I live 3 minutes from Ali's childhood home. My dad tells me when he was younger and he would meet Ali in the 70s when he was suspended from boxing, he would come to our corner with a big truck full of holy Qurans and give them away and he'd play with kids and shadow box with everyone all the time. This was when he was already super famous. Makes me proud to be from Louisville!!!

I watched this opening with my mother. She was a huge Ali fan. She used to get me out of bed in the middle of the night as a child and we both watched his fights. It was wonderful. She had tears in her eyes, watching him like this. i wrote to him after these Olympics, telling him what he meant to me and to my mother, and I got a photograph back from him with his autograph, very shakely. I had it framed and it is in my hallway. Whenever I have to do something difficult during a day, I look at his smiling face and think: well, if he could do that, then I can do this. So - thank you Muhammed. For the memories and for your stength. And for passing it on to me!
I will Never forget this moment when he emerged I remember saying yes the greatest! We have the greatest lighting the torch, up until that moment no one knew who the final person was! RIP
We cried...because we realised Ali had, all along been carrying the torch for us. ...and being sick had not held him back.... Ali.. a true giant who walked amongst us...my hero, my mentor.
I know it’s been six years since you wrote this, but wow very well written! I admire Ali because he had faults as we all do but like Bob Costa said on the documentary, he stuck to his principals and it cost him. RIP Muhammad!
You just know they were bowing their heads as he walked through the pearly gates. And when he entered, He stood before the Big Guy and said, “I’m a bad Man, I’m still so pretty”.. And the Big Guy looked at back at Him, smiled and said, Yes you are...
Wow his strength showed even outside of the ring.He dealt with his disease as he did in the ring, with grace and confidence. He was not going to hide behind the curtain,he still made public appearances until he could no longer do so.Ali was a champ in more ways than he even realized.God Bless you Ali. Your body is now free from Parkinson disease.God bless his family and give them strength and peace
I saw this in 1996 as it happened (on TV, of course)... it was an awesome moment, and very touching... it left me in tears... I was very happy for Muhammad Ali.
It's unexplainable to youngsters. It was a gotcha moment. No one seen it coming, there's no person that could of topped Ali. It brought everyone from everywhere together. Unforgettable, unexplainable. Thee original G.O.A.T..!
*_Rest In Paradise....You are legend!_* *_Muhammad Ali was indeed the greatest. He was so much more than a boxer. The man was a real souljah for justice, that actually stood for what he believed in._*
People said the cauldron looked like a large order of McDonald's French fries when it was lit, but this was truly a touching moment. Rest in peace, Ali!
Oh Ali. You had held a torch for us long before you held the Olympic Torch. I am grateful to the powers that be that entrusted Ali with this, despite his unpredictable symptoms. Put faith in Ali, and he will come through, and he did! Love you Ali. Always have.
"Everywere u look u see people wipping their tears..." it was very hard to hold ur tears...!! Thou r indeed the #Greatest and u will always b....Rest in Paradise Champ...!!
I love seeing this moment from the Olympics over and over from the city I call home and I was able to attend a few Olympic events with my family. Ali was a wonderful individual that brought many people together all over the world. I'm sorry he had to suffer thru this illness for the last several decades of his life. I hope someday soon there will be a breakthrough cure for it. Yes he will never be forgotten.
Ali spoke for our generation and laid his career on the line for his beliefs in 1967. For those who grew up with him and remember how he was vilified by so many in the 60's, it's heartwarming to know today he is perhaps the most loved person on the planet. For those of us who remember the magnificent athlete he was,it's heart-rending to see what Parkinson's has done to him. But in the end, to see the courage and dignity he's shown through all the struggles it's an inspiration. Long live Ali!
Not only was muhammad Ali the greatest in boxing but he was also a great human being a special human being who was loved by every body no matter what colour or race he was a blessed human being R.I.P
I had to come tonight to pay my respects to The Champ. May your journey be swift as your cross through the veil, watch down from above and guide our steps on the path of peace for all the world to follow. Rest in Peace.
No matter good or bad things about Muhammad Ali ..his well earned place as No1 sportspersonality of the century underlines his importance as a symbol an icon..through boxing he transcended to so much more... He will always have my greatest respect..
The best kept secret and surprise in sport's history was Ali lighting the Olympic torch in 1996. A man who triumphed over so many adversities in his life. The entire world was watching this superb athlete and humanitarian achieve a remarkable climax to a life lived large.
Rest in Peace to the Champ. The triple OG of the GOAT category when speaking about athletes. Ali will forever be one of the Baddest Men to ever step into the ring.
He's undoubtedly the greatest. Although I don't think he should be doing these sorts of events anymore, just my personal opinion. It was lovely to see him in London 2012 at the Olympic flag raising, but despite his aide (wife?) asking him repeatedly to "grab the flag, Muhammad" and "wave to the people, Muhammad", tragically, he just couldn't do it. He just stood there looking frail. It was too heartbreaking to watch. At least in 1996 he had enough control to do the job well. Of course we'd love to see more of him, but it pains me to say he's just not up to it. He's still a hero, though.
That man murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick...he was so mean he made medicine sick....what pure greatness...rest now champ....we love you
He is the greatest athlete who ever lived, no debate. People say Jordan...but I guarantee if you showed a pictures of Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan to some kid in some third world country somewhere he would recognize Ali first
The Ali legacy will live forever he was once in a lifetime personalty Allah blessed this genius of a man with everything He lightened and inspired millions of people from all nations no individual was more loved than Ali and the light will shine in every heart. May Allah rest his soul and grant the highest of Jannah .Many will come and many shall go but never a Muhammad Ali
I remember watching this when it happened but i had no idea what i was looking at as i was so young but man looking back on that moment now its got me lost for words literally
Why on earth would that be? those guys got involved in a war which was absolutely nothing to do with them and if you know your history it was america's fault the war started!
