- I just recently found out that Fujifilm is back making their film for their Japanese market, which is huge news for Asian markets. From my understanding, Fujifilm had a different manufacturer produce their film internationally cough kodak *ahem*, but now all their film has "Made in Japan" printed on the box. This is great news for film as a whole, as my thought was this was Fuji slowly dipping itself out of the market to pursue digital photography entirely, but it seems they may still care about film after all.

We've been talking to some vendors in Japan and it seems to be the case. Limited quantities, but it's being made. We just got some Fuji 100 35mm at our lab but it was pricey due to the import. Hoping things improve soon and getting Superia back would be amazing!
You're one of the few, if not the only, youtuber mentioning the differences between buying film in the USA and in some other countries. In Brazil, buying Portra 400 or Ektar 100 is pretty much unaffordable - not to mentiton Cinestill. A single roll of one of those film stocks might cost almost 20% of the minimum wage. Most of the time we end up buying Kodak Vision 3 or other cheap options.

I pay normally around R$50 (Brazilian Real) for a roll of 30 exp Kodak Vision 3, plus R$30 for developing and scanning.
Keep in mind minimum wage here is around R$1400
Fuji film stocks being available in Japan, especially in small quantities, does not mean that they are producing film again. They could just be selling frozen master rolls, coated several years ago.
Why would they lie about it? They even gave the reason why they stopped producing for a year. And I think some internationally sold stocks where produced in the US in the meantime so when they come back people don't hoard all the film they can get, and cause a stocking problem everywhere before they can get to their normal pace.
@@Fran-sr1sb cause they know that especially their Japanese costumers would be very upset if they just said that they would stop the production of film cause it’s not as profitable as selling digital cameras, Instax film and chemicals for cosmetics and the pharmacy industry
@@filipecostapt6427 yeah thats true, but what are the costumers going to do? Not buy a couple of cameras is not going to affect their profits that much. And if tou want to have the film camera experience in a digital one there arent too many options. Yes their reputation is going to be affected, but not that much, most digital photographers dont care (and dont even know) that fuji still produces film. Remember that film isnt used in the professional space as often as digital cameras, its more of a side grade if its used at all.
Remember, lies have short legs, if they are running on frozen stock they can't be going for ever, it CAN be a stopgap while they figure out how to keep producing film. But it's better to just tell the reality than straight up lie. Yes people will be angry, but I'd think more will be sad than angry if they tell the truth.

If anyone goes to Japan, I recommend Champ Camera (about 40 minutes southwest of Shinjuku by train) or Fujiya Camera (about 10 minutes north of Shinjuku by train). Both stores carry Fujifilm (although they also sell out quickly) and their prices are generally a bit lower than the major retailers like Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera.

This is great news! I saved about 30-40 rolls of the 100 speed since I have gotten great results with it.
Hopefully they are back to a decent production by summer time
They have probably looked at Kodak selling TriX at £12.00 a roll or Portra 400 @ £18.00 a roll here in the UK, and miraculously found new supplies of unobtainable chemicals. Chemicals that they themselves manufacture from scratch. Just in case if anyone didnt know Fuji was a chemical manufacturer before becoming a digital camera mKer. Its a game of me too. Corporate greed to be exact.

ive heard many things about fuji, one includes the fact that theyre making film again, but ive also heard that all their current production is just them releasing tiny tiny batches of frozen leftover stock, and once this is all sold theres going to be no more. it can be seen in fuji outsourcing production to kodak in america. although im not entirely sure due to fuji's lack of transparency, i truly hope theyre seeing the value left in their truly wonderful film stocks. im young, so i havent had the chance to shoot many of fuji's film stocks. its rlly a pity since the frozen expired goodness costs an arm and a leg nowadays...
i honestly loved superia over most other cheaper stocks so i really hope them restarting production is true
Well a few months ago they did specify restarting domestic production once they were able to properly source the materials needed, with the trade-off being a price increase, which has been seen so far in the new batches of slide film coming out as their price has gone up.
The rumor about Fuji's film stock all being previously produced, frozen stock, has been a persistent one for quite a while. I'm skeptical, as with how long that's been floating about, I'd have expected them to have well and truly run out by now. Don't think there has ever been substantial proof for it, either. Hopefully that gut feeling is accurate!
@@Dan-TechAndMusic the substantial proof is people very well connected to the Japanese film industry literally saying that its freezer film. Fuji produced more than enough.
Fuji didn't outsource production to the US. They shipped master rolls to Kodak for cutting and distribution.
It makes sense film made there would be cheaper than film imported like kodak . So why surprised? And is this superia going to be available in the states?

I’ll be going to Japan in two weeks so I’ll probably see first hand what’s going on with local produced film since I plan to purchase some stock if its cheaper or hard to get in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 (where I’m from) which is basically anywhere US Market.

My take from my trip to Japan last month is that t's a luxury to shoot film in Japan. One per person limits and prices even exchanged to USD was still expensive. Those dreary and expensive days in 2021/22 for film in the US are gone. We don't truly know how good we have it sometimes I tell ya..
I do know Fuji Tilburg (Netherlands) used to make Fuji film for the Europe district. But they dropped the film production here. However the color photopaper is still made here.
My guess is, they went to a smaller facility and while demand was still there. They licensed Kodak to produce film for them.
But that’s just my wild guess. 🤷🏻
Film made in the Netherlands is more than a decade ago, so that has nothing to do with the current shortage

That’s great news only right now if you want to buy some here in the US it’s going to be pricey!!! eBay has some going for $30-$37 a roll 36 exposures which is insane so I’ll stick with portra for now and their other Kodak products. I’ll only use my Fuji Pro 400H on special locations.

They need to come back to the US at some point because I'd really like some decent film with cooler colors to shoot.
If it means anything I work at Walmart, and the FUJI 400 UPC information has changed back to saying SUPERIA XTRA in it this happened a few days ago cause I track it and buy it a few times a month. All our stock right now says FUJI 400 on the green top part of the box and I'm eagerly waiting for the 4 in transit with an ETA of next week to see if they're made in Japan even if its frozen packs

I've lived in Japan for the last 30 years and can say that Fuji has not started to manufacture film here. Fujifilm has expanded its ability to manufacture INSTAX film due to a high demand both domestically and in the international markets. The Fuji 35, 120, and other formats that are available now represent the last of their refrigerated stock. I was in Tokyo recently and stopped by Yodobashi Camera in Shinjuku as well as a few other places known to have a good selection of film. Fuji was scarce if even available. My local camera stores have confirmed they are no longer able to order Fuji films other than INSTAX or ACROS II (manufactured and imported from the UK), and all are switching to Kodak and other brands. The reason for limits of 1 roll is simply to stretch out the inevitable end. Two of my local Kitamura Camera outlets have switched to Kodak 35mm films exclusively. If Fujifilm were to reintroduce film production in Japan they would announce it on their corporate website in the same way as they announced the "temporary suspension".

JCH has said himself multiple that this is not the case, unless he specifies otherwise I’d say he’s the best authority we have on that. As of his last stream, no it’s not new film it’s freezer film and considering the expiration date like I commented on Yvonne’s video this is more bad news than it is good, because this very well may be the last round of fresh Fuji 400 barring Fuji ACTUALLY producing again.

@@Uwe_Ludolf I think continuously harping on the guy for that really has no use, the reality is he is one of a handful of the best sources for Japan to West communication on what exactly is going on.
Honstely it’s very unlikely that they’re selling frozen stock, at least frozen Superia 400. People have been saying this for years but Superia 400 is a very sensitive film. It’s basically only beaten in sensitivity by Portra 800 and maybe Vision3 500T, so there is no way they’ve been selling frozen film as long as everyone claims because gamma radiation would have fogged it. This stuff is a low light beats and there is no way to shield it from getting fogged after expiration.
I really hope they will bring back the disposables

Photography as a whole is now a tiny part of Fuji's overall business - they make most of their revenue and profits nowadays in medical and biotech fields.
Given how even their successful digital cameras are a "side business", its surprising that they are continuing to support film given how its becoming pretty incidental to their business.
Fujifilm Instax is the best selling product in photography. As in, turnover on Instax cameras and film is (much) higher than all other cameras combined, so that also include the €6000 Canon cameras with €15000 lenses.
@@Uwe_Ludolf How are you calculating that? Are you treating all instax cameras and film as one product category but breaking down the sale of each digital camera to individual models?
It seems pretty implausible to me given the overall market value Fuji has.
Digital cameras are a $24bn a year market... Canon alone has 46% of that, which pretty much equals $11bn, Sony has $6bn (not including what they are making by selling the other companies sensors) and Nikon has $2.6bn.
Fuji's total revenue from consumer imaging (i.e. all of their consumer photography business, digital and physical film all included) is under $1bn USD. In the same year, Fuji had $20bn in revenue, photography only accounts for 5% of the company's business.

I didn't do the math myself but Henning Serger, he really has a lot of market knowledge, know how and insight info. He posts on Photrio and writes for a German magazine about analogue photography

Fuji (including all of their cameras) are in a distant 4th place in terms of camera market share.
They have half the share of Nikon, less than 1/5th the share of Sony and just over a 1/10th the share of Canon.
Other than the number of devices, its hard to see how else they could be the market leader.
superia premium isn't new branded
Dream on. You couldn't buy enough film to make them stay in the business. Film is expensive to buy, expensive to process (correctly - you can't do it well at home) is hugely polluting and wasteful.
Fuji shut down the S. Carolina plant, so nothing is made in the US anymore, but they'll only do it if they can PAY for it. I worked for Fuji for 20 years. They have a strategy to get out and it's being implemented.

I think it's complete BS that fuji is making film in JP. And that is how you get a downvote for parroting someone else's speculative opinion instead of DYOR.

I don't know there's a market for Fuji film stocks if its priced in the US like Kodak is in Japan (though the exchange rate might take some of the pain out). I love Fujifilm, but I don't think I could justify 15-20 bucks a roll for Fuji 200/400
