How to Play Ghost Rider in Dungeons & Dragons

- Today we're building Ghost Rider in D&D 5e! Having mounts shouldn't be limited to the cavaliers of the world, cast spells and throw fire from the top of a flaming horse. Or camel. Or elk. You've got options. This is a great build for someone who wants to go fast and mess up the enemies position. Be sure to support today's sponsor, Allison Howle, links below!

I would have gone for oath of vengeance paladin because well it makes thematic sense and I don't think a GM would mind swapping radiant damage to fire damage for the sake of role playing and your playing a monster race to begin with so yeah
Honestly you could easily flavour the attacks as flames but they're 'radiant flames' ie radiant damage. That way you dont even need to change a mechanic.
Fair, but Oathbreaker works too. You are after all breaking your Oath to your "Evil god" to be a hero.
@@LupineShadowOmega Now THAT makes sense.
Honestly if you're going for ghost rider's hellfire, radiant damage works perfectly since it burns the soul more so than flesh
Was surprised it wasn't vengeance. Seems more on point, but this is still a great build
" dead person ressurrected by the devil and then set on fire.." thats actually pretty easy in D&D"
WoW, what a freakish little game, D&D is awesome!!!!
Haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but the Modern Magic UA has the spell Find Vehicle, which works just like Find Steed but could actually get you that motorcycle.
Oh. My. Glob. Researching that now. So many new options
Tulok the Barbrarian You could also use it at higher levels with your warlock slots to summon, say, a piece of construction equipment
Alternatively, Scourge/Fallen Aasimar(Spirit of Vengeance was once Angel of Justice i.e. Celestial that was captured, driven mad by Mephisto and fused with a human) & Oath of Vengeance Paladin/Fiend Pact Warlock. Bonus points if your GM is cool enough to re-flavor your radiant/necrotic energy as fire.
cedric13sai well radiant is more fitting because hellfire burns your soul, whereas mundane fire just burns your flesh.
@cedric13sai I play a Chaotic Neutral Ghost Rider with this exact build in AL. At lvl 20 with his current gear, I think his max damage output would be 274 pts. Goes to 298 on Undead, 198 for Fiend.
Warlock (fiend) for start makes more sense with the "sold soul to devil" and then later paladin to show a rejection of said devil!
Variant human would let you get the Mounted Combatant feat earlier.
This
Yeah, doing the reverse makes more sense.
Variant human would help with the feat but Revenant makes more sense and is cooler when it comes to the build and theme.
@@mikehorne4053 well, if you're really going for the skull bit, then yeah. But Johnny Blaze didn't die to become Ghost Rider. But not everyone want 100% rip-off PCs I guess.
@@dragonmaster613 Not really the skull bit (revenants look more or less like people than undead) I mean as far as his ability to not die, and healing factor goes.
"I'm never going to build a warlock without Eldritch Blast."
And honestly, anyone who says you should is wrong.
Warlocks don't get Eldritch blast, Eldritch blast gets warlocks.
"But muh character concept"
You sold your soul for a reason. May as well add the best cantrip in the game onto that list bud.
᛬ᚹᛁᛚᚺᛖᛚᛗ᛫ᛋᛖ᛫ᛚᛟᚱᚾᛁᛝᛣᚾᛁᛉᛏ᛬ but magic initiate and spell sniper.
Jake The Hawk honestly a Warlock with out Eldritch Blast is like a vampire without its fangs
᛬ᚹᛁᛚᚺᛖᛚᛗ᛫ᛋᛖ᛫ᛚᛟᚱᚾᛁᛝᛣᚾᛁᛉᛏ᛬ you can have a barbarian with Eldritch Blast.
UA-cam wouldnt let me link in the description for some reason, check out Allison Howle's website here!

“Your whole body is on FIRE! Why would anyone think hitting you was a good idea!”
Fiend pact warlock, followed by Vengeance Paladin makes more sense thematically if you're trying to follow the Ghost Rider motif
me after watching this video: "ok I think I know what I want my first D&D character to be."
Dm: what’s your back story
Me: AFTER I DIED, I HEARD A VOICE THAT ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO MAKE THEM PAY-
*The Ghost Rider*
A revenant human warlock-paladin infamous for being able to destroy someone by staring at them and having them experience the sins they've committed.
"lay on hands, not really up your alley"
he says while showing a clip of the ghost rider healing someone by touching them with the flaming hand
I love your stuff by the way
I gave my ghost rider a big ole scythe and a warhorse.
Scythe can just be a reflavored Glaive, which is what I think works nicely.
Also big black burnt leather trench coat is a must take.
Is there gonna be a power ranger build?
Nothing in the near future, but I can add it to the list!
*YES*
Tulok the Barbrarian I would love to see this
x5 Tinker Gnome's make a semi-large mech to all ride inside xD
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 “so that was a fucking lie”
(I’m joking, and don’t care cause I love your stuff and keep coming back to this video cause Indo this so bad)
And in Wildemount, we now have the Hollowed One template, meaning, a playable undead, who is hard to kill, and can scare folks to the point they fail saving throws.
Honestly, it never occurred to me to make Ghost Rider in D&D. Rather, I looked at the game Geist: the Sin-Eaters and thought “I could probably make a version of Ghost Rider in this game.
I did exactly that for an NPC when I ran it. Worked out well.
I’m new to dnd so the fact that I can make my favorite characters and even add my own flair to some of them is so amazingly awesome
This video recommendation got me into watching Tulok a year ago. Now, a year later, UA-cam recommends it to me yet again. A truly beautiful thing, the algorithm
Awesome build! I used a flail instead of a whip, less reach sucks but the damage really helps when the slots are running low
You know, thinking about this, the lower Wisdom is less of an issue than with most. Revenants are undead and thus has fewer issues there since Charm/Hold Person and many others aren't effecting them.
I’ve watched about a dozen of these. I think this is your strongest most playable build that I’ve seen. Nice work!
You’re getting key characteristics of the goal character represented. But, and this is just as important, you haven’t made an unplayable character along the way. This character may not be a powerhouse, and having so few spells from warlock is going to mean you’ll almost never get a chance to use slots to smite, which limits a lot of the benefit of that 5 level dip into pally, but I still think they’ll be able to contribute to the game meaningfully both in and outside of combat.
I do feel like 20 levels of warlock or 20 levels of paladin may be stronger and impart enough of the feel of the goal persona. But, I see what you’re aiming at, and I dig it!
Pact Magic Divine Smite, every short rest is still awesome.
Dark One's Blessing plus Aur- oh yeah, oathbreaker
Another great video, congrats on getting a sponsor!
Thanks! Follow her on Twitter to make me look good. :)
See, while I'm looking through your builds, this one in particular has made me consider how to do the Japanese hero - well franchise but focusing on the original and traditional - Kamen Rider. It's a similar core concept with the Find Steed, and the Paladin levels make for a great finisher, especially as instead of Warlock, this would be a monk... but the issue there is you have to roll monk AND Paladin, which is a grand total of four stats above 13. As casting spells on your steed isn't as important as the Ghost Rider build (For the original), it'd probably just be a mix of Fighter and Monk, or a monk with a mount
It's a small note that's worth saying that the invocations Grasp of Hadar and Lance of Lethargy are *up to once per round.* You can't tug someone 40 feet towards you, or reduce their speed by 40 feet in one action. Also notably, the invocation Repelling Blast *is* per beam, so that can indeed apply per hit instead of once per turn. Just a small note.
I am shocked highway to hell wasn't used but pimped out ride is funny
That was on the list, but that shot from the first Ghost Rider where he does a goofy skull smile while hellifying his bike needed to be in the video.
With some minor modifications, you can use this build for Jonah Hex. I plan on using both builds. One can substitute whip with spiked chain: 2d4 piercing, disarming, finesse, and reach.
Question! I have the 5th edition character sheet app and I’m trying to figure out how to make the Revenant Human (I’m new to dnd). How do I make it?
just wondering if you could (if anyone can do this, it's you) make a build based off of The Mask
Cartoon trickster shapeshifter? Color me interested.
I thought he was green, not intrested
I'd probably try a revenant(the mask can't die per se) and for class probably sorcerer with wild magic cause the mask is kind of a wild card(he's a wacky ass green faced cartoon)
@@valcandestr0yer I think the issue is that The Mask is literally just that, a mask, and the human host can very much die once it's removed.
BJGvideos true. Maybe still be like a revenant but instead of coming back to life it's more find a new host. I'm trying to keep this non-homebrew but it's almost impossible to build a cartoon in a game with any sort of balance. Think the mask is a irl cartoon and is basically a primordial/God which beats the whole challenge thing. And especially since he's a cartoon he's got the classic 'golden bag of holding' like Deadpool except more of a cartoon jokster. So the mask is a God/primordial that can't actually do anything but be a punching bag take no damage and crack one liners
great job, you nailed that
YESSSSS I JUST MADE A HOMEBREW CLASS FOR THIS
If there was a Warlock subclass with Find Steed and Find Greater Steed I would lose my mind. That would be so great.
The Agents of Shield clips mixed in here reminded me how much I want to see a Quake build.
i love this, id consider conquest for the fear effect though
I was expecting eyebite as one of your mystic arcanums
Guys, check out this new Tulok build. It's the hottest thing on the market!
God the idea of using the penance stare on the BBEG is one of the coolest things I've ever thought of! God Ghost Rider is so fucking cool!
I wonder how this would look with the official revenant (Also thanks for showing the agents of shield clips, I liked that arc it was cool!)
The modern/urban UA has a Find Vehicle spell, which is find steed but with cars, boats, and motorcycles
5:22 "I'm never going to make a warlock without Eldritch Blast"
*Blake Belladonna would like to know your location*
One thing to mention is that your can be a ghost rider wearing heavy armor and wielding a spear and as long as your on your mount it makes thematic sense since ghost riders don't always use the same weapons and equipment they just tend to where what they where in marvel comics because its cool and they don't need to wear armor
Oh true! Take this in your own direction, just remember any two handed weapon will occupy your other hand making spells a little harder
Never is a strong word Tulok, this build was three years ago, I'm almost certain I've seen you make warlock builds without Eldritch Blast.
I did something for a fan crafted Scorpion build that I thought could be useful to this build as well where I used the Pact of the Tome rather than the Pact of the Blade. This allowed me to get the Thorn Whip as a Cantrip and use Charisma for it and my dm allowed a Home brewed Invocation called Infernal Weapon. Infernal weapon requires a level 9 fiendlock that allows the player to once per turn add 2d6 damage to their attack. That damage could be necrotic, fire, lightning, cold, acid or poison. This created a fiery chain for both our favorite hell boys.
Yes I've been wanting a ghost rider for a long time
It was a challenge, but it paid off, I'm very happy with this one!
Are you making the thing from another world next week
Oh i just thought some slasher movie villains like freddy, jason, leatherface, predator, alien (xenomorph), or the DC character uncle sam would be great
What is the what is dead will never die from
Game of Thrones! It's the Greyjoy family saying thingy
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 oh i never watched the show i wasn't allowed when it started and it never interested me after a while
I really need to play this combo :P Warlock-Paladin mounted combatant w whip, hell yeah!
Now this is something I can get behind
Pact of the Tome might be better for this character idea than Blade. It gives 3 cantrips from any spell list. The druid cantrips thorn whip and produce flame fit the theme perfectly and the cleric spell sacred flame is on theme and provides an easy source of radiant damage.
An alternative to extra attack from paladin is to tack green flame blade onto your whip attacks. Taking the war caster feat also lets you cast green flame blade as a reaction.
Tulok deserves more subs
Can't argue with you there
Yes! Ghost Rider is awesome
Hell yes he is. This was a lot of fun to put together
Tulok the Barbrarian could you add Ant-Man to your list? I have been trying to build him around the use of enlarge/reduce and Giant Soul sorcerery and would be interested to see how you would go about it sometime
This is a great build
You know what would make a good build as well and would be thematically consistent? "Spawn" from the McFarland comics.
ok so just found your channel, and wow, lol, So you have added some barbarian levels, for that unarmored defense and movement boost. and well rage. the rider is full of rage.
Don't know if I am remembering correctly but didnt they used to have a chain master or fiend class?
While I totally understand Pact of the Fiend, a Hexblade might also give some benefits if the player is able to make the whip their hex weapon
Should I get Sword Coast or Volo's next? I'm looking for more race options, but if Sword Coast has more class options, that'd be nice.
Volo's has more new races, (mainly monster ones) but sword's has more options for the phb ones.... So... Whichever of those two is more of a priority for you.
Personally, I did Warlock 14/Paladin 6 with a homebrewed Infernal Flail magic weapon when I built it, but this is great too.
however wouldnt u have low health with 14 Warlock levels? as I recall the Ghost Rider is fucking Immortal in most cases.
Sekira do you want to be tanks or have more fire. You can’t be everything in dnd (unless you play a mystic)
@@orionar2461 personally I think the build in the video would be the most fitting stat wise and ability wise for a Ghost Rider character. but yeah ur right about that, cant have everything. XD
How about ban from the seven deadly sins? He has a lot going for him and im curious to see if you can make him in dnd
Not a character I'm familiar with, but I'll look into it! I plan on continuing to do 2 characters a week for a Looooooong time so ill always take suggestions
Ban would be absolutely broken as a character that literally cannot be killed or die.
Tip: if your dm isn't okay with revenant, scourge aasimar should work
i just noticed that if you take oath-breaker paladin you already get the hellish rebuke spell
Fiend Warlock is as close as it gets to ghost rider. Use Pact of the Blade, and make your weapon a whip.
Wait, but should one go paladin for 5 levels, then multi warlock? Or mix it up?
Bard of creation gain bonuses to charisma and performance u can illusion all special affects and animate a adamantine chain like 100 feet long and use heat metal and illusion spells to interrogate the sins out of your enemies and just spam intimidate. With level 6 death cleric so u can control life and death just continually heal yourself and others and wear plate
Please do the NAZGUL from Lord of the rings. Also love your videos, keep up the good work😁
Hell yeah!! this is a great build, from 1 to 20 i think it's pretty well balanced for a great role experience. Though you have cons.. wich class doesn't? hahah (frigging warlock slots). Is there a way to improve those spells slots? like, with a feat or something?
Let me tell you about: the Bard Rider.
6 levels of Lore Bard instead of the Paladin levels gets you Magical Secrets, letting you learn 2 spells from any class.
Find Greater Steed is now an option for a Pegasus Rider. You'll also just have way more spell slots, albeit still lower level.
Would it be possible with Spawn to be in D&D?
Would you do the same for Spawn?
I just found your channel and have watched your scar venom JoJo and now ghost rider build
I joined when he did deadpool you will love his content and he is really responsive to his fans/audience
He has some great builds coming up he always does
If my DM doesn't wanna use UA, can I use a Reborn instead?
So basically the charisma is the dnd embodiment of a integer stack overflow? Nice
If you want to go TRUE ghost rider I would try to find a way to fit a few gunslinger levels in there if your dm will allow it.
Wow impressive. Would definitely play this build.
Protip: it actually works better with Bard levels instead of Paladin, you can get Find Greater Steed and more spell slots.
Lol but the immersion?
How do you make the "shield hero"?
Tulok! Please do a Skarlet (from Mortal Kombat) build!!
What is relentless nature considered is it a feat or what?
this is a great build, takes awhile to really get going and is limited by the nature of D&D but otherwise it's all things that you could discuss with your DM. i'd love to DM someone who was building a Rider, it gives lots of cool story opportunities and i feel could be a fun 1 on 1 campaign.
(Note/Reminder: if you ever play a special person like this with more than the one player make sure you are also throwing love to your other PCs, just cause one is playing a badass Ghost Rider doesnt mean you can let them always save the day, give everyone some time in the lime light.)
This looks insanely fun! I’ve had the idea for an Oathbreaker Paladin that I turn into a Paladin/Warlock and this definitely gives me some ideas. Also, while the Ghost Rider films are sadly not great, this video did remember how cool they were visually.
Spirit of Vegance especially. The fights in that movie are next level. Everything in between is terrible. The first movie I think coasts on Ghost Rider just looking cool in general, but SoV does some crazy cool stuff
I love these videos! Could you do Hauru from Howl's moving castle next?
I definitely need to do some more Ghibli, good call
"Hauru"?
I think the matically for the spirit of Vengeance oath of Vengeance would have been good also hexblade Warrior would also be good
oh man, i really think he'd be better fitted for a revengeance paladin
Just finished watching both films and looking to make an altered version of this. Looking to use likely a mix of warloc and bard for this one. Subclasses have been the tricky part but for the kind of fire power Im after, I think Efreeti Genie Patron warloc is going to be an odd best choice, giving access to the fire spells Im gonna need fairly early. Im also only using about 6 levels of warloc in favor of the bard class abilities. I really had to think on it but to get all the acrobatics, performance, and offensive capabilities, I'm looking to use 14 levels of college of Valor bard and use the magical secrets options at 10th and 14th level to dip into cleric, paladin, and potentially wizard or sorcerer. the builds also going to require utilizing some feats. but the end result will give access to find greater steed, some additional fire damage to all of our melee attacks, a very useful damage or defensive buff through the bardic inspiration dice, and will be able to pull off the insane stunts he performs in human form as much as his intimidation and combat expertise in ghost rider form.
Actually, there was an Unearthed Arcana released in 2015 called "Modern Magic". In it, there's a spell for Warlocks, Sorcerers, Wizards and Paladins called Find Vehicle. So, that ride can be accomplished for a more in-character Rider. However, if your DM doesn't allow that, Find Steed works just as well. Sorry to be that guy, but I just found out about it and thought I'd let you know for future reference.
in terms of warlock, why not Hexblade? From Xanathar's Guide to Everything? It allows you to use your charisma to attack with your whip, as well as bonus damage and increased crit range against your cursed target.
can you oathbreaker an evil god?
What the heck is a Revenant Human? I’m so confused on what race that is because I can’t find that anywhere. Is it homebrew?

Awh, thanks friend!
Would Conquest Paladin work too?
I’ve never seen a video sponsored by a commissioned artist before. Was the bump for Allison Howle a formal paid sponsorship, or a really generous promo? As a fellow artist, I love the concept either way.
There are alternates for Paladins. Borrowing from ADnD (very old school) you could have an Anti-Paladin. They are basically Paladins but get the reverse of holy ability. Lay on of hands does damage
Technically the way the paladin spells work is you know the spell list and can prepare Up to a level you can cast so you should be able to have find greater steed through warlock spell slots since you can use each spell slots for either set of spells
Something tells me that a nightmare might make a badass mount for this class
Omg wouldn't it? That was the original plan, but those are a non specific fiend, not a demon or devil, so theres no method of summoning them
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 how about some Scooby Snacks?
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 You could utilize Find Greater Steed and work with your GM to allow you to summon creatures via that spell at perhaps 1/3 or 1/4 of your total level. The stronger your Rider becomes, the more powerful beasts he can summon to serve as his mount. And honestly, I played a Tiefling Oath of Conquest Paladin who was able to ride on a Nightmare. It felt SO dope!
Do you have a list you share as to what you have planned out?
Nawh, no spoilers fam. ;)
I've always had a question with mystic arcanum could i use the slots with my paladin spells
Nope. Its specifically a 6th level spell from Warlock (or 7th or 8th) etc. No lower levels, no using it for other classes like the rest of your pact magic.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 eh it was worth a shot

Was with you except for the Paladin Oath. Go for Vengeance. Fits better than Oathbreaker
Fire genasi and fallen aasimar are a good race options for people who’d like to avoid UA
Good call!

Add Feats, lots of them... 😂
Why Oathbreaker over Oath of Vengeance?
"I will never make a Warlock without Eldritch Blast."
Oh, how naive you were Tulok. (still love your vids and builds though)
I will NEVER understand the choice to have Nicolas Cage play GhostRider
