point of this. This is how I started out back in the day. 🎉
Great video, gonna see if some friends want to sit down and do this this summer.
This is perfect
Nice work! Now how about using some of that terrain building knowledge and seal your attic off from the Xenos trash Pandas? 😄
the manager at a restaurant close to a game store: where the hell have all our straws gone!?
Thank you Editing Eric for not including that thing, I was holding glas while watching that scene ❤
I appreciate not being jumpscared 😅
Love the terrain and all your work
Me: I want to get a warhammer terrain together to play, but THE TIME!
ERIK: 1 hour! Cardboard! BAM!
Now do a summer-long terrain project! Big time, baby!
We love you Eric!!!!!!!!!!!
The music at the beginning of the video I think is used in dimension 20 aswell
