Notable Trees of the African Bush E03: Sclerocarya birrea/Mupfura/Marula

If there’s one tree that could justifiably be called the “Rock Star” of the African Tree World, then the marula (Sclerocarya birrea) must surely be it. Its fruit are eaten fresh like plums or juiced and made into eye-wateringly good (and often potent) beverages. Its edible nuts go into high end baking, its bark and leaves have dozens of medicinal uses. And, most famously of all, its seed oil is highly prized in the cosmetics industry for its almost miraculous anti-ageing properties. This diversity of uses is reflected in many different African cultures amongst whom the tree is revered for its remarkable properties. In this episode, Gus (the African Planter) visits a marula producing community in Chivi, central Zimbabwe, to see them in action as they harvest the fruit and separate out the juice and nuts for their different uses.

I Live in south africa and have decided I will remove all my foreign plants and replace with African. It is also important to be edible or have some other purpose that improve the soil or support other plants somehow.
