Peugeot was pretty known for making bonkers rally cars back in the day, the 206 was raced in the WRC, and it won the drivers championship in 2000 and 2002. :D
In the year 2000 (yes I'm not a Millienmum), I ran a Peugeot dealership in Sydney and we couldn't giveaway the base 206 whilst the GTI model had huge waiting lists. The 206 was a great handling car and I'm sure the MCM team will build a great project car. FunFact, after leaving a Peugeot dealership i joined Suzuki Australia as their GM and I launched the Suzuki Swift Sport in Australia in 2006. The media launch was at Canberra and I fondly remember driving the car around the old Police driver Training Centre. I owned an earlier Swift GTI that i used in club motorsport for many years. Now after a Swift Sport so my son and I can compete against each other.
Well, as motorsport pedigree goes, Suzuki can only admire Peugeot achievements 😅 Multiple rally wins and championships on highest level, a lot of LeMans success and they even done F1 for a brief moment in 90s. My first own car was 206 GTI and i loved that thing, good luck Marty with the mods 😄
Gotta be said though as LeMans is in france and peugeot is a French company they may have invested slightly more resources than a Japanese company that spends most of its racing r&d budget on motorcycles also European car companies had something of an advantage in wrc back then as 10 out of 14 rallies were in europe
@@dudefullofjelly Counterpoint: it's true most WRC rounds were (and still are) in Europe, but so were the Japanese WRC teams. Subaru and Mitsubishi was based in the UK, Toyota was based in Germany. It's the same now as well. Hyundai World Rally Team is based in Germany, Toyota is now based in Finland.
Peugeot was one of the most successful manufacturers in motorsport in the 90s!! They won multiple championships in WRC, won at le Mans, and supplied engines in F1. Up until around 2003 (before the x07 cars hit the roads) their road cars were known for good handling and driver engagement on a low budget, the 206 being one of them. Even though Marty's car is a base 1.6 it definitely has great potential. I've personally driven a base 1.1 and although it was shit slow it was very fun to chuck about!
They were doing great even in the '60s, winning the Safari Rally in '63, '66, '67 & '68 with a Peugeot 404. They were known as having seriously strong, reliable cars that still had decent performance - rather like Mercedes' reputation back in the '70s and '80s.
Ive been a fan since the MCM since around 2009 (9 y/o), so im familiar with music videos like TRD Lazer and personas that were played in the sleeper cressida, but NEVER, and i mean NEVER did i ever expect to witness Marty & Moog hacking it up to frenchcore (which Moog most likely produced). These guys never fail to amaze me.
An instant MCM classic. A crappy but potentially interesting car, some useful information, a hilarious music video, and some funny stories at the end. I generally enjoy everything you guys do, and if someone came out of the blue and asked me which videos I liked the best I'd probably tell them the bigger builds but to be honest the "nugget" videos may really be my favorites - I think it boils down to entertainment value. I think I'm most impressed with the result of the bigger builds but the nuggets are way more entertaining content.
Actually the TU5 in this car is a completely epic engine. In race trim these make 260bhp. It is one of great 4 cylinder small capacity engines to come out of Europe. Plenty of parts to extract plenty of power. Can also build the 206 like Lego with items from other Peugeot's. The car actually has a load of potential. PSA (Peugeot&Citroen) are also the most successful brand in the WRC and also have outright wins in Lemans. My first car was a 1995 Peugeot 306 with the same engine in 8V guise. Peugeot kind of lost their way with the 206 and up until recently which is a shame as they were kings in the 80's and 90's.
The TU5JP engine is shit. Marty would've been better getting the 206 GTi, a slightly better engine than the TU5JP but still shit compared to the M16A engine. Unless the 206 is getting an engine swap, it's getting Chopped big time
Still rolling with a TU5JP4S in my Citroen C2 VTS - heavily modified with high lift cams, springs retainers, build bottom end to withstand the load, ported and polished heads, Its really fast and really stable on the corners amd woul defenetly smash this Swift. The only unreliable part in this engine is the coilpacks - they tend to break and do missfires and what not. The person who build mine is a Rally driver and he really knows whats he is doing with that TU5 - his words for this engine "we race them so hard that even with no oil they still finish the race no problem"
Should have definitely taken the 206 GTi. Owned a few pug's in the past and my stripped out 206 GTi was a great little car. 138Bhp 2.0 engine pulled well once the car was stripped of some weight. Nice suspension and tyres and they handle well.
@@jacobfoster6773 they only had low max(!) power. but max power says nothing about the actual power they had heaps of torque at low rpm and actually were quite fast. max torque was 195Nm at ~4100rpm. compared to a Honda B16A2 with 150Nm at 7000 (!). i had a Honda EG6 (160hp) and i also had a Peugeot S16 (the 2.0 135hp thing) and the peugeot was faster until 100km/h and after that they were very similar. uphill the peugeot was ALWAYS faster. by far. But dont confuse the 195Nm i mentioned with the torque they measured on the dyno (202Nm the pug and 218Nm the swift). they are not 1:1 comparable
Not a major Peugeot fan myself but some of their rally (e.g. Paris-Dakar) entries have been absolute animals. You could do much worse than convert this one to a rally mod after you've done your track face off against the Suzuki; that'd be great fun and in the spirit of this being the greatest off-road channel on UA-cam! :D
A "how to rally a regular car" episode would actually be a lot of fun. Ask their local rally school to help with the prep, ask what they do to make those cars last and fast and then send it outback.
They basically ended up owning whatever motorsport they ever entered, and then got bored and left the sport altogether to make the most boring shit they could dream up.
I remember chasing Marcus Gronholm down a dual carriageway with my dad driving our Golf 2.0 GL estate when Wales Rally GB was on... we had to do over 100 to catch him up!
As a former owner I can tell you the 206 is a great platform. Peugeot has a knack for getting handling right. Plus just 2 springs are enough since the rear is torsion bar. Also, at least on mine, you had storage under the passenger seat. Just lift the seat bottom. Great place for my gun and a couple of extra mags. The swift has no chance if they put the right wheels and tires on the 206.
After all these years of watching MCM I am still glad you both are doing this projects with cars that might be accessible for average viewers as well. Highly appreciated, enjoy the project!
The 1.6 TU5 engine is golden. You can NA tune it nicely. Goes nicely with the low weight of the 206. Nice car to drive. I have a 207 1.4 and I am equally happy with it. Very reliable too...
Ahahah, as Frenchies we've seen way too many Peugeot 206 being modified here (even by us), but we're still very interested in seeing what Aussies would do to them! Good luck with this little project! 😄
I love the fact that you now have a project car that is cheap in Finland as well. I love watching regular content as well but seeing what mods you'll do to this pooshou 206 really excites my eyeballs. 😎
Yes! 😃 my dad and i literally jump out of the couch of excitement! My dad has a 206 GTi, and myself a 206 S16 1.6 16v like Marty’s! We been watching you ever since you guys started in Marty’s moms driveway, and we absolutely love every single episode you make! 😃 Thank you for being such a big part of my dad and mine’s passion of cars 😃👍
9:00 is all u need to see EPIC .. this might probabably been 1 of the most french car used to go to amsterdam and back !!! LMAO even the red white and blue on the wall .. keep it commin Moog !!
1.6 16v from PSA are some of the most if not the most used engine in Spain for rallying, tones of posibilities with some of then getting crazy horsepower without needing a turbo. Its not difficult to get 150-160hp out of them
@@GRPABT1 Stock they make 110hp if I recall so it's a pretty significant bump from stock, in rallye application they make about 200hp and the "super 1600" race version made about 230hp. For an N/A 1.6 engine that's some pretty respectable figures since we're talking about engines that have an usable power band, there's also no reason why you couldn't slap a turbo on it
After over 10 years of watching MCM I actually cant believe a frech car is in the race. Finally something new! :D I drive an old Citroen Saxo 1.6 16V (very similar engine) slightly modified making around 140hp, I have this car since 13 years and I absolutely love it! Living in Austria these car are becoming really rare. The challenge is definately going to be fun! :D
As a former owner of a 1.6 GLX model 206 (2001), please keep the 1st gen front bumper Marty! And get the first gen taillights alongside (if budget suffices) 1st gen bumper - the rounded appearance just gives such a friendly and happy-go-lucky look. The car is a joyous ride but be careful with the slack gearbox, gear-changing needs to be noice and tight 👌🏻 Also yes the 2.0 GTi is sporty and fast but the 1.6 is a well balanced power to weight (especially like you say for daily use). Ultimately Marty - Do what you like with the happy 206, it’s yours to enjoy so have as much fun as possible with it! 🤙🏻 Genuinely impressed with Marty’s purchase, much love from the UK ✌🏻
As a pretty long time french viewer, i can't wait to see what's next for this. Almost everyone in France had or drove in a 206. Also good luck because it is indeed what we call here "une grosse merguez"
Peugeot have got a huge rallying and racing pedigree lol. I had two 206s which were both crap and very likeable at the same time. This is pretty cool and has a lot of potential. Love the music dance hahah
Well that came out of nowhere. 😂 “So now we get to experience it in all of its glory. And it is pretty exciting. We’ve never had one of these cars on the show before. So we get to explore a whole… a whole culture! A whole culture of excitement what an absolute pile of shit.” Had me crying laughing lol
I went in a 93 205 when I was a teenager and it was insanely fast and the handling was incredible. It was not a GTI so the GTI would have been crazy. Pugs are great cars well they were in the 90s. I hope Marty has a great time with this car.
As a frenchman, i'm happy you guys can shine the light on the 206, having one myself i assure you it's a fun, dirt cheap car you can throw around (its rear end likes to step our) ! FYI, the "gti 180" are actually called 206 RC here, it's the highest end with a 171hp 2l, and a great chassis / suspension. Too bad you got an absolute crap example x) Also, you can find 206 s16 or "gti" for 3-5k € !
When I first started watching mighty mods 10 years ago, I found you guys through my first car (a 206 1.1). I was longing to find mods to make it better, never happened. Long story short never thought I'd see the day you had a french car, I still own french cars in my fleet too! I've got a Renault Clio RS197 which is pinnacle french! Recommend a Renault RS for sure, unreal track weapons
😂 priceless episode lads I was in stitches laughing!😂... check out some clips of Richard Burns in his wrc Pug 206 to see what those little nuggets are really capable of... Had alot of various Pug's over the years, best 2 models imo were the 306 HDi phase 3 (unbelievable handling) , and the 607 (pure comfort). Big love from the Irish shores 🇮🇪 ☘
Should have gone a 306gti, great little pocket rockets. Had one years ago and it was a fun little car. Problem with older French cars is they fall apart in Oz, the plastics all become brittle and the things fall apart in our heat. I had internal components literally melt when trying to use them one summer.
I'm so happy you guys bought a 206. I bought a 2003 206 CC with the same 2.0L engine as GTI and it's amazing. We bought it as a compromise between me wanting to take my misses on the back of my motorbike and her wanting to feel safe in a metal box. Haven't regretted it and I upgrading and modifing as the budget allows. Can't wait for more content about this amazing little car.
@argy mutt Golf's are overrated. I've had a 206cc and it's probably the best car I've ever owned. Surprisingly quick, good handling, even though it's a convertible and practically bulletproof. I now have a 208 gti and it shits all over mk5/6 Golf Gti's in terms of performance and value for money. Even compared to a Mk7 GTI, it's equally as quick, equipped and only half the price.
I spent time in Ireland and my eyes were opened - the Peugot 206 proved legendary handling and power. I hope your 206 continues that story for yah! I love how they look.
Just want to say MCM, I found you at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, and having all that content really got me through a weird time to say the least. Now I'm back going through some more heavy stuff but Marty and Moog faffing about with absolute nuggets is still helping me out. Keep on keeping on.
The Techno Scene was the best haha Love how you guys throw stuff like that in, with the humor and satire, makes this so entertaining. Good Job!!! As for the car..................🙄I am trying to keep an open mind 🤣
Longing for the day you guys do a 106 GTi (the best French hot hatch), however the TU5JP engine in that 206 is very similar to the 106 GTi engine. Great engines, torsion rear axle and great fun to drive!
the 106 s16 is definitely a great car bu i would never call it the best hot hatch knowing the 205 gti, r5 turbo, clio v6, clio williams and 206 rc exist
The 206 is actually a pretty successful model, I think you’ll do great. Needs some mods to chop the swift sport, would have needed the gti to get the pep.
As a French, i cant wait to see what you’re gonna do with this mad nugget 😂 i was not expecting that 😂 If you can find Pe🤮geot Sport parts, go for it ! The super 1600 215hp is the same engine than you have actually.
My god XD Can't wait to see where you'll go with that ^^ Beware of the rear axle, bushings tends to desintegrate. Apart from that, cheaply made but quite poky and great handling from stock. I'M NOT A MONSTER!!!! Love from France !
The laugh on the first drive after buying it... Absolutely relateable! Bought a 106 1.4 2 months ago, sadly has to go since it's too far gone, but such a blast to drive. Such an amazing car.
That TU5JP4 motor has a ton of support in Europe, they used it in a bunch of hot superminis like the Peugeot 106 GTi and Citroen C2 VTR/VTS as well as their larger models, looking forward to seeing what you guys do with it!
Great engine - although hopefully they don’t have any headgasket issues! Mine has just started leaking oil as all TUs seem to at the front left oil galley
@@morganhartman1508 My xsara started leaking coolant from the headgasket.. Drove it for about 6 years after that without even fixing it and never had oil and coolant mix up.
Now this is a curveball! I never expected a 206. My first car was a 1.4, 75 hp... Lots of understeering until I learned to lift off oversteer. Good thing I never crashed it tho, those things are basically cans on wheels, like Citroën Saxos. Can't wait for the next episode.
I did my mechanics apprecticeship at Peugeot in the early 90's. 205 and 309 GTi with the 1.6 & 1.9 16V engine were great cars. Then there was the 405 Mi16 which too was cool is the 90's. Gear linkages on the 206 were common to fall apart. Noticed a light switch / stalk fall out of the bag on the floor which were common to fail.
Listening to them try to pronounce the companies name, the French Step music, and the cool story bro stories about trips to France just had me rolling. I can't wait to see the challenges before and after mods! Keep it up guys! And Moog, I wanna buy that song!
Do they have those in Australia? A 172, 182, 197, 200, can't really go wrong with any one. A 205 GTI is like £15-20k these days, silly money, but they're pretty much museum pieces at this point. If sticking with Peugeot a 106 GTI would be a better choice; £8 -10k, 900kg and change. 'Only' 120bhp but that's absolutely plenty in a tiny car that seats you on the floor, every corner can be taken on three wheels and in which your legs are the crumple zone.
@@the.villan Yep there’s a decent following for the Renaultsport cars here. We got everything from the original 172 right through to the last Megane trophy r - they always sold well. We don’t get much in the way of the base model cars though as Peugeot, Citroen and Renault aren’t popular brands here. We also didn’t get a lot of the smaller models here at all (106, twingo etc). Australia also got a great bunch of special edition cars in true Renaultsport fashion (mainly cool decals, Akra exhausts and placards with F1 driver signatures). I have an “F1 edition” 182 cup which was one of 30 which came in racing blue with some Gordini stripes and a placard on the ceiling with some signatures :)
@@the.villan Yeah French cars are niche here but when we do buy them we choose (probably "chose" now sadly) the sports models more than most places. I have a Clio 3 RS 200 - they *only* sold the RenaultSport version here, so I get a bit excited when I see the "weird" regular 4 door/non-widebody ones on UK/Euro TV lol..
@@JN-qj9gf Lmao, yea they used to be everywhere. Not so much these days as they seem to have been overtaken by Ford Fiesta's and Vauxhall Corsa's. On a separate note, I had a white Escort RS Cosworth overtake me yesterday. The things I would do for one of those, way out of my budget unfortunately.
I am so happy you're modifying a 206! I bought a 206 as my first car and I've been modifying it since I first found MCM. You guys were the inspiration I needed to get into modding!
This episode had it all. Mad Nuggets, Crazy True Stories and a Mid episode Rave. Thanks for the epic work. I look forward to seeing the 206 smash the Swift just to see the look on Moog's face. Sorry Moog, you know I luv ya both, but some times you need to be brought down a peg or two, so you can get some exercise climbing back up. Gotta stay fit any way you can.
@@trytthisnowk more turd means more mods and yes the platform is a decade older than the swift, but it is lighter and the tu5 has a racing history, later engines in that class could be found in minis, as bmw departed from the supercharger for the cooper s and switched to a turbo.
I don’t think I’m ever gonna mentally recover from that “dance sequence/mad pelvis thrusting” segment… there’s goes my bottle of medication for the week!! Lmao
I have waited years for this, i'm so excited! As an owner of both a 306 and a 106, one of them having the same engine but 8V, i could not have been more pleased to see this pop up on my feed! Heaps of potential, let's see it chop a swift!
Watch for lift off oversteer, worn top mount bearings, worn control arm bushes and seized torsion bars, other than that with very basic suspension upgrade these are really fun little cars to drive!
I had a 206 for a few years and I absolutely adored it. It was only the base Zest 2 model, but the stock brakes, gearbox and suspension were phenomenal. So much grip and perfect ratios, it didn't matter that it had about 70hp!! 😂 Looking forward to this series, thanks for buying this nugget - makes me want to buy another, maybe this time the GTI.
I drove a 206 as a courtesy car once, it wasn't a GTi and it had more body roll than the Queen Mary in high winds, always loved the goofy little bonnet vent on them too.
A French nugget! My entire motoring history is based around French nuggets, so I'm looking forward to seeing this one! The good news is that they're super cheap to fix when they break, and I can say with absolute certainty, they will break.
I was busy doing other things, but I saw this had uploaded 13 minutes ago. I had a little smile to myself and immediately this took priority! 9:05 onwards - SO GOOD! Also - not as unreliable as an Italian car. When do we see Italian nuggets on the show?!
Peugeot are fabulous cars and very underappreciated here in Australia. I have a T9 308 and it has been superb, no issues, great to drive. Keen to see what you to do it.
They're terrible! Okay... when they work they drive alright, but they're plagued with having continuously electrical problems, sensors failing etc... poor build quality... typical French car. The one I had was nearly exactly the same as Marty's one... same color, same engine, same age... only difference I see is mine had sport seats, which were actually great seats. Mine was completely worn at about 170k km's., engine and gearbox were done, interior was rattling and cracking and the suspension was floppy. After that I bought a Civic which I still drive... almost 400k km's now and it's still much more solid.
@Swoosh & WyTiger We paid 900 euros for hers, including a fresh inspection. It's a proper nugget, has 200k kms, more dings than martty's example, has no power (50kW!) but even then I absolutely love driving it, it's the most fun car I drove so far: light, nimble and communicative. The diesel engine is tiny, the muffler fell off once and you could barely hear a difference thanks to how already muffled the exhaust is by the turbo and the cat. I look for excuses to borrow it on a regular basis :P
@@MickayG they do have bad build quality, and the gearboxes are not the best. But the engines, they are just incredibly reliable. And smooth to. Some of the best engines ever to come out of Europe, and easily capable of outlasting the car twice when half descent maintained. And they ride really good.
Fam been driving a 2010 Peugeot 4007 basically and suv with a 2.2hdi diesel. They like it much more than out previous b5.5 passat. The suspension simplicity and sitting positions is the best. Plus selectable awd and diff lock its basically a tractor lol.
@Swoosh & WyTiger Did you even read my comment or stopped after terrible? I've owned one for 7 years and the car was nothing but trouble... lots of electrical issues from window and wiper motors failing, the odometer going out and finding a shop that actually specialized in fixing those specific odometers (if that isn't a big hint something breaks very often), suspension was completely worn out at 150k, exhaust rotted out back to front, bad quality interior... the whole dash rattled and squeaked over bumps... it was a money pit. It did drive okay and the seats were great, but the engine was weak even for the supposed 80kw. It yer typical French small hatch, as soon as they got some years on them and are over 100/120k they start to fall apart. Compare that to my '07 Civic which I now own for 10 years, it hasn't missed a single beat; never broken down, never any electrical issues, suspension still solid, original exhaust and clutch and its creeping up to 400k... it will be by the end of the year. Never EVER again will I buy a Peugeot... or any French car, piss poor quality.
A must do would be a kit of bushings for the gear selector, the throw from factory is kilometric and if never had a regrease, the elbows and joints frictions themselves away making the shifting even clunkier and harder. Also, keep an eye on rear wheel allignment, this scheme tends to "open its legs", depends on maintenance done by the former owner :( Also its not a peugeot from that era if the door retainers dont make a loud CRACK when opening :')
I just sold my 206 gti 180. I always wanted MCM to get one, or a base 206 gti. I was so excited when I saw this, though a little confused at the 1.6 litre choice... Still, with all the go fast bits you can get for Pugs, and how well they handle, it will be an awesome set of videos.
I had a 206 for my first car and I loved it. Handled fantastically, reasonably comfortable, reliable (in three years the only thing that broke was the cooling fan). Looking forward to this series
Was not expecting a Peugeot 206. Was really hoping for a Renault Clio. Also, Moog, I would swear Infected Mushroom has been sampling your music. Marty’s locked himself into P3UG-8RO now for the rego plate.
For the better part of a decade now, on my worst days, or some of my best, it’s like y’all know, and post a new video to either turn my day around, or finish it off strong, thank you MCM.

I was about to mention they have some rally heritage. 💪🏼
Peugeot 205 T16 legendary group B rally car
These guys never fail to amaze me.
truely the best there is
That was a good moment. All the clichés of the genre.
Its all about the nuggets. The USP of these guys is their humility, ability to entertain and music. Love it!
Fun fact- the 206 front passenger seat should lift up and pull open to reveal a secret storage compartment. Might be some surprises in there.

Holy shit I completely forgot about that
Actually the TU5 in this car is a completely epic engine.
I had a 307 with a tu5jp4, verry good engine ! Really tough.
The TU5JP engine is shit. Marty would've been better getting the 206 GTi, a slightly better engine than the TU5JP but still shit compared to the M16A engine. Unless the 206 is getting an engine swap, it's getting Chopped big time
The Tu5Jp4 is in my opinion better than the XU and has got a ton of aftermarket upgrades.
I'm so happy they got a car we Europeans can actually afford. 😊

The hakken needed some work though. lol
The XTC face is bang on (as a dutch person to say this 😂)

Should have definitely taken the 206 GTi. Owned a few pug's in the past and my stripped out 206 GTi was a great little car. 138Bhp 2.0 engine pulled well once the car was stripped of some weight. Nice suspension and tyres and they handle well.
How did they get so little power from a 2.0?
@@jacobfoster6773 straight N/A no Variable Value Timing. They made a 180bhp abit later on with a 2.0
@@jacobfoster6773 they only had low max(!) power. but max power says nothing about the actual power they had heaps of torque at low rpm and actually were quite fast. max torque was 195Nm at ~4100rpm. compared to a Honda B16A2 with 150Nm at 7000 (!). i had a Honda EG6 (160hp) and i also had a Peugeot S16 (the 2.0 135hp thing) and the peugeot was faster until 100km/h and after that they were very similar. uphill the peugeot was ALWAYS faster.

Also, keep an eye on rear wheel allignment, this scheme tends to "open its legs", depends on maintenance done by the former owner :(
Also its not a peugeot from that era if the door retainers dont make a loud CRACK when opening :')
Same! I had a 2.0 HDi, surprisingly zippy for 90hp. I still miss that car.
Best MCM episode I saw in a long time. Laughed my ass off.
I am not a fan of Peugeots either but they have been an incredible rally car to be reckoned with for many years.
Was not expecting a Peugeot 206. Was really hoping for a Renault Clio. Also, Moog, I would swear Infected Mushroom has been sampling your music. Marty’s locked himself into P3UG-8RO now for the rego plate.
Surely not... what infected mushroom song you referring to? Keen to have a geez
@@4bidn1 Just today I was listening to Spitfire and parts of it reminded me of 2Sexy.
100% should have gotten a clio. I was looking on carsales and there are a couple tasty clio 182/172’s for like $5-8k 😢
I hope that hardcore tune gets an official release, that was straight HEAT.
For the better part of a decade now, on my worst days, or some of my best, it’s like y’all know, and post a new video to either turn my day around, or finish it off strong, thank you MCM.
