  • In this episode of "My Favorite Riff" Nikki welcomes Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne). Zakk plays his signature bulls-eye design as he and Nikki talk about making musical soup, and playing for the boss; Ozzy Osbourne. His advice when it comes to music; don't worry about what other people are doing, do what you like.

Still play in cover bands to “scratch the itch” but music runs in my blood and that’s what I think about when I wake up and before I pass out. I agree with Zakk! There is always a movement going on. Just do the music you wanna do! I play a lot of blues rock stuff, but I noticed I am mixing stuff in like finger tapping, pick squeals, legato stuff,a little bit of neo-classical,the 80's shred stuff. But that's what I spent a lot of time listening to early on. Then got into blues, and fusion later.

Dokken and Ratt were my favorites through the 80's on the Glam Side Crue started and stopped with Shout for me perfect Metal record . But I was also a big fan of Metallica up till Justice and also liked a lot of Anthrax and Slayer and when I play I sound like the Heavier bands I mentioned . But wanted to be George Lynch my Guru and the 10 fret stretch Warren DeMartini but I gravitated back to the speed Metal with Power chords and screaming solo's Priest , Scorpions showed me how great bands sound live and what a great concert sounds like didnt miss either band on Tour from 83 to 92 !! Zakk is a Beast but he loves his Blues Metal side and he's made some great Riffs and solos with OZZY ......

That's what's great about being a guitar player. The "soup" they were talking about. Who you are and what you love will flow out of it, just dont THINK about it, lol. At least that's how I feel. I'm early Ozzy, Maiden, The Melvins, The Ramones, Hank William's and Slayer. We'll see what comes out. The important thing is that we like it. I enjoyed your post, great topic= influence and conscious versus unconcious projection.
