As a citizen of the country you took an oath to defend, it frustrates me to see any homeless veteran. I pray you find employment, stability and fulfillment in this life.
This popping up in my recommendations as I am struggling financially and fearing a layoff at my job... seems like a bad omen. We are all a bad day away from losing everything and being on the streets. God have mercy on everyone in this situation, I pray for the safety, comfort, warmth, and opportunity for all the homeless souls out there. Thank the Lord for a roof over my head and food. I think it's about time that I go drop some food and supplies off at my local shelter again.
Only because i'm presuming america is a joke of a third world country. Other civilized countrys have months of lay off laws and a year of at least 60-80% of what you used to make, and a plethora of other social nets to prevent this kind of bs..

When I was homeless I just kept reminding myself how mankind has lived for hundreds of years without electricity! I made a yurt by glueing tarps together for the sides. Then glued a couple of tarps over the top. I used denatured alcohol stove to cook with( it doesn't smoke) I collected rain water off the roof into 25 gallon totes, then put the lid on them after the rain. A dear friend loaned me a Little buddy heater& propane tank. It was a life saver! Even though my yurt was 144 sq ft, it only used 2 pounds/1/2 gallon/$1.87 of propane a day. That was if I only used at night, on low. Having friends that can get you thru the hard times and good neighbors is very critical!
I'm not sure what winter is going to cost running inverter and a heat pad is how I deal with the colder night. Need heat this is your most efficient e way . I could go with a propane heater but it's South Louisiana we rarely freeze. See a hybrid gets its heat from the internal combustion engine that presents a problem when it comes to efficiency because you are using the gas to get the engine to get hot and I have used an inverter and an electric heating pad then there's the 12 volt things that you can use that would be more efficient a 12 volt electric blanket. Because in a hybrid every kilowatt-hour you are going to generate is going to be with your engine.
Observation: in a recent video about isolation in Antarctica, studies show that the hypocampus part of the brain shrinks over time, leading to memory loss and a reduction in the ability to learn and loss of motivation in general. A companion animal can reduce and even reverse this.
That brings on another financial responsibility, and if taking care of yourself is a burden then a animal just slows you down even more. If you learn to judge caricature and meet good people on the street you have that companionship.You don't have to be with them 24/7 and they don't have to know where you sleep!
Live in northeast....yea I can dig that. I live in isolation. It sucks and I feel like I'm losing social skills daily. Actually got a job out of boredom.

@@georgemartyn5268If the poster means that they submit online applications and resumes, but never hear back….that is not uncommon. Many job openings are posted online without intending to hire, for a variety of reasons (to have back-up candidates, to placate overworked co-workers that more staff is coming (but isn’t), etc.). Many online applications don’t ever reach a person, as the easy process leads people to overaply, and they get flooded with unqualified applicants. But you can try to get around this. If you think you think you make a decent impression, better to briefly as If you can drop off a CV to a manager in person, saying briefly would love to work there if they have an opening, even if short term, and a couple reasons you area good fit. Or find a public, company email address of a boss or hiring manager, and send a brief email that you think your skills would match their needs and your other advantages. I have gotten jobs doing this that I am certain I would not have gotten if I had just applied online and waited. One where I had actually BEEN hired and working there for several months, due to emailing a manager, then I received a rejection for my online application for a similar position.
I was homeless for many years. Here’s another tip that works. I had my tent destroyed by mice. They chewed their way in. When I got another tent I thought of a way so that would not happen again. Take hot peppers chop them up fine. Sprinkle them all around your tent. I never saw another mouse. It’s works!! (You will need to do this at least once a week)
Might I recommend you do what I am doing if the worst thing happens, hopefully it won't. I am doing the same as the man in this video for 6 years. I use a larger tent and use an off the ground camping bed with ceramic tea light holders that I use 8 or 10 hour tea lights in, the ones that people put oil on the dish. I have 6 ceramic holders and the colder it is the more I use. Keep the tent well ventilated, there should be no need to fully close the door. Stay warm and dry all night. Bless you.
I was homeless for 3 years in the 80s and working full time. It made me who I am today. I still have the same mind set and have to slip back into the wilderness every week for my mental health. Great video and hi from the UK!
@@kjsstanley7 How can you be homeless in the UK? A minimum wage job pays for cheap accommodation and food. Unless you drink or do drugs and spent your income on that. This country is not ideal, but considering "what's out there on the market" it's one of the best countries to live in and only a handful you could call better, and not by a large margin.
@tomekkruk6147 As someone who works and is saving for a deposit on a house... no. A minimum wage job does NOT pay for accommodation at all. Unless you want to pay your entire pay, living in some crack head street bedsit.
@@tomekkruk6147 you have to remember years ago things were not that black and white. Imagine being abused as a child and then thrown out onto the streets at the age of 16. Central London was pretty much dog eat dog. You can't get a job without a permanent address so as much as you say you have to either be spending on drink or drugs is pretty much speculation on your part. Especially if you have not been in that situation. There are plenty of reasons as to why people end up on the streets and not just because of drugs or alcohol.

Great info Rob! I spent a few years homeless. It was usually 6 months at a time. The nights that got down to the low 30s were always hard. I had a cheap tent, a 20 degree sleeping bag, an air mattress with two blankets on it. It was the first time I ever slept with a winter hat on in a hoodie with the hood cinched up. My final stretch I boondocked in my van with my dog. We eventually moved into a storage unit then got lucky and got to house sit for a while. Warmer days are ahead brother!
Your van is the best way to live homeless as long as you can keep it running and registered. It will always be a roof over your head that will keep you dry, it can be insulated with corrugated cardboard which can be found for free just about anywhere. Every city has some kind of day labor agency that will provide enough money to keep you alive if you're willing to work and living rent free. I lived and traveled in my van with my disabled son for three years and we never paid to stay anywhere, it can be done. I am retired and so we both have guaranteed incomes. Be migratory, follow the good weather, stay safe and may God bless.
I was only homeless for a couple years but it was enough of a wake up call to sober me up after about 30 years of alcohol and drug addiction. With the help of Jesus Christ, I've been sober and no homeless forover 3 years. God bless 🙏 ☦️
Don't give away your achievement's, it was YOU that gave up drugs & Alcohol not god. Nobody helped you, nobody could help you, Yes they might have encouraged you, they might have supported you to some degree, BUT it was you who did it, so claim the credit don't give it away. You have proved to yourself that you are strong, you have proved to yourself that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Believe in God if that's a help to you, but know this, if you didn't believe in God you still would have got clean because YOU are strong and you can do anything!
Thank you so much for this video! I could talk about this subject forever! I've been homeless, van dweller, since 2005. I was a licensed electrician, teaching in college, when the bottom fell out of my life. I've actually grown to like this lifestyle. I know that might sound odd to some people, but it is the truth. However, the first year or so was a living hell as I tried to get used to living this way. I felt ashamed of myself for being homeless and wouldn't tell anyone. Recently, I had to move back east because the engine died in my old van. I plugged into a family member's porch outlet for electricity while I worked and saved for another vehicle. I love my family but I couldn't get away from that place fast enough!! I'm back out west now and happier than ever!! Heck, from what I can tell, even Jesus Christ was homeless! This lifestyle is definitely not for everyone. As with everything else in life, it's a trade off. If I don't like my surroundings, I'm free to leave them and find something better. My scenic views are always changing. I've seen more in a few years than many will see in their lifetime. Those are a few of the good points. This morning, I was answering the call of nature in the 20 degree, blowing snow out here in the Arizona desert. I'm lonely most of the time. (Although it's easy to do small talk with people, you seldom develop deep relationships). I'm sitting here typing this, praying that my social security check will make it to the bank, before the monthly bills do. I could easily find work where I am currently, but because of some physical issues that I have now, I'm not able to do the work that I did during my working years. I guess my point is that Homelessness, at least in the US, is generally looked upon as some sort of contagious plague. For whatever reason a person might find themselves in this situation, please remember that, that is a fellow human being, just as worthy of love as anyone else. May you be blessed my friend!

I've got a friend who is homeless (by his own choice), But many of the things you said apply to his situation. One of the most eye opening things is the TIME it takes to be homeless! Takes forever to get places on public transportation. Hard to take your clothes to the laundromat on the bus. But if you try to hand wash and hang dry it can take up most of the day. But taking showers, getting food, using the bathroom. I mean, he hardly has time to do anything else but the basics.
I was living out of my car for just short of two years. You're exactly right -- the time you have to invest to go from place to place to get the basics done is astounding. Not to mention going between viable sleeping spots.
@@Ezeudu Yes, that's another thing! My friend has a wide range of parking lots where he sleep! From all-night laundromats to large hospitals and Walmart (in the old days). But you're eright, scheduling your sleep spots is another time suck.
@@Skruddle Someone i know has done that too (sleeping on boats) totally ok if you ask me, as long as you respect the property. I also knew people who where squatters (abandoned building, they've lived there for over 20 years!) unfortunately that building has been demolished last year. I'm just saying, there is many ways to find a good shelter, it is also a matter of daring. A friend of mine, has to deal with homeless people sometimes too because of his work. There is one man who always has the same spot and it is cold AF, and i always wondered, why doesn't he just squat a building? My friend asked him, and he said he doesn't want to break into someone elses property. Well if you ask me, if it is an empty building, owned by either a large corporation OR the government, you bet your ass i'm taking that oppurtunity if i where homeless.
I'm up on a Cot...in a tent...yeah.. definitely need a tent...but stay inside & don't get wet ...& Build a strong tent & hope a 50 mile wind doesn't blow it away...in the Rain...you sound strong.. I almost got a cot several times. The only thing with that is the cold. It’s hard to get and stay warm when there’s cold air underneath you. I had blankets under me for comfort and warmth.

Thank you for some good advice. These days, a great many people are just one paycheck away, from homelessness. I myself have been homeless several times in my life. Summer is fine for here in Canada, but our winters are brutal. As I get older, half a year till 55, and being a woman in menopause, the winters scare me the most. @@alanlee2000 If I may reply to your reply... I too sought to remain homeless once I found out that it was the only way that I as an individual could feel true freedom at that time in my young life. Many tried in vain to bring me back as they put it but it was to no avail as I had my taste and I refused to let it go. The many reasons for my feeling this way at that time are many, deep enough to have left scars internally, mentally as well as outside for everyone to judge me by on first impressions. Plural. We could sit over hot coffee and I could text you stories that would be truly unbelievable as well as leaving you in total wonder as to how I am still alive to this day...yeah, it'd keep you up for hours too. Not all of my life was terrible but it drove me to this conclusion, if I may be brutally honest with you here, and please by no means take these words as being directed directly at you, or anyone now involved in my life...here goes. " 99% of life is what you do with what comes your way, so if life your sucks, then you suck because you refuse to change not for them, but for yourself and your own good ". ie. I had to make lemonade with those yellow sour fruits if ya' dig what I'm saying. Yeah, trial and error got me only so far. It was advise from those whom walked my path and had returned, that gave me wisdom that I had to absorb and retain for my own benefit, and I in turn, re passed that knowledge to those asking the right question. I shared what I'd not only heard, but tried and used in successfully concurrent events throughout my days and travels. These days, we have the internet, and I figured out another way of sharing what I know works, via gathering these videos and sharing them with those asking the right questions. I'm 57, I'm an R-BTK Amputee who had an aneurism on my Aorta, bled out internally and actually died and was brought back, placed into a clinical coma for 7 days, 3 of which I was removed from cold storage and had sections of dead intestine, colon, stomach etcetera removed and patched back together, then brought out of the coma and was told I had 6 months to a year to live minimum, maybe 5 if I were lucky. It's been almost 7 years now since I told that first Doctor that He wasn't going to tell ME that how long I was going to live, and to hand me my prosthetic leg, then to go phuk himself and stay tf out of my room, and my life. Yeah, I told him not to even cross my path or I'd beat him senseless. Dr. Beth Jackson out of Holston Valley Hospital saved my life...not his stupid @$$, and I was set once again on a path in life, yet again in another direction. I got divorced because she was holding me back, holding me down, and I'm not taking it from her either. I gave her the house and car, I'm taking my 4 Pit Bulls, my friend Brian, and we're moving to the Mountains of S.W. Virginia to continue building Shelters and Dugouts for the Homeless who choose to travel via Railway's, and in #OffGrid situations for long term area residential stays for those in the need and this is why I posted the link. That was some good advice. Been in my tent for 2 years now myself and it's not easy. I try to spend most my days away from my camp on my mountain bike so I keep occupied. work has been tough myself. Nice thing is springs around the corner and that's when I enjoy the woods the most. Spring and fall. I don't consider myself homeless I only consider myself houseless. Keep trudging on man it always gets easier. you're only lonely when you're not happy with yourself. ☮️
We all appreciate your honesty. This really makes one realize what you are going through. I have never been homeless but camped in some very rough conditions so I understood some of what you are going through. But then again, I went home when all my cloths were muddy, my food supply ran low or that creepy noise going around my tent at night had me running for the car. Just having a car near by is heaven when out there. No one knows how it is unless they lived it. You are a one of a kind. You are stronger than anyone I know ! Thanks for your honesty. Thank you! Yeah I have no problem with bushcraft or anything, I love it. I just have different things to add as someone who does live it. Like when I tried to go from homeless survival to thru-hiking and stealth camping. Would’ve died the first night. A lot of people get excited about maybe trying this stuff, and have no idea what they’d get themselves into.

You're 100% right about needing a tent ... but a product you may not have heard of which is made in England, has solved the condensation and cold problem completely . Buffalo systems. Their sleep system is rated at minus 90 degrees c ... WET OR DRY . when combined with their special 6 shirt and trousers . Aquatherm extreme pile lining and pertex outer shell. Out performs wiggy's on every level . Out performs feathered friends on every level . Best money I ever spent... I've only tested mine down to minus 10 in scotland ,so I wore nothing at all under the special 6 shirt and trousers , I had to unzip the sleeping bags due to being too hot . Buffalo is the best kept secret in the outdoor gear industry ... Merry Christmas.
Man people just don't get it. He is homeless. He doesn't have money to buy what you're talking about. Space is a huge issue. He needs to live light and can't carry stuff around. His stuff gets stolen because he has nowhere safe to keep anything. Wear and tear happens 100x faster when you're homeless. I was homeless for 5 years. You can't fix it without outside help.
Ive been going out in the forest camping for fun for years but this summer it will be fulltime. Yes, this winter condensation has been bad..my sleeping bag etc. Wet in morning. My hand warmers in sleeping bag has been a lifesaver this winter for sure. "I just hate doing this alone, anouther warm body would sure be nice" Atleast we have our guardian angel! The most essential things: 1- a good quality (green color) tent. 2- a good camo tarp. 3- some good cord for the tarp and everything rlse. 4- 2 good lighters. And 6 candles. A candle holder. 5- 2 good flashlights. Small size. Keep one in a safe place in case you lose the other one. At night getting to your camp you'll be glad you have 2 flashlights, not just one. 6- a small trowel for digging and shaping your camp.. 7- industrial contractor black plasticbags for stashing valuables in thick brush nearby where it cant be found. 8- a strong large umbrella. 9- 1 or 2 bottles of drinking water and an empty bottle for in-tent toilet. 10 - if it's winter go to a thrift shop and get 3 cheap sleeping bags and put each inside the other. You will be super warm in any cold. 11- a good foamy or an inflatable. 12- you dont need to cook. Thats a cliche. Just have bread and cheese, fruits etc. and triple bag everything to keep smells in and pests out. 13- you can be absolutely dry and warm in any weather at all. Dont worry, just learn common sense. 14- do excellent top class stealth. Learn as you go. Learn the best foliage for ideal stealth. It's easy once you learn. 15- the forest is full of life so you might feel bursts of anxiety.... It's normal. Relax, breathe and let it pass. The forest is your friend. 16- Hug the trees around you. They will be your friends and help you. 17- learn learn learn , and relax. Enjoy the mornings of sweet birdsong and the breeze through the trees at night. Delicious. Absolutely magic. And even the rain can be relaxing ... 18- rough camping, once you learn it, is like learning about a paradise. One with nature and peaceful. 19- God is good and he put you there so you can learn and grow. Good luck. Oba
Thank you for your wonderful comment. That has been my experience too. Be constantly learning. Leave the modern mindset behind and embrace the greater Life. God will teach you and Nature expresses His thought. Trees are conscious in a different way than us animals -- they experience time more as a continuum, and connecting with them in friendship is very calming and healing. Relax, have courage, and honor the way everything strives for its own existence (the bugs too!) because this brings forth the beauty and vitality of the whole. When I have been deeply into this state of mind, mosquitos did not bite me and I could move through thorns easily. No shit.

When I was thrown out of a house I lived in with a crazed drunk...I was homeless for almost 6 months...not nearly as what you're dealing with but to me that was a lifetime. I used RAID to spray all around where I would live and sleep and it did help with the bugs however you're right about critters, they will find you. I also know what it's like to apply for jobs and you don't hear anything. I'm in hopes things will change for you and you will soon have a good roof over your head. Sending lots of good your way 💙🖤💜
I had romantic thoughts of being a nomadic homeless guy. It got old after a few weeks. I liked the adventures but most my time was looking up food banks and churches and thrift stores that had clothing that was appropriate for the changing weather conditions. Honestly it might be easier today because I didn't have a smart phone to look all this stuff up but yeah man it never stops. I was able to see a good deal of the country and had alot of adventures but Im happy to have my own home now. God bless
One lesson I learned in the cold was take 2, clean, 30+ gallon garbage bags and place you and your sleeping bag in them. Cut a big enough hole in the top of the upper for your head and shoulders. At the time of my lesson, I had a 10 degrees below 0 rated sleeping bag and even when in my car when it was 20 above at night, I was still cold. Having clean, large, garbage bags enveloping my sleeping bag and me made a world of difference.
@QueerdoLoc In terms of a survival situation, a simple large clean garbage bag will block out wind and contain heat while the sleeping bag serves as excellent insulation.
Hi Rob. I definitely understood your concern for not being prepared when it comes to bush or outdoors living. Your bravery is amazing 👏. I've learned that life doesn't comes with the perfect instructions and no two people will follow the same paths. So it doesn't matters where a man plants his feet at nights or what he does during the days...Its what a person stands for and how much is appreciated at the end of the day. We all have to figure out how we are going to keep on living in our own unique situations. Having those situations is what makes us human...not different nor any less deserving... 👍its ok to be human.

I’m out of work myself. Business went bankrupt. I tried for 7 months now. There’s just not enough work and too many ppl applying and I’m now 56 yrs old so I’m competing with younger ppl. My husband is a truck driver so he’s supporting us and keeping a roof over my head. I still need to work as one income is not near enough . We never had kids coz we just can’t afford them. Now days if you’re married u get penalized . Anyway I still want to help you. I wish I could do more, I’d invite u to move in our extra bedroom but our house is unfinished . We have very lil furniture. We just ran out of money. We are what ppl call house poor. My husband made a lot of mistakes trusting the wrong ppl and so have I. It’s not easy. I’ll pray for you brother . Do you have a Bible?

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm packing up to return to the woods this weekend. Did three years before. Hardest thing for me was negative thinking and the threat of being kicked out. Gonna try really hard to stay positive and connected with other people this time. First thing I bought was emergency hand warmers to throw in the foot of my sleeping bag.
In the desert the mice and rats replace the forest bugs... I put my tent in a small cave and put traps around the perimeter and that worked... Also, something that I learned very quickly is that you don't have to make a fire if you don't need one for heat... I used a candle inside the tent and it worked good... But there's really nothing to worry about in the forest because you can hear anything moving as far as people or larger animals... it's like a guarantee if you don't hear anything, there isn't anything....
Yeah luckily I didn’t have mice, snakes, and things like that to deal with. Also, when you’re in the forest and it goes silent, that usually means there’s danger around.
I have a decent tent that's totally sealed qith netting and the bugs still get in. I just got a bug zapper for my tent at Walmart for $15. charges by USB w a light too. No bugs now that weather turned cool so don't know if it works yet. Stay strong bro.
I noticed that they hide in the zipper flaps on the door, and they’ll just drop on you when you go in and out. They’re crafty and want the shelter. Hopefully that works. I made sure to completely shake myself off and anything I had, shake the tent, and double check before opening it.
Not a bad hooch , I was wondering when you were gonna go bushcraft . Some boxed mothballs around camp will fix that problem but they dissolve in the wet so get them often.
Praying for you Rob this could be me very soon. I would much rather live in the woods during the winter as long as I have fire. The heat, bugs and critters during the summer I think I would be much more miserable. I don’t like hot weather. I’m a hunter so I love being in the woods during the fall and winter. Idk if this will work, but if you can get Bay leaves at the Dollar store or supermarket, you can use it to keep the bugs away. I put a few in rice, flour or things like that to extend the shelf life. Maybe a few in between the tent and the blankets may work. Stay safe.

Great tips! I spent 3 years living in my car. Wasn’t nearly as bad because I could move around quicker and leave it running to stay warm during the cold. I’d suggest meditating to kill the time. That’s kind of the go-to suggestion for any unideal situation. It’s the one thing that requires less energy, and can be productive for mental fortitude, which is more important than people think. People often exert even more energy than they can afford to spend stuck in their own minds, worrying about things. If there’s nothing else to do, people can at least learn how to do nothing efficiently. (This is for anyone reading this)
When i was homeless i didn't have a tent. Spent 2 years like that. Summers were not nearly as bad as winters with no shelter. Mostly just tried to find abandoned concrete structures to sleep under. You're right abt the animals though. I remember waking up to a bunch of raccoons sleeping next to me once 😂 atleast it wasn't bears.
Ha I once woke up to a racoon behind me and screamed, then it ran😂😂. Winter is better for me than summers. I've always liked the cold better, although it's better in places where it doesn't rain as much. You can do something about the cold (possibly), but not the heat. And I hate it.

What an incredible sense of hopelessness in being homeless that your comments and tips impart. However, merely surviving is not having a life. On this Christmas Day, how sad this all is. I just watched a UA-cam video about how Finland has solved its homeless problem with their national policy of housing for all along with support to continue to do well in that housing. Their goal is to get the homeless that address of their own, that number on the street that shows they belong somewhere and in our society is what really makes you a "person".

Have you tried making a big fire, putting football sized boulders around it, then when theyre very hot, use 2 forks of branches to pick them up and put them under a raised bed? Soapstone rocks are good for this. You could wrap some smaller smooth ones and put them in the bed too. Should keep you very warm...I hope. You'd need a sort of box construction bed with slats (smooth straight branches) and a space underneath. You could put a closing side on it to retain the heat or lots of pine branches. Just a suggestion. I hope things work out for you.
About to complete my second year living in my truck. First year out of a rest area and now a national forest. Even though I have been working the whole time I somehow only have $4000 to my name even though the only thing I spend my money on besides basic needs are cigarettes and don't even eat well. I don't know how people are getting by.

Just subscribed a bit ago after this hit my algorithm. You reminded me of an old friend which was an Air Force Veteran of the Cold War era when there was a West Germany. Anywho…he was in a similar predicament on and off for about twenty years after discharge due to being an addict. Eventually sobriety reached him after doing a stint in County. This man was a hero of sorts to me for the tidbits of wisdom he’d passed on after learning some things in life. This man was my Uncle Joe. He passed a while back…but never once did I dream I’d face a similar scenario to you and him after becoming a disabled Naval Veteran myself. All I can say is EMPHATICALLY YES…you’ve or we’ve all got to keep our chin up during these trials in life. I think the three of us have done a fine job at that. Hey Rob 👋, I feel your pain and went through the struggles of being homeless myself it was not fun and always a chore figuring out what to do next. I too was an Army Veteran and served 15 years in before I got out. I was an Ranger for 10 of those years of service. When I finally got out I became a police officer and that's was when I got into a serious car wreck after 2 years on the force. The wife I had up and left me, no job, went bankrupt and lived in a hospital for a period of 4 months. I know this is something that I couldn't bare alone so , I turned to God for guidance and never stopped believing that something good would come out of this . I never gave up hope and had faith in something good would come out of this because everything happens for a reason. So, don't despair cause God is there, just stay strong and believe in yourself he will help you. I should of said this earlier and I apologize for not saying this sooner, thank you for your service, Rob. I'll keep you in my prayers and thoughts as you go through this journey, God bless you, brother 🙏 ❤️.
To get off the ground, what about getting some pallets and put bits of insulation foam and then carpet on the top? The Mr Buddy heaters cause condensation for sure. I would say try a small wood heater but that will cause smoke and you don't want to alert anyone to your location. Good on you for persevering. Thank you for the heartfelt advice. We never know what's around the corner and being aware and self reliant can save your life.
I camped for a couple nights in Upstate NY when it was near zero on average. I see you have the heater. That would be critical and I'm thinking you must keep a supply of them. I didn't have one and it required some special gear. Praying for you Rob. You look well.
I lived outdoors for years when i was on the run from the Police in the UK, never used roads only travelled cross country. I eventually got sick and handed myself in, served my time and now i'm back in a nice little House.
Yes i 100% agree with you on the having a good tent. That plus ur bush craft spot is a great idea. The bush craft idea is for camouflage & the tent and sleeping grear for water proofing and comfort.
I know this is an old video and a lot of things have changed but I'm always looking for more tips to stay warmer in the winter. I have a car with a great heater but I never know when I'm one small disaster away from losing a job and having my car repossessed. I got a place to rent but it had black mold so I ended up with a bad infection that kept me out of working both my jobs for about 4 days. I decided to break my lease because I couldn't walk into the place without getting a migraine, so I'm back to square one with only one income now and trying to make car payments, rent and utilities with one income is pretty much impossible. Plus, I worked from 8 am to 11 pm for so many days straight that paying so much a month for a place to sleep and shower just felt stupid. I was exhausted mentally and physically just trying to have a normal life with a home that I never had time to spend in. In all honesty I'm not cut out to be apart of civilization and the rat race that makes people believe their living the American dream. I'm an introvert so interacting with customers at work and barely speaking to my coworkers was the only social life I had. I just don't fit in with people because I love my privacy and I don't entertain gossip and drama,so I just focus on work and then dip out as soon I clock off lol. I try to keep all my stuff in the trunk so nosey coworkers won't know I'm homeless but there's always random things laying in the seats and floorboards to make them question my way of life. Why do you need a lantern? What's the blowtorch for? What do you do with that machete? Lmao It can be a little embarrassing but I love the peace I get in nature and it only cost $6 to swim in a heated indoor swimming pool at a resort and it has a gym and showers, so it's not like I'm nasty and I have nothing to do but freeze. I sleep in my tent in the summer and swim and bathe in the river after work, go to old historical towns to eat and have coffee at the outdoor cafes, do a lot of sight seeing and photography on my days off. People idealize getting away from society but they don't know what it takes to deal with the changes of weather, leaks, a roof caving in, high winds blowing your last meal into the fire and the fact that through most of the very real struggles and dangers your completely alone. I know better than to talk to people about my situation because they're always full of advice about things they've never experienced and I've already faced those things head on more than a dozen times. I always think it's hilarious when people don't believe a homeless person could have a phone or access to the internet in this day and age and their genius advice is telling a homeless person with two job is, " get A job"! Bahaha Not only do most of us have more than one job, we start working as soon as we wake up and then once we clock out, we're cutting firewood, fixing our shelter and going through the long process of getting ready for bed just to do it all over again the next day. Just get a large tent then set up a smaller tent inside the big tent and of course blankets on top tarps whatever for additional insulation. It’s surprisingly warm
@@raymondkidwell7135 thank you! I had that setup before and the wind bent my poles and eventually destroyed my large tent. I had a hard time setting it up by myself and am even harder time doing damage control but it did stay much warmer while it lasted. I've been thinking about digging an underground bunker so I can stay hidden and storms won't destroy my sanctuary.
All due respect to you Rob. To anyone else reading this, i'd just like to add that in a tent, it's important to block the wind on the outside from flinging condensation from the interior walls onto your gear, bedding and self. In 100% humidity areas it's unavoidable and you must constantly fight it. Ventilation will not stop all of it. You need a wind wall all around your tent. Heck, i'd just avoid 100% humidity areas and high presipitation if you can. Good luck all you displaced and daring. You're never alone. Keep your spirits up. Adapt and overcome. Our anscestors did it and so can we.

And your honesty about things, is so very welcome, because in todays world, honesty and just being truthfull, about anything, is getting to be a rare thing, and wen people see honesty and truthfullness in someone, like people do with you, then they like that 'rare thing', that is a person just being straight up and down 'honest', with them. Although the world does seem to be, on the whole, a fake and foney, place, that is full of fake and foney people, that are happy to be 'fed lies', there are still some if us 'real' people, that won't tolerate lies, and wen we see honesty, we naturally know wot we're seeing and we like it, because it's honest and real, just like you are, and i am, and so will the majority if your subscribers. A portable log burning stove is a godsend. They can be fitted into a tent. They produce a dry heat unlike gas which is a damp heat. But it may be difficult to carry around if you dont have a vehicle.
I was forced into homelessness. But after a bit, when I started to get used to it and got the stuff to make it easier and built a cabin to get out of the tent. I'm happy. I dont have to go to a place I hate, to work my life away to make some asshole rich, live paycheck to paycheck, barely get by. I wake up every day and every one is all mine. I do what I want to do when I want to. I sleep when I'm tired. I just always think we have lived this way for 200000 years! We weren't meant to live the way we do now. No wonder why we have so many mental health issues now. Plus there is about 7 other people that live in this little group. We help each other. We keep bad eggs away. It's again like how we are supposed to live. So thank you society for pushing me to the streets so I could expireance the way we should live!
big issue with tents and tarps is holes etc from sun damage which happens quick if you got the tent out all day for 6months. my idea is to either build a debri shelter or make an oilskin tarp to protect it. the wet is such an issue, cotton dries so slow but workwear/hiking clothes with synthetic materials like nylon dry really fast, some barely absorb moisture in the first place. the stuff about the bugs so true such a big thing
Hope that things go better for you. Bushcrafters make it look so much fun. My only real experience of such a situation was 50 years ago and I spent 10 days hitchhiking London to Barcelona in mid December. Slept in ditches, under hedges and almost froze to death.
As a citizen of the country you took an oath to defend, it frustrates me to see any homeless veteran. I pray you find employment, stability and fulfillment in this life.

This popping up in my recommendations as I am struggling financially and fearing a layoff at my job... seems like a bad omen. We are all a bad day away from losing everything and being on the streets.
God have mercy on everyone in this situation, I pray for the safety, comfort, warmth, and opportunity for all the homeless souls out there. Thank the Lord for a roof over my head and food. I think it's about time that I go drop some food and supplies off at my local shelter again.

When I was homeless I just kept reminding myself how mankind has lived for hundreds of years without electricity! I made a yurt by glueing tarps together for the sides. Then glued a couple of tarps over the top. I used denatured alcohol stove to cook with( it doesn't smoke) I collected rain water off the roof into 25 gallon totes, then put the lid on them after the rain. A dear friend loaned me a Little buddy heater& propane tank. It was a life saver! Even though my yurt was 144 sq ft, it only used 2 pounds/1/2 gallon/$1.87 of propane a day. That was if I only used at night, on low.
Having friends that can get you thru the hard times and good neighbors is very critical!

I'm not sure what winter is going to cost running inverter and a heat pad is how I deal with the colder night. Need heat this is your most efficient e way . I could go with a propane heater but it's South Louisiana we rarely freeze. See a hybrid gets its heat from the internal combustion engine that presents a problem when it comes to efficiency because you are using the gas to get the engine to get hot and I have used an inverter and an electric heating pad then there's the 12 volt things that you can use that would be more efficient a 12 volt electric blanket. Because in a hybrid every kilowatt-hour you are going to generate is going to be with your engine.

Observation: in a recent video about isolation in Antarctica, studies show that the hypocampus part of the brain shrinks over time, leading to memory loss and a reduction in the ability to learn and loss of motivation in general. A companion animal can reduce and even reverse this.
That's why it was important to lock us down and isolate us during the pandemic. Trauma based mind control on a mass scale. Isn't science great?
That brings on another financial responsibility, and if taking care of yourself is a burden then a animal just slows you down even more. If you learn to judge caricature and meet good people on the street you have that companionship.You don't have to be with them 24/7 and they don't have to know where you sleep!

@@georgemartyn5268If the poster means that they submit online applications and resumes, but never hear back….that is not uncommon. Many job openings are posted online without intending to hire, for a variety of reasons (to have back-up candidates, to placate overworked co-workers that more staff is coming (but isn’t), etc.). Many online applications don’t ever reach a person, as the easy process leads people to overaply, and they get flooded with unqualified applicants.
But you can try to get around this. If you think you think you make a decent impression, better to briefly as If you can drop off a CV to a manager in person, saying briefly would love to work there if they have an opening, even if short term, and a couple reasons you area good fit. Or find a public, company email address of a boss or hiring manager, and send a brief email that you think your skills would match their needs and your other advantages.
I have gotten jobs doing this that I am certain I would not have gotten if I had just applied online and waited. One where I had actually BEEN hired and working there for several months, due to emailing a manager, then I received a rejection for my online application for a similar position.

I was homeless for many years. Here’s another tip that works. I had my tent destroyed by mice. They chewed their way in. When I got another tent I thought of a way so that would not happen again. Take hot peppers chop them up fine. Sprinkle them all around your tent. I never saw another mouse. It’s works!! (You will need to do this at least once a week)

I use a larger tent and use an
off the ground camping bed with ceramic tea light holders that I use 8 or 10 hour tea lights in, the ones that people put oil on the dish. I have 6 ceramic holders and the colder it is the more I use. Keep the tent well ventilated, there should be no need to fully close the door. Stay warm and dry all night. Bless you.

This country is not ideal, but considering "what's out there on the market" it's one of the best countries to live in and only a handful you could call better, and not by a large margin.

@@tomekkruk6147 you have to remember years ago things were not that black and white. Imagine being abused as a child and then thrown out onto the streets at the age of 16. Central London was pretty much dog eat dog. You can't get a job without a permanent address so as much as you say you have to either be spending on drink or drugs is pretty much speculation on your part. Especially if you have not been in that situation. There are plenty of reasons as to why people end up on the streets and not just because of drugs or alcohol.

Great info Rob! I spent a few years homeless. It was usually 6 months at a time. The nights that got down to the low 30s were always hard. I had a cheap tent, a 20 degree sleeping bag, an air mattress with two blankets on it. It was the first time I ever slept with a winter hat on in a hoodie with the hood cinched up. My final stretch I boondocked in my van with my dog. We eventually moved into a storage unit then got lucky and got to house sit for a while. Warmer days are ahead brother!
Your van is the best way to live homeless as long as you can keep it running and registered. It will always be a roof over your head that will keep you dry, it can be insulated with corrugated cardboard which can be found for free just about anywhere.
Every city has some kind of day labor agency that will provide enough money to keep you alive if you're willing to work and living rent free.
I lived and traveled in my van with my disabled son for three years and we never paid to stay anywhere, it can be done. I am retired and so we both have guaranteed incomes. Be migratory, follow the good weather, stay safe and may God bless.

I was only homeless for a couple years but it was enough of a wake up call to sober me up after about 30 years of alcohol and drug addiction. With the help of Jesus Christ, I've been sober and no homeless forover 3 years. God bless 🙏 ☦️

Nobody helped you, nobody could help you, Yes they might have encouraged you, they might have supported you to some degree, BUT it was you who did it, so claim the credit don't give it away. You have proved to yourself that you are strong, you have proved to yourself that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Believe in God if that's a help to you, but know this, if you didn't believe in God you still would have got clean because YOU are strong and you can do anything!

I've been homeless, van dweller, since 2005. I was a licensed electrician, teaching in college, when the bottom fell out of my life.
I've actually grown to like this lifestyle. I know that might sound odd to some people, but it is the truth.
However, the first year or so was a living hell as I tried to get used to living this way. I felt ashamed of myself for being homeless and wouldn't tell anyone.
Recently, I had to move back east because the engine died in my old van. I plugged into a family member's porch outlet for electricity while I worked and saved for another vehicle. I love my family but I couldn't get away from that place fast enough!!
I'm back out west now and happier than ever!!
Heck, from what I can tell, even Jesus Christ was homeless!
This lifestyle is definitely not for everyone.
As with everything else in life, it's a trade off.
If I don't like my surroundings, I'm free to leave them and find something better.
My scenic views are always changing.
I've seen more in a few years than many will see in their lifetime.
Those are a few of the good points.
This morning, I was answering the call of nature in the 20 degree, blowing snow out here in the Arizona desert.
I'm lonely most of the time. (Although it's easy to do small talk with people, you seldom develop deep relationships).
I'm sitting here typing this, praying that my social security check will make it to the bank, before the monthly bills do.
I could easily find work where I am currently, but because of some physical issues that I have now, I'm not able to do the work that I did during my working years.
I guess my point is that Homelessness, at least in the US, is generally looked upon as some sort of contagious plague.
For whatever reason a person might find themselves in this situation, please remember that, that is a fellow human being, just as worthy of love as anyone else.

I've got a friend who is homeless (by his own choice), But many of the things you said apply to his situation. One of the most eye opening things is the TIME it takes to be homeless! Takes forever to get places on public transportation. Hard to take your clothes to the laundromat on the bus. But if you try to hand wash and hang dry it can take up most of the day. But taking showers, getting food, using the bathroom. I mean, he hardly has time to do anything else but the basics.
I know huh? And people wonder why it's so hard for the majority of them to find work or hold down a job.
Homelessness really can be a full-time job.
I was living out of my car for just short of two years. You're exactly right -- the time you have to invest to go from place to place to get the basics done is astounding. Not to mention going between viable sleeping spots.
@@Ezeudu Yes, that's another thing! My friend has a wide range of parking lots where he sleep! From all-night laundromats to large hospitals and Walmart (in the old days). But you're eright, scheduling your sleep spots is another time suck.

I also knew people who where squatters (abandoned building, they've lived there for over 20 years!) unfortunately that building has been demolished last year. A friend of mine, has to deal with homeless people sometimes too because of his work. There is one man who always has the same spot and it is cold AF, and i always wondered, why doesn't he just squat a building? My friend asked him, and he said he doesn't want to break into someone elses property.
Well if you ask me, if it is an empty building, owned by either a large corporation OR the government, you bet your ass i'm taking that oppurtunity if i where homeless.

I almost got a cot several times. The only thing with that is the cold. It’s hard to get and stay warm when there’s cold air underneath you. I had blankets under me for comfort and warmth.
I could never go back to living this way. It’s absolutely hell. My heart goes out to you. Our society we live in is so screwed up.

Thank you for some good advice. These days, a great many people are just one paycheck away, from homelessness. I myself have been homeless several times in my life. Summer is fine for here in Canada, but our winters are brutal. As I get older, half a year till 55, and being a woman in menopause, the winters scare me the most. I too sought to remain homeless once I found out that it was the only way that I as an individual could feel true freedom at that time in my young life. Many tried in vain to bring me back as they put it but it was to no avail as I had my taste and I refused to let it go.
The many reasons for my feeling this way at that time are many, deep enough to have left scars internally, mentally as well as outside for everyone to judge me by on first impressions. Plural. We could sit over hot coffee and I could text you stories that would be truly unbelievable as well as leaving you in total wonder as to how I am still alive to this day...yeah, it'd keep you up for hours too. Not all of my life was terrible but it drove me to this conclusion, if I may be brutally honest with you here, and please by no means take these words as being directed directly at you, or anyone now involved in my life...here goes.

ie. I had to make lemonade with those yellow sour fruits if ya' dig what I'm saying. Yeah, trial and error got me only so far. It was advise from those whom walked my path and had returned, that gave me wisdom that I had to absorb and retain for my own benefit, and I in turn, re passed that knowledge to those asking the right question. I shared what I'd not only heard, but tried and used in successfully concurrent events throughout my days and travels.
These days, we have the internet, and I figured out another way of sharing what I know works, via gathering these videos and sharing them with those asking the right questions.
I'm 57, I'm an R-BTK Amputee who had an aneurism on my Aorta, bled out internally and actually died and was brought back, placed into a clinical coma for 7 days, 3 of which I was removed from cold storage and had sections of dead intestine, colon, stomach etcetera removed and patched back together, then brought out of the coma and was told I had 6 months to a year to live minimum, maybe 5 if I were lucky.
It's been almost 7 years now since I told that first Doctor that He wasn't going to tell ME that how long I was going to live, and to hand me my prosthetic leg, then to go phuk himself and stay tf out of my room, and my life. Yeah, I told him not to even cross my path or I'd beat him senseless.
Dr. Beth Jackson out of Holston Valley Hospital saved my life...not his stupid @$$, and I was set once again on a path in life, yet again in another direction.
I got divorced because she was holding me back, holding me down, and I'm not taking it from her either. I gave her the house and car, I'm taking my 4 Pit Bulls, my friend Brian, and we're moving to the Mountains of S.W. Virginia to continue building Shelters and Dugouts for the Homeless who choose to travel via Railway's, and in #OffGrid situations for long term area residential stays for those in the need and this is why I posted the link.

That was some good advice. Been in my tent for 2 years now myself and it's not easy. I try to spend most my days away from my camp on my mountain bike so I keep occupied. work has been tough myself. Nice thing is springs around the corner and that's when I enjoy the woods the most. Spring and fall. I don't consider myself homeless I only consider myself houseless. We all appreciate your honesty. This really makes one realize what you are going through. I have never been homeless but camped in some very rough conditions so I understood some of what you are going through. But then again, I went home when all my cloths were muddy, my food supply ran low or that creepy noise going around my tent at night had me running for the car. He's a personal God who isn't constrained by holding existence together.
The most essential things:
1- a good quality (green color) tent.
2- a good camo tarp.
3- some good cord for the tarp and everything rlse.
4- 2 good lighters. And 6 candles. A candle holder.
5- 2 good flashlights. Small size. Keep one in a safe place in case you lose the other one. At night getting to your camp you'll be glad you have 2 flashlights, not just one.
6- a small trowel for digging and shaping your camp..
7- industrial contractor black plasticbags for stashing valuables in thick brush nearby where it cant be found.
8- a strong large umbrella.
9- 1 or 2 bottles of drinking water and an empty bottle for in-tent toilet.
10 - if it's winter go to a thrift shop and get 3 cheap sleeping bags and put each inside the other. You will be super warm in any cold.
11- a good foamy or an inflatable.
12- you dont need to cook. Thats a cliche. Just have bread and cheese, fruits etc. and triple bag everything to keep smells in and pests out.
13- you can be absolutely dry and warm in any weather at all. Dont worry, just learn common sense.
14- do excellent top class stealth. Learn as you go. Learn the best foliage for ideal stealth. It's easy once you learn.
15- the forest is full of life so you might feel bursts of anxiety.... It's normal. Relax, breathe and let it pass. The forest is your friend.
16- Hug the trees around you. They will be your friends and help you.
17- learn learn learn , and relax. Enjoy the mornings of sweet birdsong and the breeze through the trees at night. Delicious. Absolutely magic. And even the rain can be relaxing ...
18- rough camping, once you learn it, is like learning about a paradise. One with nature and peaceful.
19- God is good and he put you there so you can learn and grow.

God will teach you and Nature expresses His thought. Trees are conscious in a different way than us animals -- they experience time more as a continuum, and connecting with them in friendship is very calming and healing. Relax, have courage, and honor the way everything strives for its own existence (the bugs too!) because this brings forth the beauty and vitality of the whole. When I have been deeply into this state of mind, mosquitos did not bite me and I could move through thorns easily. No shit.

When I was thrown out of a house I lived in with a crazed drunk...I was homeless for almost 6 months...not nearly as what you're dealing with but to me that was a lifetime.
I used RAID to spray all around where I would live and sleep and it did help with the bugs however you're right about critters, they will find you. I also know what it's like to apply for jobs and you don't hear anything. I'm in hopes things will change for you and you will soon have a good roof over your head. Sending lots of good your way 💙🖤💜
I had romantic thoughts of being a nomadic homeless guy. It got old after a few weeks. I liked the adventures but most my time was looking up food banks and churches and thrift stores that had clothing that was appropriate for the changing weather conditions. Honestly it might be easier today because I didn't have a smart phone to look all this stuff up but yeah man it never stops. I was able to see a good deal of the country and had alot of adventures but Im happy to have my own home now. God bless

One lesson I learned in the cold was take 2, clean, 30+ gallon garbage bags and place you and your sleeping bag in them. Cut a big enough hole in the top of the upper for your head and shoulders. At the time of my lesson, I had a 10 degrees below 0 rated sleeping bag and even when in my car when it was 20 above at night, I was still cold. Having clean, large, garbage bags enveloping my sleeping bag and me made a world of difference.
@QueerdoLoc In terms of a survival situation, a simple large clean garbage bag will block out wind and contain heat while the sleeping bag serves as excellent insulation.

I've learned that life doesn't comes with the perfect instructions and no two people will follow the same paths. So it doesn't matters where a man plants his feet at nights or what he does during the days...Its what a person stands for and how much is appreciated at the end of the day. We all have to figure out how we are going to keep on living in our own unique situations. I’m out of work myself. Business went bankrupt. I tried for 7 months now. There’s just not enough work and too many ppl applying and I’m now 56 yrs old so I’m competing with younger ppl. My husband is a truck driver so he’s supporting us and keeping a roof over my head. I still need to work as one income is not near enough . We never had kids coz we just can’t afford them. Now days if you’re married u get penalized . Anyway I still want to help you. I wish I could do more, I’d invite u to move in our extra bedroom but our house is unfinished . We have very lil furniture. We just ran out of money. We are what ppl call house poor. My husband made a lot of mistakes trusting the wrong ppl and so have I. It’s not easy. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm packing up to return to the woods this weekend. Did three years before. Hardest thing for me was negative thinking and the threat of being kicked out. Gonna try really hard to stay positive and connected with other people this time. First thing I bought was emergency hand warmers to throw in the foot of my sleeping bag.
In the desert the mice and rats replace the forest bugs... I put my tent in a small cave and put traps around the perimeter and that worked... Also, something that I learned very quickly is that you don't have to make a fire if you don't need one for heat... I used a candle inside the tent and it worked good... But there's really nothing to worry about in the forest because you can hear anything moving as far as people or larger animals... it's like a guarantee if you don't hear anything, there isn't anything....
Yeah luckily I didn’t have mice, snakes, and things like that to deal with.
Also, when you’re in the forest and it goes silent, that usually means there’s danger around.
Bags of leaves on the outside work with a tarp , smoke and soap water in a spray bottle help with bugs , nice shelter
I have a decent tent that's totally sealed qith netting and the bugs still get in. I just got a bug zapper for my tent at Walmart for $15. charges by USB w a light too. No bugs now that weather turned cool so don't know if it works yet. Stay strong bro.
I noticed that they hide in the zipper flaps on the door, and they’ll just drop on you when you go in and out. They’re crafty and want the shelter. Hopefully that works.
I made sure to completely shake myself off and anything I had, shake the tent, and double check before opening it.
Not a bad hooch , I was wondering when you were gonna go bushcraft . Some boxed mothballs around camp will fix that problem but they dissolve in the wet so get them often.

Idk if this will work, but if you can get Bay leaves at the Dollar store or supermarket, you can use it to keep the bugs away. I put a few in rice, flour or things like that to extend the shelf life. Maybe a few in between the tent and the blankets may work. Stay safe.

Don't rely of cotton either, lots of wool and animal furs !
And polypropylene fiber filled coats and comforters. It is excellent insulation, washable and lightweight.
I just get rid of cotton for the most part if I see it. Wool and polypropylene is what I use. I actually lean more towards poly.

Great tips! I spent 3 years living in my car. Wasn’t nearly as bad because I could move around quicker and leave it running to stay warm during the cold. I’d suggest meditating to kill the time. That’s kind of the go-to suggestion for any unideal situation. It’s the one thing that requires less energy, and can be productive for mental fortitude, which is more important than people think. People often exert even more energy than they can afford to spend stuck in their own minds, worrying about things. If there’s nothing else to do, people can at least learn how to do nothing efficiently. (This is for anyone reading this)

When i was homeless i didn't have a tent. Spent 2 years like that. Summers were not nearly as bad as winters with no shelter. Mostly just tried to find abandoned concrete structures to sleep under. You're right abt the animals though. I remember waking up to a bunch of raccoons sleeping next to me once 😂 atleast it wasn't bears.

Ha I once woke up to a racoon behind me and screamed, then it ran😂😂. Winter is better for me than summers. I've always liked the cold better, although it's better in places where it doesn't rain as much. You can do something about the cold (possibly), but not the heat. And I hate it.

What an incredible sense of hopelessness in being homeless that your comments and tips impart. However, merely surviving is not having a life. On this Christmas Day, how sad this all is. I just watched a UA-cam video about how Finland has solved its homeless problem with their national policy of housing for all along with support to continue to do well in that housing. Their goal is to get the homeless that address of their own, that number on the street that shows they belong somewhere and in our society is what really makes you a "person".

Have you tried making a big fire, putting football sized boulders around it, then when theyre very hot, use 2 forks of branches to pick them up and put them under a raised bed? Soapstone rocks are good for this. You could wrap some smaller smooth ones and put them in the bed too. Should keep you very warm...I hope. You'd need a sort of box construction bed with slats (smooth straight branches) and a space underneath. You could put a closing side on it to retain the heat or lots of pine branches. Just a suggestion. I hope things work out for you.

About to complete my second year living in my truck. First year out of a rest area and now a national forest. Even though I have been working the whole time I somehow only have $4000 to my name even though the only thing I spend my money on besides basic needs are cigarettes and don't even eat well. I don't know how people are getting by.
Rob look into making a Dakota fire hole. Burns hot! Smokeless pretty much. Cooking and heating. Another option rocket stove made from mud. You can make a tent stove from a 5ga metal bucket.

Just subscribed a bit ago after this hit my algorithm. You reminded me of an old friend which was an Air Force Veteran of the Cold War era when there was a West Germany.
Anywho…he was in a similar predicament on and off for about twenty years after discharge due to being an addict.
Eventually sobriety reached him after doing a stint in County. This man was a hero of sorts to me for the tidbits of wisdom he’d passed on after learning some things in life. This man was my Uncle Joe.
He passed a while back…but never once did I dream I’d face a similar scenario to you and him after becoming a disabled Naval Veteran myself.
All I can say is EMPHATICALLY YES…you’ve or we’ve all got to keep our chin up during these trials in life. I think the three of us have done a fine job at that.
I’ll attempt to catch up to your latest video but once more just keep going man…you’ve gotta lotta good folks out here genuinely cheering you on Brother.

Hey Rob 👋, I feel your pain and went through the struggles of being homeless myself it was not fun and always a chore figuring out what to do next. I too was an Army Veteran and served 15 years in before I got out. I was an Ranger for 10 of those years of service. When I finally got out I became a police officer and that's was when I got into a serious car wreck after 2 years on the force. The wife I had up and left me, no job, went bankrupt and lived in a hospital for a period of 4 months. I know this is something that I couldn't bare alone so , I turned to God for guidance and never stopped believing that something good would come out of this . I never gave up hope and had faith in something good would come out of this because everything happens for a reason. So, don't despair cause God is there, just stay strong and believe in yourself he will help you.
I should of said this earlier and I apologize for not saying this sooner, thank you for your service, Rob.

The Mr Buddy heaters cause condensation for sure. I would say try a small wood heater but that will cause smoke and you don't want to alert anyone to your location. Good on you for persevering. Thank you for the heartfelt advice. We never know what's around the corner and being aware and self reliant can save your life.
I camped for a couple nights in Upstate NY when it was near zero on average. I see you have the heater. That would be critical and I'm thinking you must keep a supply of them. I didn't have one and it required some special gear. Praying for you Rob. You look well.
I lived outdoors for years when i was on the run from the Police in the UK, never used roads only travelled cross country. I eventually got sick and handed myself in, served my time and now i'm back in a nice little House.

Yes i 100% agree with you on the having a good tent. That plus ur bush craft spot is a great idea. The bush craft idea is for camouflage & the tent and sleeping grear for water proofing and comfort.
I know this is an old video and a lot of things have changed but I'm always looking for more tips to stay warmer in the winter. I have a car with a great heater but I never know when I'm one small disaster away from losing a job and having my car repossessed.
I got a place to rent but it had black mold so I ended up with a bad infection that kept me out of working both my jobs for about 4 days. I decided to break my lease because I couldn't walk into the place without getting a migraine, so I'm back to square one with only one income now and trying to make car payments, rent and utilities with one income is pretty much impossible. Plus, I worked from 8 am to 11 pm for so many days straight that paying so much a month for a place to sleep and shower just felt stupid. I was exhausted mentally and physically just trying to have a normal life with a home that I never had time to spend in.
In all honesty I'm not cut out to be apart of civilization and the rat race that makes people believe their living the American dream. I'm an introvert so interacting with customers at work and barely speaking to my coworkers was the only social life I had. I just don't fit in with people because I love my privacy and I don't entertain gossip and drama,so I just focus on work and then dip out as soon I clock off lol.
I try to keep all my stuff in the trunk so nosey coworkers won't know I'm homeless but there's always random things laying in the seats and floorboards to make them question my way of life.

It can be a little embarrassing but I love the peace I get in nature and it only cost $6 to swim in a heated indoor swimming pool at a resort and it has a gym and showers, so it's not like I'm nasty and I have nothing to do but freeze.
I sleep in my tent in the summer and swim and bathe in the river after work, go to old historical towns to eat and have coffee at the outdoor cafes, do a lot of sight seeing and photography on my days off.
People idealize getting away from society but they don't know what it takes to deal with the changes of weather, leaks, a roof caving in, high winds blowing your last meal into the fire and the fact that through most of the very real struggles and dangers your completely alone. I know better than to talk to people about my situation because they're always full of advice about things they've never experienced and I've already faced those things head on more than a dozen times.
I always think it's hilarious when people don't believe a homeless person could have a phone or access to the internet in this day and age and their genius advice is telling a homeless person with two job is, " get A job"! Bahaha
Not only do most of us have more than one job, we start working as soon as we wake up and then once we clock out, we're cutting firewood, fixing our shelter and going through the long process of getting ready for bed just to do it all over again the next day.

Just get a large tent then set up a smaller tent inside the big tent and of course blankets on top tarps whatever for additional insulation. It’s surprisingly warm
@@raymondkidwell7135 thank you! I had that setup before and the wind bent my poles and eventually destroyed my large tent. I had a hard time setting it up by myself and am even harder time doing damage control but it did stay much warmer while it lasted.
I've been thinking about digging an underground bunker so I can stay hidden and storms won't destroy my sanctuary.
All due respect to you Rob. To anyone else reading this, i'd just like to add that in a tent, it's important to block the wind on the outside from flinging condensation from the interior walls onto your gear, bedding and self. In 100% humidity areas it's unavoidable and you must constantly fight it. Ventilation will not stop all of it. You need a wind wall all around your tent. Heck, i'd just avoid 100% humidity areas and high presipitation if you can.

Nice one Rob. It's good to see you're all ok mate. (I was going to write, "It's good to see you're still alive and well", but that just sounded wrong, for some reason.) Anyway, i think your 'resilience', is second to none, and you give a whole new level to the meaning of 'endurance'. And your honesty about things, is so very welcome, because in todays world, honesty and just being truthfull, about anything, is getting to be a rare thing, and wen people see honesty and truthfullness in someone, like people do with you, then they like that 'rare thing', that is a person just being straight up and down 'honest', with them. Yeah in my opinion, real, proper, people, will gravitate towards 'real proper people', like yourself. Although the world does seem to be, on the whole, a fake and foney, place, that is full of fake and foney people, that are happy to be 'fed lies', there are still some if us 'real' people, that won't tolerate lies, and wen we see honesty, we naturally know wot we're seeing and we like it, because it's honest and real, just like you are, and i am, and so will the majority if your subscribers. Anyway mate, i will leave it there otherwise I'll be here commenting and ranting like a 'crazy person', all day. Lol. (By the way i use the term 'crazy person', in the most respectfull way, because i have been labelled as 'crazy', many times, and it's a 'badge' that i wear with pride ! A portable log burning stove is a godsend. They can be fitted into a tent. They produce a dry heat unlike gas which is a damp heat. But it may be difficult to carry around if you dont have a vehicle.
I was forced into homelessness. But after a bit, when I started to get used to it and got the stuff to make it easier and built a cabin to get out of the tent. I'm happy. I dont have to go to a place I hate, to work my life away to make some asshole rich, live paycheck to paycheck, barely get by. I wake up every day and every one is all mine. I do what I want to do when I want to. I sleep when I'm tired. I just always think we have lived this way for 200000 years! We weren't meant to live the way we do now. No wonder why we have so many mental health issues now. Plus there is about 7 other people that live in this little group. We help each other. We keep bad eggs away. It's again like how we are supposed to live. So thank you society for pushing me to the streets so I could expireance the way we should live!

big issue with tents and tarps is holes etc from sun damage which happens quick if you got the tent out all day for 6months. my idea is to either build a debri shelter or make an oilskin tarp to protect it.
the wet is such an issue, cotton dries so slow but workwear/hiking clothes with synthetic materials like nylon dry really fast, some barely absorb moisture in the first place.

Hope that things go better for you. Bushcrafters make it look so much fun. My only real experience of such a situation was 50 years ago and I spent 10 days hitchhiking London to Barcelona in mid December. Slept in ditches, under hedges and almost froze to death.
