The best thing about The Orville is it feels less like a deconstruction of sci-fi tropes and more like a celebration of them, especially when it comes to the crew dynamics. The relationships between them feel genuine; they argue, they fight, they apologize and get stronger as a result. In a world where grimdark=realism, it's nice to see something that embraces the silver age style of storytelling.
Because in every Star Trek, the crews and captains are all elite, the best of the best. However, in Orville, the captain and the crews are bunch of mishap with theirs own problems, similar to normal workplace. The only reason they get to pilot the ship because there are too many ships and not enough captain and crews to pilot them.
So in a sense, they are similar to people in normal work place, argue, party, fight and then all kinds of problems and funny situations. Like the Office show, but on space ship dealing with planetary situations.

@@unintentionallydramatic Marxists have a lot to answer for. A lot of this is literally the result of a KGB plot going back to the 1960s to undermine and demoralize American culture. Look up Yuri Bezmenov on youtube. He's a KGB defector who lays it all out.

@@excellingdeicide2967 Nonsense. Discovery is terrible in all of its Seasons.
I like the Orville. It feels to me, at least, like what SI-FI should be, a little bit of camp, a little comedy, a little action and a good dash of drama. Everything feels very well balanced in this show, though some times some of the jokes seem a little rushed and shoe horned in, but I think that's because Seth is doing that for his Family Guy fans, and that's cool. The whole cast I think is spot on.
Jason Woodruff gotta love the full set lighting of the series
The joke about the beagle licking itself in the back ground was hilarious.
Reminds me of the best years of SG-1 and the entirety of SG-A :D
I mean, aside from the occasionally really inappropriate toilet humour, it could do with less of that and take itself a little bit more seriously if it's to be seen as something more than just a parody show.
You just helped me define my problem with The Orville: it's a late 80s/early 90s Star Trek, but with mostly lame and tacky humor thrown in. It's as if someone tried to make a Galaxy Quest TV show, but decided he wanted to be ST:TNG instead, and ended up being far worse than both.
that "My Heart Will go on" scene is still freakin hilarious
Joppel Fernandez, YOU WILL BE SILENT!
Sorry, someone had to say it.
I have a discussion topic for you: The Orville is, in reality, NOT like Star Trek...in one very key, very important way.
Every Star Trek series involves an ensemble crew of elite, highly trained beings, the best of the best. TOS, TNG and ENT were about the flagship, with literally the best in the Federation. DS9 involved several of the best from different cultures and societies. Voyager was about a near-prototype Hero Ship lead by a captain that made Admiral at the show's end and handed the Borg their ass too many times to count.
The Orville...is not the best ship in the fleet. Nor is it unique. It is an "Explorer-A" class vessel, which according to their wikia is one of the most common. The crew, while very unique and skilled, are nowhere near the best nor the elite. The captain is a near washout, the pilot is an idiot in anything not about flying, the third officer is anti-social to the extreme, there is a racist robot, a nervous teen security chief, a lieutenant terrified of succeeding...the list goes on.
Star Trek is about the best of the best doing what is expected of the best. The Orville is about the blue-collar, common officers of their universe just trying to do their best...and somehow they do just fine.
The newest trek animation will not be the best of the best..in fact itll be the most inconsequential ship
While plenty of the crew in those shows are the best of the best, I don't know if I'd say everyone was the best or in every show. T'pol from ENT just happened to be a nearby Vulcan interested in science. Yeah she was great but I don't know if the Vulcan Science Council would put their best officer on the "doomed" human ship. Also there was Voyager and while Tom Paris might be the single most skilled person in all of Starfleet, I'd hardly say their crew was the best of the best. In addition the Borg of Voyager are scrubs by comparison to the nigh-unstoppable Borg of TNG.
The Orville might not be in an extra ordinary circumstances but it still has potential to take on a Hero Ship sort of role and for all the completely true things you stated about the crew, they also are very capable. The pilot may totally hopeless outside of piloting but he might be the best pilot in the fleet, The racist robot has superior ability to accomplish tasks of any person on the ship or any of their associated races, the security chief's race of super strong people rarely take on commissions so she ends up being a unique and powerful asset. Commander Bortis could be pretty awesome but honestly, is overshadowed frequently by the other excellent crew members. I guess he is radiation resistant and tough?
Point proven though, this could be a really good discussion topic!
While the best of everything does seem to be a running theme throughout Star Trek. I've never agreed with that choice though I see why they did it. It's more of a creative choice. I like this better and wish Star Trek had done more of it. Would have fleshed out the universe and made it feel more lived in. It wouldn't make sense to send the fleet's flagship to every major incident.
We also have to remember that Star Trek is about growing and learning. I always felt that the Captain Harriman of the Enterprise B would have made a great redemption story. He get's put in charge of a lesser ship for his failure. Then rebounds and makes a difference. The best aren't always that way when we first meet them. Sometimes the story is about how they are forged into the best.
@@LoreReloadedYou mean....they'll do an Oberth :o
I feel bad if that's the case, because that crew are basically red-shirts on a paper airplane. There's no real shields, no real weapons, explodium hulls, crappy warp so can't escape, and barely any sensors to make it work as a science ship.
Get back to me when Barclay is anything close to a best of the best human. ;)
It makes sense he's freaked out when a normal dude gets assigned to work with legendary heroes with plot armor like TNG.
I've been wanting to watch this show, just haven't had the chance to.
YOU WILL BE SILENT!
Me: Okay, now I have to watch this.
You really should, there are some GREAT episodes in Season 1 (Season 2 just started) that make some very interesting social commentary - like TOS/TNG did back in the day. Some of the jokes are a little too low brow for my taste, but it gets better as it goes along - by the end of the season I think the balance is just about perfect. Hope Season 2 continues this trend!
The pilot is terrible, but after that the series really takes off. Enjoy! It's on Hulu too.
The Orville is a pretty good show and is fun to watch. It is also for people that got depressed and angry if they watched Discovery
Lol more like part of treatment, i mean for people depressed by Discovery.
I love also Discovery. It's a totally diffrent show. It's like comparing apples and pears.
Isn't the hate for discovery not a tiny bit overblown? I mean I wouldn't call it good, but it has good elements in it and it somehow is strangely entertaining not necessarily like a slow motion car crash but not unlike it either.
@@freshFerdinand nope its a steaming pile of a show.
@@freshFerdinand I feel like the only episodes that people liked were in the Mirror Universe. Besides that, discovery has many problems that contribute to all the hate. The Klingons, advanced technology that shouldn't be in their century, terraforming in seconds, the characters, and total lack to the Star Trek timeline. If CBS said this show took place in another universe or timeline, like the Kelvin one, then I think the hate wouldn't be as bad as it is.
The Orville is the Star Trek equivalent of the Miranda class. Small, sturdy, all-purpose mid-range ship. Tbh, it is unfair to compare it to the Federation flagship.
"Miranda."
"Sturdy."
Pick one. Seriously, it's more like the Steamrunner, Saber, or any of the kitbash Federation ships. It survives battles with the Kryll by Kurn-level tactical prowress.
Also, I like to think the Kryll are Reman experimentation with Jem'Hadar DNA to make even stronger shock troopers, but resulted in weakness to UV radiation.
@@dragonknightleader1 The Miranda fails so often because it was never meant to fight the Dominion or the Borg. People forget that in Wrath of Khan its stated purpose was to service the Regula 1 station. It isn't a fighter, its meant to be a workhorse that still ticks after a million light years on the clock. The only reason it did so well against the Enterprise was Kirk's mid-life crisis combined with Khan's sucker punch.
@@clearspira I remember reading something tech-ish back 'round the time TWOK came out to the effect that the Reliant outgunned Enterprise thanks to those fore-and aft-facing megaphaser emplacements on the rollbar -- not to mention the fore and aft torpedo tubes. (All apparently detatchable, or at least a Y/N factory option). With the dual hangar bays added in, definitely a ship with a much different intended role than the Connie.
@@clearspira agreed. It's sturdy in the way old American cars are sturdy - simple, proven technology that is very reliable and when it does break can be fixed with a paperclip and gum, not the way that tanks are sturdy with heavy armour and such.

I like the show allot, first season felt like they were trying to find their footing. Second season seems to be toning down the random silly humor while still keeping it light hearted and I think by the end of this season we will see the show really finding its place. Not unlike most Trek shows
Who's going to grow the beard to make it truly great tho? Or does Malloy's beard already do the job?
Seth probably pitched the show as a comedy/parody (of star trek)...only to realize later they (Fox) have a pretty good shot at upstaging STD if they played their cards right.
a very, very accurate prediction
I found an Allot!
The Orville is a series in the tradition of TNG with a dose of self-mockery and a Star Trek untypical captain who is nobody's first choice. That's something different and an absolutely a cool base.
The ship does not look like Star Trek but it feels like ST. Basically, it fits very well in the series of heroic Star Trek ships. The whole concept is well thought out, with attention to detail.
It actually does look like Star Trek on the inside. If you showed just the sets without any crew to give it away with the uniforms, it could easily be a Starfleet ship from the TNG/DS9/Voyager era.
@@kenhagler7166 Yes, and I think that is absolutely intended.
@@kenhagler7166The only thing missing is that ambient engine noise.
ua-cam.com/video/DydIK14AvXI/v-deo.html
@Mike DeMarco Yes, you're right. He was best in class. But even if Star Trek captains also had their career problems, I think he's more human and not just the shining or silent hero.
The ship has a LOT of star trek styling elements on the outside if you look closely.
It's just they hid them in an otherwise quite distinct design. (very squid-like design actually - the Union seems to have ships styled off sea creatures)
The engines have a blue glow, look at the underside you see 'nacelles' hidden in the design (what purpose they serve is beyond me, but they're there, and they make the ship look a lot more 'star trek' then it would otherwise)
The overall shape is still suggestive of a saucer+ engineering hull combo, especially seen from the front.
the shuttlebay is pretty much where you'd expect it for a starfleet ship...
The interior of course is more clearly similar to federation design, albeit not actually identical either...
I don’t remember seeing rocks flying out of the walls when she takes a hit.
The rocks are actually well done isolinear chips. Dip not included.

The writers of this show really are star trek fans. The fact that it has a QUANTUM engine says it all

I would like more Orville stuff but you forgot to mention they also have a school like the Enterprise xD
They even show it in season 2 episode 1
do they? Cause yea, I totally missed that
@@LoreReloaded yes sir they do have school because the big story in the episode was the XO is dating one of the teachers.
But the teacher is not Mrs. O'Brian ;)
yeah, he starts to have an affair with Ed Mercer's ex-wife, that was a funny bit of plot, lol.
I love the Orville! And you're right, the show does kind of feel like a hybrid TOS/TNG. I definitely prefer their more pragmatic approach to the "Prime Directive"
I would agree..
@@LoreReloaded In the latest episode they actually go out of their way to save a few dozen survivors from a doomed planet with a pre-warp (but today-modernish) technology. Janeway and Picard would've just kept on flying. The only Trek captain to maybe give them a chance would be Kirk, or MAYBE Archer (since PD didn't exist yet but Dear Doctor makes me say only maybe).
@@cattraknoff Right - sometimes taking too legalistic a view keeps you from doing the right thing. Not only would Janeway and Picard have just kept flying, they would have moralized that following the Prime Directive to the letter was more important than saving lives because of umm, whatever the excuse was this week. Couldn't they just say, "We follow the Prime Directive because the Vulcans insist on it?" Wouldn't that be more honest?
@@powerofk The Prime Directive was set in place because interference by warp-capable civilizations on pre-warp civilizations often led to absolute chaos for the pre-warp civilization. To avoid this, it was better to just avoid these civilizations.
@@1993Warbirds yes but they should still try to save the pre warp civilizations lmao

Do more episodes. I love the Orville. It has a more real world feel to it character wise and the tech looks good.
Interesting thing is that the Union do not use or have transporter. But I think this will give better plots. Star Trek introduced the transporter because it was not possible to show so many shuttle flights and landing scence.
@@STNuevo The transporter is a retarded concept anyway. Annihilate someone on one side and recreate them on the other. What steps out is just a copy, the original person is dead. I like Trek but it trends more toward science-fantasy than science-fiction than I would prefer sometimes. I like the Orville being a little more realistic while maintaining the campyness and positivity of Trek.
@@cattraknoff just fyi it does not have to be done that way. They could use quantum tunneling to the same effect. They just chose destruction/reconstruction because it made sense at the time.
@@STNuevo Which, given their use of replicator technology for everything from food and drink to "Amazon"-style shopping for gifts and convenience items, makes you wonder why (in-universe) they wouldn't have gone with the transporter option, unless what comes out the other end ain't quite right nor natural.

More ORVILLE please...just subbed
10 light years an hour? Well damn, that means they could make that 70,000 light year trip from voyager in like 42 week
Plot convenience made Voyager the Slowest ship in Starfleet. Kirks Enterprise was even faster than the Orville, in not just 1 or 2 episodes but the entire TOS, TAS and the TOS Movies. The Enterprise could do 990.7 Light Years in 11.5 hours. Due to the Plot of needing Voyager stuck on the other side of the Galaxy, they slowed her right down to 1000 Light Years per Year.
Yup, roughly: 87000 c
Love the Orville. Keep doing more, it's nice to see lore that I haven't seen a thousand times!!!

The Orville will explore the great unknown ... or at least try while having a laugh.
I’ve heard so many good things about this series, I need to watch it, it’s sounds right up my alley :))
I've always liked the Orville because even though it's on a ship that goes faster than light, and gets into combat with aliens, the people still feel down to Earth like people I would meet and they talk the way the people I meet would talk. The Orville feels real because it basically is about the people I meet every day, but with the hum of a quantum drive, and the occasional blasts of laser weaponry to set the scene.
Yes, please keep doing this series! It's so good to see reviews of a show that is more in line with the spirit of Star Trek than what modern Trek actually is!

The only aspect of the Orville series is that the seasons are too short. I can't get enough! I love that there are social issues at the heart of the plot lines. The humor is irreverent, but not over the top. Production values are up to the standards of StarTrek's more recent series. Thanks for the details about the ship.
Thank you. It is the cure when exposed to STD.

What I like about The Orville is everything is so nice lit. This in contrast to Star Trek Discovery which is dark and grim. The overal vibe of the show is also much better. The Orville can be compared with Star Trek The Next Generation nearly 1 on 1. That show, also involved a nice looking ship, well lit, clean and good stories. Not that I did not like Star Trek DS9, Voyager and Enterprise, but Star Trek Discovery is complete so un-Star Trek. The Orville is just TNG 2018/2019. What is there more to say? It takes itself a bit less serious than TNG, but that was only in the first half of the first season. They noticed that the humor, al though very amusing, was a little over the top and they did not wanted to be seen as a TNG Spoof. So they became some what more serious and they stand on their own now. I am very happy with this show, because we didn't have a descent Star Trek since Enterprise. Yes, I consider Star Trek Enterprise also as a good show. It was pure Trek, but then the beginning. Very sad they cancelled that. After that we had to wait 13 years! for a new show to appear. Or better said: 2 shows. Discovery and The Orville. And both tv-shows are completely opposite of each other. Sure I watch them both, I always liked Star Trek, and even if Discovery is dark I will still watch it. Since every new show has it's startup hick-ups and the writers have to learn from the responses from the audience. But The Orville? They just did what the audience wanted the most, a TNG like style sci-fy tv-show. Definitely worth watching.
YES! The brightly lit sets are key to the overall feel to the show. It's a great show, with the perfect balance of serious drama with just the right amount of comic nuance. That balance is even better so far in season two. It is Star Trek:TNG "Lite", in a good way.
Keep doing Orville stuff sir. Its a good show and people are into it. I am and found you specifically because of it.
One of my favorite shows. Please continue to do more videos of this show
I wait every single day sitting as I wait for the next orville episode this counts right?

It can replicate Cannabis Edibles.
Yes. Continue making more shows on this subject. This was a good one, as usual.
This is a great show and I really enjoyed your video. This is a nice change of pace from the normal videos you produce. Please keep going with these.
More Orville if you will. But not too often I'd expect as this isn't really a very Lore heavy show.
Discovery is dead to me. Orville is the true successor to the trek legacy.
Space....The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Orville. Its continuing mission: To continue the original 'Star Trek' adventures inspired by Gene Roddenberry's visions. To seek first contact with new civilizations while having lots of fun. To boldly go where no Trek has gone before!!

The orvil is TNG with some tung and cheek topped of with the best balance of serious. It witty, and meaningful with lots and lots of character development, even for some characters that don't show up to often.
I’m of the opinion that the show, i.e., The Orville, is the result of The Force...sorry, the Ghost of Gene Roddenberry pushing back at the recent spate of Paramount/CBS’s atrocious attempts at keeping Gene’s vision alive and well. Star Trek Discovery, aka the very appropriate acronymed STD, is an example of the missteps that Gene’s ghost is attempting to right. Having said all that, by all means please keep making Orville related content.
yeah, the Orville is really good. What kept me from watching it sooner was my financial situation, however, it was well worth the 19 or so USD to see it on YT. The first few shows of season 2 was only a couple of dollars. I sort of wish YT would let me prepay for the rest of the month, oh well. Looks like I'll have a new tradition for the 3rd of each month, (paying for and watching the shows I missed near the end of the month), lol.

I actually am looking forward to more Orville and want to pay to see it, unlike another show that I don't want to watch and only look at reviews for the morbid and sad curiosity of "What did they screw up this time".
In any case, great vid Lore and crew. B)
Prime video let's u pre pay the whole season. In one shot. That's what I did.
hmmm. Amazon a few years back discontinued their PC video player thing, so vids could only be watched on phones or cable/sat box things. I haven't looked at their videos since. Cellphones do not work where I live, so it's a waste of limited funds to have one. I haven't had a TV in over ten years and don't want one, if I can't watch it on my computer, I have no need to be spoon fed what someone else wants me to watch when they want me to watch it, lol. It would be cool if Amazon has a way to watch stuff on a PC, I just haven't bothered looking before now.
Nope. "Stream on your compatible TV, gaming console, Fire TV, or phones and tablets.", PC is NOT in that list. I guess if you live closer to civilization than me, that is very cool, and the price looks ok (about 25USD for session 2).
It's on Hulu, you could pay for a month and watch a season all at once. Last year the new episodes where only on for a few weeks, then removed as new ones aired, and eventually after the first season was over they put the whole season on. This year it's up to episode 5 and episode one is still listed, so they may just keep them all.
Just an idea, as a month of Hulu is cheaper than paying UA-cam to watch an entire season.
I would agree with that, except the closing. cheaper than Paying outright for it to only be able to see it for the duration of a month. I guess it works if all you wanted was to rent it for a single viewing, that's cool. the YT fee is to the best of my knowledge a "buy it" not rent (unless you chose the 48-hour rent that I didn't see an option for on the Orville vids).
I'll look at Hulu, and see how much Spy-Ad-wear they want users to install on a PC just to be able to watch shows. It is an interesting option for introducing someone to the Orville.
The Expanse is another that I want to look into, I just haven't had time to look.
About time you continued this ;)
The thing that makes this show so good it has almost everyday people that you would almost sure as hell never want on a spaceship but the crew compliments each others skill set and work together and it makes it seem like a family dysfunctional at times but funny and effective nonetheless

Please do more Orville. It's honestly a very underrated show.
STD is a SJW destruction of the Star Trek we all loved. The Oreville, while not being in the ST universe, is a show for ST fans.
Star Trek: Discovering feminism made exclusively for retarded purple hair SJWs.
You can hate on STD all you want, but Star Trek has always been SJW from the very beginning. That's like 50% of the point of the franchise. The Vulcan philosophy is Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
@@gblatt8472"r Trek has always been SJW "
NOPE
Quote: Star Trek, particularly The Original Series, embodies the radical idea that both liberalism and conservatism are necessary to arrive at the best possible answer.
PERIOD.
@@gblatt8472 it has always been liberal yes, but never sjw.
STD's entire setting is designed to push left wing political propaganda. The show was not created for nor by trek fans, it was created to sell the CBS app. The directors do not care about trek and are just using the name sake.
The Kelvin crap and Discovery are not trek, they are just crap...
@@bubba9384 What is the difference, for you between liberal and SJW? How is that left lean different from the left lean in TOS? A show that made it a point to cast women and minorities in prominent, unconventional roles at a time when that was much more radical than it is now. A show that pushed to have the first interracial kiss on TV amid studio and public protest. That seems *much* more SJW than anything Discovery could ever do.
I'm still making my way though season 1 of STD, I'd like to know what specifically SJW thing you don't like? Are there storylines that deal with diversity you don't like? Or is it something else?
What is this show, I've never heard of it before? It sounds and looks like some sort of Star Trek knock-off, though....
Don't do that...
The hate will be intense
Seth Macfarlane is a big fan of Star Trek so he wrote the show up as a Star Trek Inspiration. It's a mix of comedy and drama so if you are a big fan of Star Trek then you can check it out.
@@grimmfandango832 It is some kind of parody then?
@@samuellawrencesbookclub8250 I've heard it's actually more Star Trek than the cancer known as Discovery.
I love your videos Lore. The Orville has really caught my attention as a show and I'd love to see more videos on it, granted it only has a relatively small amount of episodes so far but they have been fun.
God I love Orville. It's like... We knew what type of show it was gonna be and it's honest to that. Although I do like how they try to stay serious for the most part. Glad to see you doing a video on it too, really enjoy your insight.
I love The Orville. I get excited every week to watch a new episode. That’s very rare for me, since most shows I just wait until they’re on a streaming service and binge them. I am watching The Orville on Hulu, but each episode is up the day after it aired on TV. I grew up when Star Trek was off the air (only reruns of TNG, ENT and TOS). So watching those shows, I never got the feeling of “What’s going to happen next? I can’t wait for the next episode!” With The Orville, I’m getting that feeling. When part one of “Identity” ended on a cliffhanger, I knew I felt the same way the people that watched “Best of Both Worlds” felt. It was an amazing experience.
One of my favourite shows. Feels like modern day Star Trek with a slight comedic twist.
Keep doing the series I like what you are doing!
I've started to really love the Orville. Was happy to see you do this video. :)
Yes please make more videos about the Orville. I love this show and it feels more Star Trek than discovery.
