    I have had my share of these heads, both the previous versions made in New Zealand, and the current version made in China. I buy them bare, and go through them. I check and size the guides, cut the seats, and deck them. I use valves from Ferrea, Engine Pro, and Enginetech in them. I finish them with whatever spring is needed. They always require some cleanup. The head you showed is worse than I usually see, but not surprising.
    The heads work well once everything is gone through. With a good valve job and attention to the area on each side of the seat they flow great. I consider the work I do to these heads when new to be typical, and you absolutely can not use these as they come, right out of the box.
    Thanks for the video.

    Casting sand wow !
    I feel your pain. Two things recently for me. Upgraded to a mini starter in my 81 W250 Saturday, yesterday it "clicked" a couple times before doing its thing. Guess I'll see how it plays out.
    Other thing is worse. Put the pistons in my 68 318, had the decks cut .010 to get the KB167s at zero deck. Machine shop said it was really crooked and needed about. 012 shaved off. No biggie with .040 gaskets that'll still give .038 quench clearance, I ain't concerned.
    So I get the pistons in and the decks aren't cut straight, about zero on the exhaust side and .010 up on the intake side. Stuff happens, its back at the shop now. Hopefully he can get it straight and with a thicker gasket it'll be OK, otherwise a different block I guess.
    You gotta check everything !

    Oh NO!! This same thing happened to myself and The Dodge Whisperer. We also purchased some EQ heads but from a machine shop that did some porting to them. They were a disaster waiting to happen. Full of black sand , lots of poorly threaded holes, and poor machining. Sorry you got the same deal with the Black Sand. If you haven't already, I would recommend chasing all the threads in the head. My thread were so poorly done that the intake wouldn't suck down and I had to chase all of them. I spent a lot of time blowing out all the sand in mine, But after seeing yours I really wish I could of taken mine apart. Good Luck Tim! I hope you can make them work!

    Good catch! The valve job looks pretty weird, seems like a 90 degree cut under the seat and then something like 60 degrees to blend it to as cast port. The 90 degree is not necessarily a good thing, and can't be fixed. And checking the seats with alcohol or something else will not tell that much unless there is a big leak. It should be checked with vacuum and without valve springs, or if doing with liquid, light check springs. Valve springs, especially stronger ones, can do a great job of sealing when the valve is steady, even with a bent valve. But of course this method reveals any major leaks. It's not a bad idea to lap the valves with fine grade to see the pattern in the valve and seat, that it goes all around.

    Very poor quality control. I have used 2 sets of the EQ heads made in Australia & they were top quality. One set on a 98 5.2 and another on a 96 5.9. Where were these made? I believe the main reason the factory heads crack is because of the induction hardened exhaust seats, the original EQ heads used hardened exhaust seats that were installed into the casting (no induction hardening). Do these heads have valve seats installed? A fella who runs a machine shop that works on a lot of these engines said that he has never had a head with cracked seats leak coolant but if the engine is run very hard (like in a truck pulling heavy loads) a valve can get burned. On any new or re-man head I always lap the valves to check for proper valve to seat sealing. Just put a bit of Dykem on the seat, lap the valve slightly with fine lapping compound then check both the valve & seat for proper contact. If there is any space on the seat that has some Dykem remaining lap a bit more to insure proper seating. On the valve the lapping process will leave a light gray trace on the machined surface of the valve. That stuff that you dug out of the intake passages is casting sand that should have been removed prior to assembly and indicates poor assembly quality. Places doubt on the quality of the rest of the work.

    • @318willrun
      @318willrun  Рік тому

      The NZ heads were better heads. These are cast in China, but machined and assembled in the USA. These heads were never even given a glance by the machinist or assembler.

After seeing all this isn't other potential problems should be considered even after the sand is cleaned what about guides having the correct clearance, don't want to run the engine a few times and then stick a valve unexpectedly which will bend a pushrod maybe hurt a cam lobe. Think Id take them to a good machinist and talk about putting K line bronze thin wall liners in the guides. Which ever way you go Bud expected to spend more time and money.

    "EQ" heads are not what they were 20 years ago. I bought a set and was pissed to say the least. I did a video. For what you pay you can get a set of trick flows for a few hundred more. Valves were bent, freeze plugs not installed correctly. Cast flash everywhere, coolant passage blocked, valve guides were sticky and most of them knurled not honed. etc. If they were closer to me o would have thrown them through their shop window. 🤬
