I shot a few rolls of this back in 2016 when it didn’t cost 8 million dollars, and I loved the results I got. Shot a roll at a concert in a dimly lit venue and got great images back. It was decently grainy, but definitely less grainy than the results you got. I think a lot of that grain is due to the expiration.
2016, what a great time
I hate how good it looks…
why lol
@@jacobchappell2197 Because I now feel the need to buy some.
I found 25 rolls about 5 years ago in a small camera shop in Japan. Paid ¥1100 yen per roll and bought all their stock. Haven’t seen it since.
As for a use case, I can only think of one; I'm thinking it would be super useful for wildlife photographers. Super long lenses usually aren't the fastest, but you still want a high shutter speed to capture the animals sharply. It's daylight balanced too
Bird photography, always need fast shutter speed.
@@JuarezLT of course because we use telephoto only
I guess the name "Natura" might be a bit of a clue?
Love the shots, I have a few rolls of Superia 800 & 1600, Venus and Natura 1600 in my fridge from the date of purchase. Looking to shoot this soon.
@@davidmantripp5312 Oh i didn't even consider that 🤣 Makes sense
I got 3 rolls of this in Osaka back in 2017, shot one roll in my mju ii, and the other two are in my freezer waiting for me to give to my grandchildren on my death bed so they can buy their first house. I’ve also still got one of those Simple Ace disposables too
The Natura S Point n shoot is also really cool cause when it's shooting Natura or any other 1600 iso dx code it shoots in a special "night" mode where it turns off flash, sets exposure compensation to +2, and shoots everything at it's maximum F1.9 aperture to take better night photos
i guess (also due to the name) that natura 1600 was probably marketed at your average wannabe NatGeo photographer shooting animals, etc. at long focal lengths. And since dusk and dawn are the most promising times to observe wildlife, the high ISO in combination with the daylight balance does make sense.
okay 1) you’re compositions from this roll are excellent 2) I’m constantly impressed/jealous of you’re filmmaking/editing prowess, and, 3) Monica’s hair color is 🔥
Double fun fact for future editing Jason, the f1.9 would only be unlocked on the Natura camera when loaded with Natura1600… any other film you would be limited to f2.8 max aperture.
Probably one of the dumbest features I’ve ever heard
Wow, gotta grind xp for the good stuff lol
@@patrickrostker6693 DX code witchcraft
The muted pastel colors look so good. Your shot you highlighted at the end framing people sitting in the train and where you have the guy leaning against the wall under the lights were my favorites. Loved the vid!
This stuff looks great, it is such a shame its practically not available. I love the architecture shots, really cool comps. Pretty fair point about its limited practicality, imagine what one of those disposables must go for now, yeesh.
Yeah it was discontinued years ago. I loved it. Shot it all the time in the city/at night without flash.
love the framing of 6:04
I never shot this but I at least wished fuji superia 800 came back
I need some 800 in my life that isn't cinestill
As someone who is originally from DC, goddamn those opening shots made me homesick. And I know exactly where they’re taken too!
Some killer shots here. I lived near DC for a few years (used the New Carrollton metro stop) and I'm not sure why I didn't shoot more architecture there.
its a tragedy this film is discontinued because i think some of these photos have looked the most hopperesque in terms of the sort of flat pastels and even lighting you managed to capture, this would easily have been one of my favorite films had i been shooting film when this stock was around
Does anyone else cheer audibly when Jason takes an absolute banger
I used to shoot sports for a living and this kind of film would be good for shooting dusk/night time games.
dang. I was really hoping to see a shot of the image at 8:00 with the train car doors open. I love the composition and how the lights in the open doorways highlight the texture of the tiles on the floor. Also good color contrast with the orange text on the sign and warm tiles to the cool lights being immitted from the train. I really wonder how it would look with this film stock
Edit: ah. I see. 8:42. woof
I use to shoot Superia a lot before they discontinued it.
You know there is to types of Fuji superia 400: x-tra and premium. I think the high speed version of x-tra is Fuji Natura and the high speed version of premium was Fuji Venus 800. Natura had the muted color with the browns and the greens in the shadows and Venus had the vivid color with deep blues like the Premium.
Also I think Fuji really stoped production before the end of the expiration date. I think like recently Fuji use to have the film in freezer for years after the finish production and still selling the film. When I was using it back in the day I notice a quality shift at the en of the production in 2019. Compared to the negs I had from previous years.
I miss these high iso Fuji films so much it hurts
I still have a dozen rolls left of this stuff from 2017-18. From my time using it, my best results were always during the day. The strength of the grain is too distracting for low light shots. You always feel that you've metered incorrectly but that's just Natura grain. I would also say that it has my favourite blues of any film stock I've used. I preferred the Venus 800 film stock in low light conditions. Not the same colours but didn't have the overbearing grain. Unfortunately that was discontinued around the same time as Natura.
This film stock was a favorite with a lot of nature photographers, I was just wondering if I could get some the other day.
I love your videos cause they're in 4:3, so I can watch them on my tube tv in true analog fashion.
12:38 is the most Hopper like pic I've seen. Love it!
A grainydays video blessing me in the middle of the workday!
For when you shoot some interior photos lit by cheap fluorescent tubes, you should get a cheap FL-D or FL-W filter. They don't cut any light but will add a bit of magenta to make things easier to correct.
Maybe I can help on the daylight balance. When that film came out “high key” photos were really popular in Japan. Any magazine, any music video, etc had this over bright, strong bright blue / green tones. I think instax models from that time also had a “high key” mode.
So the Natura and the camera they made with it, kind off fit this desire to make high key photos. All the marketing shots definitely matched the look
I got the film back then once, it was super expensive already (I think paid about ¥2000 or $20, when an Across super presto went for like ¥700 or $7).
So in summary, always niche, always expensive
This would find use in 120 as mentioned. With the 100mm lens in my grandfather's old folding camera, and the slow lens, any way you can get faster shutter times is good. So many places I'd shoot more if I didn't need a tripod because I was having to shoot slower than 1/100th. I don't see why they didn't try to market that angle with 120s.
I recently shot a roll of Fujifilm 400 at 800 and plan to have it pushed as such. If it comes out half decent I might even try having a roll shot at and then pushed to 1000 or 1600. I heard it makes the shadows really off color but tbh I can't wait to see how messed up the colors get!
Really great compositions mate, you slayed with that 35mm summicron
Nice roll man, aside from those gorgeous pastels your comps are so tight and balanced. You've gotten really good
I always wait for the parallax image at the end. It never disappoints!
I really love the image of the girl sitting on the chair/couch (6:26). The red accents throughout are brilliant. The fact that the subject is sitting right in front of amazing art and yet still chooses to stare into her phone makes this photo sad and funny. Bravo!!
Probably the best roll I've ever seen from you, Great stuff.
Seconded
The train shots were a movie I want to see. Everything starting at the station to the interiors. Great.I was kindof bored of the film in the earlier shots but that made me want it. Seemed more special. Also, two days ago I foound a box of Crayola “Colours of the World,” in the bargain carriage at my local grocery store for half price and bought them.
Great compositions and video once again.
Jason , you popped off with that roll !
Your work always hypes me up to go street shooting
Same. Weirdly always at like 3am, so I have to sit sad in the dark...
These shots are giving Edward Hopper. Especially the shot of the train at the end of the video.
Im in Tokyo right now and this film makes sense for the current weather, Its often cloudy, tall building with long shadowing streets. I decided to bring 10 or so rolls of 400H that I had been hoarding as I felt Japan was the best justification for it and honestly the 400ISO, f/2 at 1/50th is sometimes not adequate. This would make a lot of sense.
Natura 1600 is the perfect cloudy / early evening outdoor film. Such a shame that they discontinued it. I would happily sacrifice all other Fuji film stocks for Fuji to just bring this one back. It is certainly not a sunny day film.
...I have one Natura in the freezor and am scared to shoot it, but I will have to soon as the sensitivity is going down...
Fuji 800 is still produced for those underwater cameras so if you extract them that'll be the closest thing to Natura. Kind of expensive for 27exp but I guess if you're really looking for the Natura look $15 is better than $200
who r you? where's baxter?
Hey Jason random idea, hear me out: You could get into anamorphic photography and then compare the look of that to the results out of the X-Pan
I'm pretty sure he's been using animorphic lenses on and off for a bunch of his videos lately
I swear this was the look they were trying for with The Last Samurai. Why does nothing look as fresh and pastel as this anymore?
always love seeing your uploads
the brutal building shot at 7:26 has this hyper-urban feel like it's out of a Tati or Burton film
This video is my first time seeing results from this film stock and I think it looks really nice, some scenes you shot turned out perfect. I'd love to have it for a winter trip to Iceland because I got the impression the sunlight is not as bright there - I packed plenty of Portra 800 (because I like the look of it, wasn't expecting to need the speed) when I went, but I could definitely have used another stop here and there either to avoid motion blur or increase depth of field.
I'm more than happy to drink a Flamin' Hot Mountain Dew daily if Fuji starts making Natura 1600 again (or at least Neopan 1600)
Man I really really love your videos!
Dang these look to freaking good wth
Im from the District and this was an amazing video ! Been down a rabbit hole of your content 🔥
My dad found a roll of this as we were moving away from DC earlier this year. I still have it just sitting in my fridge with no idea when to shot it until now
Color negative still camera film stocks are generally daylight balanced because you can change the color balance when printing (which is what they were originally designed for). Not sure why this is different for motion picture films, but I assume it must be less convenient to do the color adjustment.
Use to love this when it was in production. My default film. It shouldnt be QUITE this grainy though, thats definitely the expiration.
I'd expect wildlife photographers back in the days would have happily chosen this filmstock. It would tick most of the boxes they would've been looking for.
oh my zod. i hope that lady on red couch with wall art pic is available in print. i'm in love ❤
I've clocked that After-Dark collection from Liam Wong there...
He's a master
Awsome shots, loved the one at 4:00
You should try Kodak 500T pushed 1 stop and developed in (!) ECN-2, as it should be. It's quite similar, 1000iso and Tungsten balanced.
It's also really cheap! Don't know if it is in US though, but you can ship it to Europe if you needed.
Sports and big ass zoom lenses. That is what daylight balanced high iso film is for.
this is crazy i was literally just on your channel page lookin for videos and you uploaded while i clicked an older one to watch
Finally a new video 👌👌👌 more more more!
You know, I got a roll a few years back in Japan and keep it in my F2 for a while, shoot 6 exposure thinking I'll find one day to do something with this high ISO film. Then forgot about it for several years - and a friend wanted to learn photography - handed her my old Nikon with this film loaded in it and a 50 f1.4 lens. Little did she know her first roll was this stock.
This rules
Hope you got to see the results (:
Love this video and your content in general. And meeting you in Hamburg!
Ridiculously beautiful! I am sure if this was still made it would be in demand. Odd it is daylight balanced 😳🤷
Id imagine it would be fantastic for full moon nature shots.
I have to re-organize my list of Fuji films I want to see return. This one goes near the top.
I miss this film so much, man
I don’t shoot film but I have watched most of your videos because I’m a discerning viewer with excellent taste and the images from this film look superb to me (on my TV), like set photos from a high-end late 60s sci-fi movie. (The architecture is also cool af, which probably helps) 👌
I’ve now also re-watched the Lomo Metropolis video because you mentioned it (the film) :)
This makes me feel better, seeing other people use this film kinda made me jealous, now not so much.
That final shot though 🫡 looking Edward Hopperesque
I'm just sitting here, chillin, watching the video and having a salad from domino's and out of nowhere ... 1:44
LOOKS GOOD
Monica's Fairly Oddparents reference at 10:42 made me smile :)
Two things that need to be brought back: Fuji Nature 1600, and Snack Wraps.
So glad to see the Natura love! Used this for concerts and interiors in my F3 when I first started shooting and it was like, $20/roll. Unreal stock, forever RIP.
Really enjoyed the 3:4 aspect ratio👍🏼
Only shot one roll back on 2014 with olympus xa, and had maybe two photos that I liked, but loved the film and thought I‘ll had another try. Well now I‘m searching for a fujifilm recepies
Timely, I just put up some 1600 and other expired fuji on the bay last week. First come first served. :D
I think that the name of the film being Natura points to it being balanced to be shot under sun light conditions, without previous knowledge of the film I think the wildlife photo is the right fit for it.
Came for the grain stayed for the days.
A film so nice it got it's own special camera. And it's cheaper than the film!
Snake cut is pretty cool
you edit your video footage to look like this film buddy.
the cuts between vid and phto blended a together for me
totally rad
8:40 maybe it’s daylight balanced and 1600 iso because it’s meant to shoot nature photography at high shutter speed (hence: natura)
I love how you just stuck "Oppenhiemer was mid" in there and just kept it rollin'.
9:47 That's the excitement every time we try to get the shot.
“This IS the ride!”
really impressed by your youtube channel.
Wild seeing a video from you in DC but then again, I feel like you're familiar with the area
I feel like you were back in the zone with this set
Skateboarding, sports, or racing would be pretty nice on this film.
these building exterior/interior person filled images are dope, my friend... more street, less falling down wrecked properties in the desert photography is the direction your shooting should head towards... that goes for your camera road trip buddy, Clyde, as well... i mean this in a good way...
O happy grainy day!!
I’m glad I bought tons of this at low prices in the old days.
Love how Jason keeps not doing research or understanding the stuff he’s talking about. Always cool to see from a channel with so much reach telling people stuff that’s just wrong. Every video.
Good video. I have like 10 rolls of this film stock left in my fridge from years ago that I haven’t gotten around to shooting yet.
i love this
You might need this fast of film with daylight balance for very fast shutter speed applications like sports? Race cars?
The time has come.
I have 3 rolls in the freezer and luckily I got it before the covid film hype came in and fucked the prices :)
Shot a roll out in Santa Fe, NM and it was awesome in the morning and evening.
Great video and shots dude.
Also, I agree on the metropolis comparison when it comes to saturation overall.
mmm. yummy grainydays
